Comparison between single- and the poly-crystalline structures provides essential information on the role of long-range translational symmetry and grain boundaries. In particular, by comparing single- and poly-crystalline transition metal oxides (TMOs), one can study intriguing physical phenomena such as electronic and ionic conduction at the grain boundaries, phonon propagation, and various domain properties. In order to make an accurate comparison, however, both single- and poly-crystalline samples should have the same quality, e.g., stoichiometry, crystallinity, thickness, etc. Here, by studying the surface properties of atomically flat poly-crystalline SrTiO3 (STO), we propose an approach to simultaneously fabricate both single- and poly-crystalline epitaxial TMO thin films on STO substrates. In order to grow TMOs epitaxially with atomic precision, an atomically flat, single-terminated surface of the substrate is a prerequisite. We first examined (100), (110), and (111) oriented single-crystalline STO surfaces, which required different annealing conditions to achieve atomically flat surfaces, depending on the surface energy. A poly-crystalline STO surface was then prepared at the optimum condition for which all the domains with different crystallographic orientations could be successfully flattened. Based on our atomically flat poly-crystalline STO substrates, we envision expansion of the studies regarding theTMOdomains and grain boundaries.
Atomically-abrupt interfaces in transition metal oxide (TMO) heterostructures could host a variety of exotic condensed matter phases that may not be found in the bulk materials at equilibrium. A critical step in the development of such atomically-sharp interfaces is the deposition of atomically-smooth TMO thin films. Optimized deposition conditions exist for the growth of perovskite oxides. However, the deposition of rutile oxides, such as VO$_2$, with atomic-layer precision has been challenging. In this work, we used pulsed laser deposition (PLD) to grow atomically-smooth VO$_2$ thin films on…
We demonstrate high-quality epitaxial germanium (Ge) films on a metallic silicide, Fe3Si, grown directly on a Ge(111) substrate. Using molecular beam epitaxy techniques, we can obtain an artificially controlled arrangement of silicon (Si) or iron (Fe) atoms at the surface on Fe3Si(111). The Si-terminated Fe3Si(111) surface enables us to grow two-dimensional epitaxial Ge films, whereas the Fe-terminated one causes the three-dimensional epitaxial growth of Ge films. The high-quality Ge grown on the Si-terminated surface has almost no strain, meaning that the Ge films are not grown on the low-tem…
Based on first-principles calculations and symmetry analysis, we predict atomically thin ($1-N$ layers) 2H group-VIB TMDs $MX_2$ ($M$ = Mo, W; $X$ = S, Se, Te) are large-gap higher-order topological crystalline insulators protected by $C_3$ rotation symmetry. We explicitly demonstrate the nontrivial topological indices and existence of the hallmark corner states with quantized fractional charge for these familiar TMDs with large bulk optical band gaps ($1.64-1.95$ eV for the monolayers), which would facilitate the experimental detection by STM. We find that the well-defined corner states exist…
The ability to synthesize high-quality samples over large areas and at low cost is one of the biggest challenges during the developmental stage of any novel material. While chemical vapor deposition (CVD) methods provide a promising low-cost route for CMOS compatible, large-scale growth of materials, it often falls short of the high-quality demands in nanoelectronics and optoelectronics. We present large-scale CVD synthesis of single- and few- layered MoS2 using direct vapor-phase sulfurization of MoO2, which enables us to obtain extremely high-quality single-crystal monolayer MoS2 samples wit…
There is a great interest in the scientific community to perform calorimetry on samples having mass in the nanogram range. A detailed knowledge of the energy (heat) exchange in the fast growing family of micro- and nano-systems could provide valuable information about the chemistry and physics at the nano-scale. The possibility to have an atomically flat thermal probe represents an added value, because it provides the unique opportunity to perform Scanning Probe Microscopy (SPM) together with calorimetry. Here we report the fabrication, characterization, and calibration of atomically flat, sin…
We report that a deionized water etching and thermal annealing technique can be effective for preparing atomically-flat and singly-terminated surfaces of single crystalline SrTiO3 substrates. After a two-step thermal-annealing and deionized-water etching procedure, topography measured by atomic force microscopy shows the evolution of substrates from a rough to step-terraced surface structure. Lateral force microscopy confirms that the atomically-flat surfaces are singly-terminated. Moreover, this technique can be used to remove excessive strontium oxide or hydroxide composites segregated on th…

We provide a comprehensive account of the optical, electrical and mechanical properties that emerge from the self-assembly of colloidal nanocrystals or atomically precise nanoclusters into crystalline arrays with long-range order. We compare the correlation between the supercrystalline structure and these emergent properties with similar correlations in crystals of atoms to address the hypothesis that nanocrystals and nanoclusters exhibit quasi-atomic behaviour. We come to the conclusion that, effectively, this analogy is indeed justified, although the chemical origin for the same emergent pro…
