Let $Γ$ be a dense countable subgroup of a locally compact continuous group $G$. Take a probability measure $μ$ on $Γ$. There are two natural spaces of harmonic functions: the space of $μ$-harmonic functions on the countable group $Γ$ and the space of $μ$-harmonic functions seen as functions on $G$ defined a.s. with respect to its Haar measure $λ$. This leads to two natural Poisson boundaries: the $Γ$-Poisson boundary and the $G$-Poisson boundary. Since boundaries on the countable group are quite well understood, a natural question is to ask how $G$-boundary is related to the $Γ$-boundary.
In this paper we present a theoretical setting to build the $G$-Poisson boundary from the $Γ$-boundary. We apply this technics to build the Poisson boundary of the closure of the Baumslag-Solitar group in the group of real matrices. In particular we show that, under moment condition and in the case that the action on $\mathbf{R}$ is not contracting, this boundary is the $p$-solenoid.
In this paper we use a Malliavin-Stein type method to investigate Poisson and normal approximations for the measurable functions of infinitely many independent random variables. We combine Stein's method with the difference operators in theory of concentration inequalities to obtain explicit bounds on Wasserstein, Kolmogorov and total variation distances. When restricted to the functions of a finite number of independent random variables, our method provides new bounds in the normal approximation. Meanwhile, our bounds in Poisson approximation are first to obtain explicitly.
A scaling on some space is a measurable action of the group of positive real numbers. A measure on a measurable space equipped with a scaling is said to be $α$-homogeneous for some nonzero real number $α$ if the mass of any measurable set scaled by any factor $t > 0$ is the multiple $t^{-α}$ of the set's original mass. It is shown rather generally that given an $α$-homogeneous measure on a measurable space there is a measurable bijection between the space and the Cartesian product of a subset of the space and the positive real numbers (that is, a "system of polar coordinates") such that the pu…
We prove that homogenous sums inside a fixed discrete Poisson chaos are universal with respect to normal approximations. This result parallels some recent findings, in a Gaussian context, by Nourdin, Peccati and Reinert (2010). As a by-product of our analysis, we provide some refinements of the CLTs for random variables on the Poisson space proved by Peccati, Solé, Taqqu and Utzet (2010), and by Peccati and Zheng (2010).
We obtain an asymptotic Hölder estimate for expectations of a quite general class of discrete stochastic processes. Such expectations can also be described as solutions to a dynamic programming principle or as solutions to discretized PDEs. The result, which is also generalized to functions satisfying Pucci-type inequalities for discrete extremal operators, is a counterpart to the Krylov-Safonov regularity result in PDEs. However, the discrete step size $\varepsilon$ has some crucial effects compared to the PDE setting. The proof combines analytic and probabilistic arguments.
Recently the so-called Prabhakar generalization of the fractional Poisson counting process attracted much interest for his flexibility to adapt real world situations. In this renewal process the waiting times between events are IID continuous random variables. In the present paper we analyze discrete-time counterparts: Renewal processes with integer IID interarrival times which converge in well-scaled continuous-time limits to the Prabhakar-generalized fractional Poisson process. These processes exhibit non-Markovian features and long-time memory effects. We recover for special choices of para…
We consider two fractional versions of a family of nonnegative integer valued processes. We prove that their probability mass functions solve fractional Kolmogorov forward equations, and we show the overdispersion of these processes. As particular examples in this family, we can define fractional versions of some processes in the literature as the Polya-Aeppli, the Poisson Inverse Gaussian and the Negative Binomial. We also define and study some more general fractional versions with two fractional parameters.
We give a positive answer, in the measurable-group-theory context, to von Neumann's problem of knowing whether a non-amenable countable discrete group contains a non-cyclic free subgroup. We also get an embedding result of the free-group von Neumann factor into restricted wreath product factors.
