In this paper we examine embeddings of alternating groups and symmetric groups into almost simple groups of exceptional type. In particular, we prove that unless the alternating or symmetric group has degree 6 or 7, there is no maximal subgroup of any almost simple group with socle an exceptional group of Lie type that is an alternating or symmetric group. Furthermore, in the remaining open cases we give considerable information about the possible embeddings. Note that no maximal alternating or symmetric subgroups are known in the remaining cases.
This is the first in a sequence of papers aiming to substantially improve the state of knowledge about the maximal subgroups of exceptional groups of Lie type.
The size of minimal generating set for commutator of Sylow 2-subgroup of alternating group was found. Given a permutational wreath product of finite cyclic groups sequence we prove that the commutator width of such groups is 1 and we research some properties of its commutator subgroup. It was shown that $(Syl_2 A_{2^k})^2 = Syl'_2 (A_{2^k}), \, k>2$. A new approach to presentation of Sylow 2-subgroups of alternating group ${A_{2^{k}}}$ was applied. As a result the short proof that the commutator width of Sylow 2-subgroups of alternating group ${A_{2^{k}}}$, permutation group ${S_{2^{k}}}$ and …
A subgroup $H$ of a group $G$ is said to be pronormal in $G$ if $H$ and $H^g$ are conjugate in $\langle H, H^g \rangle$ for every $g \in G$. In this paper we classify finite simple groups $E_6(q)$ and ${}^2E_6(q)$ in which all the subgroups of odd index are pronormal. Thus, we complete a classification of finite simple exceptional groups of Lie type in which all the subgroups of odd index are pronormal.
Given a permutational wreath product sequence of cyclic groups of prime order we research a commutator width of such groups and some properties of its commutator subgroup. Commutator width of Sylow 2-subgroups of alternating group $A_{2^{k}}$, permutation group $S_{2^k}$ and $C_p \wr B$ were founded. The result of research was extended on subgroups $(Syl_2 {A_{2^k}})'$, $p>2$. The paper presents a construction of commutator subgroup of Sylow 2-subgroups of symmetric and alternating groups. Also minimal generic sets of Sylow 2-subgroups of $A_{2^k}$ were founded. Elements presentation of $(Syl_…
This paper is a contribution to the study of the subgroup structure of exceptional algebraic groups over algebraically closed fields of arbitrary characteristic. Following Serre, a closed subgroup of a semisimple algebraic group $G$ is called irreducible if it lies in no proper parabolic subgroup of $G$. In this paper we complete the classification of irreducible connected subgroups of exceptional algebraic groups, providing an explicit set of representatives for the conjugacy classes of such subgroups. Many consequences of this classification are also given. These include results concerning t…
The study of finite subgroups of a simple algebraic group $G$ reduces in a sense to those which are almost simple. If an almost simple subgroup of $G$ has a socle which is not isomorphic to a group of Lie type in the underlying characteristic of $G$, then the subgroup is called non-generic. This paper considers non-generic subgroups of simple algebraic groups of exceptional type in arbitrary characteristic. A finite subgroup is called Lie primitive if it lies in no proper subgroup of positive dimension. We prove here that many non-generic subgroup types, including the alternating and symmetric…
This paper investigate bounds of the commutator width \cite {Mur} of a wreath product of two groups. The commutator width of direct limit of wreath product of cyclic groups are found. For given a permutational wreath product sequence of cyclic groups we investigate its commutator width and some properties of its commutator subgroup. It was proven that the commutator width of an arbitrary element of the wreath product of cyclic groups $C_{p_i}, \, p_i\in \mathbb{N} $ equals to 1. As a corollary, it is shown that the commutator width of Sylows $p$-subgroups of symmetric and alternating groups $p…
We restrict irreducible characters of alternating groups of degree divisible by $p$ to their Sylow $p$-subgroups and study the number of linear constituents.
