Let $(H(n))_{n \geq 0} $ be a $2-$dimensional Halton's sequence. Let $D_{2} ( (H(n))_{n=0}^{N-1}) $ be the $L_2$-discrepancy of $ (H_n)_{n=0}^{N-1} $. It is known that $\limsup_{N \to \infty } (\log N)^{-1} D_{2} ( H(n) )_{n=0}^{N-1} >0$. In this paper, we prove that $$D_{2} (( H(n) )_{n=0}^{N-1}) =O( \log N) \quad {\rm for} \; \; N \to \infty ,$$ i.e., we found the smallest possible order of magnitude of $L_2$-discrepancy of a 2-dimensional Halton's sequence. The main tool is the theorem on linear forms in the $p$-adic logarithm.
In this paper we extend a result of Levin, who proved a lower bound on the star discrepancy of generalized Halton sequences in positive integer bases, to rational bases.
Van der Corput and Halton sequences are well-known low-discrepancy sequences. Almost twenty years ago Ninomiya defined analogues of van der Corput sequences for $β$-numeration and proved that they also form low-discrepancy sequences if $β$ is a Pisot number. Only very recently Robert Tichy and his co-authors succeeded in proving that $\boldsymbolβ$-adic Halton sequences are equidistributed for certain parameters $\boldsymbolβ=(β_1,\ldots,β_s)$ using methods from ergodic theory. In the present paper we continue this research and give discrepancy estimates for $\boldsymbolβ$-adic Halton sequence…
We consider the star discrepancy of two-dimensional sequences made up as a hybrid between a Kronecker sequence and a perturbed Halton sequence in base 2, where the perturbation is achieved by a digital-sequence construction in the sense of Niederreiter whose generating matrix contains a periodic perturbing sequence of a given period length. Under the assumption that the Kronecker sequence involves a parameter with bounded continued fraction coefficients sharp discrepancy estimates are obtained. Furthermore, we study the problem from a metric point of view as well. Finally, we also present shar…
In this paper we investigate the special subsequence of the Halton sequence indexed by $\lfloorβn\rfloor$ with $β\in \mathbb{R}$ and prove a metric almost low- discrepancy result.
In this paper we investigate the distribution properties of hybrid sequences which are made by combining Halton sequences in the ring of polynomials and digital Kronecker sequences. We give a full criterion for the uniform distribution and prove results on the discrepancy of such hybrid sequences.

The goal of this overview article is to give a tangible presentation of recent breakthrough works in discrepancy theory by M. B. Levin. These works provide proofs for the exact lower discrepancy bounds of Halton's sequence and a certain class of $(t, s)$-sequences. Our survey aims at highlighting the major ideas of the proofs and we discuss further implications of the employed methods. Moreover, we derive extensions of Levin's results.
Mordechay B. Levin has constructed a number $λ$ which is normal in base 2, and such that the sequence $(\left\{2^n λ\right\})_{n=0,1,2,\ldots}$ has very small discrepancy $D_N$. Indeed we have $N\cdot D_N = \mathcal{O} \left(\left(\log N\right)^2\right)$. This construction technique of Levin was generalized by Becher and Carton, who generated normal numbers via perfect nested necklaces, and they showed that for these normal numbers the same upper discrepancy estimate holds as for the special example of Levin. In this paper now we derive an upper discrepancy bound for so-called semi-perfect nes…

We derive an inequality on the discrepancy of sequences on the ring of $p$-adic integers $\ZZ_p$ using techniques from Fourier analysis. The inequality is used to obtain an upper bound on the discrepancy of the sequence $α_n = na +b$, where $a$ and $b$ are elements of $\ZZ_p$. This is a $p$-adic analogue of the classical LeVeque inequality on the circle group $\RR/\ZZ$.
We prove that the the discrepancy of arithmetic progressions in the $d$-dimensional grid $\{1, \dots, N\}^d$ is within a constant factor depending only on $d$ of $N^{\frac{d}{2d+2}}$. This extends the case $d=1$, which is a celebrated result of Roth and of Matoušek and Spencer, and removes the polylogarithmic factor from the previous upper bound of Valkó from about two decades ago. We further prove similarly tight bounds for grids of differing side lengths in many cases.
The star discrepancy $D_N^*(\mathcal{P})$ is a quantitative measure for the irregularity of distribution of a finite point set $\mathcal{P}$ in the multi-dimensional unit cube which is intimately related to the integration error of quasi-Monte Carlo algorithms. It is known that for every integer $N \ge 2$ there are point sets $\mathcal{P}$ in $[0,1)^d$ with $|\mathcal{P}|=N$ and $D_N^*(\mathcal{P}) =O((\log N)^{d-1}/N)$. However, for small $N$ compared to the dimension $d$ this asymptotically excellent bound is useless (e.g. for $N \le {\rm e}^{d-1}$). In 2001 it has been shown by Heinrich, No…
In the present paper we establish bounds for the size of the spectral gap for actions of algebraic groups on certain homogeneous spaces. Our approach is based on estimating operator norms of suitable averaging operators, and we develop techniques for establishing both upper and lower bounds for such norms. We shall show that this analytic problem is closely related to the arithmetic problem of establishing bounds on the discrepancy of distribution for rational points on algebraic group varieties. As an application, we show how to establish an effective bound for property $τ$ of congruence subg…
A generic uniformly distributed sequence $(x_n)_{n \in \mathbb{N}}$ in $[0,1)$ possesses Poissonian pair correlations (PPC). Vice versa, it has been proven that a sequence with PPC is uniformly distributed. Grepstad and Larcher gave an explicit upper bound for the discrepancy of a sequence given that it has PPC. As a first result, we generalize here their result to the case of $α$-pair correlations with $0 < α< 1$. Since the highest possible level of uniformity is achieved by low-discrepancy sequences it is tempting to assume that there are examples of such sequences which also have PPC. Altho…
This paper is a follow-up to the recent paper "A note on isotropic discrepancy and spectral test of lattice point sets" [J. Complexity, 58:101441, 2020]. We show that the isotropic discrepancy of a lattice point set is at most $d \, 2^{2(d+1)}$ times its spectral test, thereby correcting the dependence on the dimension $d$ and an inaccuracy in the proof of the upper bound in Theorem 2 of the mentioned paper. The major task is to bound the volume of the neighbourhood of the boundary of a convex set contained in the unit cube. Further, we characterize averages of the distance to a lattice point …
Let A_N be an N-point distribution in the unit square in the Euclidean plane. We consider the Discrepancy function D_N(x) in two dimensions with respect to rectangles with lower left corner anchored at the origin and upper right corner at the point x. This is the difference between the actual number of points of A_N in such a rectangle and the expected number of points - N x_1x_2 - in the rectangle. We prove sharp estimates for the BMO norm and the exponential squared Orlicz norm of D_N(x). For example we show that necessarily ||D_N||_(expL^2) >c(logN)^(1/2) for some aboslute constant c>0. On …
We introduce a class of $γ$-negatively dependent random samples. We prove that this class includes, apart from Monte Carlo samples, in particular Latin hypercube samples and Latin hypercube samples padded by Monte Carlo. For a $γ$-negatively dependent $N$-point sample in dimension $d$ we provide probabilistic upper bounds for its star discrepancy with explicitly stated dependence on $N$, $d$, and $γ$. These bounds generalize the probabilistic bounds for Monte Carlo samples from [Heinrich et al., Acta Arith. 96 (2001), 279--302] and [C.~Aistleitner, J.~Complexity 27 (2011), 531--540], and they …
