The emergence of confined structures and pattern formation are exceptional manifestations of concurring nonlinear interactions found in a variety of physical, chemical and biological systems[1]. Optical solitons are a hallmark of extreme spatial or temporal confinement enabled by a variety of nonlinearities. Such particle-like structures can assemble in complex stable arrangements, forming "soliton molecules"[2,3]. Recent works revealed oscillatory internal motions of these bound states, akin to molecular vibrations[4-8]. These observations beg the question as to how far the "molecular" analogy reaches, whether further concepts from molecular spectroscopy apply in this scenario, and if such intra-molecular dynamics can be externally driven or manipulated. Here, we probe and control such ultrashort bound-states in an optical oscillator, utilizing real-time spectroscopy and time-dependent external perturbations. We introduce two-dimensional spectroscopy of the linear and nonlinear bound-state response and resolve anharmonicities in the soliton interaction leading to overtone and sub-harmonic generation. Employing a non-perturbative interaction, we demonstrate all-optical switching between distinct states with different binding separation, opening up novel schemes of ultrafast spectroscopy, optical logic operations and all-optical memory.
We numerically propose a scheme for realizing an all-optical femtosecond soliton diode based on a tailored heterojunction Bragg grating, which is designed by two spatially asymmetric chirped cholesteric liquid crystals. Our simulations demonstrate that with the consideration of optical nonlinearity, not only the femtosecond diode effect with nonreciprocal transmission ratio up to 120 can be achieved, but also the optical pulse evolving into soliton which maintains its shape during propagation through the sample is observed. Further, the influence of pulse width and the carrier wavelength to th…
We report a detailed study on soliton steering dynamics in a parity-time-symmetric directional coupler in the femtosecond domain, which requires incorporation of higher-order perturbative effects such as third-order and fourth-order dispersions, self-steepening, and intrapulse Raman scattering. With a high gain/loss, the combination of all these effects is found to stabilize the soliton pulse evolution in the coupler from the chaotic behavior of unperturbed evolution. This work demonstrates that efficient soliton steering can be achieved at very low critical power and a relatively higher gain/…
The nonlinear pulse propagation in an optical fibers with varying parameters is investigated. The capture of moving in the frequency domain femtosecond colored soliton by a dispersive trap formed in an amplifying fiber makes it possible to accumulate an additional energy and to reduce significantly the soliton pulse duration. Nonlinear dynamics of the chirped soliton pulses in the dispersion managed systems is also investigated. The methodology developed does provide a systematic way to generate infinite ``ocean'' of the chirped soliton solutions of the nonlinear Schrödinger equation (NSE) wit…
We study symmetric and asymmetric optical multi-peak solitons on a continuous wave background in the femtosecond regime of a single-mode fiber. Key characteristics of such multi-peak solitons, as the formation mechanism, propagation stability, and shape-changing collisions, are revealed in detail. Our results show that this multi-peak (symmetric or asymmetric) mode could be regarded as a single pulse formed by a nonlinear superposition of a periodic wave and a single-peak (W-shaped or antidark) soliton. In particular, a phase diagram for different types of nonlinear excitations on a continuous…
We present a high-speed wavelength tunable photonic crystal fiber-based source capable of generating tunable femtosecond solitons in the infrared region. Through measurements and numerical simulation, we show that both the pulsewidth and the spectral width of the output pulses remain nearly constant over the entire tuning range from 860 to 1160 nm. This remarkable behavior is observed even when pump pulses are heavily chirped (7400 fs^2), which allows to avoid bulky compensation optics, or the use of another fiber, for dispersion compensation usually required by the tuning device.
We describe novel optical switching schemes operating at femtosecond time scales by employing free carrier (FC) excitation. Such unprecedented switching times are made possible by spatially patterning the density of the excited FCs. In the first realization, we rely on diffusion, i.e., on the nonlocality of the FC nonlinear response of the semiconductor, to erase the initial FC pattern and, thereby, eliminate the reflectivity of the system. In the second realization, we erase the FC pattern by launching a second pump pulse at a controlled delay. We discuss the advantages and limitations of the…
We suggest a novel concept in the soliton switching based on the Bloch-wave filtering in periodic photonic structures. Taking a binary waveguide array as an example, we demonstrate that spatial solitons that belong to different spectral band gaps can be selectively reflected from or transmitted through an engineered defect, which acts as a low or high-pass filter for Bloch waves.
