Inspired by the methods of Voisin, the first two authors recently proved that one could read off the gonality of a curve C from the syzygies of its ideal in any one embedding of sufficiently large degree. This was deduced from from a vanishing theorem for the asymptotic syzygies associated to an arbitrary line bundle B on C. The present paper extends this vanishing theorem to a smooth projective variety X of arbitrary dimension. Specifically, given a line bundle B on X, we prove that if B is p-jet very ample (i.e. the sections of B separate jets of total weight p+1) then the weight one Koszul cohomology group K_{p,1}(X, B; L) vanishes for all sufficiently positive L. In the other direction, we show that if there is a reduced cycle of length p+1 that fails to impose independent conditions on sections of B, then the Koszul group in question is non-zero for very positive L.
The purpose of this paper is to prove Ein--Lazarsfeld's conjecture on asymptotic vanishing of syzygies of algebraic varieties. This result, together with Ein--Lazarsfeld's asymptotic nonvanishing theorem, describes the overall picture of asymptotic behaviors of the minimal free resolutions of the graded section rings of line bundles on a projective variety as the positivity of the line bundles grows. Previously, Raicu reduced the problem to the case of products of three projective spaces, and we resolve this case here.
We analyze the vanishing and non-vanishing behavior of the graded Betti numbers for Segre embeddings of products of projective spaces. We give lower bounds for when each of the rows of the Betti table becomes non-zero, and prove that our bounds are tight for Segre embeddings of products of P^1. This generalizes results of Rubei concerning the Green-Lazarsfeld property N_p for Segre embeddings. Our methods combine the Kempf-Weyman geometric technique for computing syzygies, the Ein-Erman-Lazarsfeld approach to proving non-vanishing of Betti numbers, and the theory of algebras with straightening…
The purpose of this paper is to establish an effective non-vanishing theorem for the syzygies of an adjoint-type line bundle on a smooth variety, as the positivity of the embedding increases. Our purpose here is to show that for an adjoint type divisor $B = K_X+ bA$ with $b \geq n+1$, one can obtain an effective statement for arbitrary $X$ which specializes to the statement for Veronese syzygies in the paper "Asymptotic Syzygies of Algebraic Varieties" by Ein and Lazarsfeld. We also give an answer to Problem 7.9 in that paper in this setting.
The present paper is related to a conjecture made by Green and Lazarsfeld concerning 1-linear syzygies of curves embedded by complete linear systems of sufficiently large degrees. Given a smooth, irreducible, complex, projective curve $X$, we prove that the least integer $q$ for which the property $(M_q)$ fails for a line bundle $L$ on $X$ does not depend on $L$ as soon as its degree becomes sufficiently large. Consequently, this number is an invariant of the curve, and the statement of Green-Lazarsfeld's conjecture is equivalent to saying that this invariant equals the gonality of the curve. …
In this article we prove some strong vanishing theorems on K3 surfaces. As an aplication of them, we obtain higher syzygy results for K3 surfaces and Fano varieties.
We study the asymptotic non-vanishing of syzygies for products of projective spaces. Generalizing the monomial methods of Ein, Erman, and Lazarsfeld \cite{einErmanLazarsfeld16} we give an explicit range in which the graded Betti numbers of $\mathbb{P}^{n_1}\times \mathbb{P}^{n_2}$ embedded by $\mathcal{O}_{\mathbb{P}^{n_1}\times\mathbb{P}^{n_2}}(d_1,d_2)$ are non-zero. These bounds provide the first example of how the asymptotic syzygies of a smooth projective variety whose embedding line bundle grows in a semi-ample fashion behave in nuanced and previously unseen ways.
We show that a small variant of the methods used by Voisin in her study of canonical curves leads to a surprisingly quick proof of the gonality conjecture of Green and the second author, asserting that one can read off the gonality of a curve C from its resolution in the embedding defined by any one line bundle of sufficiently large degree. More generally, we establish a necessary and sufficient condition for the asymptotic vanishing of the weight one syzygies of the module associated to an arbitrary line bundle on C.
