The intermetallic compound ZnSb is an interesting thermoelectric material, largely due to its low lattice thermal conductivity. The origin of the low thermal conductivity has so far been speculative. Using multi-temperature single crystal X-ray diffraction (9 - 400 K) and powder X-ray diffraction (300 - 725 K) measurements we characterized the volume expansion and the evolution of structural properties with temperature and identify an increasingly anharmonic behavior of the Zn atoms. From a combination of Raman spectroscopy and first principles calculations of phonons we consolidate the presence of low-energy optic modes with wavenumbers below 60 cm-1. Heat capacity measurements between 2 and 400 K can be well described by a Debye-Einstein model containing one Debye and two Einstein contributions with temperatures ΘD = 195K, ΘE1 = 78 K and ΘE2 = 277 K as well as a significant contribution due to anharmonicity above 150 K. The presence of a multitude of weakly dispersed low-energy optical modes (which couple with the acoustic, heat carrying phonons) combined with anharmonic thermal behavior provides an effective mechanism for low lattice thermal conductivity. The peculiar vibrational properties of ZnSb are attributed to its chemical bonding properties which are characterized by multicenter bonded structural entities. We argue that the proposed mechanism to explain the low lattice thermal conductivity of ZnSb might also control the thermoelectric properties of electron poor semiconductors, such as Zn4Sb3, CdSb, Cd4Sb3, Cd13-xInyZn10, and Zn5Sb4In2-x.
The power factor of pure p-type ZnSb has been calculated via ab initio simulations assuming that the carrier concentrations are due to the doping effect of intrinsic zinc vacancies. With a vacancy concentration close to the experimental solubility limit we were able to perfectly reproduce the Power Factor measured in polycrystalline ZnSb samples. The methodology has then been successfully extended for predicting the effect of extrinsic doping elements on the thermoelectric properties of ZnSb. Germanium and tin seem to be promising p-type doping elements. In addition, we give, for the first tim…
We report a combined theoretical and experimental search for thermoelectric materials based on semiconducting zinc antimony. Influence of three new doping elements (sodium, potassium and boron) on the electronic properties is investigated as well as the carrier concentration and temperature dependence of the thermoelectric coefficients obtained through density-functional calculations and Boltzmann transport theory. Distortion of the electron arrangement caused by the doping elements is displayed as a deformation charge density around the atoms. Based on the band structures, the density of stat…
Energy filtering has been suggested by many authors as a means to improve thermoelectric properties. The idea is to filter away low-energy charge carriers in order to increase Seebeck coefficient without compromising electronic conductivity. This concept was investigated in the present paper for a specific material (ZnSb) by a combination of first-principles atomic-scale calculations, Boltzmann transport theory, and experimental studies of the same system. The potential of filtering in this material was first quantified, and it was as an example found that the power factor could be enhanced by…
We report on S-doping of ZnSb for S concentrations ranging from 0.02 at% to 2.5 at%. There are no previous reports on S-doping. ZnSb is a thermoelectric material with some advantages for the temperature range 400 K - 600 K. The solid solubility of S in ZnSb was estimated to be lower than 0.1% from observations of precipitates by scanning microscopy. Hall and Seebeck measurements were performed as a function of temperature from 6K to 623 K. The temperature dependence of the electrical properties suggests that S introduces neutral scattering centers for holes in the p-type material. An increase …
We report first principles calculations of the structural, electronic, elastic and vibrational properties of the semiconducting orthorhombic ZnSb compound. We study also the intrinsic point defects in order to eventually improve the thermoelectric properties of this already very promising thermoelectric material. Concerning the electronic properties, in addition to the band structure, we show that the Zn (Sb) crystallographically equivalent atoms are not exactly equivalent from the electronic point of view. Lattice dynamics, elastic and thermodynamic properties are found to be in good agreemen…