We show numerically that ultrashort self-defocusing temporal solitons colliding with a weak pulsed probe in the near-IR can convert the probe to the mid-IR. A near-perfect conversion efficiency is possible for a high effective soliton order. The near-IR self-defocusing soliton can form in a quadratic nonlinear crystal (beta-barium borate) in the normal dispersion regime due to cascaded (phase-mismatched) second-harmonic generation, and the mid-IR converted wave is formed in the anomalous dispersion regime between $λ=2.2-2.4~μ\rm m$ as a resonant dispersive wave. This process relies on non-dege…
The Zeno effect is investigated for soliton type pulses in a nonlinear directional coupler with dissipation. The effect consists in increase of the coupler transparency with increase of the dissipative losses in one of the arms. It is shown that localized dissipation can lead to switching of solitons between the arms. Power losses accompanying the switching can be fully compensated by using a combination of dissipative and active (in particular, parity-time -symmetric) segments.
In this paper, we demonstrate a pulse energy-governed nonlinear self-switching of femtosecond pulses at wavelength of 1700 nm in a highly nonlinear high index contrast dual-core fibre. The fibre structure is composed of two microdimension cores and a solid cladding made of two thermally matched soft glasses developed in-house. A double switching behaviour under monotonic increase of the input pulse energy from 1 nJ to 3 nJ was observed at 35 mm fibre length in its anomalous dispersion region. A spatial intensity distribution measurement identified a switching contrast of 16.7 dB, and the regis…
The paper addresses the bistability caused by spontaneous symmetry breaking bifurcation in a one-dimensional periodically corrugated nonlinear waveguide pumped by coherent light at normal incidence. The formation and the stability of the switching waves connecting the states of different symmetries are studied numerically. It is shown that the switching waves can form stable resting and moving bound states (dissipative solitons). The protocols of the creation of discussed nonlinear localized waves are suggested and verified by numerical simulations.
Nanosphere-on-mirror plasmonic antennas, each having a monolayer graphene or MoS2 sheet in the gap, were pumped with a femtosecond laser. Abrupt turnings in the scattering linewidth and peak intensity trends as the laser power changed were experimentally observed. Theoretical modelling of dynamic plasmon evolvement attributes the turning to transitioning between two plasmon states, with a universal switching threshold of four-wave mixing efficiency around 0.14%. This bistability is rendered by a strong feedback from the nonlinear gap current to the gap plasmons, and involvement of both four an…
We investigate the switching dynamics in a $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric fiber coupler composed of a saturable nonlinear material as the core. In such a saturable nonlinear medium, bistable solitons may evolve due to the balance between dispersion and saturable nonlinearity, which we extend in the context of the $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric coupler. Our investigations of power-controlled and phase-sensitive switching show richer soliton switching dynamics than the currently existing conventional counterparts, which may lead to ultrafast and efficient all-optical switching dynamics at very low power owi…
Infrared femtosecond laser pulses are important tools both in strong-field physics, driving X-ray high-harmonic generation, and as the basis for widely tuneable, if inefficient, ultrafast sources in the visible and ultraviolet. Although anomalous material dispersion simplifies compression to few-cycle pulses, attosecond pulses in the infrared have remained out of reach. We demonstrate soliton self-compression of 1800 nm laser pulses in hollow capillary fibers to sub-cycle envelope duration (2 fs) with 27 GW peak power, corresponding to attosecond field transients. In the same system, we genera…
Collision refers to a striking nonlinear interaction in dissipative systems, revealing the particle-like properties of solitons. In dual-wavelength mode-locked fiber lasers, collisions are inherent and periodic. However, how collisions influence the dynamical transitions in the dual-wavelength mode-locked state has still not been explored. In our research, dispersion management triggers the complex interactions between solitons in the cavity. We reveal the smooth or reversible Hopf-type bifurcation transitions of dual-color soliton molecules (SMs) during collision by real-time spectral measure…
Dual-coupled structure is typically used to actively change the local dispersion of microresonator through controllable avoided mode crossings (AMXs). In this paper, we investigate the reconfigurability of perfect soliton crystals (PSCs) based on dual-coupled microresonators. The switching dynamics of PSCs are numerically simulated using perturbed Lugiato-Lefever equation (LLE). Nonlinear phenomena such as solitons rearranging, merging and bursting are observed in the switching process. Specially, for the first time, we have discovered an unexplored $PSC$ $region$ in the microcomb power-detuni…
We study nonlinear wave phenomena in coupled ring resonator optical waveguides in the tight coupling regime. A discrete model for the system dynamics is put forward and its steady state nonlinear Bloch modes are derived. The switching behavior of the transmission system is addressed numerically and the results are explained in the light of this analytical result. We also present a numerical study on the spontaneous generation of Bragg solitons from a continuous-wave input.
