There has been recent interest in conformal twisted boundary conditions and their realisations in solvable lattice models. For the Ising and Potts quantum chains, these amount to boundary terms that are related to duality, which is a proper symmetry of the model at criticality. Thus, at criticality, the duality-twisted Ising model is translationally invariant, similar to the more familiar cases of periodic and antiperiodic boundary conditions. The complete finite-size spectrum of the Ising quantum chain with this peculiar boundary condition is obtained.
The Ising quantum chain with a peculiar twisted boundary condition is considered. This boundary condition, first introduced in the framework of the spin-1/2 XXZ Heisenberg quantum chain, is related to the duality transformation, which becomes a symmetry of the model at the critical point. Thus, at the critical point, the Ising quantum chain with the duality-twisted boundary is translationally invariant, similar as in the case of the usual periodic or antiperiodic boundary conditions. The complete energy spectrum of the Ising quantum chain is calculated analytically for finite systems, and the …
The partition function of the two-dimensional Ising model is exactly obtained on a lattice with a twisted boundary condition. The continuum limit of the model off the critical temperature is found to give the mass-deformed Ising conformal field theory (CFT) on the torus with the complex structure $τ$. We find that the renormalization group (RG) flow of the mass parameter can be holographically described in terms of the three-dimensional gravity including a scalar field with a simple nonlinear kinetic function and a quadratic potential.
We consider the worldsheet boundary scattering and the corresponding boundary algebras for the Z=0 giant graviton and the Z=0 D7-brane in the AdS/CFT correspondence. We consider two approaches to the boundary scattering, the usual one governed by the (generalized) twisted Yangians and the q-deformed model of these boundaries governed by the quantum affine coideal subalgebras. We show that the q-deformed approach leads to boundary algebras that are of a more compact form than the corresponding twisted Yangians, and thus are favourable to use for explicit calculations. We obtain the q-deformed r…
We generalize the twisted quantum double model of topological orders in two dimensions to the case with boundaries by systematically constructing the boundary Hamiltonians. Given the bulk Hamiltonian defined by a gauge group $G$ and a three-cocycle in the third cohomology group of $G$ over $U(1)$, a boundary Hamiltonian can be defined by a subgroup $K$ of $G$ and a two-cochain in the second cochain group of $K$ over $U(1)$. The consistency between the bulk and boundary Hamiltonians is dictated by what we call the Frobenius condition that constrains the two-cochain given the three-cocyle. We of…
We consider integrable field theories with achiral boundary conditions and uncover the underlying achiral twisted Yangian algebra. This construction arises from old work on the bosonic principal chiral model on a half-line, but finds a modern realization as the hidden symmetry in the planar limit of the scattering of worldsheet excitations of the AdS/CFT light-cone superstring off a D5-brane.
We study disk amplitudes whose boundaries have heterogeneous matter states in a system of $(4,5)$ conformal matter coupled to 2-dim gravity. They are analysed by using the 3-matrix chain model in the large $N$ limit. Each of the boundaries is composed of two or three parts with distinct matter states. From the obtained amplitudes, it turns out that each heterogeneous boundary loop splits into several loops and we can observe properties in the splitting phenomena that are common to each of them. We also discuss the relation to boundary operators.
