We study the existence and the number of $k$-dominating independent sets in certain graph families. While the case $k=1$ namely the case of maximal independent sets - which is originated from Erdős and Moser - is widely investigated, much less is known in general. In this paper we settle the question for trees and prove that the maximum number of $k$-dominating independent sets in $n$-vertex graphs is between $c_k\cdot\sqrt[2k]{2}^n$ and $c_k'\cdot\sqrt[k+1]{2}^n$ if $k\geq 2$, moreover the maximum number of $2$-dominating independent sets in $n$-vertex graphs is between $c\cdot 1.22^n$ and $c'\cdot1.246^n$. Graph constructions containing a large number of $k$-dominating independent sets are coming from product graphs, complete bipartite graphs and with finite geometries. The product graph construction is associated with the number of certain MDS codes.
Given a connected graph with domination (or total domination) number γ>=2, we ask for the maximum number m_γand m_{γ,T} of dominating and total dominating sets of size γ. An exact answer is provided for γ=2and lower bounds are given for γ>=3.
A graph $G$ is a $D\!D_2$-graph if it has a pair $(D,D_2)$ of disjoint sets of vertices of $G$ such that $D$ is a dominating set and $D_2$ is a 2-dominating set of $G$. We provide several characterizations and hardness results concerning $D\!D_2$-graphs.
A dominating set $S$ of a graph is a metric-locating-dominating set if each vertex of the graph is uniquely distinguished by its distances from the elements of $S$, and the minimum cardinality of such a set is called the metric-location-domination number. In this paper, we undertake a study that, in general graphs and specific families, relates metric-locating-dominating sets to other special sets: resolving sets, dominating sets, locating-dominating sets and doubly resolving sets. We first characterize classes of trees according to certain relationships between their metric-location-dominatio…
A graph $G$ is a DTDP-graph if it has a pair $(D,T)$ of disjoint sets of vertices of $G$ such that $D$ is a dominating set and $T$ is a total dominating set of $G$. Such graphs were studied in a number of research papers. In this paper we study further properties of DTDP-graphs and, in particular, we characterize minimal DTDP-gaphs without loops.
Fricke, Hedetniemi, Hedetniemi, and Hutson asked whether every tree with domination number $γ$ has at most $2^γ$ minimum dominating sets. Bien gave a counterexample, which allows to construct forests with domination number $γ$ and $2.0598^γ$ minimum dominating sets. We show that every forest with domination number $γ$ has at most $2.4606^γ$ minimum dominating sets, and that every tree with independence number $α$ has at most $2^{α-1}+1$ maximum independent sets.
A hypergraph is a generalization of a graph where edges can connect any number of vertices. In this paper, we extend the study of locating-dominating sets to hypergraphs. Along with some basic results, sharp bounds for the location-domination number of hypergraphs in general and exact values with specified conditions are investigated. Moreover, locating-dominating sets in some specific hypergraphs are found.
In this paper, we investigate the problem of covering the vertices of a graph associated to a finite vector space as introduced by Das \cite{Das}, such that we can uniquely identify any vertex by examining the vertices that cover it. We use locating-dominating sets and identifying codes, which are closely related concepts for this purpose. These sets consist of a dominating set of graph such that every vertex is uniquely identified by its neighborhood within the dominating sets. We find the location-domination number and the identifying number of the graph and study the exchange property for l…
We describe small dominating sets of the incidence graphs of finite projective planes by establishing a stability result which shows that dominating sets are strongly related to blocking and covering sets. Our main result states that if a dominating set in a projective plane of order $q>81$ is smaller than $2q+2[\sqrt{q}]+2$ (i.e., twice the size of a Baer subplane), then it contains either all but possibly one points of a line or all but possibly one lines through a point. Furthermore, we completely characterize dominating sets of size at most $2q+\sqrt{q}+1$. In Desarguesian planes, we could…
Let $G=(V,E)$ be a simple graph. A dominating set of $G$ is a subset $D\subseteq V$ such that every vertex not in $D$ is adjacent to at least one vertex in $D$. The cardinality of a smallest dominating set of $G$, denoted by $γ(G)$, is the domination number of $G$. A dominating set $D$ is an accurate dominating set of $G$, if no $|D|$-element subset of $V\setminus D$ is a dominating set of $G$. The accurate domination number, $γ_a(G)$, is the cardinality of a smallest accurate dominating set $D$. In this paper, after presenting preliminaries, we count the number of accurate dominating sets of …
Let $d,n$ be positive integers such that $d<n$, and let $X^d_n$ be a Cayley graph generated by a transposition tree of diameter $d$. It is known that every $X^d_n$ with $d<3$ splits into efficient dominating sets. The main result of this paper is that $X^3_n$ does not have efficient dominating sets.
