The exchange bias (EB) effect has been observed in magnetic Bi$_{0.9}$Gd$_{0.1}$Fe$_{0.9}$Ti$_{0.1}$O$_3$ nanoparticles. The influence of magnetic field cooling on the exchange bias effect has also been investigated. The magnitude of the exchange bias field ($H_{EB}$) increases with the cooling magnetic field, showing that the strength of the exchange bias effect is tunable by the field cooling. The $H_{EB}$ values are also found to be dependent on the temperature. This magnetically tunable exchange bias obtained at temperatures up to 250 K in Bi$_{0.9}$Gd$_{0.1}$Fe$_{0.9}$Ti$_{0.1}$O$_3$ nanoparticles may be worthwhile for potential applications.
We investigate the magnetization dynamics of a conducting magnetic nanoparticle weakly coupled to source and drain electrodes, under the assumption that all relaxation comes from exchange of electrons with the electrodes. The magnetization dynamics is characterized by a relaxation time $t_1$, which strongly depends on temperature, bias voltage, and gate voltage. While a direct measure of a nanoparticle magnetization might be difficult, we find that $t_1$ can be determined through a time resolved transport measurement. For a suitable choice of gate voltage and bias voltage, the magnetization pe…
Spin-polarized current through an Al nanoparticle in tunnel contact with two ferromagnets is measured as a function of the direction of the applied magnetic field. The nanoparticle filters the spin of injected electrons along a direction specified by the magnetic field. The characteristic field scale for the filtering corresponds to a lower limit of $8ns$ for the spin-dephasing time. Spin polarized current versus applied voltage increases stepwise, confirming that the spin relaxation time is long only in the ground state and the low-lying excited states of the nanoparticle.
We consider a simple cubic array of metallic nanoparticles supporting extended collective plasmons that arise from the near-field dipolar interaction between localized surface plasmons in each nanoparticle. We develop a fully analytical quantum theory of the strong-coupling regime between these collective plasmons and photons resulting in plasmon polaritons in the nanoparticle array. Remarkably, we show that the polaritonic band gap and the dielectric function of the metamaterial can be significantly modulated by the polarization of light. We unveil how such an anisotropic behavior in the plas…
A series of fluorescein-encapsulated zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (fluorescein@ZIF-8) luminescent nanoparticles with a scalable guest loading has been fabricated and characterized. The successful encapsulation of the organic dye (fluorescein) is supported by both experimental evidence and theoretical simulations. The measured optical band gap is found to be comparable with the computed values of a hypothetical guest-host system. Isolated monomers and aggregates species of fluorescein confined in ZIF-8 nanocrystals have been systematically investigated through fluorescence lifetime spectros…
Using magnetron sputtering, we produced a series of Co/CoO-MgO nanoparticles on Si(100) substrates. High-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) image shows that small isolated Co-clusters (core) covered with CoO (shells) with a size of a few nm embedded in a MgO matrix. Resistivity as a function of Co atomic ratio exhibits a distinct percolation threshold with a sharp decrease around 69% Co content. Across the threshold, the resistivity drops about 7 orders of magnitude. For a sample at this percolation critical threshold, we have observed a giant exchange bias field HE=2460 Oe at…
The dynamical motion of the magnetization plays a key role in the properties of magnetic materials. If the magnetization is initially away from the equilibrium direction in a magnetic nanoparticle, it will precess at a natural frequency and, with some damping present, will decay to the equilibrium position in a short lifetime. Here we investigate a simple but important situation where a magnetic nanoparticle is driven non-resonantly by an oscillating magnetic field, not at the natural frequency. We find a surprising result that the lifetime of the transient motion is strongly tunable, by facto…
Two-dimensional semiconducting transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) are extremely attractive materials for optoelectronic applications in the visible and near-IR range. Here, we address for the first time to the best of our knowledge the issue of resonance coupling in hybrid exciton-polariton structures based on single Si nanoparticles coupled to monolayer WS2. We predict a transition from weak to strong coupling regime , with a Rabi splitting energy exceeding 200 meV for a Si nanoparticle covered by monolayer WS 2 at the magnetic optical Mie resonance. This large transition is achieved du…
