Several authors have proved Lefschetz type formulae for the local Euler obstruction. In particular, a result of this type is proved in [BLS].The formula proved in that paper turns out to be equivalent to saying that the local Euler obstruction, as a constructible function, satisfies the local Euler condition (in bivariant theory) with respect to general linear forms.
The purpose of this work is to understand what prevents the local Euler obstruction of satisfying the local Euler condition with respect to functions which are singular at the considered point. This is measured by an invariant (or ``defect'') of such functions that we define below. We give an interpretation of this defect in terms of vanishing cycles, which allows us to calculate it algebraically. When the function has an isolated singularity, our invariant can be defined geometrically, via obstruction theory. We notice that this invariant unifies the usual concepts of {\it the Milnor number} of a function and of the {\it local Euler obstruction} of an analytic set.
In this note we introduce the concept of reflective projective varieties. These are stratified projective varieties with certain dimension constraints on their dual varieties. We prove that for such varieties, the Chern-Schwartz-MacPherson classes of the strata completely determine the local Euler obstructions and the polar degrees. We also propose an algorithm to compute the local Euler obstructions when such varieties are formed by group orbits. As examples we compute the local Euler obstructions of quadratic hypersurfaces and ordinary determinantal varieties to illustrate our method.
This work has two complementary parts, in the first part we compute the local Euler obstruction of generic determinantal varieties and apply this result to compute the Chern--Schwartz--MacPherson class of such varieties. In the second part we compute the Euler characteristic of the stabilization of an essentially isolated determinantal singularity (EIDS). The formula is given in terms of the local Euler obstruction and Gaffney's $m_{d}$ multiplicity.
For a complex analytic variety with an action of a finite group and for an invariant 1-form on it, we give an equivariant version (with values in the Burnside ring of the group) of the local Euler obstruction of the 1-form and describe its relation with the equivariant radial index defined earlier. This leads to equivariant versions of the local Euler obstruction of a complex analytic space and of the global Euler obstruction.
In this paper, we investigate the local Euler obstruction and the relative local Euler obstruction in terms of constructible complexes of sheaves, characteristic cycles, and vanishing cycles. The fundamental tool that we use is the notion of a characteristic complex for an analytic space embedded in affine space.
The Euler obstruction of a function can be viewed as a generalization of the Milnor number for functions defined on singular spaces. In this work, using the Euler obstruction of a function, we give a version of the Lê-Greuel formula for two germs of analytic functions with isolated singularity at the origin on a singular space. Using this formula and results of Loeser, we also present an integral formula for the Euler obstruction of a function, generalizing a formula of Kennedy.
We give explicit formulas for the dimensions and the degrees of $A$-discriminant varieties introduced by Gelfand-Kapranov-Zelevinsky. Our formulas can be applied also to the case where the $A$-discriminant varieties are higher-codimensional and their degrees are described by the geometry of the configurations $A$. Moreover combinatorial formulas for the Euler obstructions of general (not necessarily normal) toric varieties will be also given.
A notion of the radial index of an isolated singular point of a 1-form on a singular (real or complex) variety is discussed. For the differential of a function it is related to the Euler characteristic of the Milnor fibre of the function. A connection between the radial index and the local Euler obstruction of a 1-form is described. This gives an expression for the local Euler obstruction of the differential of a function in terms of Euler characteristics of some Milnor fibres.
Macpherson defined Chern-Schwartz-Macpherson (CSM) classes by introducing the (local) Euler obstruction function, which is an integer valued function on the variety that is constant on each stratum of a Whitney stratification of an algebraic variety. By understanding the Euler obstruction function, one gains insights about a singular algebraic variety. It was recently shown by the author and B. Wang, how to compute these functions using maximum likelihood degrees. This paper discusses a symbolic and a numerical implementation of algorithms to compute the Euler obstruction at a point. Macaulay2…
We use Matsui and Takeuchi's formula for toric A-discriminants to give algorithms for computing local Euler obstructions and dual degrees of toric surfaces and 3-folds. In particular, we consider weighted projective spaces. As an application we give counterexamples to a conjecture by Matsui and Takeuchi. As another application we recover the well-known fact that the only defective normal toric surfaces are cones.
