We consider a heterogeneous elastic structure which is stratified in some direction. We derive the limit problem under the assumption that the Lamé coefficients and their inverses weakly* converge to Radon measures. Our method applies also to linear second-order elliptic systems of partial differential equations and in particular, for the case $d=1$, this addresses the previously open problem of determining the asymptotic behaviour in this context for the general anisotropic heat equation.
In this paper, we concerned with the propagation of sound waves through stratified media. Transport equation of nonlinear geometric optics in media with mixed nonlinearity, in the case of spatially varying density and entropy fields, is derived; this equation contains a cubic nonlinear term in addition to the quadratic nonlinearity. We consider an atmosphere where thermodynamic quantities depend on the height only. Effects of real gas parameters, density, and entropy attenuation parameters on the breakdown of the solution are investigated numerically.
In this paper, we consider a confined physical scenario to prove global existence of smooth solutions with bounded density and finite energy for the inviscid incompressible porous media (IPM) equation. The result is proved using the stability of stratified solutions, combined with an additional structure of our initial perturbation, which allows us to get rid of the boundary terms in the energy estimates.
We construct examples of solutions to the incompressible porous media (IPM) equation that must exhibit infinite in time growth of derivatives provided they remain smooth. As an application, this allows us to obtain nonlinear instability for a class of stratified steady states of IPM.
Analytic representation formulas and power series are developed to describe the band structure inside periodic elastic crystals made from high contrast inclusions. We use source free modes associated with structural spectra to represent the solution operator of the Lamé system inside phononic crystals. Convergent power series for the Bloch wave spectrum are obtained using the representation formulas. An explicit bound on the convergence radius is given through the structural spectra of the inclusion array and the Dirichlet spectra of the inclusions. Sufficient conditions for the separation of …
Consider the transmission eigenvalue problem for $u \in H^1(Ω)$ and $v\in H^1(Ω)$ associated with $(Ω; σ, \mathbf{n}^2)$, where $Ω$ is a ball in $\mathbb{R}^N$, $N=2,3$. If $σ$ and $\mathbf{n}$ are both radially symmetric, namely they are functions of the radial parameter $r$ only, we show that there exists a sequence of transmission eigenfunctions $\{u_m, v_m\}_{m\in\mathbb{N}}$ associated with $k_m\rightarrow+\infty$ as $m\rightarrow+\infty$ such that the $L^2$-energies of $v_m$'s are concentrated around $\partialΩ$. If $σ$ and $\mathbf{n}$ are both constant, we show the existence of transmi…
We study the travel time tomography problem for transversely isotropic media using the artificial boundary method used in works in X-ray tomography and boundary rigidity problems. The analysis involved requires a modification of the scattering pseudodifferential calculus in order to provide parametrices for operators which are degenerately elliptic; such a calculus is constructed in this paper and used to solve the tomography problem of interest.