This papers focuses on the average order of dominating sets of a graph. We find the extremal graphs for the maximum and minimum value over all graphs on $n$ vertices, while for trees we prove that the star minimizes the average order of dominating sets. We prove the average order of dominating sets in graphs without isolated vertices is at most $3n/4$, but provide evidence that the actual upper bound is $2n/3$. Finally, we show that the normalized average, while dense in $[1/2,1]$, tends to $\frac{1}{2}$ for almost all graphs.
A set $D$ of vertices in an isolate-free graph $G$ is a semitotal dominating set of $G$ if $D$ is a dominating set of $G$ and every vertex in $D$ is within distance $2$ from another vertex of $D$.The semitotal domination number of $G$ is the minimum cardinality of a semitotal dominating set of $G$ and is denoted by $γ_{t2}(G)$. In this paper after computation of semitotal domination number of specific graphs, we count the number of this kind of dominating sets of arbitrary size in some graphs.
Let $G=(V,E)$ be a simple graph. A dominating set of $G$ is a subset $S\subseteq V$ such that every vertex not in $S$ is adjacent to at least one vertex in $S$. The cardinality of a smallest dominating set of $G$, denoted by $γ(G)$, is the domination number of $G$. A dominating set $S$ is an isolate dominating set of $G$, if the induced subgraph $G[S]$ has at least one isolated vertex. The isolate domination number, $γ_0(G)$, is the minimum cardinality of an isolate dominating set of $G$. In this paper, we count the number of isolate dominating sets of some specific graphs.
In the special case of graphs G of independence number a(G)=3 without induced chordless cycles C7 it is shown that exists connected dominating set D of vertices with number of vertices n(D)<=4. Using the concept of connected dominating sets, we defined a new invariant h(G) that does not exceed the number of Hadwiger. For the considered graphs it is shown that h(G)>=n(G)/4.
We study the structure of a minimum dominating set of $C_{2n+1}^n$, the Cartesian product of $n$ copies of the cycle of size $2n+1$, where $2n+1$ is a prime.
Let $G=(V(G),E(G))$ be a simple graph. A non-empty set $S\subseteq V (G)$ is a weakly connected dominating set in $G$, if the subgraph obtained from $G$ by removing all edges each joining any two vertices in $V (G)\setminus S$ is connected. In this paper, we consider some graphs and study the number of their weakly connected dominating sets.
Let $G=(V,E)$ be a simple graph. A dominating set of $G$ is a subset $D\subseteq V$ such that every vertex not in $D$ is adjacent to at least one vertex in $D$.The cardinality of a smallest dominating set of $G$, denoted by $γ(G)$, is the domination number of $G$.For $k \geq 1$, a $k$-fair dominating set($kFD$-set) in $G$, is a dominating set $S$ such that $|N(v) \cap D|=k$ for every vertex $ v \in V\setminus D$.A fair dominating set, in $G$ is a $kFD$-set for some integer $k\geq 1$.In this paper, after presenting preliminaries, we count the number of fair dominating sets of some specific grap…
Let $G=(V,E)$ be a simple graph without isolated vertices. A set $S\subseteq V$ is a paired-dominating set if every vertex in $V-S$ has at least one neighbor in $S$ and the subgraph induced by $S$ contains a perfect matching. In this paper, we present a linear-time algorithm to determine whether a given vertex in a block graph is contained in all its minimum paired-dominating sets.
