The shadows cast by non-rotating and rotating modified gravity (MOG) black holes are determined by the two parameters mass $M$ and angular momentum $J=Ma$. The sizes of the shadows cast by the spherically symmetric static Schwarzschild-MOG and Kerr-MOG rotating black holes increase significantly as the free parameter $α$ is increased from zero. The Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) shadow image measurements can determine whether Einstein's general relativity is correct or whether it should be modified in the presence of strong gravitational fields.
Motivated by recent work on rotating black hole shadow [Phys. Rev. D101, 084029 (2020)], we investigate the shadow behaviors of rotating Hayward-de Sitter black hole for static observers at a finite distance in terms of astronomical observables. This paper uses the newly introduced distortion parameter in [arXiv:2006.00685] to describe the shadow's shape quantitatively. We show that the spin parameter would distort shadows and the magnetic monopole charge would increase the degree of deformation. At the same time, the distortion could be relieved because of the cosmological constant and the di…
We study the shadows of disformal black holes in vector-tensor Galileons modified gravity. Our analysis shows that the apparent image of the black hole in the observer's sky is non-spherical and cuspy, which is in contrast to the Kerr and Kerr-Newman cases. The non-trivial silhouette of the apparent image of the black hole provides novel templates for the current astrophysical observations. Moreover, due to the non-minimal coupling of the vector field to gravity the disformal black hole supports regular horizons for spin parameter exceeding the ADM mass. Finally, the shadows of the massless li…
We study the black hole's shadow for Schwarzschild - de Sitter and Kerr - de Sitter metrics with the contribution of the cosmological constant Λ. Based on the reported parameters of the M87* black hole shadow we obtain constraints for the $Λ$ and show the agreement with the cosmological data. It is shown that, the coupling of the Λ-term with the spin parameter reveals peculiarities for the photon spheres and hence for the shadows. Within the parametrized post-Newtonian formalism the constraint for the corresponding Λ-determined parameter is obtained.
The first image of black hole in M87 galaxy taken by Event Horizon Telescope shows that directed observation of supermassive black holes would be a promising way to test general relativity in strong gravity field regime. In order to calculate shadow of rotating black holes with respect to observers located at finite distance, orthonormal tetrads have been introduced in previous works. However, it is noticed that different choice of tetrads does not lead to the same shape of shadow for observers in near regions. In this paper, we alternatively use formula of astrometric observables for calculat…
Observations of the black hole shadow of supermassive black holes, such as Sagittarius A* at the center of our Milky Way galaxy, allow us to study the properties of black holes and the nature of strong-field gravity. According to the Kerr hypothesis, isolated, stationary, and axisymmetric astrophysical black holes are described by the Kerr metric. The Kerr hypothesis holds in General Relativity and in some modified gravity theories, but there are others in which it is violated. In principle, black hole shadow observations can be used to determine if the Kerr metric is the correct description f…
In this paper, the shadows cast by non-rotating and rotating modified gravity black holes are investigated. In addition to the black hole spin parameter $a$ and the inclination angle $θ$ of observer, another parameter $α$ measuring the deviation of gravitational constant from the Newton one is also found to affect the shape of the black hole shadow. The result shows that, for fixed values of $a/M$ and $θ$, the size and perimeter of the shadows cast by the non-rotating and rotating black holes significantly increase with the parameter $α$, while the distortions decrease with $α$. Moreover, the …
We present calculations for the anticipated shadow sizes of Sgr A* and the supermassive black hole in the galaxy M87 in the context of the MOG modified theory of gravity (also known as Scalar-Tensor-Vector-Gravity, or STVG). We demonstrate that mass estimates derived from stellar and gas dynamics in the vicinity of these black holes are the Newtonian masses of the black holes even in the MOG theory. Consequently, shadow sizes increase as a function of the key dimensionless MOG parameter alpha that characterizes the variable gravitational coupling coefficient G, and may offer an observational m…
Ultralight bosons can affect the dynamics of spinning black holes (BHs) via superradiant instability, which can lead to a time evolution of the supermassive BH shadow. We study prospects for witnessing the superradiance-induced BH shadow evolution, considering ultralight vector and tensor fields. We introduce two observables sensitive to the shadow time-evolution: the shadow drift, and the variation in the azimuthal angle lapse associated to the photon ring autocorrelation. The two observables are shown to be highly complementary, depending on the observer's inclination angle. Focusing on the …
In this paper, we study the influence of the axion-plasmon, as proposed in (Phys. Rev. Lett. 120, 181803 (2018)) on the optical properties of the Schwarzschild black hole. Our aim is to provide a test to detect the effects of a fixed axion background using black holes. To accomplish our goal, we explore the effect of the axion-plasmon coupling on the motion of photons around the Schwarzschild black hole and check the possibility of observing those effects upon the black hole shadow, the gravitational deflection angle, Einstein rings and shadow images obtained by radially infalling gas on a bla…
The Event Horizon Telescope collaboration has revealed the first direct image of a black hole, as per the shadow of a Kerr black hole of general relativity. However, other Kerr-like rotating black holes of modified gravity theories cannot be ignored, and they are essential as they offer an arena in which these theories can be tested through astrophysical observation. This motivates us to investigate asymptotically de Sitter rotating black holes wherein interpreting the cosmological constant $Λ$ as the vacuum energy leads to a deformation in the vicinity of a black hole -- new Kerr--de Sitter s…
We study the shadows cast by near-extremal Kerr-MOG black holes for different values of the parameter in modified gravity (MOG). In particular, we consider an isotropic emitter orbiting near such black holes and analytically compute the positions, fluxes and redshift factors of their images. The size of the shadow decreases when the modified parameter is increased. For each shadow, the images of the emitter appear on a special part of the shadow which has a rich structure. The primary image and secondary images are similar to those produced for the near-extremal (high spin) Kerr black hole, bu…
