The running of the non-minimal parameter (ξ) of the interaction of the real scalar field and scalar curvature is explored within the non-perturbative setting of the functional renormalization group (RG). We establish the RG flow in curved space-time in the scalar field sector, in particular derive an equation for the non-minimal parameter. The RG trajectory is numerically explored for different sets of initial data.
Renormalization group equations for massless GUT's in curved space-time with non-trivial topology are formulated. The asymptotics of the effective action both at high and low energies are obtained. It is shown that the Casimir energy contribution at high curvature (early Universe) becomes non-essential in the effective action.
Based only on simple principles of renormalization in coordinate space, we derive closed renormalized amplitudes and renormalization group constants at 1- and 2-loop orders for scalar field theories in general backgrounds. This is achieved through a generic renormalization procedure we develop exploiting the central idea behind differential renormalization, which needs as only inputs the propagator and the appropriate laplacian for the backgrounds in question. We work out this generic coordinate space renormalization in some detail, and subsequently back it up with specific calculations for sc…
We consider the renormalization of general gauge theories on curved space-time background, with the main assumption being the existence of a gauge-invariant and diffeomorphism invariant regularization. Using the Batalin-Vilkovisky (BV) formalism one can show that the theory possesses gauge invariant and diffeomorphism invariant renormalizability at quantum level, up to an arbitrary order of the loop expansion. Starting from this point we discuss the locality of the counterterms and the general prescription for constructing the power-counting renormalizable theories on curved background.
The renormalization-group improved effective potential ---to leading-log and in the linear curvature approximation--- is constructed for ``finite'' theories in curved spacetime. It is not trivial and displays a quite interesting, exponential-like structure ---in contrast with the case of flat spacetime where it coincides with the classical potential. Several possible cosmological applications, as curvature-induced phase transitions and modifications of the values of the gravitational and cosmological constants, are briefly discussed.
The renormalization group method is employed to study the effective potential in curved spacetime with torsion. The renormalization-group improved effective potential corresponding to a massless gauge theory in such a spacetime is found and in this way a generalization of Coleman-Weinberg's approach corresponding to flat space is obtained. A method which works with the renormalization group equation for two-loop effective potential calculations in torsionful spacetime is developed. The effective potential for the conformal factor in the conformal dynamics of quantum gravity with torsion is the…
The renormalization group (RG) is used in order to obtain the RG improved effective potential in curved spacetime. This potential is explicitly calculated for the Yukawa model and for scalar electrodynamics, i.e. theories with several (namely, more than one) mass scales, in a space of constant curvature. Using the $λφ^4$-theory on a general curved spacetime as an example, we show how it is possible to find the RG improved effective Lagrangian in curved spacetime. As specific applications, we discuss the possibility of curvature induced phase transitions in the Yukawa model and the effective eq…
In this technical note we introduce a manifestly gauge-invariant and supersymmetric procedure to regularize and renormalize one-loop divergences of chiral multiplets in two-dimensional N=(2,2) theories in curved spacetime. We apply the method, a version of Pauli-Villars regularization, to known examples of supersymmetric localization and demonstrate that the partition functions are renormalized. An accompanying ancillary file, a Mathematica notebook, implements the relevant supergravity transformations.
The renormalization-group improved effective potential for an arbitrary renormalizable massless gauge theory in curved spacetime is found, thus generalizing Coleman-Weinberg's approach corresponding to flat space. Some explicit examples are considered, among of them:scalar self-interacting theory, scalar electrody namics, the asymptotically-free SU(2) gauge model, and the SU(5) GUT theory. The possibility of curvature-induced phase transitions is analyzed. It is shown that such a phase transition may take place in a SU(5) inflationary universe. The inclusion of quantum gravity effects isbriefly discus…
A method for finding the renormalization group (RG) improved effective Lagrangian for a massive interacting field theory in curved spacetime is presented. As a particular example, the $λφ^4$-theory is considered and the RG improved effective Lagrangian is explicitly found up to second order in the curvature tensors. As a further application, the curvature-induced phase transitions are discussed for both the massive and the massless versions of the theory. The problems which appear when calculating the RG improved effective Lagrangian for gauge theories are discussed, taking as example the asym…
We review our recent results on the renormalization procedure for a free quantum scalar field with modified dispersion relations in curved spacetimes. For dispersion relations containing up to $2s$ powers of the spatial momentum, the subtraction necessary to renormalize $<ϕ^2>$ and $<T_{μν}>$ depends on $s$. We first describe our previous analysis for spatially flat Friedman-Robertson-Walker and Bianchi type I metrics. Then we present a new power counting analysis for general background metrics in the weak field approximation.