We consider an unified model, called ancestor model, associated with twisted trigonometric $R$ matrix which model leads to several descendant integrable lattice models related to the U$_{q^{1/2}}(\hat{sl_2})$ symmetry. Boundary operators compatible with integrability are introduced to this model. Reflection and dual reflection equations to ensure integrability of the system are shown to be same as the untwisted case. It follows that underlying symmetry of the ancestor model with integrable boundaries is identified with the q-deformed analogue of Onsager's symmetry. The transfer matrix and its …

Based on the (quantum) twisted Yangians, integrable systems with special boundary conditions, called soliton non-preserving (SNP), may be constructed. In the present article we focus on the study of subalgebras of the (quantum) twisted Yangians, and we show that such a subalgebra provides an exact symmetry of the rational transfer matrix. We discuss how the spectrum of a generic transfer matrix may be obtained by focusing only on two types of special boundaries. It is also shown that the subalgebras, emerging from the asymptotics of tensor product representations of the (quantum) twisted Yangi…
Perturbing a CFT by a relevant operator on a half space and letting the perturbation flow to the far infrared we obtain an RG interface between the UV and IR CFTs. If the IR CFT is trivial we obtain an RG boundary condition. The space of massive perturbations thus breaks up into regions labelled by conformal boundary conditions of the UV fixed point. For the 2D critical Ising model perturbed by a generic relevant operator we find the assignment of RG boundary conditions to all flows. We use some analytic results but mostly rely on TCSA and TFFSA numerical techniques. We investigate real as wel…
We analyze the behavior of the ensemble of surface boundaries of the critical clusters at $T=T_c$ in the $3d$ Ising model. We find that $N_g(A)$, the number of surfaces of given genus $g$ and fixed area $A$, behaves as $A^{-x(g)}$ $e^{-μA}$. We show that $μ$ is a constant independent of $g$ and $x(g)$ is approximately a linear function of $g$. The sum of $N_g(A)$ over genus scales as a power of $A$. We also observe that the volume of the clusters is proportional to its surface area. We argue that this behavior is typical of a branching instability for the surfaces, similar to the ones found fo…
It is known that integrable models associated to rational $R$ matrices give rise to certain non-abelian symmetries known as Yangians. Analogously `boundary' symmetries arise when general but still integrable boundary conditions are implemented, as originally argued by Delius, Mackay and Short from the field theory point of view, in the context of the principal chiral model on the half line. In the present study we deal with a discrete quantum mechanical system with boundaries, that is the $N$ site $gl(n)$ open quantum spin chain. In particular, the open spin chain with two distinct types of bo…
We consider topologically twisted N=4 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory on a four-manifold of the form V = W \times R_+ or V = W \times I, where W is a Riemannian three-manifold. Different kinds of boundary conditions apply at infinity or at finite distance. We verify that each of these conditions defines a `middle-dimensional' subspace of the space of all bulk solutions. Taking the two boundaries of V into account should thus generically give a discrete set of solutions. We explicitly find the spherically symmetric solutions when W = S^3 endowed with the standard metric. For widely separated b…
We extend the twisted gauge theory model of topological orders in three spatial dimensions to the case where the three spaces have two dimensional boundaries. We achieve this by systematically constructing the boundary Hamiltonians that are compatible with the bulk Hamoltonian. Given the bulk Hamiltonian defined by a gauge group $G$ and a four-cocycle $ω$ in the fourth cohomology group of $G$ over $U(1)$, a boundary Hamiltonian can be defined by a subgroup $K$ of $G$ and a three-cochain $α$ in the third cochain group of $K$ over $U(1)$. The boundary Hamiltonian to be constructed must be gapped…
We extend the lightcone worldsheet lattice approach to string theory, proposed in 1977 by Giles and me, to allow for coincident D-branes. We find a convenient lattice representation of Dirichlet boundary conditions, which the open string coordinates transverse to the D-branes satisfy. We then represent the sum over all planar open string multi-loop diagrams by introducing an Ising spin system on the worldsheet lattice to keep track of the presence or absence of fluctuating boundaries. Finally we discuss a simple mean field treatment of the resulting coupled Ising/coordinate worldsheet system. …
Various structural properties of the space of symmetry breaking boundary conditions that preserve an orbifold subalgebra are established. To each such boundary condition we associate its automorphism type. It is shown that correlation functions in the presence of such boundary conditions are expressible in terms of twisted boundary blocks which obey twisted Ward identities. The subset of boundary conditions that share the same automorphism type is controlled by a classifying algebra, whose structure constants are shown to be traces on spaces of chiral blocks. T-duality on boundary conditions i…
As shown by Hořava and Witten, there are gravitational anomalies at the boundaries of $M^{10}\times S^1/Z_2$ of 11 dimensional supergravity. They showed that only 10 dimensional vector multiplets belonging to $E_8$ gauge group can be consistently coupled to this theory. Thus, the dimensional reduction of this theory should be the low energy limit of the $E_8\times E_8$ heterotic string. Here we assume that M-theory is a theory of supermembranes which includes twisted supermembranes. We show that for a target space $M^{10}\times S^1/Z_2$, in the limit in which $S^1/Z_2$ is small, the effective …
