An almost Abelian Lie group is a non-Abelian Lie group with a codimension 1 Abelian subgroup. We show that all discrete subgroups of complex simply connected almost Abelian groups are finitely generated. The topology of connected almost Abelian Lie groups is studied by expressing each connected almost Abelian Lie group as a quotient of its universal covering group by a discrete normal subgroup. We then prove that no complex connected almost Abelian group is compact, and give conditions for the compactness of connected subgroups of such groups. Towards studying the homotopy type of complex connected almost Abelian groups, we investigate the maximal compact subgroups of such groups.
An almost Abelian Lie algebra is a non-Abelian Lie algebra with a codimension 1 Abelian ideal. Most 3-dimensional real Lie algebras are almost Abelian, and they appear in every branch of physics that deals with anisotropic media - cosmology, crystallography etc. In differential geometry and theoretical physics, almost Abelian Lie groups have given rise to some of the simplest solvmanifolds on which various geometric structures such as symplectic, Kähler, spin etc., are currently studied in explicit terms. However, a systematic study of almost Abelian Lie groups and algebras from mathematics pe…

The majority of 3-dimensional real Lie groups are almost Abelian, and they appear in all parts of physics that deal with anisotropic media - cosmology, crystallography etc. In theoretical physics and differential geometry, almost Abelian Lie groups and their homogeneous spaces provide some of the simplest solvmanifolds on which a variety of geometric structures such as symplectic, Kähler, spin etc., are currently studied in explicit terms. Recently, almost Abelian Lie algebras were classified a…
For certain uncountable cardinals $κ$ we produce a group of cardinality $κ$ which is freely indecomposable, strongly $κ$-free, and whose abelianization is free abelian of rank $κ$. The construction takes place in Gödel's constructible universe $L$. This strengthens an earlier result of Eklof and Mekler.
This paper is devoted to the study of the group ${\rm Ext} (G,H)$ of all extensions of topological abelian groups $0\to H\to X\to G\to 0$ and the group ${\rm Ext}_{TVS} (Z,Y)$ of all extensions of topological vector spaces $0\to Y\to X\to Z\to 0$. We focus on their behaviour under taking products, countable coproducts, dense subgroups and open subgroups. Finally, we apply the obtained properties to formulate in a more general setting some known results in the category of locally compact abelian groups and to determine conditions in which being a topological vector space is a three space proper…
A topological group G is said to be almost maximally almost-periodic if its von Neumann radical is non-trivial, but finite. In this paper, we prove that every abelian group with an infinite torsion subgroup admits a (Hausdorff) almost maximally almost-periodic group topology. Some open problems are also formulated.
Sacerdote [Sa] has shown that the non-Abelian free groups satisfy precisely the same universal-existential sentences Th(F$_2$)$\cap \forall \exists $ in a first-order language L$_o$ appropriate for group theory. It is shown that in every model of Th(F$_2$)$\cap \forall \exists $ the maximal Abelian subgroups are elementarily equivalent to locally cyclic groups (necessarily nontrivial and torsion free). Two classes of groups are interpolated between the non-Abelian locally free groups and Remeslennikov's $\exists $-free groups. These classes are the \textbf{almost locally free groups} and the \…
Following [23], denote by $\mathfrak{F}_0$ the functor on the category $\mathbf{TAG}$ of all Hausdorff Abelian topological groups and continuous homomorphisms which passes each $X\in \mathbf{TAG}$ to the group of all $X$-valued null sequences endowed with the uniform topology. We prove that if $X\in \mathbf{TAG}$ is an $(E)$-space (respectively, a strictly angelic space or a Š-space), then $\mathfrak{F}_0 (X)$ is an $(E)$-space (respectively, a strictly angelic space or a Š-space). We study respected properties for topological groups in particular from categorical point of view. Using this inv…
We call a linear operator on a vector space over a field Jordanable if it has a Jordan canonical form. An almost Abelian Lie algebra has only one non-vanishing Lie bracket, which is given by a linear operator. If the latter is Jordanable then we call the almost Abelian Lie algebra Jordanable. The existence of canonical form allows to describe important structural properties of these Lie algebras in explicit terms. Lie subalgebras, ideals, automorphisms and derivations, as well as quadratic Casimir elements are given in explicitly in a suitable basis.
