The main topic of this present thesis is the study of the asymptotic behaviour of sequences modulo 1. In particular, by using ergodic and dynamical methods, a new insight to problems concerning the asymptotic behaviour of multidimensional sequences can be given, and a criterion to construct new multidimensional uniformly distributed sequences is provided. The starting point to do this, is to look at the orbit, i.e. the sequence of iterates, of a uniquely ergodic transformation T defined on [0,1]. The unique ergodicity of the transformation has the following consequence: the orbit of x under T is a uniformly distributed sequence. We devoted the first chapter entirely on classical topics in uniform distribution theory (UDT) and ergodic theory. This provides the basic requirements for a complete understanding of the following chapters, even to a reader who is not familiar with the subject. Chapter 2 deals with the LS-sequences of points. In Chapter 3, the method used to construct the transformation T is the so-called cutting-stacking technique. In particular, we were able to prove the ergodicity of T and that the orbit of the origin under this map coincides with an LS-sequence which turns out to be a low-discrepancy one. In Chapter 4, another approach from ergodic theory is used. This approach is based on the study of dynamical systems arising from numeration systems defined by linear recurrences. In this way we could not only prove that the transformation T defined in Chapter 3 is uniquely ergodic, but we could also construct multidimensional uniformly distributed sequences. In Chapter 5 we found bounds for integrals of two-dimensional, piecewise constant functions with respect to copulas. To solve this problem, we drew a connection to linear assignment problems. The approximation technique was applied to problems in financial mathematics and UDT.
We consider a certain equidistributed sequence of rational numbers constructed from the primes. In particular, we determine the sharp convergence rate for the star discrepancy of said sequence. Our arguments are based on well-known discrepancy estimates for inversive congruential pseudorandom numbers together with asymptotic formulae involving prime numbers.
In this paper we extend a result of Levin, who proved a lower bound on the star discrepancy of generalized Halton sequences in positive integer bases, to rational bases.
The $LS$-sequences are a parametric family of sequences of points in the unit interval. They were introduced by Carbone, who also proved that under an appropriate choice of the parameters $L$ and $S$, such sequences are low-discrepancy. The aim of the present paper is to provide explicit constants in the bounds of the discrepancy of $LS$-sequences. Further, we generalize the construction of Carbone and construct a new class of sequences of points in the unit interval, the generalized $LS$-sequences.
We study the $L_p$ discrepancy of digital NUT sequences which are an important sub-class of digital $(0,1)$-sequences in the sense of Niederreiter. The main result is a lower bound for certain sub-classes of digital NUT sequences.
Let $ (H_s(n))_{n \geq 1} $ be an $s-$dimensional Halton's sequence. Let $D_N$ be the discrepancy of the sequence $ (H_s(n))_{n = 1}^{N} $. It is known that $ND_N =O(\ln^s N)$ as $N \to \infty $. In this paper we prove that this estimate is exact: $$ \overline{\lim}_{ N \to \infty} N \ln^{-s}(N) D_N >0. $$
We study the extreme $L_p$ discrepancy of infinite sequences in the $d$-dimensional unit cube, which uses arbitrary sub-intervals of the unit cube as test sets. This is in contrast to the classical star $L_p$ discrepancy, which uses exclusively intervals that are anchored in the origin as test sets. We show that for any dimension $d$ and any $p>1$ the extreme $L_p$ discrepancy of every infinite sequence in $[0,1)^d$ is at least of order of magnitude $(\log N)^{d/2}$, where $N$ is the number of considered initial terms of the sequence. For $p \in (1,\infty)$ this order of magnitude is best poss…
Van der Corput and Halton sequences are well-known low-discrepancy sequences. Almost twenty years ago Ninomiya defined analogues of van der Corput sequences for $β$-numeration and proved that they also form low-discrepancy sequences if $β$ is a Pisot number. Only very recently Robert Tichy and his co-authors succeeded in proving that $\boldsymbolβ$-adic Halton sequences are equidistributed for certain parameters $\boldsymbolβ=(β_1,\ldots,β_s)$ using methods from ergodic theory. In the present paper we continue this research and give discrepancy estimates for $\boldsymbolβ$-adic Halton sequence…
The goal of this overview article is to give a tangible presentation of recent breakthrough works in discrepancy theory by M. B. Levin. These works provide proofs for the exact lower discrepancy bounds of Halton's sequence and a certain class of $(t, s)$-sequences. Our survey aims at highlighting the major ideas of the proofs and we discuss further implications of the employed methods. Moreover, we derive extensions of Levin's results.
