Millimeter wave (mmWave) MIMO will likely use hybrid analog and digital precoding, which uses a small number of RF chains to avoid energy consumption associated with mixed signal components like analog-to-digital components not to mention baseband processing complexity. However, most hybrid precoding techniques consider a fully-connected architecture requiring a large number of phase shifters, which is also energyintensive. In this paper, we focus on the more energy-efficient hybrid precoding with sub-connected architecture, and propose a successive interference cancelation (SIC)-based hybrid precoding with near-optimal performance and low complexity. Inspired by the idea of SIC for multi-user signal detection, we first propose to decompose the total achievable rate optimization problem with non-convex constraints into a series of simple sub-rate optimization problems, each of which only considers one sub-antenna array. Then, we prove that maximizing the achievable sub-rate of each sub-antenna array is equivalent to simply seeking a precoding vector sufficiently close (in terms of Euclidean distance) to the unconstrained optimal solution. Finally, we propose a low-complexity algorithm to realize SICbased hybrid precoding, which can avoid the need for the singular value decomposition (SVD) and matrix inversion. Complexity evaluation shows that the complexity of SIC-based hybrid precoding is only about 10% as complex as that of the recently proposed spatially sparse precoding in typical mmWave MIMO systems. Simulation results verify the near-optimal performance of SIC-based hybrid precoding.

We propose a novel joint precoder design strategy, which exploits weighted minimum mean-square error (WMMSE) using its equivalency to sum-rate maximization. We obtain closed form expressions of transmit and relay precoders, and propose to compute them through al…
This paper focuses on the design of low complexity hybrid analog/digital precoding and diversity combining in millimeter wave (mmWave) Internet of things (IoT) systems. Firstly, by exploiting the sparseness property of the mmWave in the angular domain, we propose a spatial lobes division (SLD) to group the total paths of the mmWave channel into several spatial lobes, where the paths in each spatial lobe form a low-rank sub-channel. Secondly, based on the SLD operation, we propose a low complexity hybrid precoding scheme, named HYP-SLD. Specifically, for each low-rank sub-channel, we formulate …
Millimeter wave (mmWave) massive MIMO can achieve orders of magnitude increase in spectral and energy efficiency, and it usually exploits the hybrid analog and digital precoding to overcome the serious signal attenuation induced by mmWave frequencies. However, most of hybrid precoding schemes focus on the full-array structure, which involves a high complexity. In this paper, we propose a near-optimal iterative hybrid precoding scheme based on the more realistic subarray structure with low complexity. We first decompose the complicated capacity optimization problem into a series of ones easier …
Generalized spatial modulation (GenSM) aided millimeter wave (mmWave) multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) has recently received substantial academic attention. However, due to the insufficient exploitation of the transmitter's knowledge of the channel state information (CSI), the achievable rates of state-of-the-art GenSM-aided mmWave MIMO systems are far from being optimal. Against this background, a novel analog precoding scheme is proposed in this paper to improve the spectral efficiency (SE) of conventional GenSM-aided mmWave MIMOs. More specifically, we firstly manage to lower-bound the…

Hence, in this article, we propose a photonic hybrid precoding model for mmwave radio-over-fiber systems that overcomes hardware constraints on radio frequency precoding. With help of silicon photonic integrated circuits (Si-PICs), the photonic precoding strategy combats the large losses of mmwave and mitigates inter-user interference. Simulation results show that the proposed model can offer significant coding gains over conventional precoding sys…
To perform multi-user multiple-input and multiple-output transmission in millimeter-wave(mmWave) cellular systems, the high-dimensional channels need to be estimated for designing the multi-user precoder. Conventional grid-based compressed sensing (CS) methods for mmWave channel estimation suffer from the basis mismatch problem, which prevents accurate channel reconstruction and degrades the precoding performance. This paper formulates mmWave channel estimation as an Atomic Norm Minimization (ANM) problem. In contrast to grid-based CS methods which use discrete dictionaries, ANM uses a continu…
Hybrid precoding is a cost-effective approach to support directional transmissions for millimeter wave (mmWave) communications. While existing works on hybrid precoding mainly focus on single-user single-carrier transmission, in practice multicarrier transmission is needed to combat the much increased bandwidth, and multiuser MIMO can provide additional spatial multiplexing gains. In this paper, we propose a new hybrid precoding structure for multiuser OFDM mmWave systems, which greatly simplifies the hybrid precoder design and is able to approach the performance of the fully digital precoder.…