We study the strong gravitational lensing effect around rotating black holes in different gravity theories. By calculating the deflection angle of strong gravitational lensing, we evaluate the lensing observables including the image position, separation, magnification and the time delays between the relativistic images of different rotating black holes. We argue that the differences in image positions, separations between the rotating black hole in modified gravity (MOG) theory and the Kerr black hole in general relativity (GR) are more significant in SgrA* than those in M87*, however the diff…
In this paper we study the effect of the Generalized Uncertainty Principle (GUP) on the shadow of GUP-modified Kerr black hole and the correspondence between the shadow radius and the real part of the quasinormal modes (QNMs). We find that the shadow curvature radius of the GUP-modfied Kerr black hole is bigger compared to the Kerr vacuum solution and increases linearly monotonically with the increase of the GUP parameter. We then investigate the characteristic points of intrinsic curvature of the shadow from a topological point of view to calculate the the angular size for these curvature rad…

Inspired by the observations of supermassive black hole M87* in \emph{Event Horizon Telescope }(EHT) experiment, a remarkable surge in black hole physics is to use the black hole shadow's observables to distinguish general relativity (GR) and modified theories of gravity (MoG), which could also help to disclose the astrophysical nature of the center black hole in EHT observation. In this paper, we shall extensively carry out the study of a charged rotating black hole in conformal gravity, in which the term related with the charge has different falloffs from the usual Kerr-Newman (KN) black hol…
We obtain the shadow cast induced by the rotating black hole with an anisotropic matter. A Killing tensor representing the hidden symmetry is derived explicitly. The existence of separability structure implies a complete integrability of the geodesic motion. We analyze an effective potential around the unstable circular photon orbits to show that one side of the black hole is brighter than the other side. Further, it is shown that the inclusion of the anisotropic matter ($Kr^{2(1-w)}$) has an effect on the observables of the shadow cast. The shadow observables include approximate shadow radius…
We analytically investigate the shadows cast by rotating black holes in the asymptotically safe gravity (ASG) by deriving complete null geodesics and observables using the Hamilton-Jacobi equation and Carter separable method. It turns out that the apparent shape and size of the shadow depend on the ASG parameters ($ζ, γ$) in addition to other black hole parameters ($M, a$). The size of black hole shadows monotonically decreases and shadows get more distorted with increasing values of ASG parameters when compared with the Kerr black hole shadows. In turn, we use shadow observables to estimate b…

Cosmological tensions in current times have opened a wide door to study new probes to constrain cosmological parameters, specifically, to determine the value of the Hubble constant $H_0$ through independent techniques. The two standard methods to measure/infer $H_0$ rely on: (i) anchored observables for the distance ladder, and (ii) establishing the relationship of the $H_0$ to the angular size of the sound horizon in the recombination era assuming a standard Cosmological Constant Cold Dark Matter ($Λ$CDM) cosmology. However, the former requires a calibration with observables at nearby distanc…
We study the shadow cast by rotating black holes surrounded by plasma in the context of the 4D Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet theory of gravity. The metric for these black holes results from applying the Newman-Janis algorithm to a spherically symmetric solution. We obtain the contour of the shadow for a plasma frequency model that allows a separable Hamilton-Jacobi equation. We introduce three observables in order to characterize the position, size, and shape of the shadow.
A certain type of matter with anisotropic pressures can add to the Reissner-Nordström metric a term proportional to a power of the radial coordinate. Using the standard method of separating variables for the Hamilton-Jacobi equation, we study the shadow of the corresponding rotating solution, obtained through the Newman-Janis algorithm. We define and calculate three observables in order to characterize the position, size and shape of the shadow.
This paper investigates the shadow of a charged rotating non-commutative black hole. For this purpose, we first formulate the null geodesics and study the effects of non-commutative charge on the photon orbit. We then explore the effect of spin, angle of inclination as well as non-commutative charge on the silhouette of the shadow. It is found that shape of the shadow deviates from the circle with the decrease in the non-commutative charge. We also discuss observable quantities to study the deformation and distortion in the shadow cast by the black hole which decreases for small values of non-…
Motivated by (i) more and more interest in strong gravitational lensing by supermassive black holes due to the achievement of EHT observations, (ii) the ongoing popular topic on the possibility of Lorentz symmetry being broken in gravitation and its consequences, we will apply the Einstein bumblebee gravity with Lorentz violation (LV) to the study of strong gravitational lensing effect and the black hole shadow of slowly rotating Kerr-like black hole. In the strong gravitational lensing sector, we first calculate the deflection angel; then treating the slowly rotating Kerr-like black hole as s…
In this paper, we study the shadow produced by rotating black holes with charge in the presence of an anisotropic matter field. We obtain the apparent shape and the corresponding observables characterizing the size, oblateness, and deviation of the center, for different values of the parameters of the model. We compare the new results with those corresponding to the Kerr-Newmann spacetime and we also discuss the observational prospects in this case.
In this paper, optical properties of renormalization group improved (RGI) Schwarzschild black hole (BH) are investigated in plasma medium. Starting from the equations of motions in plasma medium, we have shown how the shadow radius of the RGI black hole is modified. To this end, we have computed the deflection angle of light in the weak gravity regime for uniform and non-uniform plasma medium. Importantly, due to the plasma medium, we find that the equations of motions for light obtained from the radiating and infalling/rest gas has to be modified. This in turn, changes and modifies the expres…