Let $d_N=ND_N(ω)$ be the discrepancy of the Van der Corput sequence in base $2$. We improve on the known bounds for the number of indices $N$ such that $d_N\leq \log N/100$. Moreover, we show that the summatory function of $d_N$ satisfies an exact formula involving a $1$-periodic, continuous function. Finally, we show that $d_N$ is invariant under digit reversal in base $2$.
It is known that there is a constant $c>0$ such that for every sequence $x_1, x_2,\ldots$ in $[0,1)$ we have for the star discrepancy $D^{*}_N$ of the first $N$ elements of the sequence that $N D^{*}_N\geq c\cdot \log N$ holds for infinitely many $N$. Let $c^{*}$ be the supremum of all such $c$ with this property. We show $c^{*}>0.065664679\ldots$, thereby slightly improving the estimates known until now.
In any dimension $d \geq 2$, there is no known example of a low-discrepancy sequence which possess Poisssonian pair correlations. This is in some sense rather surprising, because low-discrepancy sequences always have $β$-Poissonian pair correlations for all $0 < β< \tfrac{1}{d}$ and are therefore arbitrarily close to having Poissonian pair correlations (which corresponds to the case $β= \tfrac{1}{d}$). In this paper, we further elaborate on the closeness of the two notions. We show that $d$-dimensional Kronecker sequences for badly approximable vectors $\vecα$ with an arbitrary small uniformly…
We consider the star discrepancy of two-dimensional sequences made up as a hybrid between a Kronecker sequence and a perturbed Halton sequence in base 2, where the perturbation is achieved by a digital-sequence construction in the sense of Niederreiter whose generating matrix contains a periodic perturbing sequence of a given period length. Under the assumption that the Kronecker sequence involves a parameter with bounded continued fraction coefficients sharp discrepancy estimates are obtained. Furthermore, we study the problem from a metric point of view as well. Finally, we also present shar…
Let $ (H_s(n))_{n \geq 1} $ be an $s-$dimensional generalized Halton's sequence. Let $\emph{D}^{*}_N$ be the discrepancy of the sequence $ (H_s(n) )_{n = 1}^{N} $. It is known that $D^{*}_{N} =O(\ln^s N)$ as $N \to \infty $. In this paper, we prove that this estimate is exact. Namely, there exists a constant $C(H_s)>0$, such that $$ \max_{1 \leq M \leq N} M \emph{D}^{*}_{M} \geq C(H_s) \log_2^s N \quad {\rm for} \; \; N=2,3,... \; . $$
It is well known that the $L_p$-discrepancy for $p \in [1,\infty]$ of the van der Corput sequence is of exact order of magnitude $O((\log N)/N)$. This however is for $p \in (1,\infty)$ not best possible with respect to the lower bounds according to Roth and Proinov. For the case $p=2$ it is well known that the symmetrization trick due to Davenport leads to the optimal $L_2$-discrepancy rate $O(\sqrt{\log N}/N)$ for the symmetrized van der Corput sequence. In this note we show that this result holds for all $p \in (1,\infty)$. The proof is based on an estimate of the Haar coefficients of the co…

Let $(H(n))_{n \geq 0} $ be a $2-$dimensional Halton's sequence. Let $D_{2} ( (H(n))_{n=0}^{N-1}) $ be the $L_2$-discrepancy of $ (H_n)_{n=0}^{N-1} $. It is known that $\limsup_{N \to \infty } (\log N)^{-1} D_{2} ( H(n) )_{n=0}^{N-1} >0$. In this paper, we prove that $$D_{2} (( H(n) )_{n=0}^{N-1}) =O( \log N) \quad {\rm for} \; \; N \to \infty ,$$ i.e., we found the smallest possible order of magnitude of $L_2$-discrepancy of a 2-dimensional Halton's sequence. The main tool is the theorem on linear forms in the $p$-adic logarithm.