This is a note on MacPherson's local Euler obstruction, which plays an important role recently in Donaldson-Thomas theory by the work of Behrend. We introduce MacPherson's original definition, and prove that it is equivalent to the algebraic definition used by Behrend, following the method of Gonzalez-Sprinberg. We also give a formula of the local Euler obstruction in terms of Lagrangian intersections. As an application, we consider a scheme or DM stack $X$ admitting a symmetric obstruction theory. Furthermore we assume that there is a $\CC^*$ action on $X$, which makes the obstruction theory …
The goal of this note is to explain a derivation of the formulas for the local Euler obstructions of determinantal varieties of general, symmetric and skew-symmetric matrices, by studying the invariant de Rham complex and using character formulas for simple equivariant $D$-modules. These calculations are then combined with standard arguments involving Kashiwara's local index formula and the description of characteristic cycles of simple equivariant $D$-modules. The formulas are implicit in the work of Boe and Fu, and in the case of general matrices they have also been obtained recently by Gaff…
Let $X$ be a complete $\mathbb{Q}$-factorial toric variety. We explicitly describe the space $H^2(X,T_X)$ and the cup product map $H^1(X,T_X)\times H^1(X,T_X)\to H^2(X,T_X)$ in combinatorial terms. Using this, we give an example of a smooth projective toric threefold for which the cup product map does not vanish, showing that in general, smooth complete toric varieties may have obstructed deformations.
We give a numerical algorithm computing Euler obstruction functions using maximum likelihood degrees. The maximum likelihood degree is a well-studied property of a variety in algebraic statistics and computational algebraic geometry. In this article we use this degree to give a new way to compute Euler obstruction functions. We define the maximum likelihood obstruction function and show how it coincides with the Euler obstruction function. With this insight, we are able to bring new tools of computational algebraic geometry to study Euler obstruction functions.
We show how to transport descent obstructions from the category of covers to the category of varieties. We deduce examples of curves having $\QQ$ as field of moduli, that admit models over every completion of $\QQ$, but have no model over $\QQ$.
We investigate the question of whether the existence of a family of local zero-cycles of degree $d$ orthogonal to the Brauer group implies the non-emptiness of the Brauer-Manin set for certain varieties. We provide various examples of Brauer-Manin obstruction to the existence of zero-cycles of appropriate degrees.
Applying a local Gauss-Bonnet formula for closed subanalytic sets to the complex analytic case, we obtain characterizations of the Euler obstruction of a complex analytic germ in terms of the Lipschitz-Killing curvatures and the Chern forms of its regular part. We also prove analogous results for the global Euler obstruction. As a corollary, we give a positive answer to a question of Fu on the Euler obstruction and the Gauss-Bonnet measure.
Let $X \subset \Bbb{C}^n$ be an equidimensional complex algebraic set and let $f: X \to \mathbb{C}$ be a polynomial function. For each $c \in \Bbb{C}$, we define the global Brasselet number of $f$ at $c$, a global counterpart of the Brasselet number defined by the authors in a previous work, and the Brasselet number at infinity of $f$ at $c$. Then we establish several formulas relating these numbers to the topology of $X$ and the critical points of $f$.
We introduce a certain index of a collection of germs of 1-forms on a germ of a singular variety which is a generalization of the local Euler obstruction corresponding to Chern numbers different from the top one.
Euler-symmetric projective varieties are nondegenerate projective varieties admitting many C*-actions of Euler type. They are quasi-homogeneous and uniquely determined by their fundamental forms at a general point. We show that Euler-symmetric projective varieties can be classified by symbol systems, a class of algebraic objects modeled on the systems of fundamental forms at general points of projective varieties. We study relations between the algebraic properties of symbol systems and the geometric properties of Euler-symmetric projective varieties. We describe also the relation between Eule…
We find a way to associate to a gerbe defined over a number field a Brauer-Manin obstruction, which measures, as for varieties, the defect to the existence of a global section. This leads us to a generalization of Tate-Poitou duality in the non-abelian case.
Recently Dasheng Wei proved that the Brauer-Manin obstruction is the only obstruction to the Hasse principle for 0-cycles of degree 1 on some fibrations over the projective line defined by bi-cyclic normic equations. In the present paper, we prove the exactness of the global-to-local sequence for Chow groups of 0-cycles of such varieties, which signifies that the Brauer-Manin obstruction is also the only obstruction to weak approximation for 0-cycles of arbitrary degree. Our main theorem also generalizes several existing results.
We study the Euler obstruction of essentially isolated determinantal singularities (EIDS). The EIDS were defined by W. Ebeling and S. Gusein-Zade, as a generalization of isolated singularity. We obtain some formulas to calculate the Euler obstruction for the determinantal varieties with singular set an ICIS.
We determine the relation between the local Euler obstruction $Eu_f$ of a holomorphic function $f$ and different generalizations of the Milnor number for functions on singular spaces.
Using the index theorem of Dubson, Le, Ginsburg and Sabbah for the vanishing cycle functor, we give a short proof of formula of Brasselet, Le and Seade for the Euler obstruction.
For an affine complex algebraic singular space Y, we define a global Euler obstruction Eu(Y) which extends the Euler-Poincare characteristic of a nonsingular Y. Using Lefschetz pencils, we express Eu(Y) as alternating sum of global polar invariants.
