We prove that a permutation group in which different finite sets have different stabilizers cannot satisfy any group law. For locally compact topological groups with this property we show that almost all finite subsets of the group generate free subgroups.
We derive consequences of these theorems on Thompson's group $F$, weakly branch groups, automorphism groups of regular trees and profinite groups with alternating composition factors of unbounded degree.
We give a short proof and some strengthening of the Khukhro--Makarenko theorem that each group virtually satisfying an outer commutator identity contains a finite-index characteristic subgroup satisfying this identity. An estimate for the index of this characteristic subgroup is obtained.
A group law is said to be detectable in power subgroups if, for all coprime $m$ and $n$, a group $G$ satisfies the law if and only if the power subgroups $G^m$ and $G^n$ both satisfy the law. We prove that for all positive integers $c$, nilpotency of class at most $c$ is detectable in power subgroups, as is the $k$-Engel law for $k$ at most 4. In contrast, detectability in power subgroups fails for solvability of given derived length: we construct a finite group $W$ such that $W^2$ and $W^3$ are metabelian but $W$ has derived length $3$. We analyse the complexity of the detectability of commut…
In this paper we characterize the finite permutation groups $F<S_d$ on $d$ letters such that every compact open subgroup of the associated universal group $U(F)<{\rm Aut} T_d$ is topologically finitely generated. Actually we show that in this case the groups are positively finitely generated.
Let $G$ be a finite group and $N\unlhd G$. In this note, we construct a class poset of $G$ for some cyclic subgroup $C$ of $G$. And we find a relation between $m_{G,N}$ and the Euler characteristic of some nerve spaces of these posets(see Main Theorem).
If G is a finitely generated powerful pro-p group satisfying a certain law v=1, and if G can be generated by a normal subset T of finite width which satisfies a positive law, we prove that G is nilpotent. Furthermore, the nilpotency class of G can be bounded in terms of the prime p, the number of generators of G, the law v=1, the width of T, and the degree of the positive law. The main interest of this result is the application to verbal subgroups: if G is a p-adic analytic pro-p group in which all values of a word w satisfy positive law, and if the verbal subgroup w(G) is powerful, then w(G) …
Let $G$ be a locally compact topological group, $G_0$ the connected component of its identity element, and comp(G) the union of all compact subgroups. A topological group will be called inductively monothetic if any subgroup generated (as a topological group) by finitely many elements is generated (as a topological group) by a single element. The space SUB(G) of all closed subgroups of $G$ carries a compact Hausdorff topology called the Chabauty topology. Let $F_1(G)$, respectively, $R_1(G)$, denote the subspace of all discrete subgroups isomorphic to $\mathbb Z$, respectively, all subgroups i…
Let k be a local field, and G a linear group over k. We prove that either G contains a relatively open solvable subgroup, or it contains a relatively dense free subgroup. This result has applications in dynamics, Riemannian foliations and profinite groups.
We provide new arguments to see topological Kac-Moody groups as generalized semisimple groups over local fields: they are products of topologically simple groups and their Iwahori subgroups are the normalizers of the pro-p Sylow subgroups. We use a dynamical characterization of parabolic subgroups to prove that some countable Kac-Moody groups with Fuchsian buildings are not linear. We show for this that the linearity of a countable Kac-Moody group implies the existence of a closed embedding of the corresponding topological group in a non-Archimedean simple Lie group, thanks to a commensurator …
We show that every Grigorchuk group $G_ω$ embeds in (the commutator subgroup of) the topological full group of a minimal subshift. In particular, the topological full group of a Cantor minimal system can have subgroups of intermediate growth, a question raised by Grigorchuk; it can also have finitely generated infinite torsion subgroups, as well as residually finite subgroups that are not elementary amenable, answering questions of Cornulier. By estimating the word-complexity of this subshift, we deduce that every Grigorchuk group $G_ω$ can be embedded in a finitely generated simple group that…
In the paper we discuss the algebraic structure of topological full group $[[T]]$ of a Cantor minimal system $(X,T)$. We show that the topological full group $[[T]]$ has the structure similar to a union of permutational wreath products of group $\mathbb Z$. This allows us to prove that the topological full groups are locally embeddable into finite groups; give an elmentary proof of the fact that group $[[T]]'$ is infinitely presented; and provide explicit examples of maximal locally finite subgroups of $[[T]]$. We also show that the commutator subgroup $[[T]]'$, which is simple and finitely-ge…
Given an infinite topological group G and a cardinal k>0, we say that G is almost k-free if the set of k-tuples in G^k which freely generate free subgroups of G is dense in G^k. In this note we examine groups having this property and construct examples. For instance, we show that if G is a non-discrete Hausdorff topological group that contains a dense free subgroup of rank k>0, then G is almost k-free. A consequence of this is that for any infinite set X, the group of all permutations of X is almost 2^|X|-free. We also show that an infinite topological group is almost aleph_0-free if and only …
In this paper we search for conditions on a countably compact (pseudo-compact) topological semigroup under which: (i) each maximal subgroup $H(e)$ in $S$ is a (closed) topological subgroup in $S$; (ii) the Clifford part $H(S)$(i.e. the union of all maximal subgroups) of the semigroup $S$ is a closed subset in $S$; (iii) the inversion $\operatorname{inv}\colon H(S)\to H(S)$ is continuous; and (iv) the projection $π\colon H(S)\to E(S)$, $π\colon x\longmapsto xx^{-1}$, onto the subset of idempotents $E(S)$ of $S$, is continuous.