The current paper is an addition to the previous paper by author, where the overgroup lattice of the elementary subsystem subgroup $E(Δ,R)$ of the Chevalley group $G(Φ,R)$ for a large enough root subsystem $Δ$ was studied. Now we study the connection between the elementary subgroup $\hat{E}(σ)$ given by the net of ideals of the ring $R$ and the stabilizer $S(σ)$ of the corresponding Lie subalgebra of the Chevalley algebra. In particular, we prove that under a certain condition the subgroup $\hat{E}(σ)$ is normal in $S(σ)$, and we also study some properties of the corresponding quotient group.
We study embeddings of $\mathrm{PSL}_2(p^a)$ into exceptional groups $G(p^b)$ for $G=F_4,E_6,{}^2\!E_6,E_7$, and $p$ a prime with $a,b$ positive integers. With a few possible exceptions, we prove that any almost simple group with socle $\mathrm{PSL}_2(p^a)$, that is maximal inside an almost simple exceptional group of Lie type $F_4$, $E_6$, ${}^2\!E_6$ and $E_7$, is the fixed points under the Frobenius map of a corresponding maximal closed subgroup of type $A_1$ inside the algebraic group. Together with a recent result of Burness and Testerman for $p$ the Coxeter number plus one, this proves t…
We prove that the symmetric group $S_n$ has a unique minimal cover $\mathcal{M}$ by maximal nilpotent subgroups, and we obtain an explicit and easily computed formula for the order of $\mathcal{M}$. In addition, we prove that the order of $\mathcal{M}$ is equal to the order of a maximal non-nilpotent subset of $S_n$. This cover $\mathcal{M}$ has attractive properties; for instance, it is a normal cover, and the number of conjugacy classes of subgroups in the cover is equal to the number of partitions of $n$ into distinct positive integers. We show that these results contrast with those for the…
The normal covering number $γ(G)$ of a finite, non-cyclic group $G$ is the minimum number of proper subgroups such that each element of $G$ lies in some conjugate of one of these subgroups. We find lower bounds linear in $n$ for $γ(S_n)$, when $n$ is even, and for $γ(A_n)$, when $n$ is odd.
Dade's conjecture predicts that if p is a prime, then the number of irreducible characters of a finite group of a given p-defect is determined by local subgroups. In this paper we replace $p$ by a set of primes pi and prove a pi-version of Dade's conjecture for pi-separable groups. This extends the (known) p-solvable case of the original conjecture and relates to a pi-version of Alperin's weight conjecture previously established by the authors.
Let $G$ be a simple algebraic group over an algebraically closed field. A closed subgroup $H$ of $G$ is called $G$-completely reducible ($G$-cr) if, whenever $H$ is contained in a parabolic subgroup $P$ of $G$, it is contained in a Levi factor of $P$. In this paper we complete the classification of connected $G$-cr subgroups when $G$ has exceptional type, by determining the $L_{0}$-irreducible connected reductive subgroups for each simple classical factor $L_{0}$ of a Levi subgroup of $G$. As an illustration, we determine all reducible, $G$-cr semisimple subgroups when $G$ has type $F_4$ and v…
The goal of this investigation is effective method of key exchange which based on non-commutative group $G$. The results of Ko et al. \cite{kolee} is improved and generalized. The size of a minimal generating set for the commutator subgroup of Sylow 2-subgroups of alternating group is found. The structure of the commutator subgroup of Sylow 2-subgroups of the alternating group ${A_{2^{k}}}$ is investigated and used in key exchange protocol which based on non-commutative group. We consider non-commutative generalization of CDH problem \cite{gu2013new, bohli2006towards} on base of metacyclic gro…
Given a group $G$ and a subgroup $H$, we let $\mathcal{O}_G(H)$ denote the lattice of subgroups of $G$ containing $H$. This paper provides a classification of the subgroups $H$ of $G$ such that $\mathcal{O}_{G}(H)$ is Boolean of rank at least $3$, when $G$ is a finite alternating or symmetric group. Besides some sporadic examples and some twisted versions, there are two different types of such lattices. One type arises by taking stabilizers of chains of regular partitions, and the other type arises by taking stabilizers of chains of regular product structures. As an application, we prove in th…
We prove that the smallest non-trivial quotients of the commutator subgroups of the braid groups are the alternating groups, proving a conjecture of Chudnovsky-Kordek-Li-Partin. Furthermore, we show that any minimal quotient map is the standard projection, composed with an automorphism of the alternating group.
