Positron Emission Tomography (PET) using time-of-flight information, which can greatly improve the quality of the reconstructed image, has recently become an exciting topic. In this work, 3.2mm*3.2mm*25mm finger-like LYSO crystals were used to make a 5*5 array, coupled to the Hamamatsu H8500 photomultiplier tube (PMT) as a detector. A fast leading-edge discriminator was designed for the LYSO-H8500 detector. Average coincidence time resolution FWHM of 330 ps was obtained for the LYSO detector with a reference BaF2 detector, whose time resolution for 511 keV γ-rays was FWHM 150 ps. Time resolution FWHM of 294 ps was calculated for the LYSO detector, and coincidence time resolution of FHWM 415 ps can be expected for two identical LYSO detectors.
The aim of this study is to design and evaluate a simple free running Analog-Digital Converter (ADC) based on the Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) device to accomplish the energy and position readout of the silicon photomultiplier (SiPM) array for application as PET scanners. This simple FPGA-ADC based on a carry chain Time-Digital Converter (TDC) implemented on a Kintex-7 FPGA consists of only one off-chip resistor so it has greater advantages in improving system integration and reducing cost than commercial chips. In this paper, a FPGA-ADC based front-end electronics prototype is present…
We present results of simulations on the influence of photon propagation and the Cherenkov effect on the time resolution of LSO:Ce scintillators. The influence of the scintillator length on the coincidence time resolution is shown. Furthermore, the impact of the depth of interaction on the time resolution, the light output and the arrival time distribution at the photon detector is simulated and it is shown how these information can be used for time walk correction.
The complexity of the hardware and the amount of data collected during the PET imaging process require application of modern methods of efficient data organization and processing. In this article we will discuss the data structures and the flow of collected data from the novel TOF-PET medical scanner which is being developed at the Jagiellonian University. The developed data format reflects: registration process of the gamma quanta emitted from positron-electron annihilation, Front-End Electronic (FEE) structure and required input information for the image reconstruction. In addition, the syst…
The aim of this work is to show the potential capabilities of monolithic crystals coupled to large SiPM arrays, to be considered as detector blocks for PET scanners enabling Time Of Flight (TOF) capabilities. Monolithic blocks allow one to decode the 3D photon impact position. This approach, along with TOF information, can be of high interest in clinical Positron emission tomography (PET) applications where a typical ring configuration is used. In this manuscript, we evaluate an ASIC- based readout for digitizing all signals coming from analog photosensors. Validation results with one-to-one c…
With the newly gained interest in the time of flight method for positron emission tomography (TOF-PET), many options for pushing the time resolution to its borders have been investigated. As one of these options the exploitation of the Cherenkov effect has been proposed, since it allows to bypass the scintillation process and therefore provides almost instantaneous response to incident 511keV annihilation photons. Our simulation studies on the yield of Cherenkov photons, their arrival rate at the photon detector and their angular distribution reveal a significant influence by Cherenkov photons…
Aiming to measure the difference in arrival times of two coincident gamma-photons with an accuracy in the order of 200 ps, time-of-flight positron emission tomography systems commonly employ silicon photomultipliers (SiPMs) and high-resolution digitization electronics, application specific integrated circuits (ASICs). This work evaluates the performance of the TOFPET2 ASIC, released by PETsys Electronics S.A. in 2017, dependent on its configuration parameters in multi-channel coincidence measurements. SiPM arrays fabricated by different vendors (KETEK, SensL, Hamamatsu, Broadcom) were tested i…
Novel TOF-PET scanner solutions demand, apart from the state of the art detectors, software for fast processing of the gathered data, monitoring of the whole scanner and reconstruction of the PET image. In this article we present an analysis framework for the novel STRIP-PET scanner developed by the J-PET collaboration in the Institute of Physics of the Jagiellonian University. This software is based on the ROOT package used in many particle physics experiments.