Millimeter wave (mmWave) signals experience orders-of-magnitude more pathloss than the microwave signals currently used in most wireless applications. MmWave systems must therefore leverage large antenna arrays, made possible by the decrease in wavelength, to combat pathloss with beamforming gain. Beamforming with multiple data streams, known as precoding, can be used to further improve mmWave spectral efficiency. Both beamforming and precoding are done digitally at baseband in traditional multi-antenna systems. The high cost and power consumption of mixed-signal devices in mmWave systems, how…
Hybrid analog/digital precoding offers a compromise between hardware complexity and system performance in millimeter wave (mmWave) systems. This type of precoding allows mmWave systems to leverage large antenna array gains that are necessary for sufficient link margin, while permitting low cost and power consumption hardware. Most prior work has focused on hybrid precoding for narrowband mmWave systems, with perfect or estimated channel knowledge at the transmitter. MmWave systems, however, will likely operate on wideband channels with frequency selectivity. Therefore, this paper considers wid…
Hybrid analog/digital precoding architectures can address the trade-off between achievable spectral efficiency and power consumption in large-scale MIMO systems. This makes it a promising candidate for millimeter wave systems, which require deploying large antenna arrays at both the transmitter and receiver to guarantee sufficient received signal power. Most prior work on hybrid precoding focused on narrowband channels and assumed fully-connected hybrid architectures. MmWave systems, though, are expected to be wideband with frequency selectivity. In this paper, a closed-form solution for fully…
Millimeter-wave (mmWave) communication is considered as an indispensable technique for the next-generation backhaul/fronthaul network thanks to its large transmission bandwidth. Especially for heterogeneous network (HetNet), the mmWave full-dimension (FD)-MIMO is exploited to establish the backhaul/fronthaul link between phantom-cell base stations (BSs) and macro-cell BSs, where an efficient precoding is prerequisite. Against this background, this paper proposes a principle component analysis (PCA)-based hybrid precoding for wideband mmWave MIMO backhaul/fronthaul channels. We first propose an…
Hybrid precoding design can be challenging for broadband millimeter-wave (mmWave) massive MIMO due to the frequency-flat analog precoder in radio frequency (RF). Prior broadband hybrid precoding work usually focuses on fully-connected array (FCA), while seldom considers the energy-efficient partially-connected subarray (PCS) including the fixed subarray (FS) and dynamic subarray (DS). Against this background, this paper proposes a machine learning based broadband hybrid precoding for mmWave massive MIMO with DS. The application of hybrid precoding in millimeter wave (mmWave) multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems has been proved effective for reducing the number of radio frequency (RF) chains. However, the maximum number of independent data streams is conventionally restricted by the number of RF chains, which leads to limiting the spatial multiplexing gain. To further improve the achievable spectral efficiency (SE), in this paper we propose a novel generalized spatial modulation (GenSM) aided mmWave MIMO system to convey an extra data stream via the index of the active antennas group, while no…
Power consumption of multi-user (MU) precoding is a major concern in all-digital massive MU multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) base-stations with hundreds of antenna elements operating at millimeter-wave (mmWave) frequencies. We propose to replace part of the linear Wiener filter (WF) precoding matrix by a finite-alphabet WF precoding (FAWP) matrix, which enables the use of low-precision hardware that consumes low power and area. To minimize the performance loss of our approach, we present methods that efficiently compute FAWP matrices that best mimic the WF precoder. Our results show that …
Next generation wireless communications rely on multiple input multiple output (MIMO) techniques to achieve high data rates. Feedback of channel information can be used in MIMO precoding to fully activate the strongest channel modes and improve MIMO performance. Unfortunately, the bandwidth of the control channel via which the feedback is conveyed is severely limited. An important issue is how to improve the MIMO precoding performance with minimal feedback. In this letter, we present a method that uses a rotating codebook technique to effectively improve the precoding performance without the n…