It is shown that every separable abelian topological group is isomorphic with a topological subgroup of a monothetic group (that is, a topological group with a single topological generator). In particular, every separable metrizable abelian group embeds into a metrizable monothetic group. More generally, we describe all topological groups that can be embedded into monothetic groups: they are exactly abelian topological groups of weight $\leq\frak c$ covered by countably many translations of every nonempty open subset.
Let $M$ be a locally symmetric irreducible closed manifold of dimension $\ge 3$. A result of Borel [Bo] combined with Mostow rigidity imply that there exists a finite group $G = G(M)$ such that any finite subgroup of $\text{Homeo}^+(M)$ is isomorphic to a subgroup of $G$. Borel [Bo] asked if there exist $M$'s with $G(M)$ trivial and if the number of conjugacy classes of finite subgroups of $\text{Homeo}^+(M)$ is finite. We answer both questions: (1) For every finite group $G$ there exist $M$'s with $G(M) = G$, and (2) the number of maximal subgroups of $\text{Homeo}^+(M)$ can be either one, co…
A subgroup $H$ of a topological abelian group $X$ is said to be characterized by a sequence $\mathbf v =(v_n)$ of characters of $X$ if $H=\{x\in X:v_n(x)\to 0\ \text{in}\ \mathbb T\}$. We study the basic properties of characterized subgroups in the general setting, extending results known in the compact case. For a better description, we isolate various types of characterized subgroups. Moreover, we introduce the relevant class of autochacaracterized groups (namely, the groups that are characterized subgroups of themselves by means of a sequence of non-null characters); in the case of locally …
We produce new short laws in two variables valid in finite groups of Lie type. Our result improves upon results of Kozma and the second named author, and is sharp up to logarithmic factors, for all families except possibly the Suzuki groups. We also produce short laws valid for generating pairs and random pairs in finite groups of Lie type, and, conditional on Babai's diameter conjecture, make effective the dependence of our bounds on the rank. Our proof uses, among other tools, the Classification of Finite Simple Groups, Aschbacher's structure theorem for maximal subgroups for classical group…
This paper is devoted to the study of the group ${\rm Ext} (G,H)$ of all extensions of topological abelian groups $0\to H\to X\to G\to 0$ and the group ${\rm Ext}_{TVS} (Z,Y)$ of all extensions of topological vector spaces $0\to Y\to X\to Z\to 0$. We focus on their behaviour under taking products, countable coproducts, dense subgroups and open subgroups. Finally, we apply the obtained properties to formulate in a more general setting some known results in the category of locally compact abelian groups and to determine conditions in which being a topological vector space is a three space proper…
We use topological methods to study the maximal subgroups of the free idempotent generated semigroup on a biordered set. We use these to give an example of a free idempotent generated semigroup with maximal subgroup isomorphic to the free abelian group of rank 2. This is the first example of a non-free subgroup of a free idempotent generated semigroup.