Purpose: Explaining why 90Y TOF-PET based equivalent uniform dose (EUD) using standard FDG reconstruction parameters has been shown to predict response. Methods: The hot rods insert of a Jaszczak deluxe phantom was partially filled with a 2.65 GBq 90Y - 300ml DTPA water solution resulting in a 100 Gy mean absorbed dose in the 6 sectors. A two bed 20min/position acquisition was performed on a 550ps- and on a 320ps- TOF-PET/CT and reconstructed with standard FDG reconstruction parameters, without and with additional filtering. The whole procedure was repeated on both PET after adding a 300ml of …
To measure light emission pattern in scintillator, higher sensitivity and faster response are required to photo detector. Such as single photon avalanche diode (SPAD), conventional pixelated photo detector is operated at Geiger avalanche multiplication. However higher gain of SPAD seems very attractive, photon detection efficiency per unit area is low. This weak point is mainly caused by Geiger avalanche mechanism. To overcome these difficulties, we designed Pixelated Linear Avalanche Integration Detector using Silicon on Insulator technology (SOI-Plaid). To avoid dark count noise and dead tim…
Nowadays, in Positron Emission Tomography (PET) systems, a Time of Flight information is used to improve the image reconstruction process. In Time of Flight PET (TOF-PET), fast detectors are able to measure the difference in the arrival time of the two gamma rays, with the precision enabling to shorten significantly a range along the line-of-response (LOR) where the annihilation occurred. In the new concept, called J-PET scanner, gamma rays are detected in plastic scintillators. In a single strip of J-PET system, time values are obtained by probing signals in the amplitude domain. Owing to Com…
All of the present methods for calibration and monitoring of TOF-PET scanner detectors utilize radioactive isotopes such as e.g. $^{22}$Na or $^{68}$Ge, which are placed or rotate inside the scanner. In this article we describe a novel method based on the cosmic rays application to the PET calibration and monitoring methods. The concept allows to overcome many of the drawbacks of the present methods and it is well suited for newly developed TOF-PET scanners with a large longitudinal field of view. The method enables also monitoring of the quality of the scintillator materials and in general al…
Lutetium (Lu) based scintillators such as LSO and LYSO, are widely used in modern PET detectors due to their high stopping power for 511 keV gamma rays, high light yield and short decay time. However, 2.6% of naturally occurring Lu is 176Lu, a long-lived radioactive element including a beta decay and three major simultaneous gamma decays. This phenomenon introduces random events to PET systems that affects the system performance. On the other hand, the advantages of intrinsic radiation of 176Lu (IRL) continues to be exploited. In this paper, research literatures about IRL in PET detectors are …

Monte Carlo simulation plays an important role in the study of time of flight (TOF) positron emission tomography (PET) prototype. As it can incorporate accurate physical modeling of scintillation detection process, from scintillation light generation, the transport of scintillation photos through the crystal(s), to the conversion of these photons into electronic signals. The Geant4 based simulation software GATE can provide a user-friendly simulation platform containing the properties needed. In this work, we developed a dedicated module in GATE simulation tool. Using this module, we simulated…
We briefly present a design of a new PET scanner based on strips of polymer scintillators arranged in a barrel constituting a large acceptance detector. The solution proposed is based on the superior timing properties of the polymer scintillators. The position and time of the reaction of the gamma quanta in the detector material will be determined based on the time of arrival of light signals to the edges of the scintillator strips.