We consider the one-loop renormalization of QED in curved space-time with additional Lorentz and/or CPT breaking terms. The renormalization group equations in the vacuum sector are derived. In the special case of Minkowski metric and with constant Lorentz and CPT breaking terms these equations reduce to the ones obtained earlier by other authors. The necessary form of the vacuum counterterms indicate possible violations of the space or time homogeneity or space isotropy in the gravitational phenomena. However, the necessity of the phenomenologically most interesting terms such as linear in the…
Using covariant methods, we construct and explore the Wetterich equation for a non-minimal coupling $F(ϕ)R$ of a quantized scalar field to the Ricci scalar of a prescribed curved space. This includes the often considered non-minimal coupling $ξϕ^2 R$ as a special case. We consider the truncations without and with scale- and field-dependent wave function renormalization in dimensions between four and two. Thereby the main emphasis is on analytic and numerical solutions of the fixed point equations and the behavior in the vicinity of the corresponding fixed points. We determine the non-minimal c…
The renormalization group (RG) is used to study the asymptotically free $ϕ_6^3$-theory in curved spacetime. Several forms of the RG equations for the effective potential are formulated. By solving these equations we obtain the one-loop effective potential as well as its explicit forms in the case of strong gravitational fields and strong scalar fields. Using zeta function techniques, the one-loop and corresponding RG improved vacuum energies are found for the Kaluza-Klein backgrounds $R^4\times S^1\times S^1$ and $R^4\times S^2$. They are given in terms of exponentially convergent series, appr…
A higher-derivative, interacting, scalar field theory in curved spacetime with the most general action of sigma-model type is studied. The one-loop counterterms of the general theory are found. The renormalization group equations corresponding to two different, multiplicatively renormalizable variants of the same are derived. The analysis of their asymptotic solutions shows that, depending on the sign of one of the coupling constants, we can construct an asymptotically free theory which is also asymptotically conformal invariant at strong (or small) curvature. The connection that can be establ…
We consider an interacting Lifshitz field with z=3 in a curved spacetime. We analyze the renormalizability of the theory for interactions of the form lambda phi^n, with arbitrary even n. We compute the running of the coupling constants both in the ultraviolet and infrared regimes. We show that the Lorentz violating terms generate couplings to the spacetime metric that are not invariant under general coordinate transformations. These couplings are not suppressed by the scale of Lorentz violation and therefore survive at low energies. We point out that in these theories, unless the effective mas…
We propose to slightly generalize the DeWitt-Schwinger adiabatic renormalization subtractions in curved space to include an arbitrary renormalization mass scale $μ$. The new predicted running for the gravitational couplings are fully consistent with decoupling of heavy massive fields. This is a somewhat improvement with respect to the more standard treatment of minimal (DeWitt-Schwinger) subtractions via dimensional regularization. We also show how the vacuum metamorphosis model emerges from the running couplings.
We examine the role of curved geometry on renormalization group by means of image compression based on the singular value decomposition. By calculating course-grained images and their entanglement entropy, we find the anti-de Sitter space / conformal field theory correspondence hidden in the compression. The correspondence is originated from the conservation law for information. We discuss how one particular metric is automatically induced from various images. A formula for resolution of the course-grained images is also derived.
We consider the leading order perturbative renormalization of the multicritical $ϕ^{2n}$ models and some generalizations in curved space. We pay particular attention to the nonminimal interaction with the scalar curvature $\frac{1}{2}ξϕ^2 R$ and discuss the emergence of the conformal value of the coupling $ξ$ as the renormalization group fixed point of its beta function at and below the upper critical dimension as a function of $n$. We also examine our results in relation with Kawai and Ninomiya's formulation of two dimensional gravity.
