We consider the problem of deciding whether a common solution to a multivariate polynomial equation system is isolated or not. We present conditions on a given truncated Puiseux series vector centered at the point ensuring that it is not isolated. In addition, in the case that the set of all common solutions of the system has dimension 1, we obtain further conditions specifying to what extent the given vector of truncated Puiseux series coincides with the initial part of a parametrization of a curve of solutions passing through the point.
We give an algorithm to compute term by term multivariate Puiseux series expansions of series arising as local parametrizations of zeroes of systems of algebraic equations at singular points. The algorithm is an extension of Newton's method for plane algebraic curves replacing the Newton polygon by the tropical variety of the ideal generated by the system. As a corollary we deduce a property of tropical varieties of quasi-ordinary singularities.
The aim of this paper is to give a constructive proof of one of the basic theorems of tropical geometry: given a point on a tropical variety (defined using initial ideals), there exists a Puiseux-valued ``lift'' of this point in the algebraic variety. This theorem is so fundamental because it justifies why a tropical variety (defined combinatorially using initial ideals) carries information about algebraic varieties: it is the image of an algebraic variety over the Puiseux series under the valuation map. We have implemented the ``lifting algorithm'' using Singular and Gfan if the base field ar…
By the fundamental work of Griffiths one knows that, under suitable assumption, homological and algebraic equivalence do not coincide for a general hypersurface section of a smooth projective variety $Y$. In the present paper we prove the same result in case $Y$ has isolated singularities.
In this paper we propose the concept of formal desingularizations as a substitute for the resolution of algebraic varieties. Though a usual resolution of algebraic varieties provides more information on the structure of singularities there is evidence that the weaker concept is enough for many computational purposes. We give a detailed study of the Jung method and show how it facilitates an efficient computation of formal desingularizations for projective surfaces over a field of characteristic zero, not necessarily algebraically closed. The paper includes a generalization of Duval's Theorem o…
We study codimension two determinantal varieties with isolated singularities. These singularities admit a unique smoothing, thus we can define their Milnor number as the middle Betti number of their generic fiber. For surfaces in C^4, we obtain a Lê-Greuel formula expressing the Milnor number of the surface in terms of the second polar multiplicity and the Milnor number of a generic section. We also relate the Milnor number with Ebeling and Gusein-Zade index of the 1- form given by the differential of a generic linear projection defined on the surface. To illustrate the results, in the last se…
In this paper we study super-isolated abelian varieties, that is, abelian varieties over finite fields whose isogeny class contains a single isomorphism class. The goal of this paper is to (1) characterize whether a product of super-isolated varieties is super-isolated, and (2) characterize which super-isolated abelian varieties admit principal polarizations, and how many up to polarized isomorphisms.
In this paper we study a notion of volume for Cartier divisors on arbitrary blow-ups of normal complex algebraic varieties of dimension greater than one, with a distinguished point. We apply this to study a volume for normal isolated singularities, generalizing work on surfaces done by Wahl. We also compare this volume of isolated singularities to a different generalization due to Boucksom, de Fernex and Favre.
A homotopical treatment of intersection cohomology recently developed by Chataur-Saralegui-Tanré associates a "perverse algebraic model" to every topological pseudomanifold, extending Sullivan's presentation of rational homotopy to intersection cohomology. In this context, there is a notion of "intersection-formality", measuring the vanishing of Massey products in intersection cohomology. In the present paper, we study the perverse algebraic model of complex projective varieties with isolated singularities. We endow such invariant with natural mixed Hodge structures. This allows us to prove so…
Firstly, we see that the bases of the miniversal deformations of isolated $\mathbb{Q}$-Gorenstein toric singularities are quite restricted. In particular, we classify the analytic germs of embedding dimension $\leq 2$ which are the bases of the miniversal deformations of isolated $\mathbb{Q}$-Gorenstein toric singularities. Secondly, we show that the deformation spaces of isolated Gorenstein toric $3$-fold singularities appear, in a weak sense, as singularities of the K-moduli stack of K-semistable Fano varieties of every dimension $\geq 3$. As a consequence, we prove that the number of local …
The (homogeneous) Essentially Isolated Determinantal Variety is the natural generalization of generic determinantal variety, and is fundamental example to study non-isolated singularities. In this paper we study the characteristic classes on these varieties. We give explicit formulas of their Chern-Schwartz-MacPherson classes and Chern-Mather classes via standard Schubert calculus. As corollaries we obtain formulas for their (generic) sectional Euler characteristics, characteristic cycles and polar classes.
Let X be a complex projective variety of dimension n with only isolated normal singularities. In this paper we prove, using mixed Hodge theory, that if the link of each singular point of X is (n-2)-connected, then X is a formal topological space. This result applies to a large class of examples, such as normal surface singularities, varieties with ordinary multiple points, hypersurfaces with isolated singularities and more generally, complete intersections with isolated singularities. We obtain analogous results for contractions of subvarieties.
