In the uniformly hyperbolic setting it is well known that the set of all measures supported on periodic orbits is dense in the convex space of all invariant measures. In this paper we consider the converse question, in the non-uniformly hyperbolic setting: assuming that some ergodic measure converges to a convex combination of hyperbolic ergodic measures, what can we deduce about the initial measures?
To every hyperbolic measure $μ$ whose stable/unstable Oseledets splitting is dominated we associate canonically a unique class $H(μ)$ of periodic orbits for the homoclinic relation, called its \emph{intersection class}. In a dominated setting, we prove that a measure for which almost every measure in its ergodic decomposition is hyperbolic with the same index such as the dominated splitting is accumulated by ergodic measures if, and only if, almost all such ergodic measures have a common intersection class.
We provide examples which indicate the importance of the domination assumption.
This article is devoted to level-1 large deviation properties in some nonuniformly hyperbolic systems via Pesin theory. In particular, our result can be applied to the nonuniformly hyperbolic diffeomorphisms described by Katok and several other classes of diffeomorphisms derived from Anosov systems.
This article is devoted to the investigation of the topological pressure of generic points for nonuniformly hyperbolic systems via Pesin theory. For $C^1$ diffeomorphisms, we prove that the Pesin's entropy formula holds for some invariant measure supported on any topological attractor that admits a dominated splitting without mixed behavior. We also prove Shub's entropy conjecture for diffeomorphisms having such kind of splittings.
In this paper we mainly deal with an invariant (ergodic) hyperbolic measure $μ$ for a diffeomorphism $f,$ assuming that $f$ is just $C^1$ and for $μ$ a.e. $x$, the sum of Oseledec spaces corresponding to negative Lyapunov exponents (quasi-limit-)dominates the sum of Oseledec spaces corresponding to positive Lyapunov exponents at $x$. We generalize a certain of results of Pesin theory from $C^{1+α}$ to the $C^1$ system $ (f,μ)$, including a sufficient condition for existence of horseshoe, Livshitz theorem, exponential growth of periodic points, distribution of periodic points, periodic measures…
For any C1 diffeomorphism with dominated splitting we consider a nonempty set of invariant measures which describes the asymptotic statistics of Lebesgue-almost all orbits. They are the limits of convergent subsequences of averages of the Dirac delta measures supported on those orbits. We prove that the metric entropy of each of these measures is bounded from below by the sum of the Lyapunov exponents on the dominating subbundle. As a consequence, if those exponents are non negative, and if the exponents on the dominated subbundle are non positive, those measures satisfy the Pesin Entropy Form…
Let $M$ be a Riemannian, boundaryless, and compact manifold, with $\dim M\geq 2$ and let $f$ be a $C^{1+}$ diffeomorphism. We show that there is a hyperbolic SRB measure if and only if there exists an unstable leaf with a subset of positive leaf volume of hyperbolic points which return to some Pesin set with positive frequency. This answers a question of Pesin.
We consider C1 Anosov diffeomorphisms on a compact Riemannian manifold. We define the weak pseudo-physical measures, which include the physical measures when these latter exist. We prove that ergodic weak pseudo-physical measures do exist, and that the set of invariant probability measures that satisfy Pesin's Entropy Formula is the weak*-closed convex hull of the ergodic weak pseudo-physical measures. In brief, we give in the C1-scenario of uniform hyperbolicity, a characterization of Pesin's Entropy Formula in terms of physical-like properties.