In 1996, Matheson and Tarjan conjectured that any n-vertex triangulation with n sufficiently large has a dominating set of size at most n/4. We prove this for graphs of maximum degree 6.
A subset $D\subseteq V_G$ is a dominating set of $G$ if every vertex in $V_G-D$ has a~neighbor in $D$, while $D$ is a paired-dominating set of $G$ if $D$ is a~dominating set and the subgraph induced by $D$ contains a perfect matching. A graph $G$ is a $D\!P\!D\!P$-graph if it has a pair $(D,P)$ of disjoint sets of vertices of $G$ such that $D$ is a dominating set and $P$ is a paired-dominating set of $G$. The study of the $D\!P\!D\!P$-graphs was initiated by Southey and Henning (Cent. Eur. J. Math. 8 (2010) 459--467; J. Comb. Optim. 22 (2011) 217--234). In this paper, we provide conditions whi…
We give a shorter proof of the recurrence relation for the domination polynomial $γ(P_{n},t)$ and for the number $γ_{k}(P_{n})$ of dominating $k$-sets of the path with $n$ vertices. For every positive integers $n$ and $k,$ numbers $γ_{k}(P_{n})$ are determined solving a problem posed by S. Alikhani in CID 2015. Moreover, the numbers of dominating $k$-sets $γ_{k}(C_{n})$ of cycles and $γ_{k}(W_{n})$ of wheels with $n$ vertices are computed.
A subset $D\subseteq V_G$ is a dominating set of $G$ if every vertex in $V_G\setminus D$ has a neighbor in $D$, while $D$ is a 2-dominating set of $G$ if every vertex belonging to $V_G\setminus D$ is joined by at least two edges with a vertex or vertices in $D$. A graph $G$ is a $(2,2)$-dominated graph if it has a pair $(D,D')$ of disjoint $2$-dominating sets of vertices of $G$. In this paper we present two characterizations of minimal $(2,2)$-dominated graphs.
A set $S\subseteq V$ is a dominating set of $G$ if every vertex in $V - S$ is adjacent to at least one vertex in $S$. The domination number $γ(G)$ of $G$ equals the minimum cardinality of a dominating set $S$ in $G$; we say that such a set $S$ is a $γ$-set. A generalization of this is partial domination which was introduced in 2017 by Case, Hedetniemi, Laskar, and Lipman [3,2] . In partial domination a set $S$ is a $p$-dominating set if it dominates a proportion $p$ of the vertices in $V$. The p-domination number $γ_{p}(G)$ is the minimum cardinality of a $p$-dominating set in $G$. In this pap…
The notion of $(σ,ρ)$-dominating set generalizes many notions including dominating set, induced matching, perfect codes or independent sets. Bounds on the maximal number of such (maximal, minimal) sets were established for different $σ$ and $ρ$ and different classes of graphs. In particular, Rote showed that the number of minimal dominating sets in trees of order $n$ is at most $95^{\frac{n}{13}}$ and Golovach et Al. computed the asymptotic of the number of $(σ,ρ)$-dominating sets in paths for all $σ$ and $ρ$. Here, we propose a method to compute bounds on the number of $(σ,ρ)$-dominating sets…
We use probabilistic methods to find lower bounds on the maximum number, in a graph with domination number γ, of dominating sets of size γ. We find that we can randomly generate a graph that, w.h.p., is dominated by almost all sets of size γ. At the same time, we use a modified adjacency matrix to obtain lower bounds on the number of sets of a given size that do not dominate a graph on n vertices
Two vertices are neighbors if they are adjacent. A super dominating set is a dominating set $S$ with the additional property that every vertex in $V \setminus S$ has a neighbor in $S$ that is adjacent to no other vertex in $V \setminus S$. Moreover if every vertex in $V \setminus S$ has degree at least~$2$, then $S$ is an end super …
Counting dominating sets in a graph $G$ is closely related to the neighborhood complex of $G$. We exploit this relation to prove that the number of dominating sets $d(G)$ of a graph is determined by the number of complete bipartite subgraphs of its complement. More precisely, we state the following. Let $G$ be a simple graph of order $n$ such that its complement has exactly $a(G)$ subgraphs isomorphic to $K_{2p,2q}$ and exactly $b(G)$ subgraphs isomorphic to $K_{2p+1,2q+1}$. Then $d(G) = 2^n -1 + 2[a(G)-b(G)]$. We also show some new relations between the domination polynomial and the neighborh…
We consider some problems concerning the maximum number of (strong) dominating sets in a regular graph, and their weighted analogues. Our primary tool is Shearer's entropy lemma. These techniques extend to a reasonably broad class of graph parameters enumerating vertex colorings satisfying conditions on the multiset of colors appearing in (closed) neighborhoods. We also generalize further to enumeration problems for what we call existence homomorphisms. Here our results are substantially less complete, though we do solve some natural problems.