We obtained the electron-lattice energy transfer constant in metal nanoparticles (MN), in quantum-mechanical and classical approach using the deformation potential Bardeen-Shockley and found the changes of the electron-lattice energy exchange (due to the finite size MN) in the quantum kinetic approach caused by the discrete phonon spectrum. The condition when the discrete phonon spectrum could be observed via the electron-phonon energy exchange has been obtained. It was shown that the classical approach can be generalized for metallic clusters with ballistic motion of electrons (electrons move…
We report exchange bias (EB) effect in the Au-Fe3O4 composite nanoparticle system, where one or more Fe3O4 nanoparticles are attached to an Au seed particle forming dimer and cluster morphologies, with the clusters showing much stronger EB in comparison with the dimers. The EB effect develops due to the presence of stress in the Au-Fe3O4 interface which leads to the generation of highly disordered, anisotropic surface spins in the Fe3O4 particle. The EB effect is lost with the removal of the interfacial stress. Our atomistic Monte-Carlo studies are in excellent agreement with the experimental …
We use spin-density-functional theory (SDFT) ab initio calculations to theoretically explore the possibility of achieving useful gate control over exchange coupling between cobalt clusters placed on a graphene sheet. By applying an electric field across supercells we demonstrate that the exchange interaction is strongly dependent on gate voltage, but find that it is also sensitive to the relative sublattice registration of the cobalt clusters. We use our results to discuss strategies for achieving strong and reproducible magneto-electric effects in graphene/transition-metal hybrid systems.
A topological state with simultaneous nonzero Chern number and spin Chern number is possible for electrons on honeycomb lattice based on band engineering by staggered electric potential and antiferromagnetic exchange field in presence of intrinsic spin-orbit coupling. With first principles calculation we confirm that the scheme can be realized by material modification in perovskite G-type antiferromagnetic insulators grown along [111] direction, where d electrons hop on a single buckled honeycomb lattice. This material is ideal for spintronics applications, since it provides a spin-polarized q…
We have observed enhancement and shift in the spin reorientation transition temperature as a consequence of coexistence of orthorhombic and hexagonal phases and higher aspect ratio in nanoscale LuFeO3. Nanoparticles and nanofibers of LuFeO3 are considered for this work. Nanoparticles have 75 % orthorhombic phase and 25 % hexagonal phase, while nanofibers have 23% orthorhombic phase and 77%-hexagonal phase. Larger aspect ratio in case of nanofibers is seen to help strain-stabilize the hexagonal phase in the material. Magnetic measurements show significant difference in the magnetic behavior and…
We have observed conventional signature of exchange bias (EB), in form of shift in field-cooled (FC) hysteresis loop, and training effect, in BiFe0.8Mn0.2O3 nanoparticles. From neutron diffraction, thermoremanent magnetization and isothermoremanent magnetization measurements, the nanoparticles are found to be core-shell in nature, consisting of an antiferromagnetic (AFM) core, and a 2-dimensional diluted AFM (DAFF) shell with a net magnetization under a field. The analysis of the training effect data using the Binek's model shows that the observed loop shift arises entirely due to an interface…
Understanding the size- and shape-dependent properties of platinum nanoparticles is critical for enabling the design of nanoparticle-based applications with optimal and potentially tunable functionality. Toward this goal, we evaluated nine different empirical potentials with the purpose of accurately modeling faceted platinum nanoparticles using molecular dynamics simulation. First, the potentials were evaluated by computing bulk and surface properties-surface energy, lattice constant, stiffness constants, and the equation of state-and comparing these to prior experimental measurements and qua…