We examine the geometrical and topological properties of surfaces surrounding clusters in the 3--$d$ Ising model. For geometrical clusters at the percolation temperature and Fortuin--Kasteleyn clusters at $T_c$, the number of surfaces of genus $g$ and area $A$ behaves as $A^{x(g)}e^{-μ(g)A}$, with $x$ approximately linear in $g$ and $μ$ constant. We observe that cross--sections of spin domain boundaries at $T_c$ decompose into a distribution $N(l)$ of loops of length $l$ that scales as $l^{-τ}$ with $τ\sim 2.2$. We address the prospects for a string--theoretic description of cluster boundaries…
We consider the entanglement entropy in critical one-dimensional quantum systems with open boundary conditions. We show that the second Rényi entropy of an interval away from the boundary can be computed exactly, provided the same conformal boundary condition is applied on both sides. The result involves the annulus partition function. We compare our exact result with numerical computations for the critical quantum Ising chain with open boundary conditions. We find excellent agreement, and we analyse in detail the finite-size corrections, which are known to be much larger than for a periodic s…
Inspired by recent results on the effect of integrable boundary conditions on the bulk behavior of an integrable system, and in particular on the behavior of an existing defect we systematically formulate the Lax pairs in the simultaneous presence of integrable boundaries and defects. The respective sewing conditions as well as the relevant equations of motion on the defect point are accordingly extracted. We consider a specific prototype i.e. the vector non-linear Schrödinger (NLS) model to exemplify our construction. This model displays a highly non-trivial behavior and allows the existence …
Recently, multiple fractional instanton configurations with zero instanton charge, called bions, have been revealed to play important roles in quantum field theories on compactified spacetime. In two dimensions, fractional instantons and bions have been extensively studied in the ${\mathbb C}P^{N-1}$ model and the Grassmann sigma model on ${\mathbb R}^1 \times S^1$ with the ${\mathbb Z}_N$ symmetric twisted boundary condition. Fractional instantons in these models are domain walls with a localized $U(1)$ modulus twisted half along their world volume. In this paper, we classify fractional insta…
These scaling laws are the same as those we obtain for simulations of 3--$d$ bond percolation. We observe that cross--sections of spin domain boundaries at $T_c$ decompose into a distribution $N(l)$ of loops of length $l$ that scales as $l^{-τ}$ with …
Open descendants with boundaries and crosscaps of non-trivial automorphism type are studied. We focus on the case where the bulk symmetry is broken to a Z_2 orbifold subalgebra. By requiring positivity and integrality for the open sector, we derive a unique crosscap of automorphism type g \in Z_2 and a corresponding g-twisted Klein bottle for a charge conjugation invariant. As a specific example, we use T-duality to construct the descendants of the true diagonal invariant with symmetry preserving crosscaps and boundaries.
We extend the well-known method of calculating bulk correlation functions of the conformal Ising model via bosonisation to situations with boundaries. Oshikawa and Affleck have found the boundary states of two decoupled Ising models in terms of the orbifold of a single free boson compactified on a circle of radius r=1; we adapt their results to include disorder operators. Using these boundary states we calculate the expectation value of a single disorder field on a cylinder with free boundary conditions and show that in the appropriate limits we recover the standard and frustrated partition fu…
We relate two classical dualities in low-dimensional quantum field theory: Kramers-Wannier duality of the Ising and related lattice models in $2$ dimensions, with electromagnetic duality for finite gauge theories in $3$ dimensions. The relation is mediated by the notion of boundary field theory: Ising models are boundary theories for pure gauge theory in one dimension higher. Thus the Ising order/disorder operators are endpoints of Wilson/'t Hooft defects of gauge theory. Symmetry breaking on low-energy states reflects the multiplicity of topological boundary states. In the process we describe…
We compute the exact partition function, the universal ground state degeneracy and boundary state of the 2-D Ising model with boundary magnetic field at off-critical temperatures. The model has a domain that exhibits states localized near the boundaries. We study this domain of boundary bound state and derive exact expressions for the ``$g$ function'' and boundary state for all temperatures and boundary magnetic fields. In the massless limit we recover the boundary renormalization group flow between the conformally invariant free and fixed boundary conditions.
It is shown that the partition function of the 2d Ising model on the dual finite lattice with periodical boundary conditions is expressed through some specific combination of the partition functions of the model on the torus with corresponding boundary conditions. The generalization of the duality relations for the nonhomogeneous case is given. These relations are proved for the weakly-nonhomogeneous distribution of the coupling constants for the finite lattice of arbitrary sizes. Using the duality relations for the nonhomogeneous Ising model, we obtain the duality relations for the two-point …
We construct integrable realizations of conformal twisted boundary conditions for ^sl(2) unitary minimal models on a torus. These conformal field theories are realized as the continuum scaling limit of critical A-D-E lattice models with positive spectral parameter. The integrable seam boundary conditions are labelled by (r,s,ζ) in (A_{g-2},A_{g-1},Γ) where Γis the group of automorphisms of G and g is the Coxeter number of G. Taking symmetries into account, these are identified with conformal twisted boundary conditions of Petkova and Zuber labelled by (a,b,γ) in (A_{g-2}xG, A_{g-2}xG,Z_2) and …
The 2D off-critical q-state Potts model with boundaries was studied as a factorizable relativistic scattering theory. The scattering S-matrices for particles reflecting off the boundaries were obtained for the cases of ``fixed'' and ``free'' boundary conditions. In the Ising limit, the computed results agreed with recent work[5].