In this paper we survey some results on the symmetric semi-perfect obstruction theory on a Deligne-Mumford stack $X$ constructed by Chang-Li, and Behrend's theorem equating the weighted Euler characteristic of $X$ and the virtual count of $X$ by symmetric semi-perfect obstruction theories. As an application, we prove that Joyce's d-critical scheme admits a symmetric semi-perfect obstruction theory, which can be applied to the virtual Euler characteristics by Jiang-Thomas.
For $m\geq n$, Let $K$ be an algebraic closed base field, and define $τ_{m,n,k}$ to be the set of $m\times n$ matrices over $K$ with kernel dimension $\geq k$. This is a projective subvariety of $\mathbb{P}^{mn-1}$, and is usually called determinantal variety. In most cases $τ_{m,n,k}$ is singular with singular locus $τ_{m,n,k+1}$. In this paper we compute the local Euler obstruction of $τ_{m,n,k}$, and we prove that the characteristic cycle of the intersection cohomology complex of $τ_{m,n,k}$ is irreducible. We also give an explicit formula for the Chern-Mather class of $τ_{m,n,k}$ as a clas…
We study the Brauer-Manin obstruction to the existence of zero-cycles of degree $d$ on certain classes of varieties over number fields. We generalise existing results in the literature and prove some results about fibrations over the projective line, where the geometric Brauer group of the generic fibre is not assumed to be finite. The idea is to assume that the Brauer-Manin obstruction to the Hasse principle is the only one for certain fibres and then deduce analogous results for zero-cycles.
We continue our study on smooth complex projective varieties $X$ of maximal Albanese dimension and of general type satisfying $χ(X, ω_X)=0$. We formulate a conjectural characterization of such varieties and prove this conjecture when the Albanese variety has only three simple factors.
This is my PhD Thesis, part of it has published in Acta Mathematica Sinica. In this paper, a class of morphisms which have a kind of singularity weaker than normal crossing is considered. We construct the obstruction such that the so-called semi-stable log structures exists if and only if the obstruction vanishes. In the case of no power, if the obstruction vanishes, then the semi-stable log structure is unique up to a unique isomorphism. So we obtain a kind of canonical structures on this family of morphisms.
Using the weak factorization theorem we give a simple presentation for the value group of the universal Euler characteristic with compact support for varieties of characteristic zero and describe the value group of the universal Euler characteristic of pairs. This gives a new proof for the existence of natural Euler characteristics with values in the Grothendieck group of Chow motives. A generalization of the presentation to the relative setting allows us to define duality and the six operations.
In this paper, we study obstructions to the Dirichlet property by two approaches: density of non-positive points and functionals on adelic R-divisors. Applied to the algebraic dynamical systems, these results provide examples of nef adelic arithmetic R-Cartier divisor which does not have the Dirichlet property. We hope the obstructions obtained in the article will give ways toward criteria of the Dirichlet property.
We prove that for a large class of subvarieties of abelian varieties over global function fields, the Brauer-Manin condition on adelic points cuts out exactly the rational points. This result is obtained from more general results concerning the intersection of the adelic points of a subvariety with the adelic closure of the group of rational points of the abelian variety.
Let $\mathbb{G}_a$ be the additive group of the field of complex numbers $\mathbb{C}$. We say that an irreducible algebraic variety $X$ of dimension $n$ admits an additive action if there is a regular action of the group $\mathbb{G}_a^n = \mathbb{G}_a \times \ldots \times \mathbb{G}_a$ ($n$ times) on $X$ with an open orbit. In 2017 Baohua Fu and Jun-Muk Hwang introduced a class of Euler-symmetric varieties. They gave a classification of Euler-symmetric varieties and proved that any Euler-symmetric variety admits an additive action. In this paper we show that in the case of projective toric var…
A conjecture of J. Huh and B. Sturmfels predicts that the sign of the Euler characteristic of a complex very affine variety depends only on the parity of the dimension. The conjecture is true for locally complete intersections. Beyond this case, we construct counterexamples with arbitrarily bad failure.
The notion of the orbifold Euler characteristic came from physics at the end of 80's. There were defined higher order versions of the orbifold Euler characteristic and generalized ("motivic") versions of them. In a previous paper the authors defined a notion of the Grothendieck ring $K_0^{\rm fGr}(Var)$ of varieties with actions of finite groups on which the orbifold Euler characteristic and its higher order versions are homomorphisms to the ring of integers. Here we define the generalized orbifold Euler characteristic and higher order versions of it as ring homomorphisms from $K_0^{\rm fGr}(V…
Let X be a complete toric variety and let Y be a smooth projective variety with Picard number one. We prove that, if there exists a surjective morphism from X to Y, then Y is a projective space.