Aim: Investigate whether a time walk assessment derived from crystal light sharing and multi-photon time stamps can improved the TOF resolution. Method: Monte Carlo simulations were performed for SiPM (FBK-NUV-HD) coupled to conventional 4x4 mm2 pixelated LSO (0.2%Ca:Ce ) and also coupled to 8x4 mm2 pixelated LSO in which a triangular optical window allows light sharing between the two 4x4 mm2 sub-pixels depending on the DOI. A time walk estimation was modelled as a DOI dependent weighted sum of the time differences within the photons detection sequence. The DOI dependent weights were optimize…
We perform a parametric study of the newly developed time-of-flight (TOF) image reconstruction algorithm, proposed for the real-time imaging in total-body Jagiellonian PET (J-PET) scanners. The asymmetric 3D filtering kernel is applied at each most likely position of electron-positron annihilation, estimated from the emissions of back-to-back $γ$-photons. The optimisation of its parameters is studied using Monte Carlo simulations of a 1-mm spherical source, NEMA IEC and XCAT phantoms inside the ideal J-PET scanner. The combination of high-pass filters which included the TOF filtered back-proje…
PETALO (a Positron Emission Tof Apparatus based on Liquid xenOn) is a new approach for Positron Emission Tomography scanners, based on liquid xenon. The PETALO detector aims at capturing the light produced by the scintillation in LXe taking advantage of its uniform response and continuity. This strategy will lead to a geometrical distortion free behavior compared to other PET detectors. To this end, the sensors chosen for the light readout are SiPMs, which provide large area, high gain and very low noise. In order to take advantage of the unique PETALO detector characteristics a read-out archi…
In this contribution we present a new concept of the large acceptance detector systems based on organic scintillators which may allow for simultaneous diagnostic of large fraction of the human body. Novelty of the concept lies in employing large blocks of polymer scintillators instead of crystals as detectors of annihilation quanta, and in using predominantly the timing of signals instead of their amplitudes.

Pixelated PET systems produce higher count rates as they integrate several detecting channels per detector module. An increased data flow from the detectors posses higher needs on the bandwidth requirements. We aim to optimize the bandwidth usage efficiency by filtering on the fly the detected events with non valid energies. PET systems with a SiPM-ASIC readout scheme are being extensively used to get enhanced images on Time-Of-Flight PET scanners. These kind of digital readout systems are specially interesting for the application of on-line processing techniques given the ease of access to ea…
Time-Of-Flight (TOF) is a noble technique that is used in Positron Emission Tomography (PET) imaging worldwide. The scintillator based imaging system that is being used around the world for TOF-PET is very expensive. Multi-gap Resistive Plate Chambers (MRPCs) are gaseous detectors which are easy to fabricate, inexpensive and have excellent position and timing resolution. They can be used as a suitable alternative to highly expensive scintillators. For the sole purpose of TOF-PET, a pair of 18 cm $\times$ 18 cm, 5 gap, glass-based MRPC modules have been fabricated. Our main aim was to determine…
For a first characterization, we used the two KETEK-PM3325-WB SiPMs each equipped with a 3x3x5 mm${}^3$ LYSO scintillation crystal provided with the PETsys TOFPET2 ASIC Evaluation Kit. We changed the lower of two discriminator thresholds (D_T1) in the timing branch from vth_t1 = 5 - 30. The overvoltage was varied in a range of 1.25 V - 7.25 V. The ambient temperature was kept at 16°C. For all measurements, we performed an energy calibration including a correction for saturation. We evaluated the energy resolution, the coincidence resolving time (CRT) and the coincidence rate. At an overvoltage…
A novel method of hit time and hit position reconstruction in scintillator detectors is described. The method is based on comparison of detector signals with results stored in a library of synchronized model signals registered for a set of well-defined positions of scintillation points. The hit position is reconstructed as the one corresponding to the signal from the library which is most similar to the measurement signal. The time of the interaction is determined as a relative time between the measured signal and the most similar one in the library. A degree of similarity of measured and mode…