The discrepancy function measures the deviation of the empirical distribution of a point set in $[0,1]^d$ from the uniform distribution. In this paper, we study the classical discrepancy function with respect to the BMO and exponential Orlicz norms, as well as Sobolev, Besov and Triebel-Lizorkin norms with dominating mixed smoothness. We give sharp bounds for the discrepancy function under such norms with respect to infinite sequences.
The aim of this paper is to develop greedy algorithms which generate uniformly distributed sequences in the $d$-dimensional unit cube $[0,1]^d$. The figures of merit are three different variants of $L_2$ discrepancy. Theoretical results along with numerical experiments suggest that the resulting sequences have excellent distribution properties. The approach we follow here is motivated by recent work of Steinerberger and Pausinger who consider similar greedy algorithms, where they minimize functionals that can be related to the star discrepancy or energy of point sets. In contrast to many greed…
Let $ (\bx(n))_{n \geq 1} $ be an $s-$dimensional Niederreiter-Xing sequence in base $b$. Let $D((\bx(n))_{n = 1}^{N})$ be the discrepancy of the sequence $ (\bx(n))_{n = 1}^{N} $. It is known that $N D((\bx(n))_{n = 1}^{N}) =O(\ln^s N)$ as $N \to \infty $. In this paper, we prove that this estimate is exact. Namely, there exists a constant $K>0$, such that $$ \inf_{\bw \in [0,1)^s} \sup_{1 \leq N \leq b^m} N D((\bx(n)\oplus \bw)_{n = 1}^{N}) \geq K m^s \quad {\rm for} \; \; m=1,2,...\;. $$ We also get similar results for other explicit constructions of $(t,s)$ sequences.
An important result of H. Weyl states that for every sequence $\left(a_{n}\right)_{n\geq 1}$ of distinct positive integers the sequence of fractional parts of $\left(a_{n} α\right)_{n \geq1}$ is uniformly distributed modulo one for almost all $α$. However, in general it is a very hard problem to calculate the precise order of convergence of the discrepancy $D_{N}$ of $\left(\left\{a_{n} α\right\}\right)_{n \geq 1}$ for almost all $α$. By a result of R. C. Baker this discrepancy always satisfies $N D_{N} = \mathcal{O} \left(N^{\frac{1}{2}+\varepsilon}\right)$ for almost all $α$ and all $\vareps…
We say that a sequence $\{x_n\}_{n \geq 1}$ in $[0,1)$ has Poissonian pair correlations if \begin{equation*} \lim_{N \rightarrow \infty} \frac{1}{N} \# \left\{ 1 \leq l \neq m \leq N \, : \, \left\lVert x_l-x_m \right\rVert < \frac{s}{N} \right\} = 2s \end{equation*} for all $s>0$. In this note we show that if the convergence in the above expression is - in a certain sense - fast, then this implies a small discrepancy for the sequence $\{x_n\}_{n \geq 1}$. As an easy consequence it follows that every sequence with Poissonian pair correlations is uniformly distributed in $[0,1)$.
M. Levin defined a real number $x$ that satisfies that the sequence of the fractional parts of $(2^n x)_{n\geq 1}$ are such that the first $N$ terms have discrepancy $O((\log N)^2/ N)$, which is the smallest discrepancy known for this kind of parametric sequences. In this work we show that the fractional parts of the sequence $(2^n x)_{n\geq 1}$ fail to have Poissonian pair correlations. Moreover, we show that all the real numbers $x$ that are variants of Levin's number using Pascal triangle matrices are such that the fractional parts of the sequence $(2^n x)_{n\geq 1}$ fail to have Poissonian…
A generic uniformly distributed sequence $(x_n)_{n \in \mathbb{N}}$ in $[0,1)$ possesses Poissonian pair correlations (PPC). Vice versa, it has been proven that a sequence with PPC is uniformly distributed. Grepstad and Larcher gave an explicit upper bound for the discrepancy of a sequence given that it has PPC. As a first result, we generalize here their result to the case of $α$-pair correlations with $0 < α< 1$. Since the highest possible level of uniformity is achieved by low-discrepancy sequences it is tempting to assume that there are examples of such sequences which also have PPC. Altho…

This paper adresses the question whether the $LS$-sequences constructed by Carbone yield indeed a new family of low discrepancy sequences. While it is well known that the case $S=0$ corresponds to van der Corput sequences, we prove here that the case $S=1$ can be traced back to two-sided Kronecker sequences and moreover that for $S \geq 2$ none of these two types occurs anymore. In addition, our approach allows for an improved discrepancy bound for $S=1$ and $L$ arbitrary.