The mixed ionic-electronic conductor $β$-Zn$_4$Sb$_3$ is a cheap and high performing thermoelectric material, but under operating conditions with a temperature gradient and a running current, the material decomposes as Zn readily migrates in the structure. Here, we report an improved stability of $β$-Zn$_4$Sb$_3$ by introducing ion-blocking interfaces of stainless steel to segment the sample, produced by a rapid one-step Spark Plasma Sintering synthesis. The stability of the samples is tested under temperature gradients and electric currents, which reveals significantly improved stability of t…
First principles calculations are used to investigate electronic band structure and vibrational spectra of pnictogen substituted ternary skutterudites. We compare the results with the prototypical binary composition CoSb$_3$ to identify the effects of substitutions on the Sb site, and evaluate the potential of ternary skutterudites for thermoelectric applications. Electronic transport coefficients are computed within the Boltzmann transport formalism assuming a constant relaxation time, using a new methodology based on maximally localized Wannier function interpolation. Our results point to a …
Since 2014 the layered semiconductor SnSe in the high-temperature Cmcm phase is known to be the most efficient thermoelectric material. Making use of first-principles calculations we show that its vibrational and thermal transport properties are determined by huge non-perturbative anharmonic effects. We show that the transition from the Cmcm phase to the low-symmetry Pnma is a second-order phase transition driven by the collapse of a zone border phonon, whose frequency vanishes at the transition temperature. Our calculations show that the spectral function of the in-plane vibrational modes are…
SnS and SnSe are isoelectronic materials with a common phase diagram. Recently, SnSe was found to be the most efficient intrinsic thermoelectric material in its high-temperature Cmcm phase above 800 K. Making use of first-principles calculations, here we show that the electronic and vibrational properties of both materials are very similar in this phase and, consequently, SnS is also expected to have a high thermoelectric figure of merit at high temperature in its Cmcm phase. In fact, the electronic power factor and lattice thermal conductivity are comparable for both materials, which ensures …
We report calculations of the electronic structure, vibrational properties and transport for the p-type semiconductors, SrAg$Ch$F ($Ch$=S, Se and Te). We find soft phonons with low frequency optical branches intersecting the acoustic modes below 50 $cm^{-1}$, indicative of a material with low thermal conductivity. The bands at and near the valence band maxima are highly two dimensional, which leads to high thermopowers even at high carrier concentrations, which is a combination that suggests good thermoelectric performance. These materials may be regarded as bulk realizations of superlattice t…
Engineering of thermoelectric materials requires an understanding of thermal conduction by lattice and electronic degrees of freedom. Filled skutterudites denote a large family of materials suitable for thermoelectric applications where reduced lattice thermal conduction attributed to localized low-frequency vibrations (rattling) of filler cations inside large cages of the structure. In this work, a multi-wavelength method of exploiting X-ray dynamical diffraction in single crystals of CeFe$_4$P$_{12}$ is presented and applied to resolve the atomic amplitudes of vibrations. The results suggest…
On the basis of density functional theory (DFT) calculations thermoelectric properties are derived for Sb-doped skutterudites MPt$_4$Ge$_{12-x}$Sb$_x$ with M=Ba,La,Th. It is predicted that the originally very small absolute values of Seebeck coefficients $|S|$ of the undoped compounds is increased by factors of 10 or more for suitable dopings. The optimal dopings correspond to a "magic" valence electron number for which all electronic states up to a (pseudo)gap are filled. The theoretical findings are corroborated by measurements of $S$ for LaPt$_4$Ge$_{12-x}$Sb$_x$ skutterudites. DFT derived …
A suite measurements of the electrical, thermal, and vibrational properties are conducted on palladium sulfide (PdS) in order to investigate its thermoelectric performance. The tetragonal structure with the space group $P$42/$m$ for PdS is determined from X-ray diffraction measurement. The unique temperature dependence of mobility suggests that acoustic phonons and ion impurity scattering are two dominant scattering mechanisms within the compound. The obtained power factor of $27$ $μ$Wcm$^{-1}$K$^{-2}$ at 800 K is the largest value in the remaining transition-metal sulfides studied so far. The…