We study the non-minimal pure spinor string in a curved background. We find that the minimal BRST invariance implies the existence of a non-trivial stress-energy tensor for the minimal and non-minimal variables in the heterotic curved background. We find constraint equations for the b ghost. We construct the b ghost as a solution of these constraints.
We study the coupling of the non-minimal ghost fields of the pure spinor superstring in general curved backgrounds. The coupling is found solving the consistent relations from the nilpotency of the non-minimal BRST charge.
We point out that the duality symmetry of free electromagnetism does not hold in the quantum theory if an arbitrary classical gravitational background is present. The symmetry breaks in the process of renormalization, as also happens with conformal invariance. We show that a similar duality-anomaly appears for a massless scalar field in $1+1$ dimensions.
We calculate the one-loop divergences for different vector field models in curved spacetime. We introduce a classification scheme based on their degeneracy structure, which encompasses the well-known models of the non-degenerate vector field, the Abelian gauge field and the Proca field. The renormalization of the generalized Proca model, which has important applications in cosmology, is more complicated. By extending standard heat-kernel techniques, we derive a closed form expression for the one-loop divergences of the generalized Proca model.
I consider certain renormalization effects in curved spacetime quantum field theory. In the very early universe these effects resemble those of a cosmological constant, while in the present universe they give rise to a significant finite renormalization of the gravitational constant. The relevant renormalization term and its relation to elementary particle masses was first found by Parker and Toms in 1985, as a consequence of the ``new partially summed form'' of the propagator in curved spacetime. The significance of the term is based on the contribution of massive particles to the vacuum. In …
Using the method of covariant symbols we compute the divergent part of the effective action of the Proca field with non-minimal mass term. Specifically a quantum Abelian vector field with a non-derivative coupling to an external tensor field in curved spacetime in four dimensions is considered. Relatively explicit expressions are obtained which are manifestly local but non polynomial in the external fields. Our result is shown to reproduce existing ones in all particular cases considered. Internal consistency with Weyl invariance is also verified.
We explore the classical and quantum properties of a sterile scalar field coupled to $N$ copies of Dirac fermions in an external gravitational field. We find that the self-interaction scalar potential of a model that is consistent at the quantum level, includes odd (first and third) powers of a scalar. In particular, one has to consider, besides the standard non-minimal coupling of the form $ξφ^2 R$, the new type of non-minimal coupling of the form $fφR$ with new non-minimal parameter $f$. We study the one-loop renormalization of such a theory including renormalization of the new non-minimal c…
We consider the renormalization of the one-loop effective action for the Yukawa interaction. We compute the beta functions in the generalized DeWitt-Schwinger subtraction scheme. For the quantized scalar field we obtain that all the beta functions exhibit decoupling for heavy fields as stated by the Appelquist-Carazzone theorem including also the gravitational couplings. For the quantized Dirac field, decoupling appears for almost all of them. We obtain the atypical result that the mass parameter of the background scalar field does not decouple.
The decoupling of heavy fields as required by the Appelquist-Carazzone theorem plays a fundamental role in the construction of any effective field theory. However, it is not a trivial task to implement a renormalization prescription that produces the expected decoupling of massive fields, and it is even more difficult in curved spacetime. Focused on this idea, we consider the renormalization of the one-loop effective action for the Yukawa interaction with a background scalar field in curved space. We compute the beta functions within a generalized DeWitt-Schwinger subtraction procedure and dis…
The pure spinor superstring in a type II curved background is considered. In order to define reparametrization ghosts, non-minimal pure spinor variables have to be present in the formalism. The BRST transformations of the non-minimal variables are obtained. It is found that the BRST transformations of a set of world-sheet variables have the form of the corresponding transformations in flat spacetime, up to a field-dependent Lorentz rotation. This simplify the construction of the reparametrization $b$ ghosts.