We propose a unitary precoding scheme, namely polar-precoding, to improve the performance of polar-coded MIMO systems. In contrast to the traditional design of MIMO precoding criteria, the proposed polar-precoding scheme relies on the \emph{polarization criterion}. In particular, the precoding matrix design comprises two steps. After selecting a basic matrix for maximizing the capacity in the first step, we design a unitary matrix for maximizing the polarization effect among the data streams without degrading the capacity. Our simulation results show that the proposed polar-precoding scheme ou…
Massive multi-user multiple-input multiple-output (MU-MIMO) wireless systems operating at millimeter-wave (mmWave) frequencies enable simultaneous wideband data transmission to a large number of users. In order to reduce the complexity of MU precoding in all-digital basestation architectures, we propose a two-stage precoding architecture that first performs precoding using a sparse matrix in the beamspace domain, followed by an inverse fast Fourier transform that converts the result to the antenna domain. The sparse precoding matrix requires a small number of multipliers and enables regular ha…
Block diagonalization (BD) based precoding techniques are well-known linear transmit strategies for multiuser MIMO (MU-MIMO) systems. By employing BD-type precoding algorithms at the transmit side, the MU-MIMO broadcast channel is decomposed into multiple independent parallel single user MIMO (SU-MIMO) channels and achieves the maximum diversity order at high data rates. The main computational complexity of BD-type precoding algorithms comes from two singular value decomposition (SVD) operations, which depend on the number of users and the dimensions of each user's channel matrix. In this work…
Hybrid precoding is a promising technique for mmWave massive MIMO systems, as it can considerably reduce the number of required radio-frequency (RF) chains without obvious performance loss. However, most of the existing hybrid precoding schemes require a complicated phase shifter network, which still involves high energy consumption. In this paper, we propose an energy-efficient hybrid precoding architecture, where the analog part is realized by a small number of switches and inverters instead of a large number of high-resolution phase shifters. Our analysis proves that the performance gap bet…
Due to the high cost and low energy efficiency of the dedicated radio frequency (RF) chains, the number of RF chains in a millimeter wave (mmWave) multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) system is usually limited from a practical point of view. In this case, the maximum number of independent data streams is also restricted by the number of RF chains, which consequently leads to limiting the potentially attainable spatial multiplexing gain. In order to address this issue, in this paper, a novel generalized spatial modulation (GenSM) aided mmWave MIMO system is proposed, which enables the transmis…
In this paper, downlink (DL) precoding and power allocation strategies are identified for a time-division-duplex (TDD) multi-cell multi-user massive Full-Dimension MIMO (FD-MIMO) network. Utilizing channel reciprocity, DL channel state information (CSI) feedback is eliminated and the DL multi-user MIMO precoding is linked to the uplink (UL) direction of arrival (DoA) estimation through estimation of signal parameters via rotational invariance technique (ESPRIT). Assuming non-orthogonal/non-ideal spreading sequences of the UL pilots, the performance of the UL DoA estimation is analytically char…
In this paper, we solve the sum mean-squared error (MSE)-optimal 1-bit quantized precoding problem exactly for small-to-moderate sized multiuser multiple-input multiple-output (MU-MIMO) systems via branch and bound. To this end, we reformulate the original NP-hard precoding problem as a tree search and deploy a number of strategies that improve the pruning efficiency without sacrificing optimality. We evaluate the error-rate performance and the complexity of the resulting 1-bit branch-and-bound (BB-1) precoder, and compare its efficacy to that of existing, suboptimal algorithms for 1-bit preco…
Massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems achieve high sum spectral efficiency by offering an order of magnitude increase in multiplexing gains. In time division duplexing systems, however, the reuse of uplink training pilots among cells results in additional channel estimation error, which causes downlink inter-cell interference, even when large numbers of antennas are employed. Handling this interference with conventional network MIMO techniques is challenging due to the large channel dimensionality. Further, the implementation of large antenna precoding/combining matrices is ass…

Hybrid precoding involves a combination of analog and digital processing that is inspired by the power consumption of complete radio frequency and mixed…
We consider downlink precoding in a frequency-selective multi-user Massive MIMO system with highly efficient but non-linear power amplifiers at the base station (BS). A low-complexity precoding algorithm is proposed, which generates constant-envelope (CE) signals at each BS antenna. To achieve a desired per-user information rate, the extra total transmit power required under the per-antenna CE constraint when compared to the commonly used less stringent total average transmit power constraint, is small.
