We introduce a wide-field magneto-optical microscope to probe magnetization dynamics with femtosecond temporal and sub-micrometer spatial resolution. We carefully calibrate the non-linear dependency between the magnetization of the sample and the detected light intensity by determining the absolute values of the magneto-optical polarization rotation. With that, an analytical transfer function is defined to directly map the recorded intensity to the corresponding magnetization, which results in significantly reduced acquisition times and relaxed computational requirements. The performance of the instrument is characterized by probing the magnetic all-optical switching dynamics of GdFe in a pump-probe experiment. The high spatial resolution of the microscope allows for accurately subdividing the laser-excited area into different fluence-regions in order to capture the strongly non-linear magnetization dynamics as a function of the optical pump intensity in a single measurement.
Imaging and manipulating individual atoms with submicrometer separation can be instrumental for quantum simulation of condensed matter Hamiltonians and quantum computation with neutral atoms. Quantum gas microscope experiments in most cases rely on quite costly solutions. Here we present an open-source design of a microscope objective for atomic strontium consisting solely of off-the-shelf lenses that is diffraction-limited for 461${\,}$nm light. A prototype built with a simple stacking design is measured to have a resolution of 0.63(4)${\,μ}$m, which is in agreement with the predicted value. …
We describe a two-color pump-probe scanning magneto-optical Kerr effect (MOKE) microscope which we have developed to investigate electron spin phenomena in semiconductors at cryogenic temperatures with picosecond time and micrometer spatial resolution. The key innovation of our microscope is the usage of an ultrafast `white light' supercontinuum fiber-laser source which provides access to the whole visible and near-infrared spectral range. Our Kerr microscope allows for the independent selection of the excitation and detection energy while avoiding the necessity to synchronize the pulse trains…
We present a simple method and its experimental implementation to completely determine the characteristics of the pump-and-probe pulse and the Stokes pulse in a coherent anti-Stokes Raman scattering microscope at sample level without additional autocorrelators. Our approach exploits the delay line, ubiquitous in such microscopes, to perform a convolution of the pump-and-probe and Stokes pulses as a function of their relative delay and it is based on the detection of the photons emitted from an appropriate non-linear sample. The analysis of the non-resonant four-wave-mixing and sum-frequency-ge…
Remote focusing is widely used in 3D two-photon microscopy and 3D photostimulation because it enables fast axial scanning without moving the objective lens or specimen. However, due to the design constraints of microscope optics, remote focus units are often located in non-telecentric positions in the optical path, leading to significant depth dependent 3D field distortions in the imaging volume. To address this limitation, we characterized 3D field distortions arising from non-telecentric remote focusing and present a method for distortion precompensation. We demonstrate its applicability for…

An innovative method was invented to create normalized cross correlation depth response curve from diffraction patterns of the pinhole. Using this approach, the sub-micrometer scale depth can be detected with high accuracy and precisi…
We report on the fabrication and diffraction-limited characterization of parabolic focusing micromirrors. Sub - micron beam waists are measured for mirrors with 10 μm radius aperture and measured fixed focal lengths in the range from 24 μm to 36 μm. Optical characterization of the 3D intensity in the nearfield produced when the device is illuminated with collimated light is performed using a modified confocal microscope. Results are compared directly with angular spectrum simulations, yielding strong agreement between experiment and theory, and identifying the competition between diffraction a…
The transverse coherence of electrons is of utmost importance in high resolution electron microscopes, point-projection microscopes, low-energy electron microscopy and various other applications. Pulsed versions of many of these have recently been realized, mostly relying on femtosecond laser-triggering electron emission from a sharp needle source. We here observe electron interference fringes and measure how the interference visibility becomes reduced as we increase the electron bunch charge. Due to the extremely strong spatio-temporal confinement of the electrons generated here, we observe t…
We report a novel scheme to generate laser-induced, ultrafast, intense (Tesla scale), spatially isolated, magnetic fields. Three-dimensional particle-in-cell simulations show that a femtosecond azimuthally-polarized infrared vector beam, aimed to a conducting circular aperture, produces an intense axially polarized tip-shaped femtosecond magnetic field, extending over micrometer distances and being isolated from the electric field. Our results are backed-up by an analytic model, demonstrating the underlying physics and guiding for optimal parameters. In particular, we find the conditions under…
Ultrafast control of magnetization on the nanometer length scale, in particular all-optical switching, is key to putting ultrafast magnetism on the path towards future technological application in data storage technology. However, magnetization manipulation with light on this length scale is challenging due to the wavelength limitations of optical radiation. Here, we excite transient magnetic gratings in a GdFe alloy with a periodicity of 87 nm by interference of two coherent femtosecond light pulses in the extreme ultraviolet spectral range at the free electron laser facility FERMI. The subse…

