Typical device architectures in polymer-based optoelectronic devices, such as field effect transistors organic light emitting diodes and photovoltaic cells include sub-100 nm semiconducting polymer thin-film active layers, whose microstructure is likely to be subject to finite-size effects. The aim of this study was to investigate effect of the two-dimensional spatial confinement on the internal structure of the semiconducting polymer poly(9,9-dioctylfluorene) (PFO). PFO melts were confined inside the cylindrical nanopores of anodic aluminium oxide (AAO) templates and crystallized via two crystallization strategies, namely, in the presence or in the absence of a surface bulk reservoir located at the template surface. We show that highly textured semiconducting nanowires with tuneable crystal orientation can be thus produced. Moreover, our results indicate that employing the appropriate crystallization conditions extended-chain crystals can be formed in confinement. The results presented here demonstrate the simple fabrication and crystal engineering of ordered arrays of PFO nanowires; a system with potential applications in devices where anisotropic optical properties are required, such as polarized electroluminescence, waveguiding, optical switching, lasing, etc.
Control is exerted over the exciton-polariton physics in metal - Poly(9,9-dioctyl fluorene) - metal microcavities via conformational changes to the polymer backbone. Using thin-film samples containing increasing fractions of $β$-phase chain segments, a systematic study is reported for the mode characteristics and resulting light emission properties of cavities containing two distinct exciton sub-populations within the same semiconductor. Ultrastrong coupling for disordered glassy-phase excitons is observed from angle-resolved reflectivity measurements, with Rabi splitting energies in excess of…
Comparison between single- and the poly-crystalline structures provides essential information on the role of long-range translational symmetry and grain boundaries. In particular, by comparing single- and poly-crystalline transition metal oxides (TMOs), one can study intriguing physical phenomena such as electronic and ionic conduction at the grain boundaries, phonon propagation, and various domain properties. In order to make an accurate comparison, however, both single- and poly-crystalline samples should have the same quality, e.g., stoichiometry, crystallinity, thickness, etc. Here, by stu…
Necking or cold drawing is a smoothed jump in cross-sectional area of long and thin bars (filaments orfilms) propagating with a constant speed. The necks in polymers, first observed about seventy years ago, arenow commonly used in modern processing of polymer films and fibers. Yet till recently there was a lack infundamental understanding of necking mechanism(s). For semi-crystalline polymers with co-existingamorphous and crystalline phases, recent experiments revealed that such a mechanism is related tounfolding crystalline blocks. Using this idea, this paper develops a theoretical model and …
We consider different structures, which can be obtained by polymerization of aromatic organic molecules under high pressures. These 2D and 3D covalently bonded organic polymers and their functionalization can pave the way to production of energy storage and conversion devices. High-pressure synthesis might serve as a useful hint for production of these structures and their functionalized analogs by means of wet chemical synthesis.
The PEO3:LiCF3SO3 polymer electrolyte has attracted significant research due to its enhanced stability at the lithium/polymer interface of high conductivity polymer batteries. Experimental studies have shown that, depending on the preparation conditions, both the PEO3:LiCF3SO3 crystalline complex and the PEO3:LiCF3SO3 amorphous phase can be formed. However, previous theoretical investigations focused on the short chain amorphous PEO3:LiCF3SO3 system. We report ab initio density-functional-theory calculations of crystalline PEO3:LiCF3SO3. The calculated results about the bonding configuration, …
We calculate the electronic and optical excitations of polythiophene using the GW approximation for the electronic self-energy, and include excitonic effects by solving the electron-hole Bethe-Salpeter equation. Two different situations are studied: excitations on isolated chains and excitations on chains in crystalline polythiophene. The dielectric tensor for the crystalline situation is obtained by modeling the polymer chains as polarizable line objects, with a long-wavelength polarizability tensor obtained from the ab-initio polarizability function of the isolated chain. With this model die…
We report a detailed comparison on the role of a self-assembled monolayer (SAM) of dipolar molecules on the threshold voltage and charge carrier mobility of organic field-effect transistor (OFET) made of both amorphous and polycrystalline organic semiconductors. We show that the same relationship between the threshold voltage and the dipole-induced charges in the SAM holds when both types of devices are fabricated on strictly identical base substrates. Charge carrier mobilities, almost constant for amorphous OFET, are not affected by the dipole in the SAMs, while for polycrystalline OFET (pent…
Precise determination of the solid-state microstructure of semiconducting polymers is of paramount importance for the further development of these materials in various organic electronic technologies. Yet, prior characterization of the ordering of semiconducting polymers often resulted in conundrums in which X-ray scattering and microscopy yielded seemingly contradicting results. Here, based on fast scanning calorimetry, we introduce for the first time the concept of the semi-para-crystallinity and measurement of the degree of para-crystallinity (ordered volume/mass fraction) in a set of mater…
The gas permeation behavior in the single crystal of syndiotactic polystyrene (s-PS) S-I form was investigated in detail, in comparison to that in the s-PS $\varepsilon$ form. The S-I form exhibits high CO$_2$/N$_2$ and CO$_2$/CH$_4$ separation factors while preserving its high CO$_2$ permeability; a trade-off between selectivity and permeability was broken through. The mechanism of the effective and efficient transport of CO$_2$ in the S-I form was examined in relation to the cavity structure in the crystal. Because the CO$_2$ molecule is only fitted to the cavities in the S-I form, the solubi…
We studied the formation of the liquid-crystalline (LC) phase in a poly(di-n-hexylsilane)(PDHS) film at the heating above the thermochromic transition temperature and its evolution.