We propose PET scanners using low atomic number media that undergo a persistent local change of state along the paths of the Compton recoil electrons. Measurement of the individual scattering locations and angles, deposited energies, and recoil electron directions allows using the kinematical constraints of the 2-body Compton scattering process to perform a statistical time-ordering of the scatterings, with a high probability of precisely identifying where the gamma first interacted in the detector. In these cases the Line-of-Response is measured with high resolution, determined by the underly…
Current clinical PET systems utilize detectors where the scintillator typically contains single elements of 3 - 6 mm width and about 20 mm height. While providing good TOF performance, this design limits the spatial resolution and causes radial astigmatism as the DOI remains unknown. We propose an alternative, aiming to combine the advantages of current detectors with the DOI capabilities shown for monolithic concepts, based on semi-monolithic scintillators (slabs). An array of 8 monolithic LYSO slabs of dimensions 3.9 x 32 x 19 mm3 was read out by a 64-channel photosensor containing digital S…

We are exploring a scintillator-based detector with potential of high sensitivity, DOI capability and timing resolution in a single-side readout configuration. Our concept combines: 1) A design with 2+ crystal arrays stacked with relative offset, with inherent DOI information but good timing performance has not been shown with conventional light sharing readout. 2) Single crystal array with one-to-one coupling to the photodetector (PD) array, with good timing performance, but no DOI. We believe the combination, where the first layer of a staggered design is coupled one-to-one to a PD array may…
The Jagiellonian-PET (J-PET) collaboration is developing a prototype TOF-PET detector based on long polymer scintillators. This novel approach exploits the excellent time properties of the plastic scintillators, which permit very precise time measurements. The very fast, FPGA-based front-end electronics and the data acquisition system, as well as, low- and high-level reconstruction algorithms were specially developed to be used with the J-PET scanner. The TOF-PET data processing and reconstruction are time and resource demanding operations, especially in case of a large acceptance detector, wh…
Presice measurements of the photons conversion points in the scintillators are required to achieve a high spatial resolution of the PET system. I have developed a new method of reconstruction of the depth-of-interaction information for PET detectors with dual-side readout. The depth-of-interaction and energy resolutions from Monte-Carlo simulations are presented in this paper. The new method allows to reach depth-of-interaction resolution that is about 0.4~mm ($σ$) [or about 1.0~mm (FWHM)] for 10-mm long LYSO scintillator. If the precise measurement of the primary photon energy is not a high p…
Recent tests of a single module of the Jagiellonian Positron Emission Tomography system (J-PET) consisting of 30 cm long plastic scintillator strips have proven its applicability for the detection of annihilation quanta (0.511 MeV) with a coincidence resolving time (CRT) of 0.266 ns. The achieved resolution is almost by a factor of two better with respect to the current TOF-PET detectors and it can still be improved since, as it is shown in this article, the intrinsic limit of time resolution for the determination of time of the interaction of 0.511 MeV gamma quanta in plastic scintillators is…
Time over dynamic threshold (TODT) method, proposed in our previous work, has been successfully used for nuclear pulse charge measurement in PET detectors. It has advantages of strict linearity, large dynamic range, and better energy resolution, but requires a relatively complex circuit to generate specific dynamic threshold. In this paper, we propose to replace the dynamic threshold by a simpler linearly increasing threshold (called as TOLT method) with the aim to simplify the threshold generation circuit meanwhile maintaining its high energy resolution. Mathematical analysis on this replacem…
We report on the measurements performed using a 22Na source on a detector element for an MRI-compatible TOF-PET endorectal prostate probe, with Depth-Of-Interaction sensitivity. It is made from a LYSO scintillator crystal, wrapped with Lumirror, readout at both ends by means of Silicon Photomultipliers. With a detailed description of the data analysis procedure we show that our results point to a 400 ps coincidence resolving time and, at the same time, to a Depth-Of-Interaction resolution of 1 mm. These appealing features, along with the tiny 1.5 mm x 1.5 mm x 10 mm crystal size, are quite pro…
Small animal Positron Emission Tomography (PET) is dedicated to small animal imaging, which requires high position and energy precision, as well as good flexibility and efficiency of the electronics. We implement 32-channel signal processing in a single Xilinx Artix-7 Field-Programmable Gate Array (FPGA). The logic is designed to support four online modes which are regular data processing mode, flood map construction …