We prove a case of a positivity conjecture of Mihalcea-Singh, concerned with the local Euler obstructions associated to the Schubert stratification of the Lagrangian Grassmannian LG(n,2n). Combined with work of Aluffi-Mihalcea-Schürmann-Su, this further implies the positivity of the Mather classes for Schubert varieties in LG(n,2n), which Mihalcea-Singh had verified for the other cominuscule spaces of classical Lie type. Building on the work of Boe and Fu, we give a positive recursion for the local Euler obstructions, and use it to show that they provide a positive count of admissible labeling…
In characteristic zero, if a quotient variety has a crepant resolution, the Euler characteristic of the crepant resolution is equal to the number of conjugacy classes of the acting group, by Batyrev's theorem. This is one of the McKay correspondence. It is natural to consider the analogue statement in the positive characteristic. In this paper, we present sequences of crepant resolutions of quotient varieties in the positive characteristic and show that one of the sequences gives a counterexample to the analogue statement of Batyrev's theorem.
We study smooth complex projective varieties $X$ of maximal Albanese dimension and of general type satisfying with vanishing holomorphic Euler characteristic. We prove that the Albanese variety of $X$ has at least three simple factors. Examples were constructed by Ein and Lazarsfeld, and we prove that in dimension 3, these examples are (up to abelian étale covers) the only ones. By results of Ueno, another source of examples is provided by varieties $X$ of maximal Albanese dimension and of general type with $p_g(X)=1$. Examples were constructed by Chen and Hacon, and again, we prove that in di…
In this note we studied the primitive varieties of general type with $q(X) = dim(X)$ and non-birational bicanonical maps. Let $X$ be such a variety. We bounded the degree of its bicanonical map. If moreover the Albanese variety $Alb(X)$ is simple, we proved that the Euler number $χ(ω_X) = 1$, and $|2K_X|$ separates the points mapped to the same general point via the Albanese map.
It was shown by Kuznetsov that complete intersections of $n$ generic quadrics in ${\mathbb P}^{2n-1}$ are related by Homological Projective Duality to certain non-commutative (Clifford) varieties which are in some sense birational to double covers of ${\mathbb P}^{n-1}$ ramified over symmetric determinantal hypersurfaces. Mirror symmetry predicts that the Hodge numbers of the complete intersections of quadrics must coincide with the appropriately defined Hodge numbers of these double covers. We observe that these numbers must be different from the well-known Batyrev's stringy Hodge numbers, el…
We extend the descent theory of Colliot-Thélène and Sansuc to arbitrary smooth algebraic varieties by removing the condition that every invertible regular function is constant. This links the Brauer--Manin obstruction for integral points on arithmetic schemes to the obstructions defined by torsors under groups of multiplicative type.
We present an algorithm for the symbolic and numerical computation of the degrees of the Chern-Schwartz-MacPherson classes of a closed subvariety of projective space P^n. As the degree of the top Chern-Schwartz-MacPherson class is the topological Euler characteristic, this also yields a method to compute the topological Euler characteristic of projective varieties. The method is based on Aluffi's symbolic algorithm to compute degrees of Chern-Schwartz-MacPherson classes, a symbolic method to compute degrees of Segre classes, and the regenerative cascade by Hauenstein, Sommese and Wampler. The …
In part I we reduced the arithmetic (characteristic zero) version of the P \not \subseteq NP conjecture to the problem of showing that a variety associated with the complexity class NP cannot be embedded in the variety associated the complexity class P. We call these class varieties. In this paper, this approach is developed further, reducing the nonexistence problems, such as the P vs. NP and related lower bound problems, to existence problems: specifically to proving existence of obstructions to such embeddings among class varieties. It gives two results towards explicit construction of such…
Let $k$ be a number field. In the spirit of a result by Yongqi Liang, we relate the arithmetic of rational points over finite extensions of $k$ to that of zero-cycles over $k$ for Kummer varieties over $k$. For example, for any Kummer variety $X$ over $k$, we show that if the Brauer-Manin obstruction is the only obstruction to the Hasse principle for rational points on $X$ over all finite extensions of $k$, then the ($2$-primary) Brauer-Manin obstruction is the only obstruction to the Hasse principle for zero-cycles of any given odd degree on $X$ over $k$. We also obtain similar results for pr…
We define a Grothendieck ring of varieties with finite groups actions and show that the orbifold Euler characteristic and the Euler characteristics of higher orders can be defined as homomorphisms from this ring to the ring of integers. We describe two natural $λ$-structures on the ring and the corresponding power structures over it and show that one of these power structures is effective. We define a Grothendieck ring of varieties with equivariant vector bundles and show that the generalized ("motivic") Euler characteristics of higher orders can be defined as homomorphisms from this ring to t…
