The structure of $1/2^{\pm}$ states in $^{13}$C up to around the $3α+n$ threshold ($E_x = 12.3$~MeV) is investigated with a full four-body $3α+n$ orthogonality condition model (OCM) calculation, where the $3α$ OCM, the model space of which is the subspace of the $3α+n$ model, describes well the structure of the low-lying states of $^{12}$C including the $2^{+}_2$, $0^{+}_3$, and $0^{+}_4$ states, which have been recently observed above the Hoyle state ($0^+_2$). A full spectrum up to the $1/2^{-}_5$ ($1/2^{+}_3$) state is reproduced consistently with the lowest five $1/2^{-}$ (three $1/2^{+}$) states of experimental spectrum. It is shown that the $1/2^{-}_2$ and $1/2^{-}_3$ states are characterized by the dominant cluster configurations of $^{9}$Be($3/2^-$,$1/2^-$)+$α$, while the ground state $1/2^-_1$ has a shell-model-like structure. The observed monopole transition strengths to the $1/2^{-}_{2,3}$ states are consistently reproduced for the first time. These results indicate that the excited $1/2^-$ states have cluster structures. They are compared to those by the previous work with the shell model. On the other hand, the $1/2^{+}_{1}$ state is found to have a loosely bound neutron structure in which the extra neutron moves around $^{12}$C(g.s) core with $1S$ orbit, reflecting the fact that this state appears by $1.9$ MeV just below the $^{12}$C(g.s)+$n$ threshold, while the $1/2^{+}_{2}$ and $1/2^{+}_{3}$ states are characterized by $^{9}$Be+$α$ structures. We found that the $1/2^+_5$ state located above the $3α+n$ threshold is the Hoyle analogue state in $^{13}$C, the wave function of which is described by product states of constituent clusters, $(0S)^3_α(S)_n$, with the probability of $52$ %.
The properties of the alpha+28Si and 16O+16O molecular states which are embedded in the excited states of 32S and can have an impact on the stellar reactions are investigated using the antisymmetrized molecular dynamics. From the analysis of the cluster spectroscopic factors, the candidates of alpha+28Si and 16O+16O molecular states are identified close to and above the cluster threshold energies. The calculated properties of the alpha+28Si molecular states are consistent with those reported by the alpha+28Siresonant scattering experiments. On the other hand, the 16O+16O molecular state, which…
We investigate the effect of monopole and quadrupole modes on the elastic alpha-alpha resonance structure of $^{8}$Be. To this end we make a fully microscopic coupled channels calculation with three coupled channels, using the Algebraic Model. The continuum spectrum and wave functions are analyzed in terms of the individual channels to understand the nature of the resonances. It is shown that both monopole and quadrupole modes have a non-negligible effect on the resonances in the alpha-alpha continuum.
We present an ab-initio study of the isoscalar monopole excitations of 4He using different realistic nuclear interactions, including modern effective field theory potentials. In particular we concentrate on the transition form factor $F_{\cal M}$ to the narrow $0^+$ resonance close to threshold. F_M exhibits a strong potential model dependence, and can serve as a kind of prism to distinguish among different nuclear force models. Comparing to the measurements obtained from inelastic electron scattering off 4He, one finds that the state-of-the-art theoretical transition form factors are at varia…
Isoscalar monopole strength function in $^{16}$O up to $E_{x}\simeq40$ MeV is discussed. We found that the fine structures at the low energy region up to $E_{x} \simeq 16$ MeV in the experimental monopole strength function obtained by the $^{16}$O$(α,α^{\prime})$ reaction can be rather satisfactorily reproduced within the framework of the $4α$ cluster model, while the gross three bump structures observed at the higher energy region ($16 \lesssim E_{x} \lesssim 40$ MeV) look likely to be approximately reconciled by the mean-field calculations such as RPA and QRPA. In this paper, it is emphasize…
The particle-hole dispersive optical model, developed recently, is applied to describe properties of high-energy isoscalar monopole excitations in medium-heavy mass spherical nuclei. We consider, in particular, the double transition density averaged over the energy of the isoscalar monopole excitations in $^{208}$Pb in a wide energy interval, which includes the isoscalar giant monopole resonance and its overtone. The energy-averaged strength functions of these resonances are also analyzed. Possibilities for using the mentioned transition density to description of inelastic $α$-scattering are d…
