We perform Monte-Carlo simulations of the three-dimensional Ising model at the critical temperature and zero magnetic field. We simulate the system in a ball with free boundary conditions on the two dimensional spherical boundary. Our results for one and two point functions in this geometry are consistent with the predictions from the conjectured conformal symmetry of the critical Ising model.
The constraints of conformal bootstrap are applied to investigate a set of conformal field theories in various dimensions. The prescriptions can be applied to both unitary and non unitary theories allowing for the study of the spectrum of low-lying primary operators of the theory. We evaluate the lowest scaling dimensions of the local operators associated with the Yang-Lee edge singularity for $2 \le D \le 6$. Likewise we obtain the scaling dimensions of six scalars and four spinning operators for the 3d critical Ising model. Our findings are in agreement with existing results to a per mill pr…
In a recent preprint [ArXiv 1802.02319], Meneses et al. challenge our proof that scale invariance implies conformal invariance for the three-dimensional Ising model [B. Delamotte, M. Tissier and N. Wschebor, Phys. Rev. E 93 (2016), 012144.]. We refute their arguments. We also point out a mistake in their one-loop calculation of the dimension of the vector operator $V_μ$ of lowest dimension which is not a total derivative.
Using Wilson renormalization group, we show that if no integrated vector operator of scaling dimension $-1$ exists, then scale invariance implies conformal invariance. By using the Lebowitz inequalities, we prove that this necessary condition is fulfilled in all dimensions for the Ising universality class. This shows, in particular, that scale invariance implies conformal invariance for the three-dimensional Ising model.
We consider the question of conformal invariance of the long-range Ising model at the critical point. The continuum description is given in terms of a nonlocal field theory, and the absence of a stress tensor invalidates all of the standard arguments for the enhancement of scale invariance to conformal invariance. We however show that several correlation functions, computed to second order in the epsilon expansion, are nontrivially consistent with conformal invariance. We proceed to give a proof of conformal invariance to all orders in the epsilon expansion, based on the description of the lon…
How can a renormalization group fixed point be scale invariant without being conformal? Polchinski (1988) showed that this may happen if the theory contains a virial current -- a non-conserved vector operator of dimension exactly $(d-1)$, whose divergence expresses the trace of the stress tensor. We point out that this scenario can be probed via lattice Monte Carlo simulations, using the critical 3d Ising model as an example. Our results put a lower bound $Δ_V>5.0$ on the scaling dimension of the lowest virial current candidate $V$, well above 2 expected for the true virial current. This impli…
We present a new method to identify the Boundary Conformal Field Theories (BCFTs) describing the critical points of the Ising model on the strip. It consists in measuring the low-lying excitation energies spectra of its quantum spin chain for different boundary conditions and then to compare them with those of the different boundary conformal field theories of the $(A_2,A_3)$ minimal model.
We propose a general method for the numerical evaluation of OPE coefficients in three dimensional Conformal Field Theories based on the study of the conformal perturbation of two point functions in the vicinity of the critical point. We test our proposal in the three dimensional Ising Model, looking at the magnetic perturbation of the $<σ(\mathbf {r})σ(0)>$, $<σ(\mathbf {r})ε(0)>$ and $<ε(\mathbf {r})ε(0)>$ correlators from which we extract the values of $C^σ_{σε}=1.07(3)$ and $C^ε_{εε}=1.45(30)$. Our estimate for $C^σ_{σε}$ agrees with those recently obtained using conformal bootstrap methods…
We construct a conformal map from $\mathbb{R}^3$ to a three-dimensional spheriod, which includes $\mathbb{S}^3$, a double-cover of the 3-ball, and $\mathbb{R} \times \mathbb{S}^2$ as limiting cases. Using the data of the critical three-dimensional Ising model on $\mathbb{R}^3$ that was computed using the conformal bootstrap method, we numerically estimate the fourth-order Binder cumulant of the critical three-dimensional $ϕ^4$ theory on $\mathbb{S}^3$. We expect this estimate will enable an interesting comparison between the conformal bootstrap and future calculations of critical $ϕ^4$ theory …
We consider the entanglement entropy for the 2D Ising model at the conformal fixed point in the presence of interfaces. More precisely, we investigate the situation where the two subsystems are separated by a defect line that preserves conformal invariance. Using the replica trick, we compute the entanglement entropy between the two subsystems. We observe that the entropy, just like in the case without defects, shows a logarithmic scaling behavior with respect to the size of the system. Here, the prefactor of the logarithm depends on the strength of the defect encoded in the transmission coeff…
The single-correlator conformal bootstrap is solved numerically for several values of dimension 4>d>2 using the available SDPB and Extremal Functional methods. Critical exponents and other conformal data of low-lying states are obtained over the entire range of dimensions with up to four-decimal precision and then compared with several existing results. The conformal dimensions of leading-twist fields are also determined up to high spin, and their d-dependence shows how the conformal states rearrange themselves around d=2.2 for matching the Virasoro conformal blocks in the d=2 limit. The decou…
Recent numerical results point to the existence of a conformally invariant twist defect in the critical 3d Ising model. In this note we show that this fact is supported by both epsilon expansion and conformal bootstrap calculations. We find that our results are in good agreement with the numerical data. We also make new predictions for operator dimensions and OPE coefficients from the bootstrap approach. In the process we derive universal bounds on one-dimensional conformal field theories and conformal line defects.