We survey results concerning reconfigurations of colourings and dominating sets in graphs. The vertices of the $k$-colouring graph $\mathcal{C}_{k}(G)$ of a graph $G$ correspond to the proper $k$-colourings of a graph $G$, with two $k$-colourings being adjacent whenever they differ in the colour of exactly one vertex. Similarly, the vertices of the $k$-edge-colouring graph $\mathcal{EC}_{k}(G)$ of $g$ are the proper $k$-edge-colourings of $G$, where two $k$-edge-colourings are adjacent if one can be obtained from the other by switching two colours along an edge-Kempe chain, i.e., a maximal two…

For a graph $G$, two dominating sets $D$ and $D'$ in $G$, and a non-negative integer $k$, the set $D$ is said to $k$-transform to $D'$ if there is a sequence $D_0,\ldots,D_\ell$ of dominating sets in $G$ such that $D=D_0$, $D'=D_\ell$, $|D_i|\leq k$ for every $i\in \{ 0,1,\ldots,\ell\}$, and $D_i$ arises from $D_{i-1}$ by adding or removing one vertex for every $i\in \{ 1,\ldots,\ell\}$. We prove that there is some positive constant $c$ and there are toroidal graphs $G$ of arbitrarily large order $n$, and two minimum dominating sets $D$ and $D'$ in $G$ such that $D$ $k$-transforms to $D'$ only…
An open-locating-dominating set (OLD-set) is a subset of vertices of a graph such that every vertex in the graph has at least one neighbor in the set and no two vertices in the graph have the same set of neighbors in the set. This is an analogue to the well-studied identifying code in the literature. In this paper, we prove that the optimal density of the OLD-set for the infinite triangular grid is $4/13$.
Let $G=(V,E)$ be a graph and let $r\ge 1$ be an integer. For a set $D \subseteq V$, define $N_r[x] = \{y \in V: d(x, y) \leq r\}$ and $D_r(x) = N_r[x] \cap D$, where $d(x,y)$ denotes the number of edges in any shortest path between $x$ and $y$. $D$ is known as an $r$-identifying code ($r$-locating-dominating set, respectively), if for all vertices $x\in V$ ($x \in V\backslash D$, respectively), $D_r(x)$ are all nonempty and different. In this paper, we provide complete results for $r$-identifying codes in paths and odd cycles; we also give complete results for 2-locating-dominating sets in cyc…
Let G=(V,E) be a simple graph. A set S\subset V is a dominating set of G, if every vertex in V§is adjacent to at least one vertex in S. Let {\mathcal C}_n^i be the family of dominating sets of a cycle C_n with cardinality i, and let d(C_n,i) = |{\mathcal C}_n^i. In this paper, we construct {\mathcal C}_n^i, and obtain a recursive formula for d(C_n, i). Using this recursive formula, we consider the polynomial D(C_n, x) = \sum_{i=1}^n d(C_n, i)x^i, which we call domination polynomial of cycles and obtain some properties of this polynomial.