We prove existence of equilibrium states with special properties for a class of distance expanding local homeomorphisms on compact metric spaces and continuous potentials. Moreover, we formulate a C$^1$ generalization of Pesin's Entropy Formula: all ergodic weak-SRB-like measures satisfy Pesin's Entropy Formula for $C^1$ non-uniformly expanding maps. We show that for weak-expanding maps such that $\Leb$-a.e $x$ has positive frequency of hyperbolic times, then all the necessarily existing ergodic weak-SRB-like measures satisfy Pesin's Entropy Formula and are equilibrium states for the potential…
We show that for every compact 3-manifold $M$ there exists an open subset of $\diff ^1(M)$ in which every generic diffeomorphism admits uncountably many ergodic probability measures which are hyperbolic while their supports are disjoint and admit a basis of attracting neighborhoods and a basis of repelling neighborhoods. As a consequence, the points in the support of these measures have no stable and no unstable manifolds. This contrasts with the higher regularity case, where Pesin theory gives us the stable and the unstable manifolds with complementary dimensions at almost every point. We als…
Let $M$ be a compact manifold and $f:\,M\to M$ be a $C^1$ diffeomorphism on $M$. If $μ$ is an $f$-invariant probability measure which is absolutely continuous relative to Lebesgue measure and for $μ$ $a.\,\,e.\,\,x\in M,$ there is a dominated splitting $T_{orb(x)}M=E\oplus F$ on its orbit $orb(x)$, then we give an estimation through Lyapunov characteristic exponents from below in Pesin's entropy formula, i.e., the metric entropy $h_μ(f)$ satisfies $$h_μ(f)\geq\int χ(x)dμ,$$ where $χ(x)=\sum_{i=1}^{dim\,F(x)}λ_i(x)$ and $λ_1(x)\geqλ_2(x)\geq...\geqλ_{dim\,M}(x)$ are the Lyapunov exponents at $x…
It is well-known that SRB and equilibrium measures for uniformly hyperbolic flows admit a product structure in terms of measures on stable and unstable leaves with scaling properties given by the potential function. We describe a construction of these leaf measures analogous to the definition of Hausdorff measure, relying on the Pesin-Pitskel' description of topological pressure as a dimensional characteristic using Bowen balls. These leaf measures were constructed for discrete-time systems by the author, Ya. Pesin, and A. Zelerowicz. In the continuous-time setting here, the description of the…
In this work we study strong spectral properties of Ruelle transfer operators related to a large family of Gibbs measures for contact Anosov flows. The ultimate aim is to establish exponential decay of correlations for Hölder observables with respect to a very general class of Gibbs measures. The approach invented in 1997 by Dolgopyat \cite{D1} and further developed in \cite{St2} is substantially refined here, allowing to deal with much more general situations than before, although we still restrict ourselves to the uniformly hyperbolic case. A rather general procedure is established which pro…
In this paper, we study the limit measures of the empirical measures of Lebesgue almost every point in the basin of a partially hyperbolic attractor. They are strongly related to a notion named Gibbs u-state, which can be defined in a large class of diffeomorphisms with less regularity and which is the same as Pesin-Sinai's notion for partially hyperbolic attractors of $C^{1+α}$ diffeomorphisms. In particular, we prove that for partially hyperbolic $C^{1+α}$ diffeomorphisms with one-dimensional center, and for Lebesgue almost every point: (1) the center Lyapunov exponent is well defined, but (…
We study the ergodic theory of non-conservative C^1-generic diffeomorphisms. First, we show that homoclinic classes of arbitrary diffeomorphisms exhibit ergodic measures whose supports coincide with the homoclinic class. Second, we show that generic (for the weak topology) ergodic measures of C^1-generic diffeomorphisms are nonuniformly hyperbolic: they exhibit no zero Lyapunov exponents. Third, we extend a theorem by Sigmund on hyperbolic basic sets: every isolated transitive set L of any C^1-generic diffeomorphism f exhibits many ergodic hyperbolic measures whose supports coincide with the w…
In this article we will describe a new construction for Gibbs measures for hyperbolic attractors generalizing the original construction of Sinai, Bowen and Ruelle of SRB measures. The classical construction of the SRB measure is based on pushing forward the normalized volume on a piece of unstable manifold. By modifying the density at each step appropriately we show that the resulting measure is a prescribed Gibbs measure. This contrasts with, and complements, the construction of Climenhaga-Pesin-Zelerowicz who replace the volume on the unstable manifold by a fixed reference measure. Moreover,…
We show that for any $C^1$ partially hyperbolic diffeomorphism, there is a full volume subset, such that any Cesaro limit of any point in this subset satisfies the Pesin formula for partial entropy. This result has several important applications. First we show that for any $C^{1+}$ partially hyperbolic diffeomorphism with one dimensional center, there is a full volume subset, such that every point in this set belongs to either the basin of a physical measure with non-vanishing center exponent, or the center exponent of any limit of the sequence $\frac1n\sum_{i=0}^{n-1}δ_{f^i(x)}$ is vanishing.…
We prove a rigidity theorem for dominated Hölder cocycles with values on diffeomorphism groups of a compact manifold over hyperbolic homeomorphisms. More precisely, we show that if two such cocycles have equal periodic data, then they are cohomologous.
