英文摘要:
Determining the mixing time of Kac's random walk on the sphere $\mathrm{S}^{n-1}$ is a long-standing open problem. We show that the total variation mixing time of Kac's walk on $\mathrm{S}^{n-1}$ is between $\frac{1}{2} \, n \log(n)$ and $200 \,n \log(n)$. Our bound is thus optimal up to a constant factor, improving on the best-known upper bound of $O(n^{5} \log(n)^{2})$ due to Jiang. Our main tool is a `non-Markovian' coupling recently introduced by the second author for obtaining the convergence rates of certain high dimensional Gibbs samplers in continuous state spaces.
We introduce a Kac's type walk whose rate of binary collisions preserves the total momentum but not the kinetic energy. In the limit of large number of particles we describe the dynamics in terms of empirical measure and flow, proving the corresponding large deviation principle. The associated rate function has an explicit expression. As a byproduct of this analysis, we provide a gradient flow formulation of the Boltzmann-Kac equation.
In this work, we analyze dimension reduction algorithms based on the Kac walk and discrete variants. (1) For $n$ points in $\mathbb{R}^{d}$, we design an optimal Johnson-Lindenstrauss (JL) transform based on the Kac walk which can be applied to any vector in time $O(d\log{d})$ for essentially the same restriction on $n$ as in the best-known transforms due to Ailon and Liberty [SODA, 2008], and Bamberger and Krahmer [arXiv, 2017]. Our algorithm is memory-optimal, and outperforms existing algorithms in regimes when $n$ is sufficiently large and the distortion parameter is sufficiently small. In …

In this paper we survey the theory of random walks on buildings and associated groups of Lie type and Kac-Moody groups. We begin with an introduction to the theory of Coxeter systems and buildings, taking a largely combinatorial perspective. We then survey the theory of random walks on buildings, and show how this theory leads to limit theorems for random walks on the associated groups.
We give bounds in total variation distance for random walks associated to pure central states on free orthogonal quantum groups. As a consequence, we prove that the analogue of the uniform plane Kac walk on this quantum group has a cut-off at $N\ln(N)/2(1-\cos(θ))$. This is the first result of this type for genuine compact quantum groups. We also obtain similar results for mixtures of rotations and quantum permutations.
We propose and study a certain discrete time counterpart of the classical Feynman--Kac semigroup with a confining potential in countable infinite spaces. For a class of long range Markov chains which satisfy the direct step property we prove sharp estimates for functions which are (sub-, super-)harmonic in infinite sets with respect to the discrete Feynman--Kac operators. These results are compared with respective estimates for the case of a nearest-neighbour random walk which evolves on a graph of finite geometry. We also discuss applications to the decay rates of solutions to equations invol…
This is the third in a series of papers in which we consider one-dimensional Random Walk in Cooling Random Environment (RWCRE). The latter is obtained by starting from one-dimensional Random Walk in Random Environment (RWRE) and resampling the environment along a sequence of deterministic times, called refreshing times. In the present paper we explore two questions for general refreshing times. First, we investigate how the recurrence versus transience criterion known for RWRE changes for RWCRE. Second, we explore the fluctuations for RWCRE when RWRE is either recurrent or satisfies a classica…
We analyze the large deviations for a discrete energy Kac-like walk. In particular, we exhibit a path, with probability exponentially small in the number of particles, that looses energy.
A second-order random walk on a graph or network is a random walk where transition probabilities depend not only on the present node but also on the previous one. A notable example is the non-backtracking random walk, where the walker is not allowed to revisit a node in one step. Second-order random walks can model physical diffusion phenomena in a more realistic way than traditional random walks and have been very successfully used in various network mining and machine learning settings. However, numerous questions are still open for this type of stochastic processes. In this work we extend w…
We introduce a general class of random walks on the $N$-hypercube, study cut-off for the mixing time, and provide several types of representation for the transition probabilities. We observe that for a sub-class of these processes with long range (i.e. non-local) there exists a critical value of the range that allows an "almost-perfect" mixing in at most three steps. In other words, the total variation distance between the three steps transition and the stationary distribution decreases geometrically in $N$, which is the dimension of the hypercube. In some cases, the walk mixes almost-perfectl…
Given integers $d \geq 2, n \geq 1$, we consider affine random walks on torii $(\mathbb{Z} / n \mathbb{Z})^{d}$ defined as $X_{t+1} = A X_{t} + B_{t} \mod n$, where $A \in \mathrm{GL}_{d}(\mathbb{Z})$ is an invertible matrix with integer entries and $(B_{t})_{t \geq 0}$ is a sequence of iid random increments on $\mathbb{Z}^{d}$. We show that when $A$ has no eigenvalues of modulus $1$, this random walk mixes in $O(\log n \log \log n)$ steps as $n \rightarrow \infty$, and mixes actually in $O(\log n)$ steps only for almost all $n$. These results generalize those on the so-called Chung-Diaconis-G…