Given a graph $G$, the $k$-dominating graph of $G$, $D_k(G)$, is defined to be the graph whose vertices correspond to the dominating sets of $G$ that have cardinality at most $k$. Two vertices in $D_k(G)$ are adjacent if and only if the corresponding dominating sets of $G$ differ by either adding or deleting a single vertex. The graph $D_k(G)$ aids in studying the reconfiguration problem for dominating sets. In particular, one dominating set can be reconfigured to another by a sequence of single vertex additions and deletions, such that the intermediate set of vertices at each step is a domina…
Let $G=(V,E)$ be a graph. A subset $D$ of $V(G)$ is called a super dominating set if for every $v \in V(G)-D$ there exists an external private neighbour of $v$ with respect to $V(G)-D.$ The minimum cardinality of a super dominating set is called the super domination number of $G$ and is denoted by $γ_{sp}(G)$. In this paper some results on the super domination number are obtained. We prove that if $T$ is a tree with at least three vertices, then $\frac{n}{2}\leqγ_{sp}(T)\leq n-s,$ where $s$ is the number of support vertices in $T$ and we characterize the extremal trees.
In this paper, we consider dominating sets $D$ and $D'$ such that $D$ and $D'$ are disjoint and there exists a perfect matching between them. Let $DD_{\textrm{m}}(G)$ denote the cardinality of smallest such sets $D, D'$ in $G$ (provided they exist, otherwise $DD_{\textrm{m}}(G) = \infty$). This concept was introduced in [Klostermeyer et al., Theory and Application of Graphs, 2017] in the context of studying a certain graph protection problem. We characterize the trees $T$ for which $DD_{\textrm{m}}(T)$ equals a certain graph protection parameter and for which $DD_{\textrm{m}}(T) = α(T)$, where…
A locating-dominating set of a graph $G$ is a dominating set of $G$ such that every vertex of $G$ outside the dominating set is uniquely identified by its neighborhood within the dominating set. The location-domination number of $G$ is the minimum cardinality of a locating-dominating set in $G$. Let $G_{1}$ and $G_{2}$ be the disjoint copies of a graph $G$ and $f:V(G_{1})\rightarrow V(G_{2})$ be a function. A functigraph $F^f_{G}$ consists of the vertex set $V(G_{1})\cup V(G_{2})$ and the edge set $E(G_{1})\cup E(G_{2})\cup \{uv:v=f(u)\}$. In this paper, we study the variation of the location-…
For a graph G, the k-total dominating graph D_{k}^{t}(G) is the graph whose vertices correspond to the total dominating sets of G that have cardinality at most k; two vertices of D_{k}^{t}(G) are adjacent if and only if the corresponding total dominating sets of G differ by either adding or deleting a single vertex. The graph D_{k}^{t}(G) is used to study the reconfiguration problem for total dominating sets: a total dominating set can be reconfigured to another by a sequence of single vertex additions and deletions, such that the intermediate sets of vertices at each step are total dominating…
The dominating graph of a graph G is a graph whose vertices correspond to the dominating sets of G and two vertices are adjacent whenever their corresponding dominating sets differ in exactly one vertex. Studying properties of dominating graph has become an increasingly interesting subject in domination theory. On the other hand, median graphs and partial cubes are two fundamental graph classes in graph theory. In this paper, we make some new connections between domination theory and the theory of median graphs and partial cubes. As the main result, we show that the following conditions are eq…
In this paper, we continue the study of locating-paired-dominating set, abbreviated LPDS, in graphs introduced by McCoy and Henning. Given a finite or infinite graph $G=(V,E)$, a set $S\subset V$ is paired-dominating if the induced subgraph $G[S]$ has a perfect matching and every vertex in $V$ is adjacent to a vertex in $S$. The other condition for LPDS requires that for any distinct vertices $u,v \in V\backslash S$, we have $N(u)\cap S\neq N(v)\cap S$. Motivated by the conjecture of Kinawi, Hussain and Niepel, we prove the minimal density of LPDS in the king grid is between $8/37$ and $2/9$, …
Let $S$ be a set of vertices of a graph $G$. Let $cl(S)$ be the set of vertices built from $S$, by iteratively applying the following propagation rule: if a vertex and all but exactly one of its neighbors are in $cl(S)$, then the remaining neighbor is also in $cl(S)$. A set $S$ is called a zero forcing set of $G$ if $cl(S)=V(G)$. The zero forcing number $Z(G)$ of $G$ is the minimum cardinality of a zero forcing set. Let $cl(N[S])$ be the set of vertices built from the closed neighborhood $N[S]$ of $S$, by iteratively applying the previous propagation rule. A set $S$ is called a power dominatin…
The dominating graph of a graph $H$ has as its vertices all dominating sets of $H$, with an edge between two dominating sets if one can be obtained from the other by the addition or deletion of a single vertex of $H$. In this paper we prove that the dominating graph of any tree has a Hamilton path. We also show how a result about binary strings leads to a proof that the dominating graph of a cycle on $n$ vertices has a Hamilton path if and only if $n\not\equiv 0 \pmod 4$.