We study propagation and on-off switching of two colliding soliton sequences in the presence of second-order dispersion, Kerr nonlinearity, linear loss, cubic gain, and quintic loss. Employing a Lotka-Volterra (LV) model for dynamics of soliton amplitudes along with simulations with two perturbed coupled nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS) equations, we show that stable long-distance propagation can be achieved for a wide range of the gain-loss coefficients, including values that are outside of the perturbative regime. Furthermore, we demonstrate robust on-off and off-on switching of one of the sequen…
We study resonant radiation generated by bound solitons in a twin-core fiber near zero-dispersion wavelength, in the presence of higher order dispersion terms. We propose a theoretical description of dispersive wave generation mechanism and derive resonance conditions. The presence of third order dispersion term leads to generation of polychromatic dispersive radiation and transition from the regime of center of mass oscillations to the regime of amplitude oscillations. Such a transition is not reproduced in the case of symmetric fourth order dispersion.
Generating energetic femtosecond mid-IR pulses is crucial for ultrafast spectroscopy, and currently relies on parametric processes that, while efficient, are also complex. Here we experimentally show a simple alternative that uses a single pump wavelength without any pump synchronization and without critical phase-matching requirements. Pumping a bulk quadratic nonlinear crystal (unpoled LiNbO$_3$ cut for noncritical phase-mismatched interaction) with sub-mJ near-IR 50-fs pulses, tunable and broadband ($\sim 1,000$ cm$^{-1}$) mid-IR pulses around $3.0~μ\rm m$ are generated with excellent spati…
All-optical switching of 77 fs pulses centered at 1560 nm, driven by 270 fs, 1030 nm pulses in a dual-core optical fiber exhibiting high index contrast is presented. The fiber is made of a thermally matched pair of lead silicate and borosilicate glasses used as core and cladding material, respectively. The novel switching approach is based on nonlinear balancing of dual-core asymmetry, by control pulse intensity induced group velocity reduction of the fast fiber channel. Due to the fiber core made of soft glass with high nonlinearity high switching contrast exceeding 20 dB is attained under ap…
Transistors based on various types of non-silicon nanowires have shown great potential for a variety of applications, especially for those require transparency and low-temperature substrates. However, critical requirements for circuit functionality such as saturated source-drain current, and matched threshold voltages of individual nanowire transistors in a way that is compatible with low temperature substrates, have not been achieved. Here we show that femtosecond laser pulses can anneal individual transistors based on In2O3 nanowires, improve the saturation of the source-drain current, and p…
Optical nonlinear functions are crucial for various applications in integrated photonics, such as all-optical information processing, photonic neural networks and on-chip ultrafast light sources. Due to the weak nonlinearities in most integrated photonic platforms, realizing optical nonlinear functions typically requires large driving energies in the picojoules level or beyond, thus imposing a barrier for most applications. Here, we tackle this challenge and demonstrate an integrated nonlinear splitter device in lithium niobate nano-waveguides by simultaneous engineering of the dispersion and …
Ultrafast control of magnetization on the nanometer length scale, in particular all-optical switching, is key to putting ultrafast magnetism on the path towards future technological application in data storage technology. However, magnetization manipulation with light on this length scale is challenging due to the wavelength limitations of optical radiation. Here, we excite transient magnetic gratings in a GdFe alloy with a periodicity of 87 nm by interference of two coherent femtosecond light pulses in the extreme ultraviolet spectral range at the free electron laser facility FERMI. The subse…
We investigate experimentally and theoretically effects of the inter-core propagation mismatch on nonlinear switching in dual-core high-index-contrast soft-glass optical fibers. Incident femtosecond pulses of various energy are fed into a single ("straight") core, to identify transitions between different dynamical regimes, viz., inter-core oscillations, self-trapping in the cross core, and retaining the pulse in the straight core. The transfer between channels, which has solitonic character, is controlled by the pulse's energy. A model based on the system of coupled nonlinear Schrödinger equa…