We investigate the atomistic mechanism of homogeneous nucleation during solidification in molybdenum employing transition path sampling. The mechanism is characterized by the formation of a pre-structured region of high bond-orientational order in the supercooled liquid followed by the nucleation of the crystalline bulk phase within the center of the growing solid cluster. This precursor plays a crucial role in the process, as it provides a diffusive interface between the liquid and crystalline core, which lowers the interfacial free energy and facilitates the nucleation of the bulk phase. Fur…
This paper proposes a physio-chemically-based constitutive framework to simulate and predict the response of semi-crystalline low-density polyethylene (LDPE) to severe photo-oxidation. Photo-oxidation induced by exposure to Ultra-Violet (UV) light and oxygen is the dominant degradation mechanism affecting the lifespan of LDPE. In this work, we propose evolution functions for the material properties in the constitutive equations of \cite{boyce2000constitutive} to incorporate the effects of photo-oxidation on the mechanical response of LDPE. The evolution functions are based on chemically verifi…
In this paper we present a Path Integral Monte Carlo (PIMC) simulation of the orthorhombic phase of crystalline polyethylene, using an explicit atom force field with unconstrained bond lengths and angles. This work represents a quantum extension of our recent classical simulation (J. Chem. Phys. 106, 8918 (1997)). It is aimed both at exploring the applicability of the PIMC method on such polymer crystal systems, as well as on a detailed assessment of the importance of quantum effects on different quantities. We used the $NpT$ ensemble and simulated the system at zero pressure in the temperatur…
Magnetic properties of A2BB'O6 (A = rare or alkaline earth ions; B,B' = transition metal ions) double perovskites are of great interest due to their potential spintronic applications. Particularly fascinating is the zero field cooled exchange bias (ZEB) effect observed for the hole doped La2-xAxCoMnO6 polycrystalline samples. In this work we synthesize La2CoMnO6, La1.5Ca0.5CoMnO6, and La1.5Sr0.5CoMnO6 single crystals by the floating zone method and study their magnetic behavior. The three materials are ferromagnetic. Surprisingly, we observe no zero or even conventional exchange bias effect fo…
Nanopapers based on graphene and related materials were recently proposed for application in heat spreader applications. To overcome typical limitations in brittleness of such materials, this work addressed the combination of graphite nanoplatelets (GNP) with a soft, tough and crystalline polymer, acting as an efficient binder between nanoplates. With this aim, polycaprolactone (PCL) was selected and exploited in this paper. The crystalline organization of PCL within the nanopaper was studied to investigate the effect of polymer confinement between GNP. Thermomechanical properties were studied…
Semi-empirical quantum chemistry methods offer a very interesting compromise between accuracy and computational load. In order to assess the performance of NDDO methods in the interpretation of terahertz spectra, the low frequency vibration modes of three crystalline materials, namely, polyethylene, poly(vinylidene fluoride) form II and $α$-D-glucose have been studied using the PM6 and PM7 Hamiltonians and the results have been compared with the experimental data and former calculations. The results show good qualitative or semi-quantitative agreement with the experimentally observed terahertz…
Monolithic integration of III-V optoelectronic devices with materials for various functionalities inexpensively is always desirable. Polysilicon (poly-Si) is an ideal platform because it is dopable and semi-conducting and can be deposited and patterned easily on a wide range of low cost substrates. However, the lack of crystalline coherency in poly-Si poses an immense challenge for high-quality epitaxial growth. In this work, we demonstrate, for the first time, direct growth of micron-sized InGaAs/GaAs nanopillars on polysilicon. Transmission electron microscopy shows that the micron-sized pil…