On the basis of an extended antisymmetrized molecular dynamics calculation, we study the cluster structure and the of the 0+ and 1- states of 18O. We discuss that several different kinds of cluster states appear in the excitation spectrum, and their monopole and dipole transitions are interesting fingerprints of unique cluster structure. We show that the monopole/dipole transitions are enhanced for the 14C+alpha cluster states, while they are hindered for the molecular-orbit state. We also point out that the ratio of the electric and isoscalar monopole transition strengths gives a good hint fo…
We discuss strength of monopole excitation of the ground state to cluster states in light nuclei. We clarify that the monopole excitation to cluster states is in general strong as to be comparable with the single particle strength and shares an appreciable portion of the sum rule value in spite of large difference of the structure between the cluster state and the shell-model-like ground state. We argue that the essential reasons of the large strength are twofold. One is the fact that the clustering degree of freedom is possessed even by simple shell model wave functions. The detailed feature …
For studying the collective pairing excitations of nuclei, the two-nucleon transfer reactions in superfluid nuclei (the pairing gap of the ground state is not zero), in particular, the (p,t) reaction, are of the greatest interest. A simple model of monopole pairing excitations in superfluid nuclei on the basis of the semiclassical time-dependent Hartree-Fock-Bogolyubov theory in the limit of small amplitudes is considered. Using the anomalous density response function, the monopole pairing mode in the energy region of double pairing gap and the variation of the pairing gap associated with this…
In this article, we derive a quantal self-consistent time-reversal invariant parameter-free cranking model for isoscalar monopole excitation coupled to intrinsic motion in even-even light nuclei. The model uses a wavefunction that is a product of monopole and intrinsic wavefunctions and a constrained variational method to derive, from a many-particle Schrodinger equation, a pair of coupled self-consistent cranking-type Schrodinger equations for the monopole and intrinsic systems. The monopole co-ordinate used is the trace of the quadrupole tensor and hence describes the overall deformation of …
Based on the Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov solutions in large deformed coordinate spaces, the finite amplitude method for quasiparticle random phase approximation (FAM-QRPA) has been implemented, providing a suitable approach to probe collective excitations of weakly-bound nuclei embedded in the continuum. The monopole excitation modes in Magnesium isotopes up to the neutron drip line have been studied with the FAM-QRPA framework on both the coordinate-space and harmonic oscillator basis methods. Enhanced soft monopole strengths and collectivity as a result of weak-binding effects have been unambigu…
We compute the spectra of exotic pentaquarks and monopole excitations of the low--lying ${1/2}^+$ and ${3/2}^+$ baryons in a chiral soliton model. Once the low--lying baryon properties are fit, the other states are predicted without any more adjustable parameters. This approach naturally leads to a scenario in which the mass spectrum of the next to lowest--lying $J^π={1/2}^+$ states is fairly well approximated by the ideal mixing pattern of the $\mathbf{8}\oplus\bar{\mathbf{10}}$ representation of flavor SU(3). We compare our results to predictions obtained in other pictures for pentaquarks an…
We study the Roper excitation in the $(α,α')$ reaction. We consider all processes which may be relevant in the Roper excitation region, namely, Roper excitation in the target, Roper excitation in the projectile, and double $Δ$ excitation processes. The theoretical investigation shows that the Roper excitation in the proton target mediated by an isoscalar exchange is the dominant mechanism in the process. We determine an effective isoscalar interaction by means of which the experimental cross section is well reproduced. This should be useful to make predictions in related reactions and is a fir…
Knowledge of the low-lying monopole strength in $\mathrm{^{12}C}$ $-$ the Hoyle state in particular $-$ is crucial for our understanding of both the astrophysically important $3α$ reaction and of $α$-particle clustering. Multiple theoretical models have predicted a breathing mode of the Hoyle State at $E_{x} \approx 9$ MeV, corresponding to a radial in-phase oscillation of the underlying $α$ clusters. The $\mathrm{^{12}C}(α, α^{\prime})\mathrm{^{12}C}$ and $\mathrm{^{14}C}(p, t)\mathrm{^{12}C}$ reactions were employed to populate states in $^{12}$C in order to search for this predicted breathi…
