There is a growing interest in the conservation of invariants when numerically solving a system of ordinary differential equations. Methods that exactly preserve these quantities in time are known as geometric integrators. In this paper we apply the recently developed mimetic framework to the solution of a system of first order ordinary differential equations. Depending on the discrete Hodge-* employed, two classes of arbitrary order time integrators are derived. It is shown that the one based on a canonical Hodge-* results in a symplectic integrator, whereas the one based on a Galerkin Hodge-* results in an energy preserving integrator. A set of numerical tests confirms these theoretical results.
Numerical methods: mimetic finite differences and finite elements, are analyzed from a numerical point of view. It seeks to conclude on the efficiency, order of convergence and computational cost of these methods. The analysis is done in boundary value problems one-dimensional (convection-diffusion equation at steady) with different variations in the gradient, diffusion coefficient and convective velocity. A mimetic spectral element discretization, utilizing a novel Galerkin projection Hodge star operator, of the macroscopic Maxwell equations in Hamiltonian form is presented. The idea of splitting purely topological and metric dependent quantities is natural in the Hamiltonian modeling framework as the Poisson bracket is metric free with the Hamiltonian containing all metric information. This idea may be incorporated into the mimetic spectral element method by directly discretizing the Poincaré duality structure. This "split exterior calculus mimetic spectral element method" yields spatially dis…
We present a hybrid mimetic finite-difference and virtual element formulation for coupled single-phase poromechanics on unstructured meshes. The key advantage of the scheme is that it is convergent on complex meshes containing highly distorted cells with arbitrary shapes. We use a local pressure-jump stabilization method based on unstructured macro-elements to prevent the development of spurious pressure modes in incompressible problems approaching undrained conditions. A scalable linear solution strategy is obtained using a block-triangular preconditioner designed specifically for the saddle-…

Maxwell's equations are a system of partial differential equations that govern the laws of electromagnetic induction. We study a mimetic finite-difference (MFD) discretization of the equations which preserves important underlying physical properties. We show that, after mass-lumping and appropriate scaling, the MFD discretization is equivalent to a structure-preserving finite-element (FE) scheme. This allows for a transparent analysis of the MFD method using the FE framework, and provides an avenue for the construction of efficient and robust linear solvers for the discretized system. In parti…
A model of the three-dimensional rotating compressible Euler equations on the cubed sphere is presented. The model uses a mixed mimetic spectral element discretization which allows for the exact exchanges of kinetic, internal and potential energy via the compatibility properties of the chosen function spaces. A Strang carryover dimensional splitting procedure is used, with the horizontal dynamics solved explicitly and the vertical dynamics solved implicitly so as to avoid the CFL restriction of the vertical sound waves. The function spaces used to represent the horizontal dynamics are disconti…
Upwinded mass fluxes are described and analysed for advection operators discretised using mixed mimetic spectral elements. This involves a Petrov-Galerkin formulation by which the mass flux test functions are evaluated at downstream locations along velocity characteristics. As for the original mixed mimetic spectral element advection operator, the upwinded mass flux advection operator is conservative, however unlike the original advection operator, which is purely hyperbolic, the upwinded advection operator adds dissipation which is biased towards high wave numbers. The upwinded advection oper…
A framework for exponential time discretization of the multilayer rotating shallow water equations is developed in combination with a mimetic discretization in space. The method is based on a combination of existing exponential time differencing (ETD) methods and a careful choice of approximate Jacobians. The discrete Hamiltonian structure and conservation properties of the model are taken into account, in order to ensure stability of the method for large time steps and simulation horizons. In the case of many layers, further efficiency can be gained by a layer reduction which is based on the …