We study the low-temperature isothermal magnetic hysteresis of cubical and spherical nanoparticles with ferromagnetic (FM) core - antiferromagnetic (AF) shell morphology, in order to elucidate the sensitivity of the exchange bias effect to the shape of the particles and the structural imperfections at the core-shell interface. We model the magnetic structure using a classical Heisenberg Hamiltonian with uniaxial anisotropy and simulate the hysteresis loop using the Metropolis Monte Carlo algorithm. For nanoparticles with geometrically sharp interfaces, we find that cubes exhibit higher coerciv…
We studied the magnetic properties of self-assembled aggregates of BiFeO3 nanoparticles (~ 20-40 nm). The aggregates formed two different structures - one with limited and another with massive cross-linking - via `drying-mediated self-assembly' process following dispersion of the nanoparticles within different organic solvents. They exhibit large coercivity H_C (>1000 Oe) and exchange bias field H_E (~ 350-900 Oe) in comparison to what is observed in isolated nanoparticles (H_C ~ 250 Oe; H_E ~ 0). The H_E turns out to be switching from negative to positive depending on the structure of the agg…
Using cryogenic scanning tunnelling microscopy and scanning tunnelling spectroscopy we measured single electron tunnelling of isolated Au nanoparticles with 1.4 nm in radius. We observe that a gap ΔV ~ 2e/C (C is the capacitance of the Au particle) around zero bias in the tunnelling conductance spectrum, followed by a series of discrete single electron tunnelling peaks with voltage widths of EC ~ e/C at both negative and positive bias. Experimental data are well explained by taking into account the effect of exchange interaction of electrons on the single electron tunnelling of Au nanoparticle…
We report the precise control of tunneling magnetoresistance (TMR) in devices of self-assembled core/shell Fe$_3$O$_4$/Co$_{1-x}$Zn$_x$Fe$_2$O$_4$ nanoparticles ($0\leq x\leq 1$). Adjusting the magnetic anisotropy through the content of Co$^{2+}$ in the shell, provides an accurate tool to control the switching field between the bistable states of the TMR. In this way, different combinations of soft/hard and hard/soft core/shell configurations can be envisaged for optimizing devices with the required magnetotransport response.
The work is dedicated to the development of the electron-lattice energy exchange theory in metal particles and it dependence of on particle size and electron temperature. We obtained the expressions for the constants of the electron-lattice energy exchange using the quantum-kinetic approach for infinite metal, and compared it with the result of classical kinetic approach. Both methods give the same result. But for the metal particles smaller than the mean free path of electrons, as we show, a quantum-kinetic approach (in its standard form) can not be applied, while the classical approach can b…
Magnetic doping of semiconductor nanostructures is actively pursued for applications in magnetic memory and spin-based electronics. Central to these efforts is a drive to control the interaction strength between carriers (electrons and holes) and the embedded magnetic atoms. In this respect, colloidal nanocrystal heterostructures provide great flexibility via growth-controlled `engineering' of electron and hole wavefunctions within individual nanocrystals. Here we demonstrate a widely tunable magnetic sp-d exchange interaction between electron-hole excitations (excitons) and paramagnetic manga…
The utility of nanoscaled ferromagnetic particles requires both stabilized moments and maximized switching speeds. During reversal, the spatial modulation of the nanoparticle magnetization evolves in time, and the energy differences between each new configuration are accomodated by the absorption or emission spin waves with different wavelengths and energy profiles. The switching speed is limited by how quickly this spin wave energy is dissipated. We present here the first observation of dispersing spin waves in a nanoscaled system, using neutron scattering to detect spin waves in the CoO shel…
We show that the observed non-monotonic behavior of the thermal conductance between two nanoparticles when they are brought into contact is originated by an intricate phase space dynamics. Here it is assumed that this dynamics results from the thermally activated jumping through a rough energy landscape. A hierarchy of relaxation times plays the key role in the description of this complex phase space behaviour. Our theory enables us to analyze the heat transfer just before and at the moment of contact.