We study the isoscalar giant monopole resonance for drip-lines and super heavy nuclei in the frame work of a relativistic mean field theory with scaling approach. The well known extended Thomas-Fermi approximation in the non-linear $σ$-$ω$ model is used to estimate the giant monopole excitation energy for some selected light spherical nuclei starting from the region of proton to neutron drip-lines. The application is extended to super heavy region for Z=114 and 120, which are predicted by several models as the next proton magic number beyond Z=82. We compared the excitation energy obtained by …
Effects of the Dirac sea on the excitation energy of the giant monopole states are investigated in an analytic way within the $σ-ω$ model. The excitation energy is determined by the relativistic Landau-Migdal parameters, $F_0$ and $F_1$. Their analytic expressions are derived in the relativistic random phase approximation(RRPA) without the Dirac sea, with the Pauli blocking terms and with the full Dirac sea. It is shown that in the RRPA based on the mean field approximation the Pauli blocking terms should be included in the configuration space, according to the relativistic Landau theory. In t…
The RPA monopole strength as well as the unperturbed particle-hole excitation strength is studied, in which the strength in the continuum is properly treated without discretizing unbound particle spectra. The model is the sef-consistent Hartree-Fock calculation and the RPA Green's function method with Skyrme interactions. Numerical examples are the Ni-isotopes, especially $^{68}_{28}$Ni$_{40}$, in which an experimental observation of low-lying socalled "pigmy resonance" with an appreciable amount of monopole strength at 12.9 $\pm$ 1.0 MeV was recently reported. In the present study it is concl…
Excited states in 212Po have been populated by alpha transfer using the 208Pb(18O,14C) reaction at 85MeV beam energy and studied with the EUROBALL IV gamma multidetector array. The level scheme has been extended up to ~ 3.2 MeV excitation energy from the triple gamma coincidence data. Spin and parity values of most of the observed states have been assigned from the gamma angular distributions and gamma -gamma angular correlations. Several gamma lines with E(gamma) < 1 MeV have been found to be shifted by the Doppler effect, allowing for the measurements of the associated lifetimes by the DSAM …
Isoscalar and isovector monopole oscillations that correspond to giant resonances in spherical nuclei are described in the framework of time-dependent relativistic mean-field (RMF) theory. Excitation energies and the structure of eigenmodes are determined from a Fourier analysis of dynamical monopole moments and densities. The generator coordinate method, with generating functions that are solutions of constrained RMF calculations, is also used to calculate excitation energies and transition densities of giant monopole states. Calculations are performed with effective interactions which differ…
Background : Several recent experiments report significant low-energy isoscalar monopole strength, below the giant resonance, in various nuclei. In light $α$-conjugate nuclei, these low-energy resonances were recently interpreted as cluster vibration modes. However, the nature of these excitations in neutron-rich nuclei remain elusive. Purpose : The present work provides a systematic analysis of the low-energy monopole strength in isotopic chains, from Neon to Germanium, in order to monitor and understand its nature and conditions of emergence. Methods : We perform covariant quasiparticle rand…
Background: Two new $J^π=0^+$ states are recently observed around a few MeV above the Hoyle state (the second $0^+$ state in 12C). The characters of them are only poorly discussed in theory and are still mysterious. Purpose: I give for the first time a comprehensive understanding of the structures of the $0^+$ states by analyzing their wave functions, and discuss relationship with the Hoyle state, similarities, and differences between the states. Method: I extend a microscopic $α$-cluster model called Tohsaki-Horiuchi-Schuck-Röpke (THSR) wave function so as to incorporate $2α+α$ asymmetric con…
In this new era of radioactive beam facilities, the discovery of novel modes of excitation in nuclei far away from stability represents an area of intense research activity. In addition, these modes of excitation appear to be sensitive to the uncertain density dependence of the symmetry energy. We study the emergence, evolution, and nature of both the soft and giant isoscalar monopole modes as a function of neutron excess in three unstable Nickel isotopes: 56Ni, 68Ni, and 78Ni. The distribution of isoscalar monopole strength is computed in a relativistic random-phase approximation using severa…