A method to regularize and renormalize the fluctuations of a quantum field in a curved background in the $ζ$-function approach is presented. The method produces finite quantities directly and finite scale-parametrized counterterms at most. These finite couterterms are related to the presence of a particular pole of the effective-action $ζ$ function as well as to the heat kernel coefficients. The method is checked in several examples obtaining known or reasonable results. Finally, comments are given for as it concerns the recent proposal by Frolov et al. to get the finite Bekenstein-Hawking ent…

This paper proposes a different interpretation on the renormalization program of an interacting Klein-Gordon field in curved space-times. Rather than being just another renormalization program we argue that it that it makes the QFT ultraviolet-finite at its foundation. More precisely, we argue that renormalization is a part of the foundation of QFT and that without it the theory is mathematically ill-defined or at the very least incompletely specified.
The one-loop divergences for the scalar field theory with Lorentz and/or CPT breaking terms are obtained in curved space-time. We analyze two separate cases: minimal coupled scalar field with gravity and nonminimal one. For the minimal case with real scalar field, the counterterms are evaluated in a nonperturbative form in the CPT-even parameter through a redefinition of space-time metric. In the most complicated case of complex scalar field nonminimally interacting with gravity, the solution for the divergences is obtained in the first order in the weak Lorentz violating parameter. The necess…
It is well known that the renormalization group equations depend on the scale where they are applied. This phenomenon is especially relevant for the massive fields in curved space, because the decoupling effects may be responsible for important cosmological applications like the graceful exit from the inflation and low-energy quantum dynamics of the cosmological constant. We investigate, using both covariant and non-covariant methods of calculations and mass-dependent renormalization scheme, the vacuum quantum effects of a massive scalar field in curved space-time. In the higher derivative sec…
We continue the study of the renormalization group and decoupling of massive fields in curved space, started in the previous article and analyse the higher derivative sector of the vacuum metric-dependent action of the Standard Model. The QCD sector at low-energies is described in terms of the composite effective fields. For fermions and scalars the massless limit shows perfect correspondence with the conformal anomaly, but similar limit in a massive vector case requires an extra compensating scalar. In all three cases the decoupling goes smoothly and monotonic. A particularly interesting case…
The effective action for the interacting massive scalar field in curved space-time is derived using the heat-kernel method. Starting from this effective action, we establish a smooth quadratic form of the low-energy decoupling for the four-scalar coupling constant and for the nonminimal interaction parameter. The evolution of this parameter from the conformal value 1/6 at high energies down to the IR regime is investigated within the two toy models with negative and positive four-scalar coupling constants.
We continue investigation of the renormalization group and decoupling of the quantized massive fields in curved space. In the present work we analyze a theory, where fields gain their masses due to the Spontaneous Symmetry Breaking (SSB), that is the case providing a remarkable exception from the Appelquist-Carazzone theorem in the matter fields sector. In the vacuum sector, already at the classical level, the theory with SSB includes, in the general case an infinite number of the non-local terms in the induced vacuum action. Despite this surprising property, we show that the theory is renorma…
We review past and present results on the non-local form-factors of the effective action of semiclassical gravity in two and four dimensions computed by means of a covariant expansion of the heat kernel up to the second order in the curvatures. We discuss the importance of these form-factors in the construction of mass-dependent beta functions for the Newton's constant and the other gravitational couplings.
Free massive higher spin fields in weak background gravitational fields are discussed. Contrary to the spin one case, higher spin fields should have nontrivial non-minimal couplings to the curvature. A precise analysis is given for the spin 2 case, and it is shown that two conditions should be satisfied among five non-minimal coupling constants, which we derive both in the Hamiltonian and Lagrangian formalisms. It is checked that the linearized limit of the massive gravity theory indeed has the non-minimal couplings that satisfy the conditions. We also discuss the form of the non-minimal coupl…
We consider the one-loop renormalization of a real scalar field interacting with a Dirac spinor field in curved spacetime. A general Yukawa interaction is considered which includes both a scalar and a pseudoscalar coupling. The scalar field is assumed to be non-minimally coupled to the gravitational field and to have a general quartic self-interaction potential. All of the one-loop renormalization group functions are evaluated and in the special case where there is no mass scale present in the classical theory (apart from the fields) we evaluate the one-loop effective action up to and includin…
This is a copy of the 2009 Princeton University thesis which examined various aspects of gauge/gravity duality, including renormalization group flows, phase transitions of the holographic entanglement entropy, and instabilities associated with the breaking of supersymmetry. Chapter 5 contains new unpublished material on various instabilities of the weakly curved non-supersymmetric $AdS_4$ backgrounds of M-theory.
