We describe novel optical switching schemes operating at femtosecond time scales by employing free carrier (FC) excitation. Such unprecedented switching times are made possible by spatially patterning the density of the excited FCs. In the first realization, we rely on diffusion, i.e., on the nonlocality of the FC nonlinear response of the semiconductor, to erase the initial FC pattern and, thereby, eliminate the reflectivity of the system. In the second realization, we erase the FC pattern by launching a second pump pulse at a controlled delay. We discuss the advantages and limitations of the proposed approaches and demonstrate their potential applicability for switching ultrashort pulses propagating in silicon waveguides. We show switching efficiencies of up to $50\%$ for $100$ fs pump pulses, which is an unusually high level of efficiency for such a short interaction time, a result of the use of the strong FC nonlinearity. Due to limitations of saturation and pattern effects, these schemes can be employed for switching applications that require femtosecond features but standard repetition rates. Such applications include switching of ultrashort pulses, femtosecond spectroscopy (gating), time-reversal of short pulses for aberration compensation, and many more. This approach is also the starting point for ultrafast amplitude modulations and a new route toward the spatio-temporal shaping of short optical pulses.
In this paper, we demonstrate a pulse energy-governed nonlinear self-switching of femtosecond pulses at wavelength of 1700 nm in a highly nonlinear high index contrast dual-core fibre. The fibre structure is composed of two microdimension cores and a solid cladding made of two thermally matched soft glasses developed in-house. A double switching behaviour under monotonic increase of the input pulse energy from 1 nJ to 3 nJ was observed at 35 mm fibre length in its anomalous dispersion region. A spatial intensity distribution measurement identified a switching contrast of 16.7 dB, and the regis…
Nanosphere-on-mirror plasmonic antennas, each having a monolayer graphene or MoS2 sheet in the gap, were pumped with a femtosecond laser. Abrupt turnings in the scattering linewidth and peak intensity trends as the laser power changed were experimentally observed. Theoretical modelling of dynamic plasmon evolvement attributes the turning to transitioning between two plasmon states, with a universal switching threshold of four-wave mixing efficiency around 0.14%. This bistability is rendered by a strong feedback from the nonlinear gap current to the gap plasmons, and involvement of both four an…
All-optical switching of 77 fs pulses centered at 1560 nm, driven by 270 fs, 1030 nm pulses in a dual-core optical fiber exhibiting high index contrast is presented. The fiber is made of a thermally matched pair of lead silicate and borosilicate glasses used as core and cladding material, respectively. The novel switching approach is based on nonlinear balancing of dual-core asymmetry, by control pulse intensity induced group velocity reduction of the fast fiber channel. Due to the fiber core made of soft glass with high nonlinearity high switching contrast exceeding 20 dB is attained under ap…
Improved current saturation and shifted switching threshold voltage in In2O3 nanowire based, fully transparent NMOS inverters via femtosecond laser annealing
Optical nonlinear functions are crucial for various applications in integrated photonics, such as all-optical information processing, photonic neural networks and on-chip ultrafast light sources. Due to the weak nonlinearities in most integrated photonic platforms, realizing optical nonlinear functions typically requires large driving energies in the picojoules level or beyond, thus imposing a barrier for most applications. Here, we tackle this challenge and demonstrate an integrated nonlinear splitter device in lithium niobate nano-waveguides by simultaneous engineering of the dispersion and …
We report a detailed study on soliton steering dynamics in a parity-time-symmetric directional coupler in the femtosecond domain, which requires incorporation of higher-order perturbative effects such as third-order and fourth-order dispersions, self-steepening, and intrapulse Raman scattering. With a high gain/loss, the combination of all these effects is found to stabilize the soliton pulse evolution in the coupler from the chaotic behavior of unperturbed evolution. This work demonstrates that efficient soliton steering can be achieved at very low critical power and a relatively higher gain/…
Energy carrier evolution is crucial for material performance. Ultrafast microscopy has been widely applied to visualize the spatiotemporal evolution of energy carriers. However, direct imaging of small amounts of energy carriers on nanoscale remains difficult due to extremely weak transient signals. Here we present a method for ultrasensitive and high-throughput imaging of energy carrier evolution in space and time. This method combines femtosecond pump-probe techniques with interferometric scattering microscopy (iSCAT), named Femto-iSCAT. The interferometric principle and unique spatially-mod…