We perform a systematic study of the $α$-particle excitation from its ground state $0_1^+$ to the $0_2^+$ resonance. The so-called monopole transition form factor is investigated via an electron scattering experiment in a broad $Q^2$-range (from $0.5$ to $5.0$ fm$^{-2}$). The precision of the new data dramatically superseeds that of older sets of data, each covering only a portion of the $Q^2$-range. The new data allow the determination of two coefficients in a low-momentum expansion leading to a new puzzle. By confronting experiment to state-of-the-art theoretical calculations we observe that…
A self-consistent Quasiparticle-Random-Phase-Approximation (QRPA) model which employs the canonical Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov (HFB) basis and an energy-density functional with a Skyrme mean field part and a density-dependent pairing, is used to study the monopole collective excitations of spherical even-even nuclei. The influence of the spurious state on the strength function of the isoscalar monopole excitations is clearly assessed. We compare the effect of different kinds of pairing forces (volume pairing, surface pairing and mixed pairing) on the monopole excitation strength function. The ene…
The robust (spin and isospin zero) $α$-particle remains one of the best projectiles to probe the nuclear isoscalar excitations. In the present work, a microscopic folding model analysis of the \ac inelastic scattering to the 2$^+$ (4.44 MeV), 0$^+$ (7.65 MeV), 3$^-$ (9.64 MeV), 0$^+$ (10.3 MeV) and 1$^-$ (10.84 MeV) states in $^{12}$C has been performed using the 3-$α$ resonating group method wave functions. The isoscalar transition strengths of these states were carefully studied based on the coupled-channel analysis using the microscopic folded form factors. A correlation between the weak bi…
The isoscalar monopole(ISM) and dipole(ISD) excitations in $^{12}$C are theoretically investigated with the shifted antisymmetrized molecular dynamics(AMD) plus $3α$-cluster generator coordinate method(GCM). The small amplitude vibration modes are described by coherent one-particle one-hole excitations expressed by small shift of single-nucleon Gaussian wave functions within the AMD framework, whereas the large amplitude cluster modes are incorporated by superposing $3α$-cluster wave functions in the GCM. The coupling of the excitations in the intrinsic frame with the rotation and parity trans…
We investigate the roles of deformation on the giant monopole resonance (GMR), particularly the mixing of the giant quadrupole resonance (GQR) and the effects of the neutron excess in the well-deformed nuclei around $^{110}$Zr and in the drip-line nuclei around $^{140}$Zr by means of the deformed quasiparticle-random-phase-approximation employing the Skyrme and the local pairing energy-density functionals. It is found that the isoscalar (IS) GMR has a two-peak structure, the lower peak of which is associated with the mixing between the ISGMR and the $K^π=0^{+}$ component of the ISGQR. The tran…
The excitation of the isovector giant dipole resonance (GDR) by alpha scattering is investigated as a method of probing the neutron excess in exotic nuclei. DWBA calculations are presented for 28O and 70Ca and the interplay of Coulomb and nuclear excitation is discussed. Since the magnitude of the Coulomb excitation amplitude is strongly influenced by the Q-value, the neutron excess plays an important role, as it tends to lower the energy of the GDR. The excitation of the compressional isoscalar dipole state in 70Ca by alpha scattering is also investigated. It is shown that the population of t…
Isoscalar (IS) monopole and dipole excitations in $^{16}$O were investigated by the method of shifted basis antisymmetrized molecular dynamics combined with the generator coordinate method. Significant strengths of the IS monopole and dipole transitions were obtained in the low-energy region below the giant resonances. In addition to the compressive mode, which mainly contributes to the high-energy strengths for the IS dipole giant resonance, we obtained a variety of low-energy dipole modes such as the vortical dipole mode in the $1^-_1$ state of the vibrating tetrahedral $4α$ and the $^{12}$C…
Collective monopole vibrations are studied in the framework of an antisymmetrized version of molecular dynamics as a function of the vibration amplitude. The giant monopole resonance energy in ${}^{40}Ca$ is sensitive to the incompressibility of the effective interaction, in good agreement with complete time-dependent Hartree-Fock calculations. The collective response of ${}^{12}C$, ${}^{16}O$ and ${}^{24}Mg$ is also studied. For these lighter nuclei that have an important contribution of an $α$-clustered component, different frequencies are observed, corresponding to two different types of vi…