In this letter, we demonstrate the first all-fiber all-normal dispersion ytterbium-doped oscillator with nonlinear multimodal interference based saturable absorber capable to generate ultrashort dissipative soliton pulses. Additional to functioning as a saturable absorber, the use of multimode fiber segments between single mode fibers also ensures the bandpass filtering via multimode interference reimaging necessary to obtain dissipative soliton mode-locking. The oscillator generates dissipative soliton pulses at 1030 nm with 5.8 mW average power, 5 ps duration and 44.25 MHz repetition rate. P…
We develop a method for achieving scalable transmission stabilization and switching of $N$ colliding soliton sequences in optical waveguides with broadband delayed Raman response and narrowband nonlinear gain-loss. We show that dynamics of soliton amplitudes in $N$-sequence transmission is described by a generalized $N$-dimensional predator-prey model. Stability and bifurcation analysis for the predator-prey model are used to obtain simple conditions on the physical parameters for robust transmission stabilization as well as on-off and off-on switching of $M$ out of $N$ soliton sequences. Nume…
We suggest an effective method for controlling nonlinear switching in arrays of weakly coupled optical waveguides. We demonstrate the digitized switching of a narrow input beam for up to eleven waveguides in the engineered waveguide arrays.
The dispersion of index-guiding microstructured polymer optical fibers is calculated for second-harmonic generation. The quadratic nonlinearity is assumed to come from poling of the polymer, which in this study is chosen to be the cyclic olefin copolymer Topas. We found a very large phase mismatch between the pump and the second-harmonic waves. Therefore the potential for cascaded quadratic second-harmonic generation is investigated in particular for soliton compression of fs pulses. We found that excitation of temporal solitons from cascaded quadratic nonlinearities requires an effective quad…
The output pulses of a commercial high-power femtosecond fiber laser or amplifier are typically around 300-500 fs with a wavelength around 1030 nm and 10s of $μ$J pulse energy. Here we present a numerical study of cascaded quadratic soliton compression of such pulses in LiNbO$_3$ using a type I phase matching configuration. We find that because of competing cubic material nonlinearities compression can only occur in the nonstationary regime, where group-velocity mismatch induced Raman-like nonlocal effects prevent compression to below 100 fs. However, the strong group velocity dispersion impli…
Generation of high-repetition-rate, femtosecond, soliton pulse trains through dual-wavelength pumping of a dispersion-decreasing fiber is studied numerically. The achievable shortest pulse width is found to be limited by third-order dispersion that has a significant effect on the pulse-compression dynamics. The output wavelength is red shifted because of intrapulse Raman scattering and depends heavily on third-order dispersion, whose positive values lead to the most red shifted solitons (>25% of the input pump center wavelength). The proposed scheme allows the generation of ultrashort pulse tr…
Dissipative Kerr solitons (DKSs) in the high-Q micro-resonator corresponds to self-organized short pulse in time domain via double balance between dispersion and Kerr nonlinearity, as well as cavity loss and parametric gain. In this paper, we first experimentally demonstrate deterministic generation and switching of DKSs in a thermally controlled micro-ring resonator based on high-index doped silica glass platform. In our scheme, an auxiliary laser is introduced to timely balance the intra-cavity heat fluctuation. By decreasing the operating temperature through a thermo-electric cooler, solito…
One of the challenges of the modern photonics is to develop all-optical devices enabling increased speed and energy efficiency for transmitting and processing information on an optical chip. It is believed that the recently suggested Parity-Time (PT) symmetric photonic systems with alternating regions of gain and loss can bring novel functionalities. In such systems, losses are as important as gain and, depending on the structural parameters, gain compensates losses. Generally, PT systems demonstrate nontrivial non-conservative wave interactions and phase transitions, which can be employed for…
We use the generalized Lugiato-Lefever model to investigate the phenomenon of Kerr optical frequency comb generation when group-velocity dispersion is null. In that case, the first dispersion term that plays a leading role is third-order dispersion. We show that this term is sufficient to allow for the existence of both bright and dark solitons. We identify the areas in the parameter space where both kind of solitons can be excited inside the resonator. We also unveil a phenomenon of hysteretic switching between these two types of solitons when the power of the pump laser is cyclically varied.