In this paper we obtain two criteria of stable ergodicity outside the partially hyperbolic scenario. In both criteria, we use a weak form of hyperbolicity called chain-hyperbolicity. It is obtained one criterion for diffeomorphisms with dominated splitting and one criterion for weakly partially hyperbolic diffeomorphisms. As an application of one of these criteria, we obtain the $C^1$-density of stable ergodicity inside a certain class of weakly partially hyperbolic diffeomorphisms.
Let $f:M\rightarrow M$ be a $C^1$ diffeomorphism with a dominated splitting on a compact Riemanian manifold $M$ without boundary. We state and prove several sufficient conditions for the topological entropy of $f$ to be positive. The conditions deal with the dynamical behaviour of the (non-necessarily invariant) Lebesgue measure. In particular, if the Lebesgue measure is $δ$-recurrent then the entropy of $f$ is positive. We give counterexamples showing that these sufficient conditions are not necessary. Finally, in the case of partially hyperbolic diffeomorphisms, we give a positive lower boun…
Recent works related to Palis conjecture of J. Yang, S. Crovisier, M. Sambarino and D. Yang showed that any aperiodic class of a $C^1$-generic diffeomorphism far away from homoclinic bifurcations (or homoclinic tangencies) is partially hyperbolic. We show in this paper that, generically, a non-trivial dominated splitting implies partial hyperbolicity for an aperiodic class if it is Lyapunov stable. More precisely, for $C^1$-generic diffeomorphisms, if a Lyapunov stable aperiodic class has a non-trivial dominated splitting $E\oplus F$, then one of the two bundles is hyperbolic (either $E$ is co…
We show that diffeomorphisms with a dominated splitting of the form $E^s\oplus E^c\oplus E^u$, where $E^c$ is a nonhyperbolic central bundle that splits in a dominated way into 1-dimensional subbundles, are entropy-expansive. In particular, they have a principal symbolic extension and equilibrium states.
We prove that the statistical properties of random perturbations of a nonuniformly hyperbolic diffeomorphism are described by a finite number of stationary measures. We also give necessary and sufficient conditions for the stochastic stability of such dynamical systems. We show that a certain $C^2$-open class of nonuniformly hyperbolic diffeomorphisms introduced in [Alves, J; Bonatti, C. and Viana, V., SRB measures for partially hyperbolic systems with mostly expanding central direction, Invent. Math., 140 (2000), 351-398] are stochastically stable. Our setting encompasses that of partially hy…
We show that the metric entropy of a $C^1$ diffeomorphism with a dominated splitting and the dominating bundle uniformly expanding is bounded from above by the integrated volume growth of the dominating (expanding) bundle plus the maximal Lyapunov exponent from the dominated bundle multiplied by its dimension. We also discuss different types of volume growth that can be associated with an expanding foliation and relationships between them, specially when there exists a closed form non-degenerate on the foliation. Some consequences for partially hyperbolic diffeomorphisms are presented.