For any countable torsion subgroup $H$ of an unbounded Abelian group $G$ there is a complete Hausdorff group topology $τ$ such that $H$ is the von Neumann radical of $(G,τ)$. In particular, any unbounded torsion countable Abelian group admits a complete Hausdorff minimally almost periodic (MinAP) group topology. If $G$ is a bounded torsion countably infinite Abelian group, then it admits a MinAP group topology if and only if all its leading Ulm-Kaplansky invariants are infinite. In such a case, a MinAP group topology can be chosen to be complete.
For any countable subgroup $H$ of an unbounded Abelian group $G$ there is a complete Hausdorff group topology $τ$ such that $H$ is the von Neumann radical of $(G,τ)$. In particular, we obtain the positive answer to Comfort's question: any unbounded countable Abelian group admits a complete Hausdorff minimally almost periodic (MinAP) group topology. A bounded infinite Abelian group admits a MinAP group topology if and only if all its leading Ulm-Kaplansky invariants are infinite. If, in addition, $G$ is countably infinite, a MinAP group topology can be chosen to be complete.
Let $A$ be an abelian topological $G$-module. We give an interpretion for the second cohomology, $H^{2}(G,A)$, of $G$ with coefficients in $A$. As a result we show that if $P$ is a projective topological group, then $H^{2}(P,A)=0$ for every abelian topological $P$-module $A$.
In this paper we introduce a new definition of the first non-abelian cohomology of topological groups. We relate the cohomology of a normal subgroup $N$ of a topological group $G$ and the quotient $G/N$ to the cohomology of $G$. We get the inflation-restriction exact sequence. Also, we obtain a seven-term exact cohomology sequence up to dimension 2. We give an interpretation of the first non-abelian cohomology of a topological group by the notion of a principle homogeneous space.
Recently Außenhofer and the author independently have shown that the free abelian topological group $A(\mathbf{s})$ over a convergent sequence $\mathbf{s}$ does not admit the strongest compatible locally quasi-convex group topology that gives the first example of a locally quasi-convex abelian group without a Mackey group topology. In this note we considerably extend this example by showing that the free abelian topological group $A(X)$ over a non-discrete zero-dimensional metrizable space $X$ does not have a Mackey group topology. In particular, for every countable non-discrete metrizable spa…
The topological data of a group action on a compact Riemann surface is often encoded using a tuple $(h;m_1,\dots ,m_s)$ called its signature. There are two easily verifiable arithmetic conditions on a tuple necessary for it to be a signature of some group action. In the following, we derive necessary and sufficient conditions on a group $G$ for when these arithmetic conditions are in fact sufficient to be a signature for all but finitely many tuples that satisfy them. As a consequence, we show that all non-Abelian finite simple groups exhibit this property.
We study the algorithmic content of Pontryagin - van Kampen duality. We prove that the dualization is computable in the important cases of compact and locally compact totally disconnected Polish abelian groups. The applications of our main results include solutions to questions of Kihara and Ng about presentations of connected Polish spaces, and an unexpected arithmetical characterisation of direct products of solenoid groups among all Polish groups.