We derive explicit expressions for the conformal blocks of the Ising conformal field theory, for the correlators of an arbitrary number of primary fields. These results are obtained from the bosonized description of the Ising model. Interestingly, correlators involving Majorana fermions, can be obtained in two different ways, giving rise to identities between the `bosonic' and `fermionic' description of these correlators. These identities are generalizations of the famous Cauchy-identity. The conformal blocks of the Ising model are used to derive expression for the conformal blocks of the su(2…
We study the constraints of crossing symmetry and unitarity in general 3D Conformal Field Theories. In doing so we derive new results for conformal blocks appearing in four-point functions of scalars and present an efficient method for their computation in arbitrary space-time dimension. Comparing the resulting bounds on operator dimensions and OPE coefficients in 3D to known results, we find that the 3D Ising model lies at a corner point on the boundary of the allowed parameter space. We also derive general upper bounds on the dimensions of higher spin operators, relevant in the context of th…
Thanks to the impressive progress of conformal bootstrap methods we have now very precise estimates of both scaling dimensions and OPE coefficients for several 3D universality classes. We show how to use this information to obtain similarly precise estimates for off-critical correlators using conformal perturbation. We discuss in particular the $< σ(r) σ(0) >$, $< ε(r) ε(0) >$ and $< σ(r) ε(0) >$ two point functions in the high and low temperature regimes of the 3D Ising model and evaluate the leading and next to leading terms in the $s = t r^{Δ_{t}}$ expansion, where $t$ is the reduced temper…
We formulate the conformal mapping between $R^3$ and $S^3$, the 3 sphere. This mapping is applied to the critical Ising model. From this mapping, we calculate the second and fourth moments of the magnetization density, and using those quantities calculate the 4th Binder cumulant. Our calculations for the critical 3D Ising Model on a 3 sphere are done using Mathematica's Monte Carlo Integration feature. The main motivation for performing this calculation is so we can later compare it to what the Quantum Elemental Method predicts.
The $d=2$ critical Ising model is described by an exactly solvable Conformal Field Theory (CFT). The deformation to $d=2+ε$ is a relatively simple system at strong coupling outside of even dimensions. Using novel numerical and analytical conformal bootstrap methods in Lorentzian signature, we show that the leading corrections to the Ising data are more singular than $ε$. There must be infinitely many new states due to the $d$-dependence of conformal symmetry. The linear independence of conformal blocks is central to this bootstrap approach, which can be extended to more rigorous studies of non…
We calculate the $N$ interval replicated negativity for the Ising and free compact boson conformal field theory using correlation functions of branch point twist fields. For some subset $P\subset N$, this is a calculation of $\rm{Tr}(ρ_A^{T_P})^n$ where $n$ is the replica index. This can be reformulated as a calculation of partition functions over superelliptic Riemann surfaces, and for the models in question, this partition function can be expressed in terms of the period matrix of this surface. We detail how to construct the period matrices for these surfaces, giving an analytic expression f…
Given a consistent choice of conformally invariant boundary conditions in a two dimensional conformal field theory, one can construct new consistent boundary conditions by deforming with a relevant boundary operator and flowing to the infrared, or by a marginal deformation. Open string field theory provides a very universal tool to discover and study such new boundary theories. Surprisingly, it also allows one to go in the reverse direction and to uncover solutions with higher boundary entropy. We will illustrate our results on the well studied example of Ising model.