We consider a model of discretized 2d gravity interacting with Ising spins where phase boundaries are restricted to have minimal length and show analytically that the critical exponent $γ= 1/3$ at the spin transition point. The model captures the numerically observed behavior of standard multiple Ising spins coupled to 2d gravity.
We extend the holographic duality between 3d pure gravity and the 2d Ising CFT proposed in [Phys. Rev. D 85 (2012) 024032] to CFTs with boundaries. Besides the usual asymptotic boundary, the dual bulk spacetime now has a real cutoff, on which live branes with finite tension, giving Neumann boundary condition on the metric tensor. The strongly coupled bulk theory requires that we dress the well-known semiclassical AdS/BCFT answer with boundary gravitons, turning the partition function into the form of Virasoro characters. Using this duality, we relate the brane tensions to the modular S-matrix …
By considering the continuum scaling limit of the $A_{4}$ RSOS lattice model of Andrews-Baxter-Forrester with integrable boundaries, we derive excited state TBA equations describing the boundary flows of the tricritical Ising model. Fixing the bulk weights to their critical values, the integrable boundary weights admit a parameter $ξ$ which plays the role of the perturbing boundary field $ϕ_{1,3}$ and induces the renormalization group flow between boundary fixed points. The boundary TBA equations determining the RG flows are derived in the $\mathcal{B}_{(1,2)}\to \mathcal{B}_{(2,1)}$ example. …
We study disk amplitudes whose boundary conditions on matter configurations are not restricted to homogeneous ones. They are examined in the two-matrix model as well as in the three-matrix model for the case of the tricritical Ising model. Comparing these amplitudes, we demonstrate relations between degrees of freedom of matter states in the two models. We also show that they have a simple geometrical interpretation in terms of interactions of the boundaries. It plays an important role that two parts of a boundary with different matter states stick each other. We also find two closed sets of S…
We compute the entanglement entropy in a 2+1 dimensional topological order in the presence of gapped boundaries. Specifically, we consider entanglement cuts that cut through the boundaries. We argue that based on general considerations of the bulk-boundary correspondence, the "twisted characters" feature in the Renyi entropy, and the topological entanglement entropy is controlled by a "half-linking number" in direct analogy to the role played by the S-modular matrix in the absence of boundaries. We also construct a class of boundary states based on the half-linking numbers that provides a "clo…
We investigate the idea that the effect of the truncation applied in the TCSA method on the spectrum coincides with the effect of a suitable changing of the coefficients of the terms in the Hamiltonian operator. The investigation is done in the case of the critical Ising model on a strip with an external magnetic field on one of the boundaries. A detailed quantum field theoretical description of this model is also given, and we propose a description as a perturbation of the infinite coupling limit. The investigation is also carried out for a truncation method which preserves the solvability of…

Entanglement entropy (EE) in critical quantum spin chains described by 1+1D conformal field theories contains signatures of the universal characteristics of the field theory. Boundaries and defects in the spin chain give rise to universal contributions in the EE. In this work, we analyze these universal contributions for the critical Ising and XXZ spin chains for different conformal boundary conditions and defects. For the spin chains with boundaries, we use the boundary states for the corresponding continuum theories to compute the subleading contribution to the EE analytically and provide su…
We numerically obtain the conformal spectrum of several classical spin models on a two-dimensional lattice with open boundaries, for every boundary fixed point obtained by the Cardy's derivation [J. L. Cardy, Nucl. Phys. B 324, 581 (1989)]. In order to extract accurate conformal data, we implement the tensor network renormalization algorithm [G. Evenbly and G. Vidal, Phys. Rev. Lett. 115, 180405 (2015)] extended so as to be applicable to a square lattice with open boundaries. We successfully compute the boundary conformal spectrum consistent with the underlying boundary conformal field theorie…
