We show that a small variant of the methods used by Voisin in her study of canonical curves leads to a surprisingly quick proof of the gonality conjecture of Green and the second author, asserting that one can read off the gonality of a curve C from its resolution in the embedding defined by any one line bundle of sufficiently large degree. More generally, we establish a necessary and sufficient condition for the asymptotic vanishing of the weight one syzygies of the module associated to an arbitrary line bundle on C.
We prove two statements concerning the linear strand of the minimal free resolution of a curve of fixed gonality. Firstly, we show that a general curve C of genus g of non-maximal gonality k\leq (g+1)/2 satisfies Schreyer's Conjecture, that is, b_{g-k,1}(C,K_C)=g-k, and all its highest order linear syzygies are of Eagon-Northcott type. This is a statement going beyond Green's Conjecture and predicts that all highest order linear syzygies in the canonical embedding of C are determined by the syzygies of the (k-1)-dimensional scroll containing C. Secondly, we formulate an optimal effective versi…
We explore the concept of projections of syzygies and prove two new technical results; we firstly give a precise characterization of syzygy schemes in terms of their projections, secondly, we prove a converse to Aprodu's Projection Theorem. Applying these results, we prove that extremal syzygies of general curves of non-maximal gonality embedded by a linear system of sufficiently high degree arise from scrolls. Lastly, we prove Green's Conjecture for general covers of elliptic curves (of arbitrary degree) as well as proving a new result for curves of even genus and maximal gonality.
Ein and Lazarsfeld have shown that one can read off the gonality of an algebraic curve from its syzygies in the embedding defined by any one line bundle of sufficiently large degree. This note extends their approach and shows that the gonality can be detected from the syzygies of an embedding by any line bundle of degree at least 4g-3.
The present paper is related to a conjecture made by Green and Lazarsfeld concerning 1-linear syzygies of curves embedded by complete linear systems of sufficiently large degrees. Given a smooth, irreducible, complex, projective curve $X$, we prove that the least integer $q$ for which the property $(M_q)$ fails for a line bundle $L$ on $X$ does not depend on $L$ as soon as its degree becomes sufficiently large. Consequently, this number is an invariant of the curve, and the statement of Green-Lazarsfeld's conjecture is equivalent to saying that this invariant equals the gonality of the curve. …
This paper is a survey of recent work on the asymptotic behavior of the syzygies of a smooth complex projective variety as the positivity of the embedding line bundle grows. After a quick overview of results from the 1980s and 1990s concerning the linearity of the first few terms of a resolution, we discuss a non-vanishing theorem to the effect that from an asymptotic viewpoint, essentially all of the syzygy modules that could be non-zero are in fact non-zero. We explain the quick new proof of this result in the case of Veronese varieties due to Erman and authors, and we explore some results a…
We apply a degenerate version of a result due to Hirschowitz, Ramanan and Voisin to verify Green and Green-Lazarsfeld conjectures over explicit open sets inside each $d$-gonal stratum of curves $X$ with $d<[g_X/2]+2$. By the same method, we verify the Green-Lazarsfeld conjecture for any curve of odd genus and maximal gonality. The proof invokes Voisin's solution to the generic Green conjecture as a key argument.
Inspired by the methods of Voisin, the first two authors recently proved that one could read off the gonality of a curve C from the syzygies of its ideal in any one embedding of sufficiently large degree. This was deduced from from a vanishing theorem for the asymptotic syzygies associated to an arbitrary line bundle B on C. The present paper extends this vanishing theorem to a smooth projective variety X of arbitrary dimension. Specifically, given a line bundle B on X, we prove that if B is p-jet very ample (i.e. the sections of B separate jets of total weight p+1) then the weight one Koszul …
We discuss recent progress on syzygies of curves, including proofs of Green's and Gonality Conjectures as well as applications of Koszul cycles to the study of the birational geometry of various moduli spaces of curves. We prove a number of new results, including a complete solution to Green's Conjecture for arbitrary hexagonal curves. Finally, we propose several new conjectures on syzygies, including a Prym-Green conjecture for l-roots of trivial bundles as well as a strong Maximal Rank Conjecture for generic curves. To appear in the Proceedings of Clay Mathematical Institute.