Erdős and Moser raised the question of determining the maximum number of maximal cliques or equivalently, the maximum number of maximal independent sets in a graph on $n$ vertices. Since then there has been a lot of research along these lines. A $k$-dominating independent set is an independent set $D$ such that every vertex not contained in $D$ has at least $k$ neighbours in $D$. Let $mi_k(n)$ denote the maximum number of $k$-dominating independent sets in a graph on $n$ vertices, and let $ζ_k:=\lim_{n \rightarrow \infty} \sqrt[n]{mi_k(n)}$. Nagy initiated the study of $mi_k(n)$. In this artic…
The concept of majority domination in graphs has been defined in at least two different ways: As a function and as a set. In this work we extend the latter concept to digraphs, while the former was extended in another paper. Given a digraph $D=(V,A),$ a set $S\subseteq V$ is a \textit{majority out-dominating set} (MODS) of $D$ if $|N^+[S]|\geq \frac {n}{2}.$ The minimum cardinality of a MODS in $D$ is the {\it set majority out-domination number} $γ^+_{m}(D)$ of $D.$ In this work we introduce these concepts and prove some results about them, among which the characterization of minimal MODSs.
A locating-dominating set in a graph G is a subset of vertices representing "detectors" which can locate an "intruder" given that each detector covers its closed neighborhood and can distinguish its own location from its neighbors. We explore a fault-tolerant variant of locating-dominating sets called redundant locating-dominating sets, which can tolerate one detector malfunctioning (going offline or being removed). In particular, we characterize redundant locating-dominating sets and prove that the problem of determining the minimum cardinality of a redundant locating-dominating set is NP-com…
Given a digraph $D=(V,A)$, a set $B\subset V$ is a packing set in $D$ if there are no arcs joining vertices of $B$ and for any two vertices $x,y\in B$ the sets of in-neighbors of $x$ and $y$ are disjoint. The set $S$ is a dominating set (an open dominating set) in $D$ if every vertex not in $S$ (in $V$) has an in-neighbor in $S$. Moreover, a dominating set $S$ is called a total dominating set if the subgraph induced by $S$ has no isolated vertices. The packing sets of maximum cardinality and the (total, open) dominating sets of minimum cardinality in digraphs are studied in this article. We pr…
A (simple) hypergraph is a family H of pairwise incomparable sets of a finite set. We say that a hypergraph H is a domination hypergraph if there is at least a graph G such that the collection of minimal dominating sets of G is equal to H. Given a hypergraph, we are interested in determining if it is a domination hypergraph and, if this is not the case, we want to find domination hypergraphs in some sense close to it, the domination completions. Here we will focus on the family of hypergraphs containing all the subsets with the same cardinality, the uniform hypergraphs of maximum size. Specifi…
A set $S$ of vertices in a graph $G(V,E)$ is called a dominating set if every vertex $v\in V$ is either an element of $S$ or is adjacent to an element of $S$. A set $S$ of vertices in a graph $G(V,E)$ is called a total dominating set if every vertex $v\in V$ is adjacent to an element of $S$. The domination number of a graph $G$ denoted by $γ(G)$ is the minimum cardinality of a dominating set in $G$. Respectively the total domination number of a graph $G$ denoted by $γ_t(G)$ is the minimum cardinality of a total dominating set in $G$. An upper bound for $γ_t(G)$ which has been achieved by Cocka…