We report a simple, efficient manner to assess magnetic interactions, more specifically the exchange interaction, in systems as blocked magnetic nanoparticles. Specifically, we investigate what is the theoretical limit for the external magnetic susceptibility in a system described by the plain old Stoner-Wohlfarth model. We go beyond and introduce a general mean field theory for interacting systems, thus estimating how the magnetic susceptibility is affected due to the dipolar and exchange interactions inside the system. We disclose a fundamental inequality for the magnetic susceptibility and …
We theoretically investigate the exchange interaction between magnetic impurities in ultrathin Bi$_2$Se$_3$ topological insulator films by taking into account the low-energy states produced by the impurities. We find that the locally induced impurity resonances strongly influence the exchange interaction between magnetic moments. In particular, we find a non-collinear alignment being more favorable than the collinear ferromagnetic alignment preferred when impurity states are ignored and only the pristine topological insulator band structure is considered. Moreover, we show that by applying of …
We have developed a model for the interacting ore/shell nanoparticles, which we used to analyze the dependence of the coercive field Hc, the remanent saturation magnetization Mrs and the satu- ration magnetization Ms on the interfacial exchange interaction between the core and the shell, the size of the nanoparticles and their interaction for Fe/Fe3O4 nanoparticles have been carried out. It has been shown that the hysteresis characteristics increase together with the size of nanoparticles. Hc and Mrs are changing nonmonotonic when the constant interfacial exchange interaction changes from nega…
We study the behavior of charged spherical Au nanoparticles in a nanofluidic slit as a function of the separation of the symmetrically charged confining surfaces. A dedicated setup called the nano-fluidic confinement apparatus (NCA) allows us to parallelize the two confining surfaces and to continuously approach them down to direct contact. Interferometric scattering (iSCAT) detection is used to measure the particle contrast with 2 ms temporal resolution. We obtain the confinement gap distance from the interference signal of the glass and the oxide-covered silicon wafer surface with nanometer …

The radiative heat transfer between gold nanoparticle layers is presented using the coupled dipole method. Gold nanoparticles are modelled as effective electric and magnetic dipoles interacting via electromagnetic fluctuations. The effect of higher-order multipoles is implemented in the expression of electric polarizability to calculate the interactions at short distances. Our findings show that the near-field radiation reduces as the radius of the nanoparticles is increased. Also, the magnetic dipole contribution to the heat exchange becomes more important for larger particles. When one layer…
Assessing and controlling magnetic interactions in magnetic nanostructures are critical to nanomagnetic and spintronic explorations, such as magnetic recording media, permanent magnets, magnetic memory and logic devices, etc. Here we demonstrate an extremely sensitive magnetic yoking effect and tunable interactions in FePt based hard/soft bilayers mediated by the soft layer. Below the exchange length, a thin soft layer strongly exchange couples to the perpendicular moments of the hard layer; above the exchange length, just a few nanometers thicker, the soft layer moments turn in-plane and act …
We investigate the spatial distribution of spin orientation in magnetic nanoparticles consisting of hard and soft magnetic layers. The nanoparticles are synthesized in a core / shell spherical morphology where the magnetically hard, high anisotropy layer is CoFe$_2$O$_4$ (CFO) while the lower anisotropy material is Fe$_3$O$_4$ (FO). The nanoparticles have a mean diameter of $\sim$9.2 - 9.6 nm and are synthesized as two variants: a conventional hard / soft core / shell structure with a CFO core / FO shell (CFO@FO) and the inverted structure FO core / CFO shell (FO@CFO). High resolution electron…
We theoretically discuss the Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida (RKKY) interaction between semiconductor quantum dots (QDs). When each QD having a local spin is coupled to the conduction electrons in semiconductors, an indirect exchange interaction, i.e., the RKKY interaction, is induced between two local spins. The RKKY interaction between QDs, which is mediated by the Fermi sea in semiconductors, is modulated by changing the Fermi energy, and the magnitude or even the sign of the exchange interaction can be tuned, which leads to a tunable magnetic transition in QD devices. We estimate the magnitu…