Let $X\subseteq \mathbb{P}^N$ be a non-degenerate normal projective variety of codimension $e$ and degree $d$ with isolated $\mathbb{Q}$-Gorenstein singularities. We prove that the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity $\text{reg}(\mathcal{O}_{X})\le d-e$, as predicted by the Eisenbud-Goto regularity conjecture. Such a bound fails for general projective varieties. The main techniques are Noma's classification of non-degenerated projective varieties and Nadel vanishing for multiplier ideals. We also classify the extremal and the next to extremal cases.
Let $X$ be a Fano variety with at worst isolated quotient singularities. Our result asserts that if $C \cdot (-K_X) > max\{\frac{n}{2}+1,\frac{2n}{3}\}$ for every curve $C \subset X$, then $ρ_X=1$.
Given a weighted flag variety $wΣ(μ,u)$ corresponding to chosen fixed parameters $μ$ and $u$, we present an algorithm to compute lists of all possible projectively Gorenstein $n$-folds, having canonical weight $k$ and isolated orbifold points, appearing as weighted complete intersections in $wΣ(μ,u) $ or some projective cone(s) over $wΣ(μ,u)$. We apply our algorithm to compute lists of interesting classes of polarized 3-folds with isolated orbifold points in the codimension 8 weighted $G_2$ variety. We also show the existence of some families of log-terminal $\mathbb Q$-Fano 3-folds in codimen…
Let $V$ be a complex projective variety with isolated singularities. Let the smooth part be given the metric induced by a projective imbedding. Then we develop the $L_2$ harmonic theory and construct a pure Hodge structure on the $L_2$-cohomology of $V$. If the dimension of $V$ is two, we put a cohomological Hodge structure on its complex of sheaves of $L_2$ forms.
For a G-invariant holomorphic 1-form with an isolated singular point on a germ of a complex-analytic G-variety with an isolated singular point (G is a finite group) one has notions of the equivariant homological index and of the (reduced) equivariant radial index as elements of the ring of complex representations of the group. We show that on a germ of a smooth complex-analytic G-variety these indices coincide. This permits to consider the difference between them as a version of the equivariant Milnor number of a germ a G-variety with an isolated singular point.
This article is about 1-forms on complex analytic varieties and it is particularly relevant when the variety has non-isolated singularities. We first show how the radial extension technique of M.-H. Schwartz can be adapted to 1-forms, allowing us to define the Schwartz index of 1-forms with isolated singularities on singular varieties. Then we see how MacPherson's local Euler obstruction, adapted to 1-forms in general, relates to the Schwartz index, thus obtaining a proportionality theorem for these indices analogous to the one for vector fields. We also extend the definition of the GSV-index …

Let $\f: X \ra Z$ be a proper surjective map from a smooth complex manifold $X$ onto a normal variety $Z$. If $\f$ has connected fibers and $-K_X$ is $\f$-ample then $\f$ is called a good contraction. In the present paper we study good contractions, fibers of which have dimension less or equal than two: after describing possible two dimensional isolated fibers we discuss their scheme theoretic structure and the geometry of $\f:X\ra Z$ nearby such a fiber. If $dimX=4$ and $\f$ is birational with an isolated 2 dimensional fiber then we obtain a complete description of $\f$. We provide also a des…
In this paper, we give partial answers to the following questions: Which contact manifolds are contactomorphic to links of isolated complex singularities? Which symplectic manifolds are symplectomorphic to smooth affine varieties? The invariant that we will use to distinguish such manifolds is called the growth rate of wrapped Floer cohomology. Using this invariant we show that if Q is a simply connected manifold whose unit cotangent bundle is contactomorphic to the link of an isolated singularity or whose cotangent bundle is symplectomorphic to a smooth affine variety then M must be rationall…
We prove a numerical characterization of $\mathbb{P}^n$ for varieties with at worst isolated local complete intersection quotient singularities. In dimension three, we prove such a numerical characterization of $\mathbb{P}^3$ for normal $\mathbb{Q}$-Gorenstein projective varieties.
We show that the chow group of $p$-cycles with rational coefficients are isomorphic to the corresponding rational homology groups for smooth complex projective varieties carrying a holomorphic vector field with an isolated zero locus. As applications, we obtain Chow groups and Lawson homology groups with rational coefficients and verify the Friedlander-Mazur conjecture and the Generalized Hodge conjecture for those varieties.
We give an example of a non $\Q$-Gorenstein variety which is canonical but not klt, and whose canonical divisor has an irrational valuation. We also give an example of an irrational jumping number and we prove that there are no accumulation points for the jumping numbers of normal non-$\Q$-Gorenstein varieties with isolated singularities.
We define the notion of isosingular loci of algebraic varieties, following the analytic case first studied by Ephraim. In particular, we give a partial extension of his main result in arbitrary characteristic and a full extension assuming characteristic $0$. One of the main obstructions in the positive characteristic case is the non-separability of the orbit map associated to the contact group, as first observed by Greuel and Pham for isolated singularities.