Fast fabrication of micro-optical elements for generation of optical vortex beams based on the q-plate design is demonstrated by femtosecond (fs) laser ablation of gold film on glass. Q-plates with diameter of ~0.5 mm were made in ~1 min using galvanometric scanners with writing speed of 5 mm/s. Period of gratings of 0.8 micrometers and groove width of 250 nm were achieved using fs-laser ablation at 343 nm wavelength. Phase and intensity analysis of optical vortex generators was carried out at 633 nm wavelength and confirmed the designed performance. Efficiency of spin-orbital conversion of th…
We put forward a co-axial pump(optical)-probe(X-rays) experimental concept and show performance of the optical component. A Bessel beam generator with a central 100 micrometers-diameter hole (on the optical axis) was fabricated using femtosecond (fs) laser structuring inside a silica plate. This flat-axicon optical element produces a needle-like axial intensity distribution which can be used for the optical pump pulse. The fs-X-ray free electron laser (X-FEL) beam of sub-1 micrometer diameter can be introduced through the central hole along the optical axis onto a target as a probe. Different …
Lasers capable of generating attosecond X-ray pulses in the water window (282 to 533 eV) through high-order harmonic generation are normally based on inefficient, multi-stage optical parametric amplifiers or optical parametric chirped pulse amplifiers pumped by femtosecond or picosecond lasers. Here we report a very efficient single amplification stage laser based on traditional chirped pulse amplification capable of producing 3 mJ, near-transform limited 44 fs (<6 cycles), 1 kHz pulses centered at 2.5 micrometer. The 68 GW peak power is the highest value ever reached at this wavelength. In or…

We report on the development of an ultrafast Transmission Electron Microscope based on a laser-driven cold-field emission source. We first describe the instrument before reporting on numerical simulations of the laser-driven electron emission. These simulations predict the temporal and spectral properties of the femtosecond electron pulses generated in our ultrafast electron source. We then discuss the effects that contribute to the spatial, temporal and spectral broadening of these electron pulses during their propagation from the electron source to the sample and finally to the detectors of …
Using SEA TADPOLE, we directly measure the spatio-temporal field of diffracting ultrashort pulses with femtosecond temporal and micrometer spatial resolutions. Using a circular aperture and an opaque disk, we observe boundary wave pulses including their superluminal speeds.
Using SEA TADPOLE with micrometer-range spatial and femtosecond-range temporal resolution, we report the first direct spatiotemporal measurements of ultrashort Bessel-X pulses. We demonstrate their propagation invariance and superluminal velocity and verify our results with simulations
Measurements of the spatial and temporal coherence of single, femtosecond x-ray pulses generated by the first hard x-ray free-electron laser (FEL), the Linac Coherent Light Source (LCLS), are presented. Single shot measurements were performed at 780 eV x-ray photon energy using apertures containing double pinholes in "diffract and destroy" mode. We determined a coherence length of 17 micrometers in the vertical direction, which is approximately the size of the focused LCLS beam in the same direction. The analysis of the diffraction patterns produced by the pinholes with the largest separation …
A real-time ranging lidar with 0.1 Mega Hertz update rate and few-micrometer resolution incorporating dispersive Fourier transformation and instantaneous microwave frequency measurement is proposed and demonstrated. As time-stretched femtosecond laser pulse passing through an all-fiber Mach-Zehnder Interferometer, where the detection light beam is inserted into the optical path of one arm, the displacement is encoded to the frequency variation of the temporal interferogram. To deal with the challenges in storage and real-time processing of the microwave pulse generated on a photodetector, we t…
The creation of high energy density ($\gtrsim10^6$ joules per cm$^3$) over-critical plasmas in a large volume has essential applications in the study of warm dense matter, being present in the hot cores of stars and planets. It was recently shown that femtosecond Bessel beams enable creating over-critical plasmas inside sapphire with sub-wavelength radius and several tens of micrometers in length. Here, the dependence of field structure and absorption mechanism on the plasma density transverse profile are investigated by performing self-consistent Particle-In-Cell (PIC) simulations. Two { limi…
Mode-locked lasers, which produce ultrashort pulses in the picosecond and femtosecond range, have enabled some of the most precise measurements. However, despite significant recent progress, resolving the temporal behavior of their short pulses is still a challenge. State-of-the-art oscilloscopes with tens of picosecond resolution prevent time-resolved observations in mode-locked lasers and limit the real-time pulse evolution tracking of ultrafast lasers. Here, using the time-lens technique with a Raman amplifier, we implement an ultrafast single-shot time-microscope (TM) with a high temporal …