These lectures discuss recent advances on syzygies on algebraic curves, especially concerning the Green, the Prym-Green and the Green-Lazarsfeld Secant Conjectures. The methods used are largely geometric and variational, with a special emphasis on examples and explicit calculations. The notes are based on series of lectures given in Daejeon (March 2013), Rome (November-December 2015) and Guanajuato (February 2016).
The purpose of this paper is to prove Ein--Lazarsfeld's conjecture on asymptotic vanishing of syzygies of algebraic varieties. This result, together with Ein--Lazarsfeld's asymptotic nonvanishing theorem, describes the overall picture of asymptotic behaviors of the minimal free resolutions of the graded section rings of line bundles on a projective variety as the positivity of the line bundles grows. Previously, Raicu reduced the problem to the case of products of three projective spaces, and we resolve this case here.
This paper studies the asymptotic behavior of the syzygies of a smooth projective variety X as the positivity of the embedding line bundle grows. We prove that as least as far as grading is concerned, the minimal resolution of the ideal of X has a surprisingly uniform asymptotic shape: roughly speaking, generators eventually appear in almost all degrees permitted by Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity. This suggests in particular that a widely-accepted intuition derived from the case of curves -- namely that syzygies become simpler as the degree of the embedding increases -- may have been misleadin…
We describe a systematic way of constructing effective divisors on the moduli space of stable curves of genus g having exceptionally small slope. We prove that any divisor on \bar{M}_g consisting of curves failing a certain Green-Lazarsfeld syzygy type condition, provides a counterexample to the Harris-Morrison Slope Conjecture. These divisors generalize our original isolated counterexample to the Slope Conjecture which was the divisor on M_{10} of curves lying on K3 surfaces. We also introduce a new stratification of M_g, somewhat similar to the classical stratification given by gonality, but…
For any smooth irreducible projective curve $X$, the gonality sequence $\{d_r \;| \; r \in \mathbb N \}$ is a strictly increasing sequence of positive integer invariants of $X$. In most known cases $d_{r+1}$ is not much bigger than $d_r$. In our terminology this means the numbers $d_r$ satisfy the slope inequality. It is the aim of this paper to study cases when this is not true. We give examples for this of extremal curves in $\PP^r$, for curves on a general K3-surface in $\PP^r$ and for complete intersections in $\PP^3$.
We show that the implicit equation of a surface in 3-dimensional projective space parametrized by bi-homogeneous polynomials of bi-degree (d,d), for a given positive integer d, can be represented and computed from the linear syzygies of its parametrization if the base points are isolated and form locally a complete intersection.
In recent years, multiplier ideals have found many applications in local and global algebraic geometry. Because of their importance, there has been some interest in the question of which ideals on a smooth complex variety can be realized as multiplier ideals. Other than integral closure no local obstructions have been known up to now, and in dimension two it was established by Favre-Jonsson and Lipman-Watanabe that any integrally closed ideal is locally a multiplier ideal. We prove the somewhat unexpected result that multiplier ideals in fact satisfy some rather strong algebraic properties inv…
We study the interplay between the classical theory of linear series on curves, and the recent theory of linear series on graphs. We prove that every d-gonal (weighted) graph of Hurwitz type is the dual graph of a d-gonal curve. Conversely the dual graph of a d-gonal curve is equivalent to a d-gonal graph. We define d-gonal graphs by what we call harmonic indexed morphisms. Generalizations to higher dimensional linear series, and applications to tropical curves and hyperelliptic graphs are given.
The gonality sequence $(γ_r)_{r\geq1}$ of a finite graph / metric graph / algebraic curve comprises the minimal degrees $γ_r$ of linear systems of rank $r$. For the complete graph $K_d$, we show that $γ_r = kd - h$ if $r<g=\frac{(d-1)(d-2)}{2}$, where $k$ and $h$ are the uniquely determined integers such that $r = \frac{k(k+3)}{2} - h$ with $1\leq k\leq d-3$ and $0 \leq h \leq k $. This shows that the graph $K_d$ has the gonality sequence of a smooth plane curve of degree $d$. The same result holds for the corresponding metric graphs.