The star discrepancy $D_N^*(\mathcal{P})$ is a quantitative measure for the irregularity of distribution of a finite point set $\mathcal{P}$ in the multi-dimensional unit cube which is intimately related to the integration error of quasi-Monte Carlo algorithms. It is known that for every integer $N \ge 2$ there are point sets $\mathcal{P}$ in $[0,1)^d$ with $|\mathcal{P}|=N$ and $D_N^*(\mathcal{P}) =O((\log N)^{d-1}/N)$. However, for small $N$ compared to the dimension $d$ this asymptotically excellent bound is useless (e.g. for $N \le {\rm e}^{d-1}$). In 2001 it has been shown by Heinrich, No…
$k$-level correlation is a local statistic of sequences modulo 1, describing the local spacings of $k$-tuples of elements. For $k = 2$ this is also known as pair correlation. We show that there exists a well spaced increasing sequence of reals with additive energy of order $N^3$ and Poissonian $k$-level correlation for all integers $k \geq 2$, answering in the affirmative a question raised by Aistleitner, El-Baz, and Munsch. The construction is probabilistic, and so we do not obtain a specific sequence satisfying this condition. To prove this, we show that random perturbations of a sequence wi…
M. B. Levin used Sobol-Faure low discrepancy sequences with Pascal matrices modulo $2$ to construct, for each integer $b$, a real number $x$ such that the first $N$ terms of the sequence $(b^n x \mod 1)_{n\geq 1}$ have discrepancy $O((\log N)^2/N)$. This is the lowest discrepancy known for this kind of sequences. In this note we characterize Levin's construction in terms of nested perfect necklaces, which are a variant of the classical de Bruijn necklaces. Moreover, we show that every real number $x$ whose base $b$ expansion is the concatenation of nested perfect necklaces of exponentially inc…
For all $s \geq 1$ and $N \geq 1$ there exist sequences $(z_1,\ldots,z_N)$ in $[0,1]^s$ such that the star-discrepancy of these points can be bounded by $$D_N^*(z_1,\ldots,z_N) \leq c \frac{\sqrt{s}}{\sqrt{N}}.$$ The best known value for the constant is $c=10$ as has been calculated by Aistleitner in \cite{Ais11}. In this paper we improve the bound to $c=9$.
We present an explicit construction of infinite sequences of points $(\boldsymbol{x}_0,\boldsymbol{x}_1, \boldsymbol{x}_2, \ldots)$ in the $d$-dimensional unit-cube whose periodic $L_2$-discrepancy satisfies $$L_{2,N}^{\rm per}(\{\boldsymbol{x}_0,\boldsymbol{x}_1,\ldots, \boldsymbol{x}_{N-1}\}) \le C_d N^{-1} (\log N)^{d/2} \quad \mbox{for all } N \ge 2,$$ where the factor $C_d > 0$ depends only on the dimension $d$. The construction is based on higher order digital sequences as introduced by J. Dick in the year 2008. The result is best possible in the order of magnitude in $N$ according to a …
In [Mas82] and [Vee78] it was proved independently that almost every interval exchange transformation is uniquely ergodic. The Birkhoff ergodic theorem implies that these maps mainly have uniformly distributed orbits. This raises the question under which conditions the orbits yield low-discrepancy sequences. The case of $n=2$ intervals corresponds to circle rotation, where conditions for low-discrepancy are well-known. In this paper, we give corresponding conditions in the case $n=3$. Furthermore, we construct infinitely many interval exchange transformations with low-discrepancy orbits for $n…
We derive an inequality on the discrepancy of sequences on the ring of $p$-adic integers $\ZZ_p$ using techniques from Fourier analysis. The inequality is used to obtain an upper bound on the discrepancy of the sequence $α_n = na +b$, where $a$ and $b$ are elements of $\ZZ_p$. This is a $p$-adic analogue of the classical LeVeque inequality on the circle group $\RR/\ZZ$.