SnSe is a topical thermoelectric material with a low thermal conductivity which is linked to its unique crystal structure. We use low-temperature heat capacity measurements to demonstrate the presence of two characteristic vibrational energy scales in SnSe with Debye temperatures thetaD1 = 345(9) K and thetaD2 = 154(2) K. These hard and soft substructures are quantitatively linked to the strong and weak Sn-Se bonds in the crystal structure. The heat capacity model predicts the temperature evolution of the unit cell volume, confirming that this two-substructure model captures the basic thermal …
SnSe monolayers experience a temperature induced two-dimensional Pnm2$_1 \to$ P4/nmm structural transformation precipitated by the softening of vibrational modes. The standard theoretical treatment of thermoelectricity---which relies on a zero temperature phonon dispersion and on a zero temperature electronic structure---is incapable of describing thermoelectric phenomena induced by structural transformations. Relying on structural data obtained from {\em ab initio} molecular dynamics calculations that is utilized in a non-standard way to inform of electronic and vibrational transport coeffici…
Lattice thermal conductivities $κ_{\rm L}$ of type-I clathrates encapsulating "off-center" guest atoms behave in a way that is sharply different from those of conventional crystals such as on-center type-I clathrates. The latter decreases with increasing temperature according to 1/$T$ above a few tens\,K. While, $κ_{\rm L}$ of off-center clathrates increase T-linearly above a few tens K. Further increasing temperature above $T\gtrsim$100 K, $κ_{\rm L}$ saturates without exhibiting appreciable T-dependence. In this temperature regime, the standard formulation of $κ_{\rm L}$ based on the perturb…
First principles calculations were carried out to study the phase stability and thermoelectric properties of the naturally occurring marcasite phase of FeS$_2$ at ambient condition as well as under pressure. Two distinct density functional approaches has been used to investigate the above mentioned properties. The plane wave pseudopotential approach was used to study the phase stability and structural, elastic, and vibrational properties. The full potential linear augment plane wave method has been used to study the electronic structure and thermoelectric properties. From the total energy calc…
We calculate the lattice thermal conductivities of the pyrite-type ZnSe2 at pressures of 0 and 10 GPa using the linearized phonon Boltzmann transport equation. We obtain a very low value [0.69 W/(mK) at room temperature at 0 GPa], comparable to the best thermoelectric materials. The vibrational spectrum is characterized by the isolated high-frequency optical phonon modes due to the stretching of Se-Se dimers and low-frequency optical phonon modes due to the rotation of Zn atoms around these dimers. The low-frequency optical phonon modes are characterized by a strong anharmonicity and will subs…
Layer-structured materials are often considered to be good candidates for thermoelectric materials, because they tend to exhibit intrinsically low thermal conductivity as a result of atomic interlayer interactions. The electrical properties of layer-structured materials can be easily tuned using various methods, such as band modification and intercalation. We report TiNBr, as a member of the layer-structured metal nitride halide system MNX (M = Ti, Zr, Hf; X = Cl, Br, I), and it exhibits an ultrahigh Seebeck coefficient of 2215 $μV/K$ at 300K. The value of the dimensionless figure of merit, ZT…
We report first-principles density-functional study of electron-phonon interactions and thermoelectric transport properties of full-Heusler compounds Sr$_{2}$BiAu and Sr$_{2}$SbAu. Our results show that ultrahigh intrinsic bulk thermoelectric performance across a wide range of temperatures is physically possible and point to the presence of multiply degenerate and highly dispersive carrier pockets as the key factor for achieving it. Sr$_{2}$BiAu, which features ten energy-aligned low effective mass pockets (six along $Γ-X$ and four at $L$), is predicted to deliver $n$-type $zT=0.4-4.9$ at $T=1…
In this paper we infer the structure of Pd40Ni40P20 from experimental diffraction data and ab initio interactions using Force Enhanced Atomic Refinement (FEAR). Our model accurately reproduces known experimental signatures of the system and is more efficient than conventional melt-quench schemes. We critically evaluate the local order, carry out detailed comparisons to extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) experiments and also discuss the electronic structure. We thoroughly explore the lattice dynamics of the system, and describe a vibrational localized-to-extended transition and di…