We study irreducible restrictions from modules over alternating groups to subgroups. We get reduction results which substantially restrict the classes of subgroups and modules for which this is possible. This is known when the characteristic of the ground field is greater than $3$, but the small characteristics cases require a substantially more delicate analysis and new ideas. In view of our earlier work on symmetric groups we may consider only the restriction of irreducible modules over alternating groups which do not extend to symmetric groups. This work fits into the Aschbacher-Scott progr…
Let $\boldsymbol{G}$ be an algebraic group of exceptional Lie type in characteristic $p$, $G=\boldsymbol{G}^σ$ its fixed-point subgroup under the action of a Steinberg endomorphism $σ$, and $\overline{G}$ an almost simple group with socle $G$. A maximal subgroup $M<\overline{G}$ is called non-generic if it is almost simple and its socle is not isomorphic to a group of Lie type in characteristic $p$. A finite subgroup $H$ of $\boldsymbol{G}$ is Lie primitive if it does not lie in any proper closed positive-dimensional subgroup of $\boldsymbol{G}$; it is Lie imprimitive if it lies in a positive-…
There were defined by R. Shwartz OGS for non-abelian groups, as an interesting generalization of the basis of finite abelian groups. The definition of OGS states that that every element of a group has a unique presentation as a product of some powers of the OGS, in a specific given order. In case of the symmetric groups S_{n} there is a paper of R. Shwartz, which demonstrates a strong connection between the OGS and the standard Coxeter presentation of the symmetric group. The OGS presentation helps us to find the Coxeter length and the descent set of an arbitrary element of the symmetric group…
In this article, we study symmetric $(v, k, λ)$ designs admitting a flag-transitive and point-primitive automorphism group $G$ whose socle $X$ is a finite simple exceptional group of Lie type. We prove a reduction theorem, severely restricting the possible parameters of such designs. We also prove that the parameters $k$ and $λ$ are not coprime, and neither of these parameters can be prime. Moreover, if $λ$ is at most $100$, we show that there are two such parameters sets, namely, $(351,126,45)$ and $(378,117,36)$ for $G=X=G_{2}(3)$. Our analysis depends heavily on detailed information about a…

Building on reduction theorems and dimension bounds for symmetric groups obtained in our earlier work, we classify the irreducible restrictions of representations of the symmetric and alternating groups to proper subgroups. Such classification is known when the characteristic of the ground field is greater than $3$, but the small characteristics cases require a substantially more delicate analysis and new ideas. Our results fit into the Aschbacher-Scott program on maximal subgroups of finite classical groups.
We prove that the exceptional group $E_6(2)$ is not a Hurwitz group. In the course of proving this, we complete the classification up to conjugacy of all Hurwitz subgroups of $E_6(2)$, in particular, those isomorphic to $L_2(8)$ and $L_3(2)$.
The generating graph $Γ(G)$ of a finite group $G$ has vertex set the non-identity elements of $G$, with two elements connected exactly when they generate $G$. A coclique in a graph is an empty induced subgraph, so a coclique in $Γ(G)$ is a subset of $G$ such that no pair of elements generate $G$. A coclique is maximal if it is contained in no larger coclique. It is easy to see that the non-identity elements of a maximal subgroup of $G$ form a coclique in $Γ(G)$, but this coclique need not be maximal. In this paper we determine when the intransitive maximal subgroups of $\textrm{S}_n$ and $\tex…