We report on graphene-like exfoliation of the large-area crystalline films and ribbons of bismuth telluride with the thicknesses of a few atoms. It is demonstrated that bismuth telluride, the most important material for thermoelectric industry, can be mechanically separated into its building blocks -[Te-Bi-Te-Bi-Te]- atomic five-folds with the thickness of ~1 nm and even further - to subunits with smaller thicknesses. The atomically-thin crystals can be structured into suspended crystalline ribbons providing quantum confinement in two dimensions. The quasi two-dimensional (2-D) crystals of bis…
Deep subwavelength integration of high-definition plasmonic nanostructures is of key importance for the development of future optical nanocircuitry for high-speed communication, quantum computation and lab-on-a-chip applications. So far the experimental realization of proposed extended plasmonic networks consisting of multiple functional elements remains challenging, mainly due to the multi-crystallinity of commonly used thermally evaporated gold layers. Resulting structural imperfections in individual circuit elements will drastically reduce the yield of functional integrated nanocircuits. He…
Rock-salt lead selenide nanocrystals can be used as building blocks for large scale square superlattices via two-dimensional assembly of nanocrystals at a liquid-air interface followed by oriented attachment. Here we report measurements of the local density of states of an atomically coherent superlattice with square geometry made from PbSe nanocrystals. Controlled annealing of the sample permits the imaging of a clean structure and to reproducibly probe the band gap and the valence hole and conduction electron states. The measured band gap and peak positions are compared to the results of opt…
Epitaxial growth of single crystalline noble metals on dielectric substrates has received tremendous attention recently due to their technological potentials as low loss plasmonic materials. Currently there are two different growth approaches, each with its strengths and weaknesses. One adopts a sophisticated molecular beam epitaxial procedure to grow atomically smooth epitaxial Ag films. However, the procedure is rather slow and becomes impractical to grow films with thickness > 50 nm. Another approach adopts a growth process using rapid e-beam deposition which is capable of growing single cr…
Transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs), together with other two-dimensional (2D) materials have attracted great interest due to the unique optical and electrical properties of atomically thin layers. In order to fulfill their potential, developing large-area growth and understanding the properties of TMDCs have become crucial. Here, we used molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) to grow atomically thin MoSe$_2$ on GaAs(111)B. No intermediate compounds were detected at the interface of as-grown films. Careful optimization of the growth temperature can result in the growth of highly aligned films with o…
Atomically thin boron nitride (BN) nanosheets are important two-dimensional nanomaterials with many unique properties distinct from those of graphene, but the investigation of their mechanical properties still greatly lacks. Here we report that high-quality single-crystalline mono- and few-layer BN nanosheets are one of the strongest electrically insulating materials. More intriguingly, few-layer BN shows mechanical behaviors quite different from those of few-layer graphene under indentation. In striking contrast to graphene, whose strength decreases by more than 30% when the number of layers …
Large-area two-dimensional (2D) materials for technical applications can now be produced by chemical vapor deposition (CVD). Unfortunately, grain boundaries (GBs) are ubiquitously introduced as a result of the coalescence of grains with different crystallographic orientations. It is well known that the properties of materials largely depend on GB structures. Here, we carried out a systematic study on the GB structures in CVD-grown polycrystalline h-BN monolayer films by transmission electron microscope. Interestingly, most of these GBs are revealed to be formed via overlapping between neighbor…
The properties of metal-semiconductor junctions are often unpredictable because of non-ideal interfacial structures, such as interfacial defects or chemical reactions introduced at junctions. Black phosphorus (BP), an elemental two-dimensional (2D) semiconducting crystal, possesses the puckered atomic structure with high chemical reactivity, and the establishment of a realistic atomic-scale picture of BP's interface toward metallic contact has remained elusive. Here we examine the interfacial structures and properties of physically-deposited metals of various kinds on BP. We find that Au, Ag, …
We consider different structures, which can be obtained by polymerization of aromatic organic molecules under high pressures. These 2D and 3D covalently bonded organic polymers and their functionalization can pave the way to production of energy storage and conversion devices. High-pressure synthesis might serve as a useful hint for production of these structures and their functionalized analogs by means of wet chemical synthesis.