A generalization of the double commutator lemma for normal subgroups is shown for invariant random subgroups of a countable group acting faithfully on a Hausdorff space. As an application, we classify ergodic invariant random subgroups of topological full groups of Cantor minimal $\mathbb{Z}^{d}$-systems. Another corollary is that for an ergodic invariant random subgroup of a branch group, a.e. subgroup $H$ must contain derived subgroups of certain rigid stabilizers. Such results can be applied towards classification of invariant random subgroups of Grigorchuk groups.
We describe the global structure of totally disconnected locally compact groups having a linear open compact subgroup. Among the applications, we show that if a non-discrete, compactly generated, topologically simple, totally disconnected locally compact group is locally linear, then it is a simple algebraic group over a local field.
A paratopological group $G$ is saturated if the inverse $U^{-1}$ of each non-empty set $U\subset G$ has non-empty interior. It is shown that a [first-countable] paratopological group $H$ is a closed subgroup of a saturated (totally bounded) [abelian] paratopological group if and only if $H$ admits a continuous bijective homomorphism onto a (totally bounded) [abelian] topological group $G$ [such that for each neighborhood $U\subset H$ of the unit $e$ there is a closed subset $F\subset G$ with $e\in h^{-1}(F)\subset U$]. As an application we construct a paratopological group whose character exce…
Let p be a prime. We classify finitely generated pro-p groups G which satisfy d(H) = d(G) for all open subgroups H of G. Here d(H) denotes the minimal number of topological generators for the subgroup H. Within the category of p-adic analytic pro-p groups, this answers a question of Iwasawa.
In this paper we deal with the class C of decomposable solvable Lie groups having dimension at most six. We determine those Lie groups in C and their subgroups which are the multiplication group Mult(L) and the inner mapping group Inn(L) for three-dimensional connected simply connected topological loops L. These loops L have one- or two-dimensional centre and their group Mult(L) has two- or three-dimensional commutator subgroup. Together with this result we obtain that every at most 3-dimensional connected topological proper loop having a solvable Lie group of dimension at most six as its mult…
We show that certain algebraic structures lack freeness in the absence of the axiom of choice. These include some subgroups of the Baer-Specker group $\mathbb{Z}^ω$ and the Hawaiian earring group. Applications to slenderness, completely metrizable topological groups, length functions and strongly bounded groups are also presented
Given an action of a group G on a topological space X, we establish a necessary and sufficient condition for the existence of a free subgroup F of rank 2 of G acting properly discontinuously on at least one nonempty, open, F-invariant subspace of X. In the case of a discrete topology (group action on a set X), the condition simply detects free subgroups of rank 2 acting freely on some orbit.
We develop some new topological tools to study maximal subgroups of free idempotent generated semigroups. As an application, we show that the rank 1 component of the free idempotent generated semigroup of the biordered set of a full matrix monoid of n x n matrices, n>2$ over a division ring Q has maximal subgroup isomorphic to the multiplicative subgroup of Q.
Let $X$ be a Hausdorff topological group and $G$ a locally compact subgroup of $X$. We show that $X$ admits a locally finite $σ$-discrete $G$-functionally open cover each member of which is $G$-homeomorphic to a twisted product $G\times_H S_i$, where $H$ is a compact large subgroup of $G$ (i.e., the quotient $G/H$ is a manifold). If, in addition, the space of connected components of $G$ is compact and $X$ is normal, then $X$ itself is $G$-homeomorphic to a twisted product $G\times_KS$, where $K$ is a maximal compact subgroup of $G$. This implies that $X$ is $K$-homeomorphic to the product $G/K…
We provide characterizations of Lie groups as compact-like groups in which all closed zero-dimensional metric (compact) subgroups are discrete. The "compact-like" properties we consider include (local) compactness, (local) omega-boundedness, (local) countable compactness, (local) precompactness, (local) minimality and sequential completeness. Below is a sample of our characterizations: (i) A topological group is a Lie group if and only if it is locally compact and has no infinite compact metric zero-dimensional subgroups. (ii) An abelian topological group G is a Lie group if and only if G is l…
It is a Theorem of W.~ W. Comfort and K.~ A. Ross that if $G$ is a subgroup of a compact Abelian group, and $S$ denotes those continuous homomorphisms from $G$ to the one-dimensional torus, then the topology on $G$ is the initial topology given by $S$. {Assume that $H$ is a subgroup of $G$. We study how} the choice of $S$ affects the topological placement and properties of $H$ in $G$. Among other results, we have {made significant} progress toward the solution of the following specific questions: How many totally bounded group topologies does $G$ admit such that $H$ is a closed (dense) subgrou…