Mn2+ ion doping is used as an electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) probe to investigate the influence of low-coordination structural defects such as step edges at the surface of terraced (001) MgO nanoparticles on the electronic properties. Beside the well-known hyperfine sextet of Mn2+ ions in the cubic crystal field of MgO, an additional EPR feature with a striking non-monotonous temperature dependent shift of the g-factor is observed in terraced nanoparticles in the temperature range from 4K to room temperature. By linking the difference in the temperature dependence of the Mn2+ sextet int…
We propose an implementation of a singlet-only spin qubit in a GaAs-based triple quantum dot with a (1,4,1) charge occupation. In the central multi-electron dot, the interplay between Coulomb interaction and an out-of-plane magnetic field creates an energy spectrum with a tunable singlet-triplet splitting, which can be exploited to create a six-particle singlet-only qubit with a qubit splitting that can straightforwardly be tuned over tens of $μ$eV by adjusting the external magnetic field. We confirm the full exchange-based electric control of the qubit and demonstrate its superior coherence p…
A method for growing nanoparticles with different elemental compositions simply by changing pulsing parameters in a power supply is demonstrated. The technique is based on high power pulsed hollow cathode sputtering, and the difference in particle composition ranges from pure Fe and Ni, to fully alloyed FeNi particles. Several pulses, or bursts, from a hollow cathode are needed in order to grow a nanoparticle using high power pulses. With this in mind, we devised a setup with two hollow cathodes of different material, Fe and Ni, situated in the vicinity of each other. By using two power suppli…
The influence of a patterned substrate on obliquely deposited, exchange biased Co/CoO films was studied. It was found that substrates decorated with nanoparticle patterns provide the option to manipulate the orientation of the magnetic easy axis in obliquely deposited thin films. The complementary methods of SQUID magnetometry and polarized neutron reflectometry were used to disentangle the different contributions to the magnetic hysteresis of such complex magnetic systems.
Antiferromagnets (AFMs) with zero net magnetization are proposed as active elements in future spintronic devices. Depending on the critical thickness of the AFM thin films and the measurement temperature, bimetallic Mn-based alloys and transition metal oxide-based AFMs can host various coexisting ordered, disordered, and frustrated AFM phases. Such coexisting phases in the exchange coupled ferromagnetic (FM)/AFM-based heterostructures can result in unusual magnetic and magnetotransport phenomena. Here, we integrate chemically disordered AFM IrMn3 thin films with coexisting AFM phases into comp…
We modify and extend a recently proposed four-wave mixing scheme [Opt. Express 25 (19),23164 (2017)] for achieving near-field thermal upconversion and energy transfer, to demonstrate efficient thermal refrigeration at low intensities $\sim 10^{-9}$W/m$^2$ over a wide range of gap sizes (from tens to hundreds of nanometers) and operational temperatures (from tens to hundreds of Kelvins). We further exploit the scheme to achieve magnitude and directional tunability of near-field heat exchange between bodies held at different temperatures.
The theoretical analysis of the effect of uniaxial stress on the magnetization of the system of noninteracting nanoparticles is done by an example of heterophase particles of maghemite, epitaxially coated with cobalt ferrite. It is shown that stretching leads to a decrease in the coercive force $H_c$, and compression leads to its growth. The residual saturation magnetization $I_{rs}$ of nanoparticles does not change. With increasing of interfacial exchange interaction, coercive force varies nonmonotonically
In this work we report a study of the magnetic behavior of ferrimagnetic oxide CoFe2O4 and ferrimagnetic oxide/ferromagnetic metal CoFe2O4/CoFe2 nanocomposites. The latter compound is a good system to study hard ferrimagnet/soft ferromagnet exchange coupling. Two steps were used to synthesize the bimagnetic CoFe2O4/CoFe2 nanocomposites: (i) first preparation of CoFe2O4 nanoparticles using the a simple hydrothermal method and (ii) second reduction reaction of cobalt ferrite nanoparticles using activated charcoal in inert atmosphere and high temperature. The phase structures, particle sizes, mor…
We study the spin exchange between two electrons localized in separate quantum dots in graphene. The electronic states in the conduction band are coupled indirectly by tunneling to a common continuum of delocalized states in the valence band. As a model, we use a two-impurity Anderson Hamiltonian which we subsequently transform into an effective spin Hamiltonian by way of a two-stage Schrieffer-Wolff transformation. We then compare our result to that from a Coqblin-Schrieffer approach as well as to fourth order perturbation theory.