We fabricate large-area atomically thin MoS$_2$ layers through the direct transformation of crystalline molybdenum MoS$_2$ (MoO$_3$) by sulfurization at relatively low temperatures. The obtained MoS2 sheets are polycrystalline (~10-20 nm single-crystal domain size) with areas of up to 300x300 um$^2$ with 2-4 layers in thickness and show a marked p-type behaviour. The synthesized films are characterized by a combination of complementary techniques: Raman spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy and electronic transport measurements.
There is a demand for the manufacture of ultra low-loss metallic films with high-quality single crystals and surface for quantum optics and quantum information processing. Many researches are devoted to alternative materials, but silver is by far the most preferred low-loss material at optical and near-IR frequencies. Usually, epitaxial growth is used to deposit single-crystalline silver films, but they still suffer from losses and well-known deweting effect. Here we report the two-step approach for e-beam evaporation of atomically smooth single-crystalline metallic films. The proposed method …
Molecular dynamics simulations are carried out to investigate the dynamic behavior of the slip length in thin polymer films confined between atomically smooth thermal surfaces. For weak wall-fluid interactions, the shear rate dependence of the slip length acquires a distinct local minimum followed by a rapid growth at higher shear rates. With increasing fluid density, the position of the local minimum is shifted to lower shear rates. We found that the ratio of the shear viscosity to the slip length, which defines the friction coefficient at the liquid/solid interface, undergoes a transition fr…
Transition metal oxide thin films show versatile electrical, magnetic, and thermal properties which can be tailored by deliberately introducing macroscopic grain boundaries via polycrystalline solids. In this study, we focus on the modification of the magnetic and thermal transport properties by fabricating single- and polycrystalline epitaxial SrRuO3 thin films using pulsed laser epitaxy. Using epitaxial stabilization technique with atomically flat polycrystalline SrTiO3 substrate, epitaxial polycrystalline SrRuO3 thin film with crystalline quality of each grain comparable to that of single-c…
We report a detailed comparison on the role of a self-assembled monolayer (SAM) of dipolar molecules on the threshold voltage and charge carrier mobility of organic field-effect transistor (OFET) made of both amorphous and polycrystalline organic semiconductors. We show that the same relationship between the threshold voltage and the dipole-induced charges in the SAM holds when both types of devices are fabricated on strictly identical base substrates. Charge carrier mobilities, almost constant for amorphous OFET, are not affected by the dipole in the SAMs, while for polycrystalline OFET (pent…
The emergence of transition metal dichalcogenides (TMD) as crystalline atomically thin semiconductors has created a tremendous amount of scientific and technological interest. Many novel device concepts have been proposed and realized (1-3). Nonetheless, progress in k-space investigations of ground/excited state electronic structures has been slow due to the challenge to create large scale, laterally homogeneous samples. Taking advantage of recent advancements in chemical vapor deposition, here we create a wafer-size MoS2 monolayer with well-aligned lateral orientation for advanced electron sp…

Recent progress in large-area synthesis of monolayer molybdenum disulfide, a new two-dimensional direct-bandgap semiconductor, is paving the way for applications in atomically thin electronics. Little is known, however, about the microstructure of this material. Here we have refined chemical vapor deposition synthesis to grow highly crystalline islands of monolayer molybdenum disulfide up to 120 um in size with optical and electrical properties comparable or superior to exfoliated samples. Using transmission electron microscopy, we correlate lattice orientation, edge morphology, and crystallin…

Typical device architectures in polymer-based optoelectronic devices, such as field effect transistors organic light emitting diodes and photovoltaic cells include sub-100 nm semiconducting polymer thin-film active layers, whose microstructure is likely to be subject to finite-size effects. The aim of this study was to investigate effect of the two-dimensional spatial confinement on the internal structure of the semiconducting polymer poly(9,9-dioctylfluorene) (PFO). PFO melts were confined inside the cylindrical nanopores of anodic aluminium oxide (AAO) templates and crystallized via two crys…
The extraordinary properties of two dimensional (2D) materials, such as the extremely high carrier mobility in graphene and the large direct band gaps in transition metal dichalcogenides MX2 (M = Mo or W, X = S, Se) monolayers, highlight the crucial role quantum confinement can have in producing a wide spectrum of technologically important electronic properties. Currently one of the highest priorities in the field is to search for new 2D crystalline systems with structural and electronic properties that can be exploited for device development. In this letter, we report on the unusual quantum t…
The success of isolating small flakes of atomically thin layers through mechanical exfoliation has triggered enormous research interest in graphene and other two-dimensional materials. For device applications, however, controlled large-area synthesis of highly crystalline monolayers with a low density of electronically active defects is imperative. Here, we demonstrate the electrical imaging of dendritic ad-layers and grain boundaries in monolayer molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) grown by vapor transport technique using microwave impedance microscopy. The micrometer-sized precipitates in our films,…
We elucidate the crystalline nature and the three-dimensional orientation of isolated organic nanocrystals embedded in a sol-gel matrix, using a polarized nonlinear microscopy technique that combines two-photon fluorescence and second harmonic generation. This technique allows the distinction between mono-crystalline structures and nano-scale poly-crystalline aggregates responsible for incoherent second harmonic signals.