Let $X$ be a complex projective manifold, $L$ an ample line bundle on $X$, and assume that we have a $\mathbb{C}^*$ action on $(X,L)$. We classify such triples $(X,L,\mathbb{C}^*)$ for which the closure of a general orbit of the $\mathbb{C}^*$ action is of degree $\leq 3$ with respect to $L$ and, in addition, the source and the sink of the action are isolated fixed points, and the $\mathbb{C}^*$ action on the normal bundle of every fixed point component has weights $\pm 1$. We treat this situation by relating it to the classical adjunction theory. As an application, we prove that contact Fano …
We prove that the space of coinvariants of functions on an affine variety by a Lie algebra of vector fields whose flow generates finitely many leaves is finite-dimensional. Cases of the theorem include Poisson (or more generally Jacobi) varieties with finitely many symplectic leaves under Hamiltonian flow, complete intersections in Calabi-Yau varieties with isolated singularities under the flow of incompressible vector fields, quotients of Calabi-Yau varieties by finite volume-preserving groups under the incompressible vector fields, and arbitrary varieties with isolated singularities under th…
Homological index of a holomorphic 1-form on a complex analytic variety with an isolated singular point is an analogue of the usual index of a 1-form on a non-singular manifold. One can say that it corresponds to the top Chern number of a manifold. We offer a definition of homological indices for collections of 1-forms on a (purely dimensional) complex analytic variety with an isolated singular point corresponding to other Chern numbers. We also define new invariants of germs of complex analytic varieties with isolated singular points related to "vanishing Chern numbers" at them.
Motivated by the embedding problem of canonical models in small codimension, we extend Severi's double point formula to the case of surfaces with rational double points, and we give more general double point formulae for varieties with isolated singularities. A concrete application is for surfaces with geometric genus $p_g=5$: the canonical model is embedded in $\mathbb{P}^4$ if and only if we have a complete intersection of type $(2,4)$ or $(3,3)$.
Given two nonzero polynomials $f, g \in\mathbb R[x,y]$ and a point $(a, b) \in \mathbb{R}^2,$ we give some necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of the limit $\displaystyle \lim_{(x, y) \to (a, b)} \frac{f(x, y)}{g(x, y)}.$ We also show that, if the denominator $g$ has an isolated zero at the given point $(a, b),$ then the set of possible limits of $\displaystyle \lim_{(x, y) \to (a, b)} \frac{f(x, y)}{g(x, y)}$ is a closed interval in $\overline{\mathbb{R}}$ and can be explicitly determined. As an application, we propose an effective algorithm to verify the existence of the li…
Several authors have proved Lefschetz type formulae for the local Euler obstruction. In particular, a result of this type is proved in [BLS].The formula proved in that paper turns out to be equivalent to saying that the local Euler obstruction, as a constructible function, satisfies the local Euler condition (in bivariant theory) with respect to general linear forms. The purpose of this work is to understand what prevents the local Euler obstruction of satisfying the local Euler condition with respect to functions which are singular at the considered point. This is measured by an invariant (or…
We study the homotopy groups of complements to reducible divisors on non-singular projective varieties with ample components and isolated non normal crossings. We prove a vanishing theorem generalizing conditions for commutativity of the fundamental groups. The calculation of supports of non vanishing homotopy groups as modules over the fundamental group in terms of the geometry of the locus of non-normal crossings is discussed. We review previous work on the local study of isolated non-normal crossings and relate the motivic zeta function to the local polytopes of quasiadjunction. As an appli…
This is a computational study of bottlenecks on algebraic varieties. The bottlenecks of a smooth variety $X \subseteq \mathbb{C}^n$ are the lines in $\mathbb{C}^n$ which are normal to $X$ at two distinct points. The main result is a numerical homotopy that can be used to approximate all isolated bottlenecks. This homotopy has the optimal number of paths under certain genericity assumptions. In the process we prove bounds on the number of bottlenecks in terms of the Euclidean distance degree. Applications include the optimization problem of computing the distance between two real varieties. Als…
Motivated by the study of the structure of algebraic actions the additive group on affine threefolds X, we consider a special class of such varieties whose algebraic quotient morphisms X $\rightarrow$ X//Ga restrict to principal homogeneous bundles over the complement of a smooth point of the quotient. We establish basic general properties of these varieties and construct families of examples illustrating their rich geometry. In particular, we give a complete classification of a natural subclass consisting of threefolds X endowed with proper Ga-actions, whose algebraic quotient morphisms $π$ :…
There are some generalizations of the classical Eisenbud-Levine-Khimshashvili formula for the index of a singular point of an analytic vector field on $R^n$ for vector fields on singular varieties. We offer an alternative approach based on the study of indices of 1-forms instead of vector fields. When the variety under consideration is a real isolated complete intersection singularity (icis), we define an index of a (real) 1-form on it. In the complex setting we define an index of a holomorphic 1-form on a complex icis and express it as the dimension of a certain algebra. In the real setting, …
We study the Lipschitz Geometry of Complex Algebraic Singularities. For this purpose we introduce the notion of choking horns. A Choking horn is a family of cycles on the family of the sections of an algebraic variety by very small spheres centered at a singular point, such that the cycles cannot be boundaries of nearby chains. The presence of choking horns is an obstruction to metric conicalness as we can see with some classical isolated hypersurfaces singularities which we prove are not metrically conic. We also show that there exist infinitely countably many singular varieties, which are lo…