We report piezo-response force microscopy studies of the static and dynamic properties of domain walls (DWs) in 11 to 36 nm thick films of crystalline ferroelectric poly(vinylidene-fluoride-trifluorethylene). The DW roughness exponent ζ ranges from 0.39 to 0.48 and the DW creep exponent μ varies from 0.20 to 0.28, revealing an unexpected effective dimensionality of ~1.5 that is independent of film thickness. Our results suggest predominantly 2D ferroelectricity in the layered polymer and we attribute the fractal dimensionality to DW deroughening due to the correlations between the in-plane and…
We have computed second and third nonlinear optical susceptibilities of two crystalline bulk tellurium oxide polymorphs: $α$-TeO$_{2}$ (the most stable crystalline bulk phase) and $γ$-TeO$_{2}$ (the crystalline phase that ressembles the more to the glass phase. Third order nonlinear susceptibilities of the crystalline phases are two orders of magnitude larger than $α$-SiO$_{2}$ cristoballite, thus extending the experimental observations on glasses to the case of crystalline compounds. While the electronic lone pairs of Te contribute to those large values, a full explanation of the anisotropy o…
While the microscopic structure of defected solid crystalline materials has significant impact on their physical properties, efficient and accurate determination of a given polycrystalline microstructure remains a challenge. In this paper we present a highly generalizable and reliable variational method to achieve this goal for two-dimensional crystalline and quasicrystalline materials. The method is benchmarked and optimized successfully using a variety of large-scale systems of defected solids, including periodic structures and quasicrystalline symmetries to quantify their microstructural ch…
We perform ab initio calculations of optical properties for a typical semiconductor conjugated polymer, poly-para-phenylenevinylene, in both isolated chain and crystalline packing. In order to obtain results for excitonic energies and real-space wavefunctions we explicitly include electron-hole interaction within the density-matrix formalism. We find that the details of crystalline arrangement crucially affect the optical properties, leading to a richer exciton structure and opening non-radiative decay channels. This has implications for the optical activity and optoelectronic applications of …
The effect of thermal structural fluctuations on the modulation of the transfer integrals between close molecules is studied using a combination of molecular dynamics simulations and quantum chemical calculations of the transfer integral. We have found that the fluctuations of the transfer integrals are of the same order of magnitude of their average value for two common organic semiconductors an observation that puts into question the currently adopted models for charge transport in organic semiconductors and identifies in the dynamic electronic disorder the limiting factor for the charge car…
Modeling the Dielectric Relaxation in Semicrystalline Polymers -- Understanding the Role of the Interphase between the Amorphous and Crystalline Domains
We present a Monte Carlo study of the surface anchoring of a nematic fluid on swollen layers of grafted liquid crystalline chain molecules. The liquid crystalline particles are modeled by soft repulsive ellipsoids, and the chains are made of the same particles. An appropriately modified version of the configurational bias Monte Carlo algorithm is introduced, which removes and redistributes chain bonds rather than whole monomers. With this algorithm, a wide range of grafting densities could be studied. The substrate is chosen such that it favors a planar orientation (parallel to the surface). D…
We present dielectric measurements of the colossal dielectric constant material CaCu3Ti4O12 extending up to 1.3 GHz also covering so far only rarely investigated single crystalline samples. Special emphasis is put on the second relaxation reported in several works on polycrystals, which we detect also in single crystals. For polycrystalline samples we provide a recipe to achieve values of the dielectric constant as high as in single crystals.