We developed a multifocus optical-resolution photoacoustic microscope (MPAM) with extended depth of field (DoF) by using a tunable acoustic gradient (TAG) lens and a pulse delay method. TAG lens is designed to control the divergence angle of the laser beam. Three fibers with different length are used to output three laser pulses with different delay time. By controlling the fire time of the laser pulses, we can get three focal spot through TAG lens in our system in one A-line data acquisition. The DoF of MPAM measured using a vertically tilted carbon fiber is about 775 micrometers. The lateral…
This thesis centres on the development of multidimensional fluorescence imaging tools, with a particular emphasis on fluorescence lifetime imaging (FLIM) microscopy for application to biological research. The key aspects of this thesis are the development and application of tunable supercontinuum excitation sources based on supercontinuum generation in microstructured optical fibres and the development of stimulated emission depletion (STED) microscope capable of fluorescence lifetime imaging beyond the diffraction limit. The utility of FLIM for biological research is illustrated by examples o…
3D printing allows rapid fabrication of complex objects from digital designs. One 3D-printing process, direct laser writing, polymerises a light-sensitive material by steering a focused laser beam through the shape of the object to be created. The highest-resolution direct laser writing systems use a femtosecond laser to effect two-photon polymerisation. The focal (polymerisation) point is steered over the shape of the desired object with mechanised stages or galvanometer-controlled mirrors. Here we report a new high-resolution direct laser writing system that employs a resonant mirror scanner…

Prior to the invention of holography or lasers, Bragg's X-ray microscope opened the door to optical computation in short-wavelength studies using spatially coherent visible light, including phase retrieval methods. This optical approach lost ground to semiconductor detection and digital computing in the 1960s. Since then, visible optics including spatial light modulators (SLMs), array detectors and femtosecond lasers have become widely available, routinely allowing versatile and computer-interfaced imposition of optical phase, molecular coherent control, and detection. Today, high brilliance X…
We present a direct experimental investigation of the optical field distribution around a suspended tapered optical nanofiber by means of a fluorescent scanning probe. Using a 100 nm diameter fluorescent bead as a probe of the field intensity, we study interferences made by a nanofiber (400 nm diameter) scattering a plane wave (568 nm wavelength). Our scanning fluorescence near-field microscope maps the optical field over 36 $μ$m$^2$, with $λ/ 5$ resolution, from contact with the surface of the nanofiber to a few micrometers away. Comparison between experiments and Mie scattering theory allows…
THz-spectroscopy is an attractive imaging tool for scientific research, especially in life science, offering non-destructive interaction with matter due to its low photon energies. However, wavelengths above $100μm$ principally limit its spatial resolution in the far-field by diffraction to this regime, making it not sufficient to image biological cells in the micrometer scale. Therefore, super-resolution imaging techniques are required to overcome this restriction. Near-field-imaging using spintronic emitters offers the most feasible approach because of its simplicity and potential for wide-r…
Three dimensional (3D) fast (< 0.5 hour) printing of micro-optical elements down to sub-wavelength resolution over 100 micrometers footprint areas using femtosecond (fs-)laser oscillator is presented. Using sub-1 nJ pulse energies, optical vortex generators made of polymerised grating segments with an azimuthally changing orientation have been fabricated in SZ2080 resist; width of polymerised rods was ~150 nm and period 0.6-1 micrometers. Detailed phase retardance analysis was carried out manually with Berek compensator (under a white light illumination) and using an equivalent principle by an…
In this paper we describe the technical implementation of pump-probe cathodoluminescence microscopy (PP-CL), a novel technique for studying ultrafast dynamics in materials using combined excitation of electron and laser pulses. The PP-CL setup is based on a commercial scanning electron microscope combined with a femtosecond laser. Here we discuss the design, technical details, and characterization of the PP-CL setup. The luminescence emitted by the sample (either photoluminescence, cathodoluminescence or a combination of both) can be analyzed in terms of spectrum, temporal statistics, and freq…
Watching the motion of electrons on their natural nanometre length- and femtosecond time scales is a fundamental goal and an open challenge of contemporary ultrafast science. Optical techniques and electron microscopy currently mostly provide either ultrahigh temporal or spatial resolution, yet, microscopy techniques with combined space-time resolution need further development. Here we create an ultrafast electron source by plasmon nanofocusing on a sharp gold taper and implement this source in an ultrafast point-projection electron microscope. This source is used, in an optical pump - electro…
RAndom Temporal Signals (RATS) method has proven to be a useful and versatile method for measuring photoluminescence (PL) dynamics and fluorescence lifetime imaging (FLIM). Here, we present two fundamental development steps in the method. First, we demonstrate that by using random digital laser modulation in RATS, it is possible to implement the measurement of PL dynamics with temporal resolution in units of nanoseconds. Secondly, we propose an alternative approach to evaluating the FLIM measurements based on a single-pixel camera experiment. In contrast to the standard evaluation, which requi…
