We conjecture a sharp bound on the rate of growth of chaos in thermal quantum systems with a large number of degrees of freedom. Chaos can be diagnosed using an out-of-time-order correlation function closely related to the commutator of operators separated in time. We conjecture that the influence of chaos on this correlator can develop no faster than exponentially, with Lyapunov exponent $λ_L \le 2 πk_B T/\hbar$. We give a precise mathematical argument, based on plausible physical assumptions, establishing this conjecture.
We review our recent work [arXiv:2009.10759] where we studied the chaotic property of the two coupled Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev systems exhibiting a Hawking-Page like phase transition. By computing the out-of-time-ordered correlator in the large N limit by using the bilocal field formalism, we found that the chaos exponent of this model shows a discontinuous fall-off at the phase transition temperature. Hence in this model the Hawking-Page like transition is correlated with a transition in chaoticity, as expected from the relation between a black hole geometry and the chaotic behavior in the dual fiel…
We conjecture a chaos energy bound, an upper bound on the energy dependence of the Lyapunov exponent for any classical/quantum Hamiltonian mechanics and field theories. The conjecture states that the Lyapunov exponent $λ(E)$ grows no faster than linearly in the total energy $E$ in the high energy limit. In other words, the exponent $c$ in $λ(E) \propto E^c \,(E\to\infty)$ satisfies $c\leq 1$. This chaos energy bound stems from thermodynamic consistency of out-of-time-order correlators (OTOC's) and applies to any classical/quantum system with finite $N$ / large $N$ ($N$ is the number of degrees…
Chaos, in quantum systems, can be diagnosed by certain out-of-time-order correlators (OTOCs) that obey the chaos bound of Maldacena, Shenker, and Stanford (MSS). We begin by deriving a dispersion relation for this class of OTOCs, implying that they must satisfy many more constraints beyond the MSS bound. Motivated by this observation, we perform a systematic analysis obtaining an infinite set of constraints on the OTOC. This infinite set includes the MSS bound as the leading constraint. In addition, it also contains subleading bounds that are highly constraining, especially when the MSS bound …
We show that the known bound on the growth rate of the out-of-time-order four-point correlator in chaotic many-body quantum systems follows directly from the general structure of operator matrix elements in systems that obey the eigenstate thermalization hypothesis. This ties together two key paradigms of thermal behavior in isolated many-body quantum systems.
In maximally chaotic quantum systems, a class of out-of-time-order correlators (OTOCs) saturate the Maldacena-Shenker-Stanford (MSS) bound on chaos. Recently, it has been shown that the same OTOCs must also obey an infinite set of (subleading) constraints in any thermal quantum system with a large number of degrees of freedom. In this paper, we find a unique analytic extension of the maximally chaotic OTOC that saturates all the subleading chaos bounds which allow saturation. This extremally chaotic OTOC has the feature that information of the initial perturbation is recovered at very late tim…
The transfer operator (TO) formalism of the dynamical systems (DS) theory is reformulated here in terms of the recently proposed supersymetric theory of stochastic differential equations (SDE). It turns out that the stochastically generalized TO (GTO) of the DS theory is the finite-time Fokker-Planck evolution operator. As a result comes the supersymmetric trivialization of the so-called sharp trace and sharp determinant of the GTO, with the former being the Witten index, which is also the stochastic generalization of the Lefschetz index so that it equals the Euler characteristic of the (close…
We discuss the quantum bound on chaos in the context of the free propagation of a particle in an arbitrarily curved surface at low temperatures. The semiclassical calculation of the Lyapunov exponent can be performed in much the same way as the corresponding one for the `Loschmidt echo'.The bound appears here as the impossibility to scatter a wave, by effect of the curvature, over characteristic lengths smaller than the deBroglie wavelength.