It is widely accepted that structural glasses and disordered crystals exhibit anomalies in the their thermal, mechanical and acoustic properties as manifestations of the breakdown of the long-wavelength approximation in a disordered dissipative environment. However, the same type of glassy-like anomalies (i.e. boson peak in the vibrational density of states (VDOS) above the Debye level, peak in the normalized specific heat at $T\simeq10 K$ etc) have been recently observed also in perfectly ordered crystals, including thermoelectric compounds. Here we present a theory that predicts these surpri…

The thermoelectric properties of a molecular junction model, appropriate for large molecules such as fullerenes, are studied within a non-equilibrium adiabatic approach in the linear regime at room temperature. A self-consistent calculation is implemented for electron and phonon thermal conductance showing that both increase with the inclusion of the electron-vibration coupling. Moreover, we show that the deviations from the Wiedemann-Franz law are progressively reduced upon increasing the interaction between electronic and vibrational degrees of freedom. Consequently, the junction thermoelect…
Crystals and glasses exhibit fundamentally different heat conduction mechanisms: the periodicity of crystals allows for the excitation of propagating vibrational waves that carry heat, as first discussed by Peierls; in glasses, the lack of periodicity breaks Peierls' picture and heat is mainly carried by the coupling of vibrational modes, often described by a harmonic theory introduced by Allen and Feldman. Anharmonicity or disorder are thus the limiting factors for thermal conductivity in crystals or glasses; hitherto, no transport equation has been able to account for both. Here, we derive s…
The thermoelectric properties of the three pyrite-type IIB-VIA2 dichalcogenides (ZnS2, CdS2 and CdSe2) are systematically investigated and compared with those of the prototype ZnSe2 in order to optimize their thermoelectric properties. Using the phonon Boltzmann transport equation, we find that they all have ultralow lattice thermal conductivities. By analyzing their vibrational properties, these are attributed to soft phonon modes derived from the loosely bound rattling-like metal atoms and to strong anharmonicities caused by the vibrations of all atoms perpendicular to the strongly bound non…
Disorder enhances desired properties, as well as creating new avenues for synthesizing materials. For instance, hardness and yield stress are improved by solid-solution strengthening, a result of distortions and atomic size mismatches. Thermo-chemical stability is increased by the preference of chemically disordered mixtures for high-symmetry super-lattices. Vibrational thermal conductivity is decreased by force-constant disorder without sacrificing mechanical strength and stiffness. Thus, high-entropy ceramics propel a wide range of applications: from wear resistant coatings and thermal and e…
We propose to reduce the thermal conductivity of silicon nanowires (SiNWs) by introducing small hole at the centre, i.e. construct silicon nanotube (SiNT) structures. Our numerical results demonstrate that a very small hole (only 1% reduction in cross section area) can induce a 35% reduction in room temperature thermal conductivity. Moreover, with the same cross section area, thermal conductivity of SiNT is only about 33% of that of SiNW at room temperature. The spatial distribution of vibrational energy reveals that localization modes are concentrated on the inner and outer surfaces of SiNTs.…
Alloying is widely used as a means to fine-tune the properties of thermoelectric materials by reducing the lattice thermal conductivity. However, the effects of compositional variation on the lattice dynamics of alloy systems are not well understood, due in part to the difficulty of building realistic first-principles models of structurally-complex solid solutions. This work builds on our previous study of Sn$_{n}$(S$_{1-x}$Se$_{x}$)$_{m}$ solid solutions [Gunn $\textit{et al.}$, $\textit{Chem. Mater.}$ $\textbf{31}$, $\textit{10}$, 3672, $\textbf{2019}$] to explore the lattice dynamics of the…