We present a simple method for deriving the renormalization counterterms from the components of the energy-momentum tensor in curved space-time. This method allows full control over the finite parts of the counterterms and provides explicit expressions for each term separately. As an example, the method is used for the self-interacting scalar field in a Friedmann-Robertson-Walker metric in the adiabatic approximation, where we calculate the renormalized equation of motion for the field and the renormalized components of the energy-momentum tensor to fourth adiabatic order while including inter…
The well-known formula $det(A\cdot B)=\det A \cdot \det B$ can be easily proved for finite dimensional matrices but it may be incorrect for the functional determinants of differential operators, including the ones which are relevant for Quantum Field Theory applications. Considerable work has been done to prove that this equality can be violated, but in all previously known cases the difference could be reduced to renormalization ambiguity. We present the first example, where the difference between the two functional determinants is a nonlocal expression and therefore can not be explained by t…
The quantum effective action of non-minimal vector fields with Abelian or non-Abelian gauge degrees of freedom in curved spacetime is studied. The Proca or Yang-Mills fields are coupled to a local mass-like term acting in both coordinate and gauge spaces. Pathologies due to gauge invariance in the ultraviolet are avoided through the introduction of a non-Abelian version of the Stueckelberg field. It is found that the breaking of gauge invariance induced by the mass term affects only the tree level part of the effective action. The ultraviolet divergent part of the effective action to one loop …
The running coupling constants are introduced in Quantum Mechanics and their evolution is described by the help of the renormalization group equation. The harmonic oscillator and the propagation on curved spaces are presented as examples. The hamiltonian and the lagrangian scaling relations are obtained. These evolution equations are used to construct low energy effective models.
We study the Yukawa model with one scalar and one axial scalar fields, coupled to $N$ copies of Dirac fermions, in curved spacetime background. The theory possesses a reach set of coupling constants, including the scalar terms with odd powers of scalar fields in the potential, and constants of non-minimal coupling of the scalar fields to gravity. Using the heat-kernel technique and dimensional regularization, we derive the one-loop divergences, describe the renormalization of the theory under consideration and calculate the full set of beta- and gamma-functions for all coupling constants and f…
We define the renormalization group flow for a renormalizable interacting quantum field in curved spacetime via its behavior under scaling of the spacetime metric, $\g \to λ^2 \g$. We consider explicitly the case of a scalar field, $ϕ$, with a self-interaction of the form $κϕ^4$, although our results should generalize straightforwardly to other renormalizable theories. We construct the interacting field--as well as its Wick powers and their time-ordered-products--as formal power series in the algebra generated by the Wick powers and time-ordered-products of the free field, and we determine the…
We apply the functional renormalization group equation to a massive Fierz-Pauli action in curved space and find that, even though a massive term is a modification in the infrared sector, the mass term modifies the value of the non-gaussian fixed point in the UV sector. We obtained the beta function for the scale dependent mass parameter and found that the massive Fierz-Pauli case still seems to be an asymptotically safe theory.
We present the full two-loop $β$-functions for the minimal supersymmetric standard model couplings, extended to include R-parity violating couplings through explicit R-parity violation.