Ultrafast control of magnetization on the nanometer length scale, in particular all-optical switching, is key to putting ultrafast magnetism on the path towards future technological application in data storage technology. However, magnetization manipulation with light on this length scale is challenging due to the wavelength limitations of optical radiation. Here, we excite transient magnetic gratings in a GdFe alloy with a periodicity of 87 nm by interference of two coherent femtosecond light pulses in the extreme ultraviolet spectral range at the free electron laser facility FERMI. The subse…

Optical frequency comb technique provides a significant bridge to transfer the stability between optical frequency and radio frequency. The advances of this technology greatly promote the development of precision spectroscopy, optical time/frequency transfer, optical frequency division, long-distance transfer of time/frequency references and high-precision distance measurement. Benefiting from the wide spectral outputs, femtosecond lasers have become the best choice …
Dissipation of electromagnetic energy through absorption is a fundamental process that underpins phenomena ranging from photovoltaics to photography, analytical spectroscopy, photosynthesis, and human vision. Absorption is also a dynamic process that depends on the duration of the optical illumination. Here we report on the resonant plasmonic absorption of a nanostructured metamaterial and the non-resonant absorption of an unstructured gold film at different optical pulse durations. By examining the absorption in travelling and standing waves, we observe a plasmonic relaxation time of 11 fs as…
The emergence of confined structures and pattern formation are exceptional manifestations of concurring nonlinear interactions found in a variety of physical, chemical and biological systems[1]. Optical solitons are a hallmark of extreme spatial or temporal confinement enabled by a variety of nonlinearities. Such particle-like structures can assemble in complex stable arrangements, forming "soliton molecules"[2,3]. Recent works revealed oscillatory internal motions of these bound states, akin to molecular vibrations[4-8]. These observations beg the question as to how far the "molecular" analog…
Rippled area formed by surface plasmon polaritons upon femtosecond laser double-pulse irradiation of silicon: the role of carrier generation and relaxation processes
We report on femtosecond laser writing of single mode optical waveguides in chalcogenide Gallium Lanthanum Sulphide (GLS) glass. A multiscan fabrication process was employed to create waveguides with symmetric single mode guidance and low insertion losses at 800 nm wavelength, compatible with Ti:Sapphire ultrafast lasers. μRaman and X-Ray microanalysis were used to elucidate the origin of the laser-induced refractive index change in GLS. Nonlinear refractive index measurements of the waveguides were performed by finding the optical switching parameters of a directional coupler, demonstrating t…
We experimentally investigate a nonlinear switching mechanism in a dual-core highly nonlinear optical fiber. We focus the input beam of femtosecond pulses on one core only, to identify transitions between inter-core oscillations, self-trapping in the cross core, and self-trapping of the pulse in the straight core. A model based in the system of coupled nonlinear Schrodinger equations provides surprisingly good agreement with the experimental findings.
Femtosecond point-projection microscopy (fs-PPM) is an electron microscopy technique that possesses a combination of high spatio-temporal resolution and sensitivity to local electric fields. This allows it to visualize ultrafast charge carrier dynamics in complex nanomaterials. We benchmark the capability of the fs-PPM technique by imaging the ultrafast dynamics of charge carriers produced by multiphoton ionization of silver nanowires. The space-charge driven motion of photoelectrons is followed on \mbox{sub-100}\,nm length scales, while the dynamics are captured on 30-100 fs time scales. The …
Experimental and theoretical studies of laser-induced breakdown in dielectrics provide conflicting conclusions about the possibility to trigger ionization avalanche on the sub-picosecond time scale and the relative importance of carrier-impact ionization over field ionization. On the one hand, current models based on single ionization-rate equations do not account for the gradual heating of the charge carriers which, for short laser pulses, might not be sufficient to start an avalanche. On the other hand, models based on multiple rate equations that track the carriers kinetics rely on several …
Floquet engineering offers a path to optically-controlled materials, but experimental implementations have frequently relied on femtosecond pulses to achieve the high peak fields required to maximise interactions and obtain a measurable response. The Floquet formalism, however, is based on a continuous, periodic drive. Here we use femtosecond laser pulses to drive the optical Stark effect, a simple realization of Floquet engineering, in monolayer WS2. By monitoring the coherent evolution of the free-induction decay, we show that the system evolves adiabatically, and that the finite duration of…