We present a multi-scale computational framework suitable for designing solid lubricant interfaces fully in silico. The approach is based on stochastic thermodynamics founded on the classical thermally activated two-dimensional Prandtl-Tomlinson model, linked with First Principles methods to accurately capture the properties of real materials. It allows investigating the energy dissipation due to friction in materials as it arises directly from their electronic structure, and naturally accessing the time-scale range of a typical friction force microscopy. This opens new possibilities for desig…
Semi-empirical quantum chemistry methods offer a very interesting compromise between accuracy and computational load. In order to assess the performance of NDDO methods in the interpretation of terahertz spectra, the low frequency vibration modes of three crystalline materials, namely, polyethylene, poly(vinylidene fluoride) form II and $α$-D-glucose have been studied using the PM6 and PM7 Hamiltonians and the results have been compared with the experimental data and former calculations. The results show good qualitative or semi-quantitative agreement with the experimentally observed terahertz…
Monolithic integration of III-V optoelectronic devices with materials for various functionalities inexpensively is always desirable. Polysilicon (poly-Si) is an ideal platform because it is dopable and semi-conducting and can be deposited and patterned easily on a wide range of low cost substrates. However, the lack of crystalline coherency in poly-Si poses an immense challenge for high-quality epitaxial growth. In this work, we demonstrate, for the first time, direct growth of micron-sized InGaAs/GaAs nanopillars on polysilicon. Transmission electron microscopy shows that the micron-sized pil…
We present a Monte Carlo study of the surface anchoring of a nematic fluid on swollen layers of grafted liquid crystalline chain molecules. The liquid crystalline particles are modeled by soft repulsive ellipsoids, and the chains are made of the same particles. An appropriately modified version of the configurational bias Monte Carlo algorithm is introduced, which removes and redistributes chain bonds rather than whole monomers. With this algorithm, a wide range of grafting densities could be studied. The substrate is chosen such that it favors a planar orientation (parallel to the surface). D…
We present dielectric measurements of the colossal dielectric constant material CaCu3Ti4O12 extending up to 1.3 GHz also covering so far only rarely investigated single crystalline samples. Special emphasis is put on the second relaxation reported in several works on polycrystals, which we detect also in single crystals. For polycrystalline samples we provide a recipe to achieve values of the dielectric constant as high as in single crystals.
We present magnetisation data on crystalline and polycrystalline MgB2 before and after irradiation with ~1MeV protons. In the virgin crystal the critical current density is below our noise floor of 103A/cm2 over most of the field range. However, after irradiation a peak occurs in the current density as a function of applied magnetic field as the upper critical field Hc2 is approached. After subsequent ageing over a time period of three months, the peak effect is greatly enhanced, exhibiting much stronger pinning over a wide field range, and the upper critical field is approximately doubled, ac…
We report the synthesis of complex salts made from the cationic surfactant dodecyltrimethyl-ammonium and diblock copolymers poly(acrylic acid)-block-poly(acrylamide) of different molecular weights. In water, the complex salts self-assemble into stable hierarchical aggregates with a dense core and a diffuse shell. In contrast to earlier reports, the surfactant/polymer aggregates exhibit a liquid crystalline structure of Pm3n cubic symmetry. The crystal structure is analogous to that obtained with homopolymer. Size and aggregation numbers were estimated from a combination of light and small-angl…
The study of atomically thin two-dimensional materials is a young and rapidly growing field. In the past years, a great advance in the study of the remarkable electrical and optical properties of 2D materials fabricated by exfoliation of bulk layered materials has been achieved. Due to the extraordinary mechanical properties of these atomically thin materials, they also hold a great promise for future applications such as flexible electronics. For example, this family of materials can sustain very large deformations without breaking. Due to the combination of small dimensions, high Young's mod…
Understanding and controlling exciton transport is a strategic way to enhance the optoelectronic properties of high-performance organic devices. In this article we study triplet exciton migration in crystalline poly($p$-phenylene vinylene) polymer (PPV) using comprehensive electronic structure and quantum dynamical methods. We solve the coupled electron-nuclear dynamics for the triplet energy migrating between two neighboring Frenkel sites in J- and H-aggregate arrangements. From the two-site model we extract key parameters for use with a master-equation approach that allows us to treat nanosi…