Using the renormalization group (RG) approach and the equivalency between the class of gauge-Higgs-Yukawa models and the gauged Nambu-Jona-Lasinio (NJL) model, we study the gauged NJL model in curved space-time. The behaviour of the scalar-gravitational coupling constant $ξ(t)$ in both theories is discussed. The RG improved effective potential of gauged NJL model in curved spacetime is found. The curvature at which chiral symmetry in the gauged NJL model is broken is obtained explicitly in a remarkably simple form. The powerful RG improved effective potential formalizm leads to the same result…
We consider a quantum scalar field with λϕ^4 interaction in curved spacetimes. The quantum effects are taken into account nonperturbatively using the Hartree approximation to the 2PI effective action. Although this approximation has been considered in many previous works, we reconsider it using a consistent nonperturbative renormalization procedure, which we extend to general curved spacetimes. We obtain the renormalized equations for the mean field and for the propagator of the fluctuations, showing explicitly their independence on the arbitrary scale introduced by the regularization scheme. …
This paper analyzes the effect of curved closed string backgrounds on the stability of D-branes within boundary string field theory. We identify the non-local open string background that implements shifts in the closed string background and analyze the tachyonic sector off-shell. The renormalization group flow reveals some characteristic properties, which are expected for a curved background, like the absence of a stable space-filling brane. In 3-dimensions we describe tachyon condensation processes to lower-dimensional branes, including a curved 2-dimensional brane. We argue that this 2-brane…
We study the effective action for the massive vector field theory non-minimally coupled to external gravitational field. Such a theory is an interesting model both from the theoretical side and also due to the various phenomenological applications to cosmology and astrophysics. The present work pretends to initiate a systematic study of its properties at the quantum level, by exploring free massive vector coupled to an external symmetric second-rank tensor. Stueckelberg scalar field is used to restore the gauge invariance. After that, by using a special gauge fixing and non-local in external f…
A previously introduced method to renormalize the one-loop stress tensor and the one-loop vacuum fluctuations in a curved background by a direct local $ζ$-function approach is checked in some thermal and nonthermal cases. First the method is checked in the case of a conformally coupled massless field in the static Einstein universe where all hypotheses initially requested by the method hold true. Secondly, dropping the hypothesis of a closed manifold, the method is checked in the open static Einstein universe. Finally, the method is checked for a massless scalar field in the presence of a coni…
A method which uses a generalized tensorial $ζ$-function to compute the renormalized stress tensor of a quantum field propagating in a (static) curved background is presented. The starting point of the method is the direct computation of the functional derivatives of the Euclidean one-loop effective action with respect to the background metric. This method, when available, gives rise to a conserved stress tensor and produces the conformal anomaly formula directly. It is proven that the obtained stress tensor agrees with statistical mechanics in the case of a finite temperature theory. The reno…
We investigate gravitational correlation functions in a curved background with the help of nonperturbative renormalization group methods. Beta functions for eleven couplings are derived, two of which correspond to running gauge parameters. A unique ultraviolet fixed point is found, suitable for a UV completion in the sense of Asymptotic Safety. To arrive at a well-behaved flow in a curved background, the regularization must be chosen carefully. We provide two admissible choices to solve this issue in the present approximation. We further demonstrate by an explicit calculation that the Landau l…
The quantum entanglement entropy of an eternal black hole is studied. We argue that the relevant Euclidean path integral is taken over fields defined on $α$-fold covering of the black hole instanton. The statement that divergences of the entropy are renormalized by renormalization of gravitational couplings in the effective action is proved for non-minimally coupled scalar matter. The relationship of entanglement and thermodynamical entropies is discussed.
We calculate contributions to the one-loop renormalization in the spinor sector of the minimal Lorentz-violating extended QED in the second order in Lorentz-breaking parameters. From the renormalizability viewpoint, we show that the inclusion of some of the Lorentz-breaking terms in the model is linked to the presence of others. We also demonstrate that the Ward identities are satisfied up to this order.
We investigate Weyl anomalies on a curved world sheet to second order in a weak field expansion. Using a local version of the exact renormalization group equations, we obtain nonperturbative results for the tachyon/graviton/dilaton system. We discuss the elimination of redundant operators, which play a crucial role for the emergence of target space covariance. Performing the operator product expansion on a curved world sheet allows us to obtain the nonperturbative contributions to the dilaton $β$ function. We find the $β$ functions, after suitable field redefinitions, to be related to a target…