We consider the structure of substantially dissipative complex Hénon maps admitting a dominated splitting on the Julia set. The dominated splitting assumption corresponds to the one-dimensional assumption that there are no critical points on the Julia set. Indeed, we prove the corresponding description of the Fatou set, namely that it consists of only finitely many components, each either attracting or parabolic periodic. In particular there are no rotation domains, and no wandering components. Moreover, we show that $J = J^\star$ and the dynamics on $J$ is hyperbolic away from parabolic cycle…
This paper first studies the measure theoretic pressure of measures that are not necessarily ergodic. We define the measure theoretic pressure of an invariant measure (not necessarily ergodic) via the Carathéodory-Pesin structure described in \cite{Pes97}, and show that this quantity is equal to the essential supremum of the free energy of the measures in an ergodic decomposition. To the best of our knowledge, this formula is new even for entropy. Meanwhile, we define the measure theoretic pressure in another way by using separated sets, it is showed that this quantity is exactly the free ener…
Let Diff^1(M) be the set of all C^1-diffeomorphisms f : M \rightarrow M, where M is a compact boundaryless d-dimensional manifold, d \geq 2. We prove that there is a residual subset R of Diff^1(M) such that if f \in R and if H(p) is the homoclinic class associated with a hyperbolic periodic point p, then either H(p) admits a dominated splitting of the form E\oplusF1 \oplus...\oplusFk \oplusG, where Fi is not hyperbolic and one-dimensional, or f|H(p) has no symbolic extensions.
We give extensions of Katok's horseshoe constructions, comment on related results, and provide a self-contained proof. We consider either a $C^{1+α}$ diffeomorphism preserving a hyperbolic measure or a $C^1$ diffeomorphism preserving a hyperbolic measure whose support admits a dominated splitting.
We consider diffeomorphisms of a compact manifold with a dominated splitting which is hyperbolic except for a "small" subset of points (Hausdorff dimension smaller than one, e.g. a denumerable subset) and prove the existence of physical measures and their stochastical stability. The physical measures are obtained as zero-noise limits which are shown to satisfy the Entropy Formula.
In this paper we consider a non-atomic invariant hyperbolic measure $μ$ of a $C^1$ diffeomorphsim on a compact manifold, in whose Oseledec splitting the stable bundle dominates the unstable bundle on $μ$ a.e. points. We show an \textit{exponentially} shadowing and an \textit{exponentially} closing lemma, and as applications we show two classical results. One is that there exists a hyperbolic periodic point such that the closure of its unstable manifold has \textit{positive} measure and it has a homoclinic point from which one can deduce a horseshoe. Moreover, such hyperbolic periodic points ar…
Let $f$ be a $C^1$-diffeomorphism and $μ$ be a hyperbolic ergodic $f$-invariant Borel probability measure with positive measure-theoretic entropy. Assume that the Oseledec splitting $$T_xM=E_1(x) \oplus\cdots\oplus E_s(x) \oplus E_{s+1}(x) \oplus\cdots\oplus E_l(x) $$ is dominated on the Oseledec basin $Γ$. We give extensions of Katok's Horseshoes construction. Moreover there is a dominated splitting corresponding to Oseledec subspace on horseshoes.
In this paper, we provide a technique result on the existence of Gibbs cu-states for diffeomorphisms with dominated splittings. More precisely, for given $C^2$ diffeomorphim $f$ with dominated splitting $T_ΛM = E\oplus F$ on an attractor $Λ$, by considering some suitable random perturbation of $f$, we show that for any zero noise limit of ergodic stationary measures, if it has positive integrable Lyapunov exponents along invariant sub-bundle $E$, then its ergodic components contain Gibbs cu-states associated to $E$. With this technique, we show the existence of SRB measures and physical measur…
Let $f$ be a $C^r$$(r>1)$ diffeomorphism of a compact Riemannian manifold $M$, preserving an ergodic hyperbolic measure $μ$ with positive entropy, and let $\mathcal{A}$ be a Hölder continuous cocycle of injective bounded linear operators acting on a Banach space $X$. We prove that there is a sequence of horseshoes for $f$ and dominated splittings for $\mathcal{A}$ on the horseshoes, such that not only the measure theoretic entropy of $f$ but also the Lyapunov exponents of $\mathcal{A}$ with respect to $μ$ can be approximated by the topological entropy of $f$ and the Lyapunov exponents of $\mat…
We consider Holder continuous cocycles over hyperbolic dynamical systems with values in the group of invertible bounded linear operators on a Banach space. We show that two fiber bunched cocycles are Holder continuously cohomologous if and only if they have Holder conjugate periodic data. The fiber bunching condition means that non-conformality of the cocycle is dominated by the expansion and contraction in the base system. We show that this condition can be established based on the periodic data of a cocycle. We also establish Holder continuity of a measurable conjugacy between a fiber bunche…
We study generic diffeomorphisms with a homoclinc class with non empty interior and in particular those admitting a codimension one dominated splitting. We prove that if in the finest dominated splitting the extreme subbundles are one dimensional then the diffeomorphism is partially hyperbolic and from this we deduce that the diffeomorphism is transitive.