Let X be a smooth genus g curve equipped with a simple morphism f: X -> C, where C is either the projective line or more generally any smooth curve whose gonality is computed by finitely many pencils. Here we apply a method developed by Aprodu to prove that if g is big enough then X satisfies both Green and Green-Lazarsfeld conjectures. We also partially address the case in which the gonality of C is computed by infinitely many pencils.
Parameterized algebraic curves and surfaces are widely used in geometric modeling and their manipulation is an important task in the processing of geometric models. In particular, the determination of the intersection loci between points, pieces of parameterized algebraic curves and pieces of algebraic surfaces is a key problem in this context. In this paper, we survey recent methods based on syzygies and blowup algebras for computing the image and the finite fibers of a curve or surface parameterization, more generally of a rational map. Conceptually, the main idea is to use elimination matri…
This work consists of two parts. In the first part we develop new techniques to compute Koszul cohomology groups for several classes of varieties. As applications we prove results on projective normality and syzygies for algebraic surfaces. From more general results we obtain in particular the following: a) Mukai's conjecture (and stronger variants of it) regarding projective normality and normal presentation for surfaces with Kodaira dimension 0, and uniform bounds for higher syzygies associated to adjoint linear series, b) effective bounds along the lines of Mukai's conjecture regarding proj…
For an algebraic set $X$ (union of varieties) embedded in projective space, we say that $X$ satisfies property $\textbf{N}_{d,p}$, $(d\ge 2)$ if the $i$-th syzygies of the homogeneous coordinate ring are generated by elements of degree $< d+i$ for $0\le i\le p$ (see \cite{EGHP2} for details). Much attention has been paid to linear syzygies of quadratic schemes $(d=2)$ and their geometric interpretations (cf. \cite{AK},\cite{EGHP1},\cite{HK},\cite{GL2},\cite{KP}). However, not very much is actually known about the case satisfying property $\textbf{N}_{3,p}$. In this paper, we give a sharp upper…
We give simple geometric proofs of Aprodu-Farkas-Papadima-Raicu-Weyman's theorem on syzygies of tangent developable surfaces of rational normal curves and Raicu-Sam's result on syzygies of K3 carpets. As a consequence, we obtain a quick proof of Green's conjecture for general curves of genus $g$ over an algebraically closed field $\mathbf{k}$ with $\operatorname{char}(\mathbf{k}) = 0$ or $\operatorname{char}(\mathbf{k}) \geq \lfloor (g-1)/2 \rfloor$. We also show the arithmetic normality of tangent developable surfaces of arbitrary smooth projective curves of large degree.
Given a real curve, we study special linear systems called "very special" for which the dimension does not satisfy a Clifford type inequality. We classify all these very special linear systems when the gonality of the curve is small.
The rational homology groups of the packing complexes are important in algebraic geometry since they control the syzygies of line bundles on projective embeddings of products of projective spaces (Segre--Veronese varieties). These complexes are a common generalization of the multidimensional chessboard complexes and of the matching complexes of complete uniform hypergraphs, whose study has been a topic of interest in combinatorial topology. We prove that the multivariate version of representation stability, a notion recently introduced and studied by Church and Farb, holds for the homology gro…
Let k be an algebraically closed field of characteristic p. Let X(p^e;N) be the curve parameterizing elliptic curves with full level N structure (where p does not divide N) and full level p^e Igusa structure. By modular curve, we mean a quotient of any X(p^e;N) by any subgroup of ((Z/p^e Z)^* x \SL_2(Z/NZ))/{+-1}. We prove that in any sequence of distinct modular curves over k, the k-gonality tends to infinity. This extends earlier work, in which the result was proved for particular sequences of modular curves, such as X_0(N) for p not dividing N. We give an application to the function field a…
We consider the generic Green conjecture on syzygies of a canonical curve, and particularly the following reformulation thereof: {\it For a smooth projective curve $C$ of genus $g$ in characteristic 0, the condition ${\rm Cliff} C>l$ is equivalent to the fact that $K_{g-l'-2,1}(C,K_C)=0, \forall l'\leq l$.} We propose a new approach, which allows up to prove this result for generic curves $C$ of genus $g(C)$ and gonality ${\rm gon(C)}$ in the range $$\frac{g(C)}{3}+1\leq {\rm gon(C)}\leq\frac{g(C)}{2}+1.$$
This is an introduction, aimed at a general mathematical audience, to recent work of Aprodu, Farkas, Papadima, Raicu and Weyman. These authors established a long-standing folk conjecture concerning the equations defining the tangent developable surface of a rational normal curve. This in turn led to a new proof of a fundamental theorem of Voisin on the syzygies of a general canonical curve. The present note, which is the write-up of a talk given by the second author at the Current Events seminar at the 2019 JMM, surveys this circle of ideas.