Properties of the lowest $0^{+}$ states of $^{12}\mathrm{C}$ are calculated to study the role of three-body interactions in the $α$-cluster model. An additional short-range part of the local three-body potential is introduced to incorporate the effects beyond the $α$-cluster model. There is enough freedom in this potential to reproduce the experimental values of the ground-state and excited-state energies and the ground-state root-mean-square radius. The calculations reveal two principal choices of the two-body and three-body potentials. Firstly, one can adjust the potentials to obtain the wid…
We discuss the role of clustering on monopole, dipole, and quadrupole excitations in nuclei in the framework of the ab initio symmetry-adapted no-core shell model (SA-NCSM). The SA-NCSM starts from nucleon-nucleon potentials and, by exploring symmetries known to dominate the nuclear dynamics, can reach nuclei up through the calcium region by accommodating ultra-large model spaces critical to descriptions of clustering and collectivity. The results are based on calculations of electromagnetic sum rules and discretized responses using the Lanczos algorithm, that can be used to determine response…
We investigate the existence of weakly coupled gas-like states comprised of three $α$ particles around an $^{16}$O core in $^{28}$Si. We calculate the excited states in $^{28}$Si using the multi-configuration mixing method based on the $^{16}$O + 3$α$ cluster model. We also include the $^{16}$O + $^{12}$C and $^{24}$Mg + $α$ basis wave functions prepared by the generator coordinate method. To identify the gas-like states, we calculate the isoscalar monopole transition strengths and the overlap of the obtained states with the geometrical cluster wave function and the Tohsaki-Horiuchi-Schuck-Röp…
We have carried out a unified microscopic study of electric monopole, quadrupole and magnetic dipole excitations in fast rotating nuclei undergoing backbending, with special attention at the magnetic excitations. We found, among other results, that the strength of the orbital magnetic dipole excitations (scissors mode) gets enhanced by more than a factor four at high rotational frequency, above the backbending region. We provide a physical explanation for such an enhancement.
Cluster structures and monopole transitions in positive parity states of $^{16}$O were investigated based on the generator coordinate method calculation of an extended $^{12}$C+$α$ cluster model. The ground and excited states of a $^{12}$C cluster are taken into account by using $^{12}$C wave functions obtained with the method of antisymmetrized molecular dynamics. The $0^+_2$ state of $^{16}$O and its rotational members, the $2^+_1$ and $4^+_1$ states are described well by the cluster states dominated by the $^{12}$C($0^+_1$)+$α$ structure. Above the $^{12}$C($0^+_2$)+$α$ threshold energy, we…
We analyze the influence of the density dependence of the symmetry energy on the average excitation energy of the isoscalar giant monopole resonance (GMR) in stable and exotic neutron-rich nuclei by applying the relativistic extended Thomas-Fermi method in scaling and constrained calculations. For the effective nuclear interaction, we employ the relativistic mean field model supplemented by an isoscalar-isovector meson coupling that allows one to modify the density dependence of the symmetry energy without compromising the success of the model for binding energies and charge radii. The semicla…
Cluster structures of $^{14}$C were investigated with a method of antisymmetrized molecular dynamics (AMD) combined with a $3α+nn$ cluster model while focusing on the monopole excitations and linear-chain $3α$ band. Variation after parity and angular momentum projections was performed in the AMD framework, and the generator coordinate method was applied to take into account various $3α+nn$ cluster configurations. Energy spectra and monopole and $E2$ transition strengths of $0^+$, $2^+$, and $4^+$ states were calculated to assign band structures. The $0^+_3$ state with remarkable monopole trans…
The near-threshold 12C (0^+_2) resonance provides unique possibility for fast helium burning in stars, as predicted by Hoyle to explain the observed abundance of elements in the Universe. Properties of this resonance are calculated within the framework of the alpha-cluster model whose two-body and three-body effective potentials are tuned to describe the alpha - alpha scattering data, the energies of the 0^+_1 and 0^+_2 states, and the 0^+_1-state root-mean-square radius. The extremely small width of the 0^+_2 state, the 0_2^+ to 0_1^+ monopole transition matrix element, and transition radius …