We consider a Poisson process $η$ on an arbitrary measurable space with an arbitrary sigma-finite intensity measure. We establish an explicit Fock space representation of square integrable functions of $η$. As a consequence we identify explicitly, in terms of iterated difference operators, the integrands in the Wiener-Ito chaos expansion. We apply these results to extend well-known variance inequalities for homogeneous Poisson processes on the line to the general Poisson case. The Poincare inequality is a special case. Further applications are covariance identities for Poisson processes on (st…
We consider Poisson's equation for quasi-birth-and-death processes (QBDs) and we exploit the special transition structure of QBDs to obtain its solutions in two different forms. One is based on a decomposition through first passage times to lower levels, the other is based on a recursive expression for the deviation matrix. We revisit the link between a solution of Poisson's equation and perturbation analysis and we show that it applies to QBDs. We conclude with the PH/M/1 queue as an illustrative example, and we measure the sensitivity of the expected queue size to the initial value.
Mapping every simplex in the Delaunay mosaic of a discrete point set to the radius of the smallest empty circumsphere gives a generalized discrete Morse function. Choosing the points from an n-dimensional Poisson point process, we study the expected number of simplices in the Delaunay mosaic as well as the expected number of critical simplices and non-singular intervals in the corresponding generalized discrete gradient. Observing connections with other probabilistic models, we obtain precise expressions for the expected numbers in low dimensions. In particular, we get the expected numbers of …
In a previous paper, the authors introduced an approach to prove that the statistics of the extremes of a log-correlated Gaussian field converge to a Poisson-Dirichlet variable at the level of the Gibbs measure at low temperature and under suitable test functions. The method is based on showing that the model admits a one-step replica symmetry breaking in spin glass terminology. This implies Poisson-Dirichlet statistics by general spin glass arguments. In this note, this approach is used to prove Poisson-Dirichlet statistics for the two-dimensional discrete Gaussian free field, where boundary …
This paper uses the generator approach of Stein's method to analyze the gap between steady-state distributions of Markov chains and diffusion processes. Until now, the standard way to invoke Stein's method for this problem was to use the Poisson equation for the diffusion as a starting point. The main technical difficulty with this approach is obtaining bounds on the derivatives of the solution to the Poisson equation, also known as Stein factor bounds. In this paper we propose starting with the discrete Poisson equation of the Markov chain. An important step in our approach is extending the d…
Non-uniform estimates are obtained for Poisson, compound Poisson, translated Poisson, negative binomial and binomial approximations to sums of of m-dependent integer-valued random variables. Estimates for Wasserstein metric also follow easily from our results. The results are then exemplified by the approximation of Poisson binomial distribution, 2-runs and $m$-dependent $(k_1,k_2)$-events.
In this work we show a compactness Theorem for discrete functions on Poisson point clouds. We consider sequences with equibounded non-local $p$-Dirichlet energy: the novelty consists in the intermediate-interaction regime at which the non-local energy is computed.