Let C be an algebraic geometric code of dimension k and length n constructed on a curve X over $F_q$. Let s(C) be the state complexity of C and set w(C):=min{k,n-k}, the Wolf upper bound on s(C). We introduce a numerical function R that depends on the gonality sequence of X and show that s(C)\geq w(C)-R(2g-2), where g is the genus of X. As a matter of fact, R(2g-2)\leq g-(γ_2-2) with γ_2 being the gonality over F_q of X, and thus in particular we have that s(C)\geq w(C)-g+γ_2-2.
The gonality sequence $(d_r)_{r\geq1}$ of a smooth algebraic curve comprises the minimal degrees $d_r$ of linear systems of rank $r$. We explain two approaches to compute the gonality sequence of smooth curves in $\mathbb{P}^1 \times \mathbb{P}^1$: a tropical and a classical approach. The tropical approach uses the recently developed Brill--Noether theory on tropical curves and Baker's specialization of linear systems from curves to metric graphs. The classical one extends the work of Hartshorne on plane curves to curves on $\mathbb{P}^1 \times \mathbb{P}^1$.
Let $k$ be an algebraically closed field. Consider a reductive group $G$ over $k$. Let $X$ be a projective variety over $k$ with a $G$-action and let $L$ be a very ample $G$-linearized line bundle on $X$. Suppose that $L$ descends to the GIT quotient of $X$ by $G$. If $L$ satisfies the property $N_p$ one can ask if its descent also has $N_p$ property. In this article, we show this is the case under certain conditions. We then apply our results to some cases of interest. As a consequence of our results, we show that if $G$ is a finite group and $L$ satisfies $N_p$ property and its descent satis…
Green's Conjecture predicts than one can read off special linear series on an algebraic curve, by looking at the syzygies of its canonical embedding. We extend Voisin's results on syzygies of K3 sections, to the case of K3 surfaces with arbitrary Picard lattice. This, coupled with results of Voisin and Hirschowitz-Ramanan, provides a complete solution to Green's Conjecture for smooth curves on arbitrary K3 surfaces.
We give explicit computational algorithms to construct minimal degree (always $\le 4$) ramified covers of $\Prj^1$ for algebraic curves of genus 5 and 6. This completes the work of Schicho and Sevilla (who dealt with the $g \le 4$ case) on constructing radical parametrisations of arbitrary genus $g$ curves. Zariski showed that this is impossible for the general curve of genus $\ge 7$. We also construct minimal degree birational plane models and show how the existence of degree 6 plane models for genus 6 curves is related to the gonality and geometric type of a certain auxiliary surface.
We use Young tableaux to compute the dimension of $V^r$, the Prym-Brill-Noether locus of a folded chain of loops of any gonality. This tropical result yields a new upper bound on the dimensions of algebraic Prym-Brill-Noether loci. Moreover, we prove that $V^r$ is pure-dimensional and connected in codimension $1$ when $\dim V^r \geq 1$. We then compute the first Betti number of this locus for even gonality when the dimension is exactly $1$, and compute the cardinality when the locus is finite and the edge lengths are generic.