Single-shot real-time characterization of optical waveforms with sub-picosecond resolution is essential for investigating various ultrafast optical dynamics. However, the finite temporal recording length of current techniques hinders comprehensive understanding of many intriguing ultrafast optical phenomena that evolve over a time scale much longer than their fine temporal details. Inspired by the space-time duality and by stitching of multiple microscopic images to achieve a larger field of view in the spatial domain, here a panoramic-reconstruction temporal imaging (PARTI) system is devised …
We address azimuthally modulated Bessel optical lattices imprinted in focusing cubic Kerr-type nonlinear media, and reveal that such lattices support different types of stable solitons, whose complexity increases with growth of lattice order. We reveal that the azimuthally modulated lattices cause single solitons launched tangentially to the guiding rings to jump along consecutive sites of the optical lattice. The position of the output channel can be varied by small changes of the launching angle.
We report on the demonstration of a femtosecond all-optical modulator providing, without nonlinearity and therefore at arbitrarily low intensity, ultrafast light-by-light control. The device engages the coherent interaction of optical waves on a metamaterial nanostructure only 30 nm thick to efficiently control absorption of near-infrared (750-1040 nm) femtosecond pulses, providing switching contrast ratios approaching 3:1 with a modulation bandwidth in excess of 2 THz. The functional paradigm illustrated here opens the path to a family of novel meta-devices for ultra-fast optical data process…
We demonstrate a simple method for controlling nonlinear switching of discrete solitons in arrays of weakly coupled optical waveguides, for both cubic and uadratic nonlinearities. Based on the effective discrete nonlinear equations describing the waveguide arrays in the tight-binding approximation, we develop the concept of the array engineering by means of a step-like variation of the waveguide coupling. We demonstrate the digitized switching of a narrow input beam for up to eleven neighboring waveguides, in the case of the cubic nonlinearity, and up to ten waveguides, in the case of quadrati…
We experimentally investigate a nonlinear switching mechanism in a dual-core highly nonlinear optical fiber. We focus the input beam of femtosecond pulses on one core only, to identify transitions between inter-core oscillations, self-trapping in the cross core, and self-trapping of the pulse in the straight core. A model based in the system of coupled nonlinear Schrodinger equations provides surprisingly good agreement with the experimental findings.
Dissipative Kerr soliton microcombs in microresonators has enabled fundamental advances in chip scale precision metrology, communication, spectroscopy, and parallel signal processing. Here we demonstrate polarization diverse soliton transitions and deterministic switching dynamics of a self stabilized microcomb in a strongly coupled dispersion-managed microresonator driven with a single pump laser. The switching dynamics are induced by the differential thermorefractivity between coupled transverse magnetic and transverse electric supermodes during the forward backward pump detunings. The achie…
We demonstrate ultrafast soliton-based nonlinear balancing of dual-core asymmetry in highly nonlinear photonic crystal fiber at sub-nanojoule pulse energy level. The effect of fiber asymmetry was studied experimentally by selective excitation and monitoring of individual fiber cores at different wavelengths between 1500 nm and 1800 nm. Higher energy transfer rate to non-excited core was observed in the case of fast core excitation due to nonlinear asymmetry balancing of temporal solitons, which was confirmed by the dedicated numerical simulations based on the coupled generalized nonlinear Schr…
A systematic numerical study of ultrafast nonlinear directional coupler performance based on soliton self-trapping in a novel type of dual-core optical fibre is presented. The considered highly nonlinear fibre structure is composed of a real, intentionally developed soft glass-pair with high refractive index contrast at the level of 0.4 in the near infrared. Nonlinear propagation of picojoule level femtosecond pulses was studied numerically with the aim to identify the best switching performance in input parameter space of 1400 - 1800 nm in terms of excitation wavelengths, and of 75 - 150 fs i…
We address the existence and properties of optical solitons excited in thermal nonlinear media with a transverse refractive index gradient. We show that in such a geometry one can generate controllable switching from surface soliton propagating near the sample edges to bulk solitons. Beam steering associated to the different soliton output locations can be achieved by varying the input light intensity.