In this paper we study structurally stable homoclinic classes. In a natural way, the structural stability for an individual homoclinic class is defined through the continuation of periodic points. Since the homoclinic classes is not innately locally maximal, it is hard to answer whether structurally stable homoclinic classes are hyperbolic. In this article, we make some progress on this question. We prove that if a homoclinic class is structurally stable, then it admits a dominated splitting. Moreover we prove that codimension one structurally stable classes are hyperbolic. Also, if the diffeo…
Let $f:M\to M$ be a $C^1$ map of a compact manifold $M$, with dimension at least $2$, admitting some point whose future trajectory has only negative Lyapunov exponents. Then this trajectory converges to a periodic sink. We need only assume that $Df$ is never the null map at any point (in particular, we need no extra smoothness assumption on $Df$), encompassing a wide class of possible critical behavior. Similarly, a trajectory having only positive Lyapunov exponents for a $C^1$ diffeomorphism is itself a periodic repeller (source). Analogously for a $C^1$ open and dense subset of vector field …
In this paper we revisit uniformly hyperbolic basic sets and the domination of Oseledets splittings at periodic points. We prove that periodic points with simple Lyapunov spectrum are dense in non-trivial basic pieces of Cr-residual diffeomorphisms on three-dimensional manifolds (r >= 1). In the case of the C1-topology we can prove that either all periodic points of a hyperbolic basic piece for a diffeomorphism f have simple spectrum C1- robustly (in which case f has a finest dominated splitting into one-dimensional sub-bundles and all Lyapunov exponent functions of f are continuous in the wea…
We consider Holder continuous fiber bunched GL(d,R)-valued cocycles over an Anosov diffeomorphism. We show that two such cocycles are Holder continuously cohomologous if they have equal periodic data, and prove a result for cocycles with conjugate periodic data. We obtain a corollary for cohomology between any constant cocycle and its small perturbation. The fiber bunching condition means that non-conformality of the cocycle is dominated by the expansion and contraction in the base. We show that this condition can be established based on the periodic data. Some important examples of cocycles c…
A classical construction due to Newhouse creates horseshoes from hyperbolic periodic orbits with large period and weak domination through local $C^1$-perturbations. Our main theorem shows that, when one works in the $C^1$ topology, the entropy of such horseshoes can be made arbitrarily close to an upper bound deriving from Ruelle's inequality, i.e., the sum of the positive Lyapunov exponents (or the same for the inverse diffeomorphism, whichever is smaller). Adapting classical techniques, we use perturbations that are local and can be chosen to preserve volume or symplectic form or a homoclini…
We study a class of asymptotically entropy-expansive $C^1$ diffeomorphisms with dominated splitting on a compact manifold $M$, that satisfy the specification property. This class includes, in particular, transitive Anosov diffeomorphisms and time-one maps of transitive Anosov flows. We consider the nonempty set of physical-like measures that attracts the empirical probabilities (i.e. the time averages) of Lebesgue-almost all the orbits. We define the set $I_f \cap Γ_f \subset M$ of irregular points without physical-like behaviour. We prove that, if not all the invariant measures of $f$ satisfy…