We study the syzygies of a codimension two ideal I = <f_1,f_2,f_3> in k[x,y,z]. Our main result is that the module of syzygies vanishing (scheme-theoretically) at the zero locus Z = V(I) is generated by the Koszul syzygies iff Z is a local complete intersection. The proof uses a characterization of complete intersections due to Herzog. When I is saturated, we relate our theorem to results of Weyman and of Simis and Vasconcelos. We conclude with an example of how our theorem fails for four generated local complete intersections in k[x,y,z] and we discuss generalizations to higher dimensions.
We show that vanishing of asymptotic p-th syzygies implies p-very ampleness for line bundles on arbitrary projective schemes. For smooth surfaces we prove that the converse holds when p is small, by studying the Bridgeland-King-Reid-Haiman correspondence for tautological bundles on the Hilbert scheme of points. This extends previous results of Ein-Lazarsfeld, Ein-Lazarsfeld-Yang and gives a partial answer to some of their questions. As an application of our results, we show how to use syzygies to bound the irrationality of a variety.
The purpose of the paper is to give a sharp asymptotic description of the weights that appear in the syzygies of a toric variety. We prove that as the positivity of the embedding increases, in any strand of syzygies, torus weights after normalization stabilize to the same fixed shape that we explicitly specify.
The rational homology groups of the packing complexes are important in algebraic geometry since they control the syzygies of line bundles on projective embeddings of products of projective spaces (Segre--Veronese varieties). These complexes are a common generalization of the multidimensional chessboard complexes and of the matching complexes of complete uniform hypergraphs, whose study has been a topic of interest in combinatorial topology. We prove that the multivariate version of representation stability, a notion recently introduced and studied by Church and Farb, holds for the homology gro…
We consider the graded space $R$ of syzygies for the coordinate algebra $A$ of projective variety $X=G/P$ embedded into projective space as an orbit of the highest weight vector of an irreducible representation of semisimple complex Lie group $G$. We show that $R$ is isomorphic to the Lie algebra cohomology $H=H^\bdot(\Lt,\CC)$, where $\Lt$ is graded Lie subalgebra of the graded Lie s-algebra $L=L_1\oplus\Lt$ Koszul dual to $A$. We prove that the isomorphism identifies the natural associative algebra structures on $R$ and $H$ coming from their Koszul and Chevalley DGA resolutions respectively.…
We formulate, and in some cases prove, three statements concerning the purity or, more generally the naturality of the resolution of various rings one can attach to a generic curve of genus g and a torsion point of order l in its Jacobian. These statements can be viewed an analogues of Green's Conjecture and we verify them computationally for bounded genus. We then compute the cohomology class of the corresponding non-vanishing locus in the moduli space R_{g,l} of twisted level l curves of genus g and use this to derive results about the birational geometry of R_{g, l}. For instance, we prove …
The Green-Lazarsfeld secant conjecture predicts that the syzygies of a curve of sufficiently high degree are controlled by its special secants. We prove this conjecture for all curves of Clifford index at least two and not bielliptic and for all line bundles of a certain degree. Our proof is based on a classic result of Martens and Mumford on Brill-Noether varieties and on a simple vanishing criterion that comes from the interpretation of syzygies through symmetric products of curves.
We prove a duality theorem for simplicial complexes arising from a combinatorial construction we define, which applies to the squarefree monomial complexes for Veronese ideals of projective spaces and weighted projective spaces. Our theorem yields a formula for the multigraded Betti numbers of these Veronese ideals in terms of the reduced homology groups of these complexes which is dual to one given by Bruns and Herzog. We apply this formula in several ways, including by giving an algorithm for finding the highest syzygy of such a Veronese ideal.
In this Note we prove the vanishing of (twisted) Koszul cohomology groups $K_{p,1}$ of an abelian variety with values in powers of an ample line bundle. It complements the work of G. Pareschi on the property $(N_p)$.