Let $M(n,ξ)$ be the moduli space of stable vector bundles of rank $n\geq 3$ and fixed determinant $ξ$ over a smooth projective algebraic curve $X$ over $\mathbb{C}$ of genus $g\geq 4.$ We use the gonality of the curve and $r$-Hecke morphisms to describe a smooth open set and to compute the dimension of a component of the Hilbert scheme $Hilb_{M(n,ξ)}$, of the scheme of morphisms $Mor(\mathbb{G},M(n,ξ))$ and of the moduli space $ M_{X \times \mathbb{G}}$ of stable bundles over $X\times \mathbb{G},$ where $\mathbb{G}$ is the Grassmannian $\mathbb{G}(n-r,\mathbb{C}^n)$. In particular, we prove th…
We present a method to control gonality of nonarchimedean curves based on graph theory. Let k denote a complete nonarchimedean valued field. We first prove a lower bound for the gonality of a curve over the algebraic closure of k in terms of the minimal degree of a class of graph maps, namely: one should minimize over all so-called finite harmonic graph morphisms to trees, that originate from any refinement of the dual graph of the stable model of the curve. Next comes our main result: we prove a lower bound for the degree of such a graph morphism in terms of the first eigenvalue of the Laplac…
We prove a strong vanishing result for finite length Koszul modules, and use it to derive Green's conjecture for every g-cuspidal rational curve over an algebraically closed field k with char(k) = 0 or char(k) >= (g+2)/2. As a consequence, we deduce that the general canonical curve of genus g satisfies Green's conjecture in this range. Our results are new in positive characteristic, whereas in characteristic zero they provide a different proof for theorems first obtained in two landmark papers by Voisin. Our strategy involves establishing two key results of independent interest: (1) we describ…
In projective algebraic geometry, there are classical and fundamental results that describe the structure of geometry and syzygies, and many of them characterize varieties of minimal degree and del Pezzo varieties. In this paper, we consider analogous objects in the category of higher secant varieties. Our main theorems say that there is a matryoshka structure among those basic objects including a generalized $K_{p,1}$ theorem, syzygetic and geometric characterizations of higher secant varieties of minimal degree and del Pezzo higher secant varieties, defined in this paper. For our purpose, we…
We investigate the smoothing problem of limit linear series of rank one on an enrichment of the notions of nodal curves and metrized complexes called saturated metrized complexes. We give a finitely verifiable full criterion for smoothability of a limit linear series of rank one on saturared metrized complexes, characterize the space of all such smoothings, and extend the criterion to metrized complexes. As applications, we prove that all limit linear series of rank one are smoothable on saturated metrized complexes corresponding to curves of compact-type, and prove an analogue for saturated m…
Let C be an algebraic curve defined over a number field K, of positive genus and without K-rational points. We conjecture that there exists some extension field L over which C violates the Hasse principle, i.e., has points everywhere locally but not globally. We show that our conjecture holds for all but finitely many Shimura curves of the form X^D_0(N)_{/Q} or X^D_1(N)_{/Q}, where D > 1 and N are coprime squarefree positive integers. The proof uses a variation on a theorem of Frey, a gonality bound of Abramovich, and an analysis of local points of small degree.
The geometric torsion conjecture asserts that the torsion part of the Mordell--Weil group of a family of abelian varieties over a complex quasiprojective curve is uniformly bounded in terms of the genus of the curve. We prove the conjecture for abelian varieties with real multiplication, uniformly in the field of multiplication. Fixing the field, we furthermore show that the torsion is bounded in terms of the $\mathit{gonality}$ of the base curve, which is the closer analog of the arithmetic conjecture. The proof is a hybrid technique employing both the hyperbolic and algebraic geometry of the…
Of the two techniques introduced by Bloch, Green-Griffiths and developed by Siu, Demailly to establish Kobayashi hyperbolicity of generic high degree complex algebraic hypersurfaces X in P^(n+1), the second one, initiated by Clemens, Ein, Voisin and developed by Siu, Paun, Rousseau consists in constructing meromorphic frames on the space of the so-called vertical k-jets J_vert^k (X_univ) of the universal hypersurface X_univ parametrizing all X in P^(n+1) of degree d. In 2004, Siu announced that there exists a constant c_n such that the twisting of the tangent bundle to J_vert^n (X_univ) by O (…