Thermalization of chaotic quantum many-body systems under unitary time evolution is related to the growth in complexity of initially simple Heisenberg operators. Operator growth is a manifestation of information scrambling and can be diagnosed by out-of-time-order correlators (OTOCs). However, the behavior of OTOCs of local operators in generic chaotic local Hamiltonians remains poorly understood, with some semiclassical and large N models exhibiting exponential growth of OTOCs and a sharp chaos wavefront and other random circuit models showing a diffusively broadened wavefront. In this paper …

In this article, using the principles of Random Matrix Theory (RMT), we give a measure of quantum chaos by quantifying Spectral From Factor (SFF) appearing from the computation of two-point Out of Time Order Correlation function (OTOC) expressed in terms of square of the commutator bracket of quantum operators which are separated in time. We also provide a strict model independent bound on the measure of quantum chaos, $-1/N(1-1/π)\leq {\bf SFF}\leq 0$ and $0\leq {\bf SFF}\leq 1/πN$, valid for thermal systems with a large and small number of degrees of freedom respectively. Based on the approp…
We study a generalization of the chaos bound that applies to out-of-time-ordered correlators between four different operators. We prove this bound under the same assumptions that apply for the usual chaos bound and extend it to non-hermitian operators. In a holographic theory, these correlators are controlled by inelastic scattering in the bulk and we comment on implications. In particular, for holographic theories the bound together with the equivalence principle suggests that gravity is the highest spin force, and the strongest one with that spin.
We show that the so-called chaos bound, proposed by Maldacena, Shenker, and Stanford, can be violated in $f(T)$ teleparallel gravity. In particular, it is possible to select a new gravitational Lyapunov parameter, controlling chaotization of circular trajectories, in black hole photo-sphere, that can exceed the Maldacena, Shenker and Stanford thermal bound. This feature alters the standard quasi-normal modes and ringdown phase after black hole merging with intriguing implications for future gravitational wave detections and black hole shadow measurements. It is a general characteristic for sev…
We explore the quantum chaos of the coadjoint orbit action. We study quantum fluctuation around a saddle point to evaluate the soft mode contribution to the out-of-time-ordered correlator. We show that the stability condition of the semi-classical analysis of the coadjoint orbit found by Witten (1988) leads to the upper bound on the Lyapunov exponent which is identical to the bound on chaos proven in arXiv:1503.01409. The bound is saturated by the coadjoint orbit $\text{Diff}(S^1)/SL(2)$ while the other stable orbit $\text{Diff}(S^1)/U(1)$ where the $SL(2,\mathbb{R})$ is broken to $U(1)$ has n…
We study an inequality between a scaling exponent $A$ in the Regge limit of tree-level flat space S-matrices with external massless scalars and another scaling exponent $A'$ in the Regge limit of the corresponding four-point scalar conformal correlators by using scaling exponents of Mellin amplitudes. We derive $A'\ge A$, which leads to the Regge growth bound of tree-level flat space S-matrices from the chaos bound in the flat space limit of the AdS/CFT correspondence, from polynomial boundedness of the Mellin amplitudes for local bulk descriptions. We also show $A'=A$ from the conformal block…
We study the thermoelectric DC conductivities of Horndeski holographic models with momentum dissipation. We compute the butterfly velocity $v_B$ and we discuss the existence of universal bounds on charge and energy diffusivities in the incoherent limit related to quantum chaos. We find that the Horndeski coupling represents a subleading contribution to the thermoelectric conductivities in the incoherent limit and therefore it does not affect any of the proposed bounds.
It is challenging to quantify chaos of QCD, because non-perturbative QCD accompanies non-local observables. By using holography, we find that QCD strings at large $N_c$ and strong coupling limit exhibit chaos, and measure their Lyapunov exponent at zero temperature. A pair of a quark and an antiquark separated by $L_q$ in the large $N_c$ QCD is dual to a Nambu-Goto string hanging from the spatial boundary of the D4-soliton geometry. We numerically solve the motion of the string after putting a pulse force on its boundaries. The chaos is observed for the amplitude of the force larger than a cer…
In this paper, we have studied the variation of the chaos bound in two regions of the torus-like black hole, i.e., the region close to the black hole horizon and the region at a certain distance from the black hole horizon. The angular momentum of the particle affects the effective potential and influences the magnitude of the chaotic behavior of the particle. Therefore, the angular momentum of particle is important in the study. The angular momentum of a particle not only affects the particle equilibrium orbital position, but also affects the Lyapunov exponent. As the angular momentum of the …
By extending methods of arXiv:1503.01409, we investigate the bound on the growth of higher point OTOCs by studying their complex analytical properties. We explore some subtleties in our mathematical investigation, and carefully examine the physical interpretation of our result. We also touch upon the possibility of the saturation of the bound in a physical system. Finally, we consider few known examples of higher point OTOCs. For the simplest case of $2n$-point Tremolo correlators the bound on the exponent is proportional to $n$.