A topological group $X$ is defined to have $compact$ $exponent$ if for some number $n\in\mathbb N$ the set $\{x^n:x\in X\}$ has compact closure in $X$. Any such number $n$ will be called a compact exponent of $X$. Our principal result states that a complete Abelian topological group $X$ has compact exponent (equal to $n\in\mathbb N$) if and only if for any injective continuous homomorphism $f:X\to Y$ to a topological group $Y$ and every $y\in \bar{f(X)}$ there exists a positive number $k$ (equal to $n$) such that $y^k\in f(X)$. This result has many interesting implications: (1) an Abelian topo…
We deal with some pcf investigations mostly motivated by abelian group theory problems and deal their applications to test problems (we expect reasonably wide applications). We prove almost always the existence of aleph_omega-free abelian groups with trivial dual, i.e. no non-trivial homomorphisms to the integers. This relies on investigation of pcf; more specifically, for this we prove that "almost always" there are F subseteq lambda^kappa which are quite free and has black boxes. The "almost always" means that there are strong restrictions on cardinal arithmetic if the universe fails this, t…
Let $L/K$ be a Galois extension of fields with Galois group $G$, an elementary abelian $p$-group of rank $n$ for $p$ an odd prime. It is known that nilpotent $\mathbb{F}_p$-algebra structures $A$ on $G$ yield regular subgroups of the holomorph of $G$, hence Hopf Galois structures on $L/K$. In this paper we illustrate the richness of Hopf Galois structures on $L/K$ by examining the case where $A$ is abelian of dimension $n$ where the dimension of $A^2 = 1$. We determine the number of Hopf Galois structures that arise in these cases, describe those structures explicitly, and estimate the extent …
Recently the adjoint algebraic entropy of endomorphisms of abelian groups was introduced and studied. We generalize the notion of adjoint entropy to continuous endomorphisms of topological abelian groups. Indeed, the adjoint algebraic entropy is defined using the family of all finite-index subgroups, while we take only the subfamily of all open finite-index subgroups to define the topological adjoint entropy. This allows us to compare the (topological) adjoint entropy with the known topological entropy of continuous endomorphisms of compact abelian groups. In particular, the topological adjoin…
We construct an embedding G of the category of graphs into the category of abelian groups such that for graphs X and Y we have Hom(GX,GY)=Z[Hom(X,Y)], the free abelian group whose basis is the set Hom(X,Y). The isomorphism is functorial in X and Y. The existence of such an embedding implies that, contrary to a common belief, the category of abelian groups is as complex and comprehensive as any other concrete category. We use this embedding to settle an old problem of Isbell whether every full subcategory of the category of abelian groups, which is closed under limits, is reflective. A positive…
We begin with the existence of groups with trivial duals for cardinals aleph_n (n in omega). Then we derive results about strongly aleph_n-free abelian groups of cardinality aleph_n (n in omega) with prescribed free, countable endomorphism ring. Finally we use combinatorial results of [Sh:108], [Sh:141] to give similar answers for cardinals >aleph_omega. As in Magidor and Shelah [MgSh:204], a paper concerned with the existence of kappa-free, non-free abelian groups of cardinality kappa, the induction argument breaks down at aleph_omega. Recall that aleph_omega is the first singular cardinal an…
We study the locally compact abelian groups in the class $\mathfrak E_{<\infty}$, that is, having only continuous endomorphisms of finite topological entropy, and in its subclass $\mathfrak E_0$, that is, having all continuous endomorphisms with vanishing topological entropy. We discuss the reduction of the problem to the case of periodic locally compact abelian groups, and then to locally compact abelian $p$-groups. We show that locally compact abelian $p$-groups of finite rank belong to $\mathfrak E_{<\infty}$, and that those of them that belong to $\mathfrak E_0$ are precisely the ones with…
For a topological monoid S the dual inverse monoid is the topological monoid of all identity preserving homomorphisms from S to the circle with attached zero. A topological monoid S is defined to be reflexive if the canonical homomorphism from S to its second dual inverse monoid is a topological isomorphism. We prove that a (compact or discrete) topological inverse monoid S is reflexive (if and) only if S is abelian and the idempotent semilattice of S is zero-dimensional. For a discrete (resp. compact) topological monoid its dual inverse monoid is compact (resp. discrete). These results unify …