The investigation of thermal transport properties of novel two dimensional materials is crucially important in order to assess their potential to be used in future technological applications, such as thermoelectric power generation. In this respect, lattice thermal transport properties of monolayer structures of the group \textrm{VA} elements (P, As, Sb, Bi, PAs, PSb, PBi, AsSb, AsBi, SbBi, P$_{3}$As$_{1}$, P$_{3}$Sb$_{1}$, P$_{1}$As$_{3}$, As$_{3}$Sb$_{1}$) with black phosphorus like puckered structure were systematically investigated by first principles calculations and an iterative solution…
Using first-principles density functional theory calculations, we investigate a family of stable two-dimensional crystals with chemical formula $A_2B_2$, where $A$ and $B$ belong to groups IV and V, respectively ($A$ = C, Si, Ge, Sn, Pb; $B$ = N, P, As, Sb, Bi). Two structural symmetries of hexagonal lattices $P\bar{6}m2$ and $P\bar{3}m1$ are shown to be dynamically stable, named as $α$- and $β$-phases correspondingly. Both phases have similar cohesive energies, and the $α$-phase is found to be energetically favorable for structures except CP, CAs, CSb and CBi, for which the $β$-phase is favor…
La-filled skutterudites LaxCo4Sb12 (x : 0.25 and 0.5) have been synthesized and sintered in one step under high-pressure conditions at 3.5 GPa in a piston-cylinder hydrostatic press. The structural properties of the reaction products were characterized by synchrotron X-ray powder diffraction, clearly showing an uneven filling factor of the skutterudite phases, confirmed by transmission electron microscopy. The non-homogeneous distribution of La filling atoms is adequate to produce a significant decrease in lattice thermal conductivity, mainly due to strain field scattering of high-energy phono…
Atomic dynamics takes a fundamental part in numbers of physical properties of solids like high-Tc superconductivity, semiconducting transports, and thermoelectricity. Perovskite CH3NH3PbI3 exhibits outstanding photovoltaic performances, but the exact physical scenario has not been established yet, due to the inadequate understanding of the atomic dynamics and exceptional transport properties. We present a complete atomic dynamic picture consisting of phonons, rotational modes of protons and molecular vibrational modes, which is constructed by carrying out high-resolution time-of-flight inelast…
Two-dimensional (2D) ZrS2 monolayer (ML) has emerged as a promising candidate for thermoelectric (TE) device applications due to its high TE figure of merit, which is mainly contributed by its inherently low lattice thermal conductivity. This work investigates the effect of the lattice anharmonicity driven by temperature-dependent phonon dispersions on thermal transport of ZrS2 ML. The calculations are based on the self-consistent phonon (SCP) theory to calculate the thermodynamic parameters along with the lattice thermal conductivity. The higher- order (quartic) force constants were extracted…
Identification of novel materials with enhanced thermoelectric (TE) performance is critical for advancing TE research. In this direction, this is the first report on TE properties of low-cost, nontoxic, and abundant core-shell Cu@Cu2O nanocomposites (NCs) synthesized using a facile and cheap solution-phase method. They show ultralow thermal conductivity of nearly 10-3 of copper bulk value, large thermopower ~0.373 mVK-1, and consequently, a TE figure of merit (ZT) of 0.16 at 320 K which is larger than those of many of the potential TE materials such as PbTe, SnSe and SiGe, showing its potentia…

The long-wavelength behavior of vibrational modes plays a central role in carrier transport, phonon-assisted optical properties, superconductivity, and thermomechanical and thermoelectric properties of materials. Here, we present general invariance and equilibrium conditions of the lattice potential; these allow to recover the quadratic dispersions of flexural phonons in low-dimensional materials, in agreement with the phenomenological model for long-wavelength bending modes. We also prove that for any low-dimensional material the bending modes can have a purely out-of-plane polarization in th…
Recent advances in our understanding of thermal transport in nanocrystalline systems are responsible for the integration of new technologies into advanced energy systems, including thermoelectric refrigeration systems and renewable energy platforms. However, there is little understanding of heat energy transport mechanisms that govern the thermal properties of disordered nanocomposites. In this work, we explore thermal transport mechanisms in disordered packings of amorphous nanoparticles with and without a polymer filling the interstices in order to quantify the impact of thermal boundary sca…