We study bound orbits of a free particle around a singly rotating black ring. We find there exists chaotic motion of a particle which is gravitationally bound to the black ring by using the Poincare map.

Thermal states of quantum systems with many degrees of freedom are subject to a bound on the rate of onset of chaos, including a bound on the Lyapunov exponent, $λ_L\leq 2π/β$. We harness this bound to constrain the space of putative holographic CFTs and their would-be dual theories of AdS gravity. First, by studying out-of-time-order four-point functions, we discuss how $λ_L=2π/β$ in ordinary two-dimensional holographic CFTs is related to properties of the OPE at strong coupling. We then rule out the existence of unitary, sparse two-dimensional CFTs with large central charge and a set of high…
We argue for an exponential bound characterizing the chaotic properties of modular Hamiltonian flow of QFT subsystems. In holographic theories, maximal modular chaos is reflected in the local Poincare symmetry about a Ryu-Takayanagi surface. Generators of null deformations of the bulk extremal surface map to modular scrambling modes -positive CFT operators saturating the bound- and their algebra probes the bulk Riemann curvature, clarifying the modular Berry curvature proposal of arXiv:1903.04493.
We study out-of-time-order correlators (OTOCs) of rotating BTZ black holes using two different approaches: the elastic eikonal gravity approximation, and the Chern-Simons formulations of 3-dimensional gravity. Within both methods the OTOC is given as a sum of two contributions, corresponding to left and right moving modes. The contributions have different Lyapunov exponents, $λ_L^{\pm}=\frac{2π}β\frac{1}{1\mp \ell Ω}$, where $Ω$ is the angular velocity and $\ell$ is the AdS radius. Since $λ_L^{-} \leq \frac{2π}β \leq λ_L^{+}$, there is an apparent contradiction with the chaos bound. We discuss…
We investigate the conjectured bound on the Lyapunov exponent for a charged particle with angular motion in the Kerr-Newman-AdS black hole. The Lyapunov exponent is calculated based on the effective Lagrangian. We show that the negative cosmological constant reduces the chaotic behavior of the particle, namely, it decreases the Lyapunov exponent. Hence, the bound is more effective in the AdS spacetime than in the flat spacetime. Nevertheless, we find that the bound can be violated when the angular momenta of the black hole are turned on. Moreover, we show that in an extremal black hole, the bo…
The chaos bound in the near-horizon regions has been studied through the expansions of the metric functions on the horizon. In this paper, we investigate the chaos bound in the the near-horizon region and at a certain distance from the horizon of a charged Kiselev black hole. The value of the Lyapunov exponent is accurately calculated by a Jacobian matrix. The angular momentum of a charged particle around the black hole affects not only the exponent, but also the position of the equilibrium orbit. This position gradually moves away from the horizon with the increase of the angular momentum. We…
We show that several features of the Jackiw-Teitelboim model are in fact universal properties of two-dimensional Maxwell-dilaton gravity theories with a broad class of asymptotics. These theories satisfy a flow equation with the structure of a dimensionally reduced TTbar deformation, and exhibit chaotic behavior signaled by a maximal Lyapunov exponent. One consequence of our results is a no-go theorem for smooth flows from an asymptotically AdS2 region to a de Sitter fixed point.
We study four-point functions of scalars, conserved currents, and stress tensors in a conformal field theory, generated by a local contact term in the bulk dual description, in two different causal configurations. The first of these is the standard Regge configuration in which the chaos bound applies. The second is the `causally scattering configuration' in which the correlator develops a bulk point singularity. We find an expression for the coefficient of the bulk point singularity in terms of the bulk S matrix of the bulk dual metric, gauge fields and scalars, and use it to determine the Reg…