PETALO (Positron Emission TOF Apparatus based on Liquid xenOn) exploits the unique characteristics of liquid xenon as a scintillator for use in a PET detector. Here initial simulation studies are detailed which highlight the potential of such a detector and outline the steps taken in the reconstruction of 511 keV gamma rays and in the full PET image reconstruction. In particular, a neural network-based approach is conceived in order to tag gamma rays that are poorly reconstructed due to Compton scattering. It is found that though a significant fraction of events undergo Compton scattering, not…
In this paper we prove that the choice of a suitable treatment of the scintillator surfaces, along with suitable photodetectors electronics and specific algorithms for raw data analysis, allow to achieve an optimal tradeoff between energy, time and DOI resolution, thus strongly supporting the feasibility of a prostate TOF- PET probe, MRI compatible, with the required features and performance. In numbers this means a detector element of 1.5mm x 1.5mm x 10mm, achieving at the same time energy resolution around 11.5%, time-of- flight resolution around 150 ps and DOI resolution even below 1 mm. We…
In this paper we use detailed Monte Carlo simulations to demonstrate that liquid xenon (LXe) can be used to build a Cherenkov-based TOF-PET, with an intrinsic coincidence resolving time (CRT) in the vicinity of 10 ps. This extraordinary performance is due to three facts: a) the abundant emission of Cherenkov photons by liquid xenon; b) the fact that LXe is transparent to Cherenkov light; and c) the fact that the fastest photons in LXe have wavelengths higher than 300 nm, therefore making it possible to separate the detection of scintillation and Cherenkov light. The CRT in a Cherenkov LXe TOF-…
The effect of the intrinsic lutetium radioactivity on the detection performances of a LYSO based in-beam PET prototype used for quality control of hadron therapy treatments is studied. This radioactivity leads to a background that degrades the measurement of the $β$ + signal. In particular, it prevents the measurement of faint signals originating from low activity $β$ + sources. This paper presents a method to estimate the minimum $β$ + activity that can be measured for any acquisition time taking into account the non-extensible dead time of the detector. This method is illustrated with experi…
In recent years, SiPM photoelectric devices have drawn much attention in the domain of time-of-flight-based positron emission tomography (TOF-PET). Using them to construct PET detectors with excellent coincidence time resolution (CTR) is always one of research focus. In this paper, a SiPM readout pre-amplifier based on common-base current amplifier structure followed by a Pole-Zero (PZ) compensation network is constructed, and the main factors that affect the timing performance of the PET detector are investigated. By experimental measurement, we found that the CTR is heavily related to the ba…
We are investigating a prototype virtual pinhole positron emission tomography (VP-PET) system for small animal imaging applications. The PET detector modules were made up of 1.3 mm lutetium-yttrium oxyorthosilicate (LYSO) arrays, and the insert detectors consists of 0.6 mm pixelated Cadmium Zinc Telluride (CdZnTe). To validate the imaging experiment, we conducted a Monte Carlo simulation for the VP-PET system in Geant4 Application for Emission Tomography (GATE). For a point source of Na-22 with 0.5 mm diameter, the filtered back-projection (FBP) algorithm reconstructed PET image shows a resolu…
The measurement of the time of flight of the two 511 keV gammas recorded in coincidence in a PET scanner provides an effective way of reducing the random background and therefore increases the scanner sensitivity, provided that the coincidence resolving time (CRT) of the gammas is sufficiently good. The best commercial PET-TOF system today (based in LYSO crystals and digital SiPMs), is the VEREOS of Philips, boasting a CRT of 316 ps (FWHM). In this paper we present a Monte Carlo investigation of the CRT performance of a PET scanner exploiting the scintillating properties of liquid xenon. We fi…
A PET scanner based on silicon photomultipliers (SiPMs) has been widely used as an advanced nuclear medicine imaging technique that yields quantitative images of regional in vivo biology and biochemistry. The compact size of the SiPM allows direct one to one coupling between the scintillation crystal and the photosensor, yielding better timing and energy resolutions than the light sharing methods that have to be used in photomultiplier tube (PMT) PET systems. To decrease the volume of readout electronics, a front end multiplexer with position decoder is a common choice for the one to one syste…