In this work we use femtosecond laser pulses of 800 nm wavelength to excite and characterize the multiphoton luminescence emission of single gold nanoparticles. For excitation with 100 fs laser pulses we observe a two and three photon emission dominated by radiative electron hole pair recombination, while the emission is caused by radiative plasmon decay for excitation with 500 fs pulses. For single gold nanorods with different aspect ratios, we study the interplay between the particle plasmon and electron hole pairs, which enables us to develop a quantitative model to fully describe the two a…
Carrier scattering processes are studied in CH$_3$NH$_3$PbI$_3$ using temperature-dependent four-wave mixing experiments. Our results indicate that scattering by ionized impurities limits the interband dephasing time (T$_2$) below 30~K, with strong electron-phonon scattering dominating at higher temperatures (with a timescale of 125 fs at 100 K). Our theoretical simulations provide quantitative agreement with the measured carrier scattering rate and show that the rate of acoustic phonon scattering is enhanced by strong spin-orbit coupling, which modifies the band-edge density of states. The Ra…
A light bullet is an extremely compressed in space and time wave packet of a few optical cycles, which is formed in the bulk transparent dielectric during femtosecond filamentation under anomalous group velocity dispersion. The effect of a carrier-envelope phase on the dynamics of the light bullet was demonstrated for the first time. The carrier-envelope phase change during a light bullet propagation causes synchronous oscillations of its spatial, temporal and energy parameters with the period decreasing with increasing carrier wavelength. The oscillation period of parameters of a near-single …

We present a theoretical investigation of the yet unexplored ultrafast processes and dynamics of the produced excited carriers upon irradiation of Silicon with femtosecond pulsed lasers in the mid-infrared (mid-IR) spectral region. The evolution of the carrier density and thermal response of the electron-hole and lattice subsystems are analysed for various wavelengths λL in the range between 2.2 μm and 3.3 μm where the influence of two and three-photon absorption mechanisms is explored. The role of induced Kerr effect is highlighted and it manifests a more pronounced influence at smaller wavel…
In this paper, we present a large signal and switching analysis for the Heterojunction Bipolar Transistor Laser (TL) to reveal its optical and electrical behavior under high current injection conditions. Utilizing appropriate models for carrier transport, nonlinear optical gain and optical confinement factor (OCF), we have simulated the large signal response of the HBTL in relatively low and high modulation frequencies. Our results predict that for multiple quantum well structures at low frequencies there should not be a difference in carrier density either the photon density. However, carrier…
We introduce a wide-field magneto-optical microscope to probe magnetization dynamics with femtosecond temporal and sub-micrometer spatial resolution. We carefully calibrate the non-linear dependency between the magnetization of the sample and the detected light intensity by determining the absolute values of the magneto-optical polarization rotation. With that, an analytical transfer function is defined to directly map the recorded intensity to the corresponding magnetization, which results in significantly reduced acquisition times and relaxed computational requirements. The performance of th…
Vanadium dioxide (VO2) is one of the most promising materials for developing hybrid photonic integrated devices (PICs). However, despite switching times as low as a few femtoseconds have been reported, the all-optical temporal dynamics of VO2 embedded in a waveguide using an in-plane optical signal remain still hidden. Here, we experimentally investigate this behavior in hybrid VO2/Si waveguides by using pump-probe measurements at telecom wavelengths. Our results show switching times in the micro and nanosecond range, suggesting that the phase transition is triggered thermally from the light a…
Next-generation communication networks require > Tbit/s single-channel data transfer and processing with sub-picosecond switches and routers at network nodes. Materials enabling ultrafast all-optical switching have high potential to solve the speed limitations of current optoelectronic circuits. Chromoproteins have been shown to exhibit a fast light-controlled refractive index change much larger than that induced by the optical Kerr effect due to a purely electronic nonlinearity, alleviating the driving energy requirements for optical switching. Here, we report femtosecond transient grating ex…
Femtosecond micromachining offers a contact-free and mask-less technique for material patterning. With ultrafast laser irradiation, permanent modifications to the properties of single layer graphene through material ablation or defect introduction can be induced. Multiple femtosecond pulse interactions with a single layer graphene are studied and a low laser ablation threshold ~9.2 mJ/cm2 is reported for a 15 second illumination time. Clean ablated structures are generated in such a multi pulse irradiation configuration at low pulse energies as an attractive alternative to ablation with single…