We investigate the combined effect of spin-orbit scattering and electron-electron interactions on the probability distribution of $g$-factors of metal nanoparticles. Using random matrix theory, we find that even a relatively small interaction strength %(ratio of exchange constant $J$ and mean level %spacing $\spacing$ $\simeq 0.3$) significantly increases $g$-factor fluctuations for not-too-strong spin-orbit scattering (ratio of spin-orbit rate and single-electron level spacing $1/τ_{\rm so} \spacing \lesssim 1$), and leads to the possibility to observe $g$-factors larger than two.
We show that higher-harmonics exchange scattering from a magnetic adatom on the surface of a three dimensional topological insulator leads to a magnetic anisotropy whose magnitude and sign may be tuned by adjusting the chemical potential of the helical surface band. As chemical potential moves from the Dirac point towards the surface band edge, the surface normal is found to change from magnetic easy, to hard axis. Hexagonal warping is shown to diminish the region with easy axis anisotropy, and to suppress the anisotropy altogether. This indirect contribution can be comparable in magnitude to …
We investigate the electronic band structure and the proximity exchange effect in bilayer graphene on a family of ferromagnetic multilayers Cr$_2$X$_2$Te$_6$, X=Ge, Si, and Sn, with first principles methods. In each case the intrinsic electric field of the heterostructure induces an orbital gap on the order of 10 meV in the graphene bilayer. The proximity exchange is strongly band dependent. For example, in the case of Cr$_2$Ge$_2$Te$_6$, the low-energy valence band of bilayer graphene has exchange splitting of 8 meV, while the low energy conduction band's splitting is 30 times less (0.3 meV).…
Magnetic thin films at ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) leak angular momentum, which may be absorbed by adjacent layers. This phenomenon, known as spin pumping, is manifested by an increase in the resonance linewidth ($ΔH$), and the closely related Gilbert damping. Another effect of this transfer of spin currents is a dynamical and long-range coupling that can drive two magnetic layers into a collective precession when their FMR frequencies coincide. A collective behavior is also found in magnetic trilayers with interlayer exchange coupling (IEC). In this study we investigate the interplay betwee…
We report the synthesis of cobalt nanoparticles with different shapes and sizes by rapid pyrolysis of cobalt carbonyl in the presence of various surfactants. The size and shape of the nanoparticles were influenced by reaction conditions, such as type of the surfactant, molar ratio of surfactant to precursor, reflux temperature and reaction time. The shapes that we have achieved include spherical, nearly spherical, disc and cube. The presence of linear amine yielded nanodiscs and they spontaneously self-assembled into long ribbons. The effect of shape anisotropy on magnetic nanoparticles has be…
Topological phase in magnetic materials yields a quantized contribution to the Hall effect known as the topological Hall effect, which is often caused by skyrmions, with each skyrmion creating a magnetic flux quantum h/e. The control and understanding of topological properties in nanostructured materials is the subject of immense interest for both fundamental science and technological applications, especially in spintronics. In this work, the electron-transport properties and spin structure of exchange-coupled cobalt nanoparticles with an average particle size of 13.7 nm are studied experiment…
We develop a quantum theory of plasmon polaritons in chains of metallic nanoparticles, describing both near- and far-field interparticle distances, by including plasmon-photon Umklapp processes. Taking into account the retardation effects of the long-range dipole-dipole interaction between the nanoparticles, which are induced by the coupling of the plasmonic degrees of freedom to the photonic continuum, we reveal the polaritonic nature of the normal modes of the system. We compute the dispersion relation and radiative linewidth, as well as the group velocities of the eigenmodes, and compare ou…
Hybrid molecular-plasmonic nanostructures have demonstrated their potential for surface enhanced spectroscopies, sensing or quantum control at the nanoscale. In this work, we investigate the strong coupling regime and explicitly describe the hybridization between the localized plasmons of a metal nanoparticle and the excited state of a quantum emitter, offering a simple and precise understanding of the energy exchange in full analogy with cavity quantum electrodynamics treatment and dressed atom picture. Both near field emission and far field radiation are discussed, revealing the richness of …