Millimeter wave (mmWave) cellular systems will enable gigabit-per-second data rates thanks to the large bandwidth available at mmWave frequencies. To realize sufficient link margin, mmWave systems will employ directional beamforming with large antenna arrays at both the transmitter and receiver. Due to the high cost and power consumption of gigasample mixed-signal devices, mmWave precoding will likely be divided among the analog and digital domains. The large number of antennas and the presence of analog beamforming requires the development of mmWave-specific channel estimation and precoding a…
Signal-to-leakage-and-noise ratio (SLNR) is a promising criterion for linear precoder design in multi-user (MU) multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems. It decouples the precoder design problem and makes closed-form solution available. In this letter, we present a new linear precoding scheme by slightly relaxing the SLNR maximization for MU-MIMO systems with multiple data streams per user. The precoding matrices are obtained by a general form of simultaneous diagonalization of two Hermitian matrices. The new scheme reduces the gap between the per-stream effective channel gains, an inhere…
Massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) is envisioned to offer considerable capacity improvement, but at the cost of high complexity of the hardware. The proposed hybrid precoding scheme, named phased-ZF (PZF), essentially applies phase-only control at the RF domain and then performs a low-dimensional baseband ZF pr…
Channel estimation is challenging for millimeter-wave (mmWave) massive MIMO with hybrid precoding, since the number of radio frequency (RF) chains is much smaller than that of antennas. Conventional compressive sensing based channel estimation schemes suffer from severe resolution loss due to the channel angle quantization. To improve the channel estimation accuracy, we propose an iterative reweight (IR)-based super-resolution channel estimation scheme in this paper. By optimizing an objective function through the gradient descent method, the proposed scheme can iteratively move the estimated …
In this paper, we consider a MIMO networked control system (NCS) in which a sensor amplifies and forwards the observed MIMO plant state to a remote controller via a MIMO fading channel. Among the considered precoders, we range from different Grid of Beams (GoB) optimization approaches to linear precoders (e.g., matched filtering and zero forcing). This performance evaluation includes imperfect channel estimation, and is carried out over two realistic mmWave 5G propagation channels, which are simulated following either the measurement campaign d…
Hybrid precoding can significantly reduce the number of required radio frequency (RF) chains and relieve the huge energy consumption in mmWave massive MIMO systems, thus attracting much interests from academic and industry. However, most existing hybrid precoding schemes are based on singular value decomposition (SVD). Due to the very different sub-channel signal-to-noise ratios (SNRs) after SVD, complicated bit allocations is usually required to match the sub-channel SNRs. To solve this problem, we propose a geometric mean decomposition (GMD)-based hybrid precoding scheme to avoid the complic…
Massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) promises improved spectral efficiency, coverage, and range, compared to conventional (small-scale) MIMO wireless systems. Unfortunately, these benefits come at the cost of significantly increased computational complexity, especially for systems with realistic antenna configurations. To reduce the complexity of data detection (in the uplink) and precoding (in the downlink) in massive MIMO systems, we propose to use conjugate gradient (CG) methods. While precoding using CG is rather straightforward, soft-output minimum mean-square error (MMSE) detect…
Joint user selection and precoding in multiuser MIMO settings can be interpreted as group sparse recovery in linear models. In this problem, a signal with group sparsity is to be reconstructed from an underdetermined system of equations. This paper utilizes this equivalent interpretation and develops a computationally tractable algorithm based on the method of group LASSO. Compared to the state of the art, the proposed scheme shows performance enhancements in two different respects: higher achievable sum-rate and lower interference at the non-selected user terminals.
The cell-free MIMO concept relying on hybrid precoding constitutes an innovative technique capable of dramatically increasing the network capacity of millimeter-wave (mmWave) communication systems. The fundamental limitation of massive MIMO technology is pilot contamination effect. This effect occurs during uplink training when terminals use the same orthogonal signals. In this paper, a pilot reuse factor with large scale fading precoding is proposed to mitigate the pilot contamination effect. The pilot reuse factor is designed to assign unique orthogonal signals to the adjacent cells. These unique orthogonal signals are reused only within the cell and hence, intra-pilot contamination is the only concern. Large scale fading precoding is then used to mitigate the intra-pilot contamination…
This paper studies the sum rate performance of a low complexity quantized CSI-based Tomlinson-Harashima (TH) precoding scheme for downlink multiuser MIMO tansmission, employing greedy user selection. The asymptotic distribution of the output signal to interference plus noise ratio of each selected user and the asymptotic sum rate as the number of users K grows large are derived by using extreme value theory. For fixed finite signal to noise ratios and a finite number of transmit antennas $n_T$, we prove that as K grows large, the proposed approach can achieve the optimal sum rate scaling of th…
In general, the zero-forcing (ZF) precoding suffers from a severe receive signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) degradation in the high interference regime. However, recent evidences from realistic measurements demonstrated that millimeter wave (mmWave) systems are mainly noise-limited as high gain antennas behave as spatial filters to the interference signal. This makes ZF precoding equally attractive as that of other linear precoding counterparts. Considering ZF precoding, this paper aims to derive a lower bound on the sum-rate achieved by a decremental beam selection (BS) algorithm in a beamspace MIM…