The concept of `topological right transversal' is introduced to study right transversals in topological groups. Given any right quasigroup $S$ with a Tychonoff topology $T$, it is proved that there exists a Hausdorff topological group in which $S$ can be embedded algebraically and topologically as a right transversal of a subgroup (not necessarily closed). It is also proved that if a topological right transversal $(S, T_{S}, T^{S}, \circ)$ is such that $T_{S} = T^{S}$ is a locally compact Hausdorff topology on $S$, then $S$ can be embedded as a right transversal of a closed subgroup in a Hausd…
A topological group is minimal if it does not admit a strictly coarser Hausdorff group topology. The Roelcke uniformity (or lower uniformity) on a topological group is the greatest lower bound of the left and right uniformities. A group is Roelcke-precompact if it is precompact with respect to the Roelcke uniformity. Many naturally arising non-Abelian topological groups are Roelcke-precompact and hence have a natural compactification. We use such compactifications to prove that some groups of isometries are minimal. In particular, if U_1 is the Urysohn universal metric space of diameter 1, the…
We observe a correspondence between collections of closed subgroups and normal subgroups in totally disconnected locally compact groups. This correspondence is applied to prove structure theorems for two classes of totally disconnected locally compact second countable groups: the class of such groups with an open solvable subgroup and the class of such groups with a pro-nilpotent compact open subgroup. As a second application, we give new proofs and generalizations of results of G. Willis and Y. Barnea, M. Ershov, and T. Weigel on totally disconnected locally compact groups which are topologic…
Given a class C of subgroups of a topological group G, we say that a subgroup H in C is a universal C subgroup of G if every subgroup K in C is a continuous homomorphic preimage of H. Such subgroups may be regarded as complete members of C with respect to a natural pre-order on the set of subgroups of G. We show that for any locally compact Polish group G, the countable power of G has a universal K-sigma subgroup and a universal compactly generated subgroup. We prove a weaker version of this in the non-locally compact case and provide an example showing that this result cannot readily be impro…
For a compact Hausdorff abelian group K and its subgroup H, one defines the g-closure g(H) of H in K as the subgroup consisting of $χ\in K$ such that $χ(a_n)\longrightarrow 0$ in T=R/Z for every sequence {a_n} in $\hat K$ (the Pontryagin dual of K) that converges to 0 in the topology that H induces on $\hat K$. We prove that every countable subgroup of a compact Hausdorff group is g-closed, and thus give a positive answer to two problems of Dikranjan, Milan and Tonolo. We also show that every g-closed subgroup of a compact Hausdorff group is realcompact. The techniques developed in the paper a…
The sets of closed and closed-normal subgroups of a profinite group carry a natural profinite topology. Through a combination of algebraic and topological methods the size of these subgroup spaces is calculated, and the spaces partially classified up to homeomorphism.
We prove a generalisation of the Khukhro--Makarenko theorem on large characteristic subgroups with laws. This general fact implies new results on groups, algebras, and even graphs and other structures. Concerning groups, we obtain, e.g., a fact in a sense dual to the Khukhro--Makarenko theorem. A graph-theoretic corollary is an analogue of this theorem in which planarity plays the role of a multilinear identity. We answer also a question of Makarenko and Shumyatsky.
Without assuming the field structure on the additive group of real numbers $\mathbb{R}$ with the usual order $<,$ we explore the fact that every proper subgroup of $\mathbb{R}$ is either closed or dense. This property of subgroups of the additive group of reals is special and well known (see Abels and Monoussos [4]). However, by revisiting it, we provide another direct proof. We also generalize this result to arbitrary topological groups in the sense that, any topological group having this property of the subgroups in a given topology is either connected or totally disconnected.
We prove:(1) the existence, for every integer n > 3, of a noncompact smooth n-dimensional topological manifold whose diffeomorphism group contains an isomorphic copy of every finitely presented group; (2) a finiteness theorem on finite simple subgroups of diffeomorphism groups of compact smooth topological manifolds.
We study relatively minimal subgroups in topological groups. We find, in particular, some natural relatively minimal subgroups in unipotent groups which are defined over "good" rings. By "good" rings we mean archimedean absolute valued (not necessarily associative) division rings. Some of the classical rings which we consider besides the field of reals are the ring of quaternions and the ring of octonions. This way we generalize in part a previous result which was obtained by Dikranjan and Megrelishvili and involved the Heisenberg group.