We study the tricritical Ising universality class using conformal bootstrap techniques. By studying bootstrap constraints originating from multiple correlators on the CFT data of multiple OPEs, we are able to determine the scaling dimension of the spin field $Δ_σ$ in various non-integer dimensions $2 \le d \le 3$. $Δ_σ$ is connected to the critical exponent $η$ that governs the (tri-)critical behaviour of the two point function via the relation, $η= 2 - d + 2 Δ_σ$. Our results for $Δ_σ$ match with the exactly known values in two and three dimensions and are a conjecture for non-integer dimensi…
Given a conformal data on a flat Euclidean space, we use crosscap conformal bootstrap equations to numerically solve the Lee-Yang model as well as the critical Ising model on a three-dimensional real projective space. We check the rapid convergence of our bootstrap program in two-dimensions from the exact solutions available. Based on the comparison, we estimate that our systematic error on the numerically solved one-point functions of the critical Ising model on a three-dimensional real projective space is less than one percent. Our method opens up a novel way to solve conformal field theorie…
We use the conformal bootstrap to perform a precision study of the operator spectrum of the critical 3d Ising model. We conjecture that the 3d Ising spectrum minimizes the central charge c in the space of unitary solutions to crossing symmetry. Because extremal solutions to crossing symmetry are uniquely determined, we are able to precisely reconstruct the first several Z2-even operator dimensions and their OPE coefficients. We observe that a sharp transition in the operator spectrum occurs at the 3d Ising dimension Delta_sigma=0.518154(15), and find strong numerical evidence that operators de…
It is widely expected that the realization of scale invariance in the critical regime implies conformal invariance for a large class of systems. This is known to be true if there exist no integrated operator which transforms like a vector under rotations and which has scaling dimension $-1$. In this article we give exact expressions for the critical exponents of some of these vector operators. In particular, we show that one operator has scaling dimension exactly 3 in any space dimension. This operator turns out be the leading operator at least in $d=2$ and $d=4$. Moreover, we prove that the o…
We consider the conformal bootstrap for spacetime dimension $1<d<2$. We determine bounds on operator dimensions and compare our results with various theoretical and numerical models, in particular with resummed $ε$-expansion and Monte Carlo simulations of the Ising model on fractal lattices. The bounds clearly rule out that these models correspond to unitary conformal field theories. We also clarify the $d\to 1$ limit of the conformal bootstrap, showing that bounds can be - and indeed are - discontinuous in this limit. This discontinuity implies that for small $ε=d-1$ the expected critical exp…
We explain how the axioms of Conformal Field Theory are used to make predictions about critical exponents of continuous phase transitions in three dimensions, via a procedure called the conformal bootstrap. The method assumes conformal invariance of correlation functions, and imposes some relations between correlation functions of different orders. Numerical analysis shows that these conditions are incompatible unless the critical exponents take particular values, or more precisely that they must belong to a small island in the parameter space.

We review the algebraic and analytic aspects of the conformal field theory (CFT) and its relation to the stochastic Loewner evolution (SLE) in an example of the Ising model. We obtain the scaling limit of the correlation functions of Ising free fermions on an arbitrary simply connected two-dimensional domain $D$. Then, we study the analytic and algebraic aspects of the fermionic CFT on $D$, using the Fock space formalism of fields, and the Clifford vertex operator algebra (VOA). These constructions lead to the conformal field theory of the Fock space fields and the fermionic Fock space of stat…
The fractal dimensions of polymer chains and high-temperature graphs in the Ising model both in three dimension are determined using the conformal bootstrap applied for the continuation of the $O(N)$ models from $N=1$ (Ising model) to $N=0$ (polymer). The unitarity bound below $N=1$ of the scaling dimension for the the $O(N)$-symmetric-tensor develops a kink as a function of the fundamental field as in the case of the energy operator dimension in the Ising model. Although this kink structure becomes less pronounced as $N$ tends to zero, an emerging asymmetric minimum in the current central cha…
Using the technique of mean field theory applied to the lattice boundary Ising and tricritical Ising models we provide a qualitative description of their boundary phase diagrams. We will show this is in agreement with the known picture from boundary conformal field theory and we shall compare our work with that of Cappelli et al and show how their analysis is not in accordance with the physical picture.
