Some Exceptional Beauville Structures

We first show that every quasisimple sporadic group possesses an unmixed strongly real Beauville structure aside from the Mathieu groups M11 and M23 (and possibly 2B and M). We go on to show that no almost simple sporadic group possesses a mixed Beauville structure. We then go on to use the exceptional nature of the alternating group A6 to give a strongly real Beauville structure for this group explicitly correcting an earlier error of Fuertes and Gonzalez-Diez. In doing so we complete the classification of alternating groups that possess strongly real Beauville structures. We conclude by discussing mixed Beauville structures of the groups A6:2 and A6:2^2.

New Beauville surfaces and finite simple groups

In this paper we construct new Beauville surfaces with group either $\PSL(2,p^e)$, or belonging to some other families of finite simple groups of Lie type of low Lie rank, or an alternating group, or a symmetric group, proving a conjecture of Bauer, Catanese and Grunewald. The proofs rely on probabilistic group theoretical results of Liebeck and Shalev, on classical results of Macbeath and on recent results of Marion.

Beauville surfaces and probabilistic group theory

A Beauville surface is a complex algebraic surface that can be presented as a quotient of a product of two curves by a suitable action of a finite group. Bauer, Catanese and Grunewald have been able to intrinsically characterize the groups appearing in minimal presentations of Beauville surfaces in terms of the existence of a so-called "Beauville structure". Simple groups admit Beauville structures

We answer a conjecture of Bauer, Catanese and Grunewald showing that all finite simple groups other than the alternating group of degree 5 admit unmixed Beauville structures. We also consider an analog of the result for simple algebraic groups which depends on some upper bounds for character values of regular semisimple elements in finite groups of Lie type and obtain definitive results about the variety of triples in semisimple regular classes with product 1. The exact number of r-regular elements in finite exceptional groups

We calculate the precise number of r-regular elements in the finite exceptional groups. As a corollary we find that the proportion of r-regular elements is at least 3577/18432 and for all ε>0, there are infinitely finite simple exceptional groups such that the proportion of r-regular elements is less than $3577/18432+ε$ for some prime r.

Sporadic simple groups and quotient singularities

Graph coverings and (im)primitive homology: some new examples of exceptionally low degree

Given a finite covering of graphs $f : Y \to X$, it is not always the case that $H_1(Y;\mathbb{C})$ is spanned by lifts of primitive elements of $π_1(X)$. In this paper, we study graphs for which this is not the case, and we give here the simplest known nontrivial examples of covers with this property, with covering degree as small as 128.