This paper considers a discrete-time single-server queue with a single acceptance period for a Poissonian population of homogeneous customers. Customers are served on a first-come first-served (FCFS) basis, and their service times are independent and identically distributed with a general distribution. We assume that each customer chooses her/his arrival-time slot with the goal of minimizing her/his expected waiting time in competition with other customers. For this queueing game, we derive a symmetric (mixed-strategy) Nash equilibrium; that is, an equilibrium arrival-time distribution of homo…
We study the asymptotic behavior of empirical processes generated by measurable bounded functions of an infinite source Poisson transmission process when the session length have infinite variance. In spite of the boundedness of the function, the normalized fluctuations of such an empirical process converge to a non-Gaussian stable process. This phenomenon can be viewed as caused by the long-range dependence in the transmission process. Completing previous results on the empirical mean of similar types of processes, our results on non-linear bounded functions exhibit the influence of the limit …
We suggest a new hardcore Poisson-type distribution for Young diagrams with the row lengths from some finite list. A discrete variant of the time-ordered Matérn II process in 1D is employed. This approach is related to that based on the interlacing sequences due to Kerov and others, but we restrict the number of rows. The basic lengths are assumed comparable with the total order of the diagram in the quasi-classical limit, which results in new methods and new formulas. An interesting application is to random walks where the steps are at the points satisfying the classical Poisson distribution …
This paper introduces some new characterizations of COM-Poisson random variables. First, it extends Moran-Chatterji characterization and generalizes Rao-Rubin characterization of Poisson distribution to COM-Poisson distribution. Then, it defines the COM-type discrete r.v. ${X_ν}$ of the discrete random variable $X$. The probability mass function of ${X_ν}$ has a link to the Rényi entropy and Tsallis entropy of order $ν$ of $X$. And then we can get the characterization of Stam inequality for COM-type discrete version Fisher information. By using the recurrence formula, the property that COM-Poi…
In recent years a huge interdisciplinary field has emerged which is devoted to the complex dynamics of anomalous transport with long-time memory and non-markovian features. It was found that the framework of fractional calculus and its generalizations are able to capture these phenomena. Many of the classical models are based on continuous-time renewal processes and use the Montroll Weiss continuous time random walk (CTRW) approach. On the other hand their discrete time counterparts are rarely considered in the literature despite their importance in various applications. The goal of the presen…
New bounds on the total variation distance between the law of integer valued functionals of possibly non-symmetric and non-homogeneous infinite Rademacher sequences and the Poisson distribution are established. They are based on a combination of the Chen-Stein method and a discrete version of Malliavin calculus. We give some applications to shifted discrete multiple stochastic integrals.

The (conditional or unconditional) distribution of the continuous scan statistic in a one-dimensional Poisson process may be approximated by that of a discrete analogue via time discretization (to be referred to as the discrete approximation). With the help of a change-of-measure argument, we derive the first-order term of the discrete approximation which involves some functionals of the Poisson process. Richardson's extrapolation is then applied to yield a corrected (second-order) approximation. Numerical results are presented to compare various approximations.
The main goal of this paper is to determine the Poisson boundary of lamplighter random walks over a general class of discrete groups $Γ$ endowed with a rich boundary. The starting point is the Strip Criterion of identification of the Poisson boundary for random walks on discrete groups due to Kaimanovich. A geometrical method for constructing the strip as a subset of the lamplighter group starting with a smaller strip in the base group $Γ$ is developed. Then, this method is applied to several classes of base groups $Γ$: groups with infinitely many ends, hyperbolic groups in the sense of Gromov…
We prove, using the Brascamp-Lieb inequality, that the Gaussian measure is the only strong log-concave measure having a strong log-concavity parameter equal to its covariance matrix. We also give a similar characterization of the Poisson measure in the discrete case, using "Chebyshev's other inequality". We briefly discuss how these results relate to Stein and Stein-Chen methods for Gaussian and Poisson approximation, and to the Bakry-Emery calculus.
We apply a discrete version of the methodology in \cite{gauss} to obtain a recursive asymptotic expansion for $\esp[h(W)]$ in terms of Poisson expectations, where $W$ is a sum of independent integer-valued random variables and $h$ is a polynomially growing function. We also discuss the remainder estimations.