We study the conformal bootstrap in fractional space-time dimensions, obtaining rigorous bounds on operator dimensions. Our results show strong evidence that there is a family of unitary CFTs connecting the 2D Ising model, the 3D Ising model, and the free scalar theory in 4D. We give numerical predictions for the leading operator dimensions and central charge in this family at different values of D and compare these to calculations of phi^4 theory in the epsilon-expansion.
We compare the time evolution of entanglement measures after local operator excitation in the critical Ising model with predictions from conformal field theory. For the spin operator and its descendants we find that Renyi entropies of a block of spins increase by a constant that matches the logarithm of the quantum dimension of the conformal family. However, for the energy operator we find a small constant contribution that differs from the conformal field theory answer equal to zero. We argue that the mismatch is caused by the subtleties in the identification between the local operators in co…
We numerically obtain the conformal spectrum of several classical spin models on a two-dimensional lattice with open boundaries, for every boundary fixed point obtained by the Cardy's derivation [J. L. Cardy, Nucl. Phys. B 324, 581 (1989)]. In order to extract accurate conformal data, we implement the tensor network renormalization algorithm [G. Evenbly and G. Vidal, Phys. Rev. Lett. 115, 180405 (2015)] extended so as to be applicable to a square lattice with open boundaries. We successfully compute the boundary conformal spectrum consistent with the underlying boundary conformal field theorie…
We study 1+1 dimensional $ϕ^4$ theory using the recently proposed method of conformal truncation. Starting in the UV CFT of free field theory, we construct a complete basis of states with definite conformal Casimir, $\mathcal{C}$. We use these states to express the Hamiltonian of the full interacting theory in lightcone quantization. After truncating to states with $\mathcal{C} \leq \mathcal{C}_{\max}$, we numerically diagonalize the Hamiltonian at strong coupling and study the resulting IR dynamics. We compute non-perturbative spectral densities of several local operators, which are equivalen…
We study the Rényi entropies of N disjoint intervals in the conformal field theories given by the free compactified boson and the Ising model. They are computed as the 2N point function of twist fields, by employing the partition function of the model on a particular class of Riemann surfaces. The results are written in terms of Riemann theta functions. The prediction for the free boson in the decompactification regime is checked against exact results for the harmonic chain. For the Ising model, matrix product states computations agree with the conformal field theory result once the finite siz…
We consider the Ising model between 2 and 4 dimensions perturbed by quenched disorder in the strength of the interaction between nearby spins. In the interval 2<d<4 this disorder is a relevant perturbation that drives the system to a new fixed point of the renormalization group. At d=2 such disorder is marginally irrelevant and can be studied using conformal perturbation theory. Combining conformal perturbation theory with recent results from the conformal bootstrap we compute some scaling exponents in an expansion around d=2. If one trusts these computations also in d=3, one finds results con…
Based on conformal symmetry we propose an exact formula for the four-point connectivities of FK clusters in the critical Ising model when the four points are anchored to the boundary. The explicit solution we found displays logarithmic singularities. We check our prediction using Monte Carlo simulations on a triangular lattice, showing excellent agreement. Our findings could shed further light on the formidable task of the characterization of Logarithmic Conformal Field Theories and on their relevance in physics.
How large can anomalous dimensions be in conformal field theories? What can we do to attain larger values? One attempt to obtain large anomalous dimensions efficiently is to use the Pauli exclusion principle. Certain operators constructed out of constituent fermions cannot form bound states without introducing non-trivial excitations. To assess the efficiency of this mechanism, we compare them with the numerical conformal bootstrap bound as well as with other interacting field theory examples. In two dimensions, it turns out to be the most efficient: it saturates the bound and is located at th…
The critical 2d classical Ising model on the square lattice has two topological conformal defects: the $\mathbb{Z}_2$ symmetry defect $D_ε$ and the Kramers-Wannier duality defect $D_σ$. These two defects implement antiperiodic boundary conditions and a more exotic form of twisted boundary conditions, respectively. On the torus, the partition function $Z_{D}$ of the critical Ising model in the presence of a topological conformal defect $D$ is expressed in terms of the scaling dimensions $Δ_α$ and conformal spins $s_α$ of a distinct set of primary fields (and their descendants, or conformal towe…