When a laser cavity supports the propagation of several ultrashort pulses, these pulses interact and can form compact bound states called soliton molecules. Soliton molecules are fascinating objects of nonlinear science, which present striking analogies with their matter molecules counterparts. The soliton pair, composed of two identical pulses, constitutes the chief soliton molecule of fundamental interest. The relative timing and phase between the two propagating pulses are the most salient internal degrees of freedom of the soliton molecule. These two internal degrees of freedom allow self-…
We develop a method for transmission stabilization and robust dynamic switching for colliding optical soliton sequences in broadband waveguide systems with nonlinear gain and loss. The method is based on employing hybrid waveguides, consisting of spans with linear gain and cubic loss, and spans with linear loss, cubic gain, and quintic loss. We show that amplitude dynamics is described by a hybrid Lotka-Volterra (LV) model, and use the model to determine the physical parameter values required for enhanced transmission stabilization and switching. Numerical simulations with the coupled nonlinea…
Solitons are shape preserving waveforms that are ubiquitous across nonlinear dynamical systems and fall into two separate classes, that of bright solitons, formed in the anomalous group velocity dispersion regime, and `dark solitons' in the normal dispersion regime. Both types of soliton have been observed in BEC, hydrodynamics, polaritons, and mode locked lasers, but have been particularly relevant to the generation of chipscale microresonator-based frequency combs (microcombs), used in numerous system level applications in timing, spectroscopy, and communications. For microcombs, both bright…
We study propagation and switching of slow-light pulses in nonlinear couplers with phase-shifted Bragg gratings. We demonstrate that power-controlled nonlinear self-action of light can be used to compensate dispersion-induced broadening of pulses through the formation of gap solitons, to control pulse switching in the coupler, and to tune the propagation velocity.
The well-known (1+1D) nonlinear Schrödinger equation (NSE) governs the propagation of narrow-band pulses in optical fibers and others one-dimensional structures. For exploration the evolution of broad-band optical pulses (femtosecond and attosecond) it is necessary to use the more general nonlinear amplitude equation (GNAE) which differs from NSE with two additional non-paraxial terms. That is way, it is important to make clear the difference between the solutions of these two equations. We found a new analytical soliton solution of GNAE and compare it with the well-known NSE one. It is shown …
Femtosecond lasers interacting with Kerr nonlinear optical materials, propagate in form of filaments due to the balance of beam diffraction by self-focusing induced by the Kerr nonlinearity. Femtosecond laser filamentation is a universal phenomenon that belongs to a general class of processes proper to ultrashort lasers processing systems, associated with the competition between nonlinearity and dispersion also known to promote optical solitons. The present work considers a model describing femtosecond laser inscriptions in a transparent medium with Kerr nonlinearity. Upon inscription, the las…
Dissipation of electromagnetic energy through absorption is a fundamental process that underpins phenomena ranging from photovoltaics to photography, analytical spectroscopy, photosynthesis, and human vision. Absorption is also a dynamic process that depends on the duration of the optical illumination. Here we report on the resonant plasmonic absorption of a nanostructured metamaterial and the non-resonant absorption of an unstructured gold film at different optical pulse durations. By examining the absorption in travelling and standing waves, we observe a plasmonic relaxation time of 11 fs as…