The Poisson-Kingman distributions, $\mathrm{PK}(ρ)$, on the infinite simplex, can be constructed from a Poisson point process having intensity density $ρ$ or by taking the ranked jumps up till a specified time of a subordinator with Lévy density $ρ$, as proportions of the subordinator. As a natural extension, we replace the Poisson point process with a negative binomial point process having parameter $r>0$ and Lévy density $ρ$, thereby defining a new class $\mathrm{PK}^{(r)}(ρ)$ of distributions on the infinite simplex. The new class contains the two-parameter generalisation $\mathrm{PD}(α, θ)…
Sufficient conditions are developed, under which the compound Poisson distribution has maximal entropy within a natural class of probability measures on the nonnegative integers. Recently, one of the authors [O. Johnson, {\em Stoch. Proc. Appl.}, 2007] used a semigroup approach to show that the Poisson has maximal entropy among all ultra-log-concave distributions with fixed mean. We show via a non-trivial extension of this semigroup approach that the natural analog of the Poisson maximum entropy property remains valid if the compound Poisson distributions under consideration are log-concave, b…
Poisson's equation has a lot of applications in various areas. Usually it is hard to derive the explicit expression of the solution of Poisson's equation for a Markov chain on an infinitely many state space. We will present a computational framework for the solution for both discrete-time Markov chains (DTMCs) and continuous-time Markov chains (CTMCs), by developing the technique of augmented truncation approximations. The convergence to the solution is investigated in terms of the assumption about the monotonicity of the first return times, and is further established for two types of truncati…
We consider a Poisson process $η$ on a measurable space $(\BY,\mathcal{Y})$ equipped with a partial ordering, assumed to be strict almost everwhwere with respect to the intensity measure $λ$ of $η$. We give a Clark-Ocone type formula providing an explicit representation of square integrable martingales (defined with respect to the natural filtration associated with $η$), which was previously known only in the special case, when $λ$ is the product of Lebesgue measure on $\R_+$ and a $σ$-finite measure on another space $\BX$. Our proof is new and based on only a few basic properties of Poisson p…
In this paper, a new method based on probability generating functions is used to obtain multiple Stein operators for various random variables closely related to Poisson, binomial and negative binomial distributions. Also, Stein operators for certain compound distributions, where the random summand satisfies Panjer's recurrence relation, are derived. A well-known perturbation approach for Stein's method is used to obtain total variation bounds for the distributions mentioned above. The importance of such approximations is illustrated, for example, by the binomial convoluted with Poisson approxi…
In this article we survey properties of mixed Poisson distributions and probabilistic aspects of the Stirling transform: given a non-negative random variable $X$ with moment sequence $(μ_s)_{s\in\mathbb{N}}$ we determine a discrete random variable $Y$, whose moment sequence is given by the Stirling transform of the sequence $(μ_s)_{s\in\mathbb{N}}$, and identify the distribution as a mixed Poisson distribution. We discuss properties of this family of distributions and present a simple limit theorem based on expansions of factorial moments instead of power moments. Moreover, we present several …
In this article, we give some reviews concerning negative probabilities model and quasi-infinitely divisible at the beginning. We next extend Feller's characterization of discrete infinitely divisible distributions to signed discrete infinitely divisible distributions, which are discrete pseudo compound Poisson (DPCP) distributions with connections to the Lévy-Wiener theorem. This is a special case of an open problem which is proposed by Sato(2014), Chaumont and Yor(2012). An analogous result involving characteristic functions is shown for signed integer-valued infinitely divisible distributio…
This note aims at presenting several new theoretical results for the compound Poisson point process, which follows the work of Zhang \emph{et al.} [Insurance~Math.~Econom.~59(2014), 325-336]. The first part provides a new characterization for a discrete compound Poisson point process (proposed by {Acz{é}l} [Acta~Math.~Hungar.~3(3)(1952), 219-224]), it extends the characterization of the Poisson point process given by Copeland and Regan [Ann.~Math.~(1936): 357-362]. Next, we derive some concentration inequalities for discrete compound Poisson point process (negative binomial random variable wit…
We describe five types of results concerning information and concentration of discrete random variables, and relationships between them, motivated by their counterparts in the continuous case. The results we consider are information theoretic approaches to Poisson approximation, the maximum entropy property of the Poisson distribution, discrete concentration (Poincaré and logarithmic Sobolev) inequalities, monotonicity of entropy and concavity of entropy in the Shepp--Olkin regime.
In this paper we consider a scalar transport equation with constant coefficients on domains with discrete space and continuous, discrete or general time. We show that on all these underlying domains solutions of the transport equation can conserve sign and integrals both in time and space. Detailed analysis reveals that, under some initial conditions, the solutions correspond to counting stochastic processes and related probability distributions. Consequently, the transport equation could generate various modifications of these processes and distributions and provide some insights into corresp…