In this paper we propose a novel approach to discretize linear port-Hamiltonian systems while preserving the underlying structure. We present a finite element exterior calculus formulation that is able to mimetically represent conservation laws and cope with mixed open boundary conditions using a single computational mesh. The possibility of including open boundary conditions allows for modular composition of complex multi-physical systems whereas the exterior calculus formulation provides a coordinate-free treatment. Our approach relies on a dual-field representation of the physical system th…
Methods for discretizing port-Hamiltonian systems are of interest both for simulation and control purposes. Despite the large literature on mixed finite elements, no rigorous analysis of the connections between mixed elements and port-Hamiltonian systems has been carried out. In this paper we demonstrate how existing methods can be employed to discretize dynamical plate problems in a structure-preserving way. Based on convergence results of existing schemes, new error estimates are conjectured; numerical simulations confirm the expected behaviors.
We derive a formulation of the nonhydrostatic equations in spherical geometry with a Lorenz staggered vertical discretization. The combination conserves a discrete energy in exact time integration when coupled with a mimetic horizontal discretization. The formulation is a version of Dubos and Tort (2014) rewritten in terms of primitive variables. It is valid for terrain following mass or height coordinates and for both Eulerian or vertically Lagrangian discretizations. The discretization relies on an extension to Simmons and Burridge (1981) vertical differencing which we show obeys a discrete …
A port-Hamiltonian (pH) system formulation is a geometrical notion used to formulate conservation laws for various physical systems. The distributed parameter port-Hamiltonian formulation models infinite dimensional Hamiltonian dynamical systems that have a non-zero energy flow through the boundaries. In this paper we propose a novel framework for discontinuous Galerkin (DG) discretizations of pH-systems. Linking DG methods with pH-systems gives rise to compatible structure preserving finite element discretizations along with flexibility in terms of geometry and function spaces of the variable…

In this paper, Particle-in-Cell algorithms for the Vlasov-Poisson system are presented based on its Poisson bracket structure. The Poisson equation is solved by finite element methods, in which the appropriate finite element spaces are taken to guarantee that the semi-discretized system possesses a well defined discrete Poisson bracket structure. Then, splitting methods are applied to the semi-discretized system by decomposing the Hamiltonian function. The resulting discretizations are proved to be Poisson bracket preserving. Moreover, the conservative quantities of the system are also well pr…
In the first part of the paper, we propose and rigorously analyze a mixed finite element method for the approximation of the periodic strong solution to the fully nonlinear second-order Hamilton--Jacobi--Bellman equation with coefficients satisfying the Cordes condition. These problems arise as the corrector problems in the homogenization of Hamilton--Jacobi--Bellman equations. The second part of the paper focuses on the numerical homogenization of such equations, more precisely on the numerical approximation of the effective Hamiltonian. Numerical experiments demonstrate the approximation sch…
The anisotropic and heterogeneous $N$-dimensional wave equation, controlled and observed at the boundary, is considered as a port-Hamiltonian system. A recent structure-preserving mixed Galerkin method is applied, leading directly to a finite-dimensional port-Hamiltonian system: its numerical analysis is carried out in a general framework. Optimal choices of mixed finite elements are then proved to reach the best trade-off between the convergence rate and the number of degrees of freedom for the state error. Exta compatibility conditions are identified for the Hamiltonian error to be twice tha…
This paper presents a structure-preserving spatial discretization method for distributed parameter port-Hamiltonian systems. The class of considered systems are hyperbolic systems of two conservation laws in arbitrary spatial dimension and geometries. For these systems, a partioned finite element method is derived, based on the integration by parts of one of the two conservation laws written in weak form. The nonlinear 1D Shallow Water Equation (SWE) is first considered as a motivation example. Then the method is investigated on the example of the nonlinear 2D SWE. Complete derivation of the r…
Due to the wide separation of time scales in geophysical fluid dynamics, semi-implicit time integrators are commonly used in operational atmospheric forecast models. They guarantee the stable treatment of fast (acoustic and gravity) waves, while not suffering from severe restrictions on the timestep size. To propagate the state of the atmosphere forward in time, a non-linear equation for the prognostic variables has to be solved at every timestep. Since the nonlinearity is typically weak, this is done with a small number of Newton- or Picard- iterations, which in turn require the efficient sol…