Recently the adjoint algebraic entropy of endomorphisms of abelian groups was introduced and studied. We generalize the notion of adjoint entropy to continuous endomorphisms of topological abelian groups. Indeed, the adjoint algebraic entropy is defined using the family of all finite-index subgroups, while we take only the subfamily of all open finite-index subgroups to define the topological adjoint entropy. This allows us to compare the (topological) adjoint entropy with the known topological entropy of continuous endomorphisms of compact abelian groups. In particular, the topological adjoin…
We define the notion of uniformly recurrent subgroup, URS in short, which is a topological analog of the notion of invariant random subgroup (IRS), introduced in a work of M. Abert, Y. Glasner and B. Virag. Our main results are as follows. (i) It was shown by B. Weiss that for an arbitrary countable infinite group G, any free ergodic probability measure preserving G-system admits a minimal model. In contrast we show here, using URS's, that for the lamplighter group there is an ergodic measure preserving action which does not admit a minimal model. (ii) For an arbitrary countable group G, every…
A topological group is minimal if it does not admit a strictly coarser Hausdorff group topology. We provide a sufficient and necessary condition for the minimality of the semidirect product $G\leftthreetimes P,$ where $G$ is a compact topological group and $P$ is a topological subgroup of $Aut(G)$. We prove that $G\leftthreetimes P$ is minimal for every closed subgroup $P$ of $Aut(G)$. In case $G$ is abelian, the same is true for every subgroup $P \subseteq Aut(G)$. We show, in contrast, that there exist a compact two-step nilpotent group $G$ and a subgroup $P$ of $Aut(G)$ such that $G\leftthr…
We prove that any meager quasi-analytic subgroup of a topological group $G$ belongs to every $σ$-ideal $\mathcal I$ on $G$ possessing the closed $\pm n$-Steinhaus property for some $n\in\mathbb N$. An ideal $\mathcal I$ on a topological group $G$ is defined to have the closed $\pm n$-Steinhaus property if for any closed subsets $A_1,\dots,A_n\notin\mathcal I$ of $G$ the product $(A_1\cup A_1^{-1})\cdots (A_n\cup A_n^{-1})$ is not nowhere dense in $G$. Since the $σ$-ideal $\mathcal E$ generated by closed Haar null sets in a locally compact group $G$ has the closed $\pm 2$-Steinhaus property, we…
A topological space is called {\it dense-separable} if each dense subset of its is separable. Therefore, each dense-separable space is separable. We establish some basic properties of dense-separable topological groups. We prove that each separable space with a countable tightness is dense-separable, and give a dense-separable topological group which is not hereditarily separable. We also prove that, for a Hausdorff locally compact group , it is locally dense-separable iff it is metrizable. Moreover, we study dense-subgroup-separable topological groups. We prove that, for each compact torsion …
Let $\mathcal C$ be a class of topological semigroups. A semigroup $X$ is called (1) $\mathcal C$-$closed$ if $X$ is closed in every topological semigroup $Y\in\mathcal C$ containing $X$ as a discrete subsemigroup, (2) $ideally$ $\mathcal C$-$closed$ if for any ideal $I$ in $X$ the quotient semigroup $X/I$ is $\mathcal C$-closed; (3) $absolutely$ $\mathcal C$-$closed$ if for any homomorphism $h:X\to Y$ to a topological semigroup $Y\in\mathcal C$, the image $h[X]$ is closed in $Y$, (4) $injectively$ $\mathcal C$-$closed$ (resp. $\mathcal C$-$discrete$) if for any injective homomorphism $h:X\to …
We show that the topological groups $Diff_{+}^{1}(I)$ and $Diff_{+}^{1}(\mathbb{S}^1)$ of orientation-preserving $C^1$-diffeomorphisms of the interval and the circle, respectively, admit finitely generated dense subgroups. We also investigate the question of genericity (in the sense of Baire category) of such finite topological generating sets in related groups. We show that the generic pair of elements in the homeomorphism group $Homeo_+(I)$ generate a dense subgroup of $Homeo_+(I)$. By contrast, if $M$ is any compact connected manifold with boundary other than the interval, we observe that a…