We present magnetisation data on crystalline and polycrystalline MgB2 before and after irradiation with ~1MeV protons. In the virgin crystal the critical current density is below our noise floor of 103A/cm2 over most of the field range. However, after irradiation a peak occurs in the current density as a function of applied magnetic field as the upper critical field Hc2 is approached. After subsequent ageing over a time period of three months, the peak effect is greatly enhanced, exhibiting much stronger pinning over a wide field range, and the upper critical field is approximately doubled, ac…
The photoinduced 3D orientational structures in the films of liquid crystalline polyester, containing azobenzene side groups, are studied both experimentally and theoretically. By using the null ellipsometry and the UV absorption methods, preferential in-plane alignment of the azobenzene fragments and in-plane reorientation under irradiation with polarized UV light are established. The uniaxial and biaxial orientational configurations of the azobenzene chromophores are detected. The biaxiality is observed in the intermediate stages of irradiation, whereas the uniaxial structure is maintained i…
We report a novel multi-scale simulation methodology to quantitatively predict the thermodynamic behaviour of polymer mixtures, that exhibit phases with broken orientational symmetry. Our system consists of a binary mixture of oligomers and rod-like mesogens. Using coarse-grained molecular dynamics (CGMD) simulations we infer the topology of the temperature-dependent free energy landscape from the probability distributions of excess volume fraction of the components. The mixture exhibits nematic and smectic phases as a function of two temperature scales, the nematic-isotropic temperature $T_{N…
We report the synthesis of complex salts made from the cationic surfactant dodecyltrimethyl-ammonium and diblock copolymers poly(acrylic acid)-block-poly(acrylamide) of different molecular weights. In water, the complex salts self-assemble into stable hierarchical aggregates with a dense core and a diffuse shell. In contrast to earlier reports, the surfactant/polymer aggregates exhibit a liquid crystalline structure of Pm3n cubic symmetry. The crystal structure is analogous to that obtained with homopolymer. Size and aggregation numbers were estimated from a combination of light and small-angl…
We report on a non-equilibrium phase of matter, the minimally disordered crystal phase, which we find exists between the maximally amorphous glasses and the ideal crystal. Even though these near crystals appear highly ordered, they display glassy and jamming features akin to those observed in amorphous solids. Structurally, they exhibit a power-law scaling in their probability distribution of weak forces and small interparticle gaps as well as a flat density of vibrational states. Dynamically, they display anomalous aging above a characteristic pressure. Quantitatively this disordered crystal …
As the periodicity in crystalline materials creates the optimal condition for electronic delocalization, one might expect that in partially crystalline conjugated polymers delocalization is impeded by intergrain transport. However, for the best conducting polymers this presumption fails. Delocalization is obstructed by interchain rather than intergrain charge transfer and we propose a model of weakly coupled disordered chains to describe the physics near the metal-insulator transition. Our quantitative calculations match the outcome of recent broad-band optical experiments and provide a consis…
Understanding and controlling exciton transport is a strategic way to enhance the optoelectronic properties of high-performance organic devices. In this article we study triplet exciton migration in crystalline poly($p$-phenylene vinylene) polymer (PPV) using comprehensive electronic structure and quantum dynamical methods. We solve the coupled electron-nuclear dynamics for the triplet energy migrating between two neighboring Frenkel sites in J- and H-aggregate arrangements. From the two-site model we extract key parameters for use with a master-equation approach that allows us to treat nanosi…
A coarse-grained molecular dynamics model of linear polyethylene-like polymer chain system was built to investigate the responds of structure and mechanical properties during uniaxial deformation. The influence of chain length, temperature, and strain rate were studied. The molecular dynamic tests showed that yielding may governed by different mechanisms at temperatures above and below Tg. Melt-recrystallization was observed at higher temperature, and destruction of crystal structures was observed at lower temperatures beyond yield point. While the higher temperature and lower strain rate have…
Computational studies addressing the adsorption of fluids in nano-porous materials mostly use ideal single crystal models of the adsorbent. While a few recent studies have tried to address the effects of inter-crystalline spacing on the adsorption of fluids in polycrystalline models of nano-porous materials, the effects of the orientational disorder in the polycrystalline adsorbent remain unexplored. Here we report the adsorption of SO$_2$, an industrially and environmentally important gas, in ZSM-22, a zeolite characterized by straight channel like pores. The simple pore geometry of ZSM-22 he…

Targeting specific technological applications requires the control of nanoparticle properties, especially the crystalline polymorph. Freezing a nanodroplet deposited on a solid substrate leads to the formation of crystalline structures. We study the inherent mechanisms underlying this general phenomenon by means of molecular dynamics simulations. Our work shows that different crystal structures can be selected by finely tuning the solid substrate lattice parameter. Indeed, while for our system, face-centered cubic is usually the most preponderant structure, the growth of two distinct polymorph…
In this article we demonstrate that a grating fabricated through nanoscale volumetric crosslinking of a liquid crystalline polymer enables remote polarization control over the diffracted channels. This functionality is a consequence of the responsivity of liquid crystal networks upon light stimuli. Tuning the photonic response of the device is obtained thanks to both a refractive index and a shape change of the grating elements induced by a molecular rearrangement under irradiation. In particular, the material anisotropy allows for nontrivial polarization state management over multiple beams. …
The stability of organic solar cells is strongly affected by the morphology of the photoactive layers, whose separated crystalline and/or amorphous phases are kinetically quenched far from their thermodynamic equilibrium during the production process. The evolution of these structures during the lifetime of the cell remains poorly understood. In this paper, a phase-field simulation framework is proposed, handling liquid-liquid demixing and polycrystalline growth at the same time in order to investigate the evolution of crystalline immiscible binary systems. We find that initially, the nuclei t…