This paper is mainly concerned with applying the theory of M-regularity developed in the previous math.AG/0110003 to the study of linear series given by multiples of ample line bundles on abelian varieties. We define a new invariant of a line bundle, called M-regularity index, which is seen to govern the higher order properties and (partly conjecturally) the defining equations of such embeddings. We prove a general result on the behavior of higher syzygies in embeddings given by multiples of ample bundles whose base locus has no fixed components, extending a conjecture of Lazarsfeld known to b…
We will prove a Kodaira-Nakano type of vanishing theorem for the logarithmic de Rham complex of unitary local system. We will then study the weight filtration on the logarithmic de Rham complex, and prove a stronger statement for the associated graded complex.
We study the vanishing cycles of a one-parameter smoothing of a complex analytic space and show that the weight filtration on its perverse cohomology sheaf of the highest degree is quite close to the monodromy filtration so that its graded pieces have a modified Lefschetz decomposition. We describe its primitive part using the weight filtration on the perverse cohomology sheaves of the constant sheaves. As a corollary we show in the local complete intersection case that 1 is not an eigenvalue of the monodromy on the reduced Milnor cohomology at any points if and only if the total space and the…
In the geometric situation of the simple Shimura varieties of Kottwitz studied in Harris and Taylor's book, we describe the monodromy filtration of the vanishing cycles complex and the spectral sequence associated to it. We prove in particular that this filtration coincides with the weight one up to shift. Thanks to the Berkovich-Fargues' theorem, we deduce the description of the local monodromy filtration of the Deligne-Carayol model. In application, we obtain the description of the local components of cohomological automorphic representations of certains unitary groups, a global Jacquet-Lang…
Let \A be an affine hyperplane arrangement in $\C^\ell$ with complement $U$. Let $f_1, \..., f_n$ be linear polynomials defining the hyperplanes of \A, and $A^\cdot$ the algebra of differential forms generated by the 1-forms $d \log f_1, \..., d \log f_n$. To each $l \in \C^n$ we associate the master function $Φ=Φ_l = \prod_{i=1}^n f_i^{l_i}$ on $U$ and the closed logarithmic 1-form $ω= d \log Φ$. We assume $ω$ is an element of a rational linear subspace $D$ of $A^1$ of dimension $q>1$ such that the multiplication map $\bigwedge^k(D) \to A^k$ is zero for $p<k\leq q$. With this assumption, we p…
We study in detail the so-called Chow-weight homology of Voevodsky motivic complexes and relate it to motivic homology. We generalize earlier results and prove that the vanishing of higher motivic homology groups of a motif $M$ implies similar vanishing for its Chow-weight homology along with effectivity properties of the higher terms of its weight complex $t(M)$ and of higher Deligne weight quotients of its cohomology. Applying this statement to motives with compact support we obtain a similar relation between the vanishing of Chow groups and the cohomology with compact support of varieties. …
For ample vector bundles $E$ over compact complex varieties $X$ and a Schur functor $S_I$ corresponding to an arbitrary partition $I$ of the integer $|I|$, one would like to know the optimal vanishing theorem for the cohomology groups $H^{p,q}(X, S_I(E))$, depending on the rank of $E$ and the dimension $n$ of $X$. Three years ago (Nov. 1995), in an unpublished paper one of us (W.N.) proved a vanishing theorem for the situation where the partition $I$ is a hook. Here we give a simpler proof of this theorem. We also treat the same problem under weaker positivity assumptions, in particular under …
We establish the analogue of the Friedlander-Mazur conjecture for Teh's reduced Lawson homology groups of real varieties, which says that the reduced Lawson homology of a real quasi-projective variety $X$ vanishes in homological degrees larger than the dimension of $X$ in all weights. As an application we obtain a vanishing of homotopy groups of the mod-2 topological groups of averaged cycles and a characterization in a range of indices of the motivic cohomology of a real variety as homotopy groups of the complex of averaged equidimensional cycles. We also establish an equivariant Poincare dua…
We consider a class of linear codes associated to projective algebraic varieties defined by the vanishing of minors of a fixed size of a generic matrix. It is seen that the resulting code has only a small number of distinct weights. The case of varieties defined by the vanishing of 2 x 2 minors is considered in some detail. Here we obtain the complete weight distribution. Moreover, several generalized Hamming weights are determined explicitly and it is shown that the first few of them coincide with the distinct nonzero weights. One of the tools used is to determine the maximum possible number …
