We present our solution to the Yandex Personalized Web Search Challenge. The aim of this challenge was to use the historical search logs to personalize top-N document rankings for a set of test users. We used over 100 features extracted from user- and query-depended contexts to train neural net and tree-based learning-to-rank and regression models. Our final submission, which was a blend of several different models, achieved an NDCG@10 of 0.80476 and placed 4'th amongst the 194 teams winning 3'rd prize.
Major search engines deploy personalized Web results to enhance users' experience, by showing them data supposed to be relevant to their interests. Even if this process may bring benefits to users while browsing, it also raises concerns on the selection of the search results. In particular, users may be unknowingly trapped by search engines in protective information bubbles, called "filter bubbles", which can have the undesired effect of separating users from information that does not fit their preferences. This paper moves from early results on quantification of personalization over Google se…
Personalization is being applied to great extend in many systems. This paper presents a multi-dimensional user data model and its application in web search. Online and Offline activities of the user are tracked for creating the user model. The main phases are identification of relevant documents and the representation of relevance and similarity of the documents. The concepts Keywords, Topics, URLs and clusters are used in the implementation. The algorithms for profiling, grading and clustering the concepts in the user model and algorithm for determining the personalized search results by re-r…
Web search is an integral part of our daily lives. Recently, there has been a trend of personalization in Web search, where different users receive different results for the same search query. The increasing level of personalization is leading to concerns about Filter Bubble effects, where certain users are simply unable to access information that the search engines' algorithm decides is irrelevant. Despite these concerns, there has been little quantification of the extent of personalization in Web search today, or the user attributes that cause it. In light of this situation, we make three co…
Semantic search technology has received more attention in the last years. Compared with the keyword based search, semantic search is used to excavate the latent semantics information and help users find the information items that they want indeed. In this paper, we present a novel approach for semantic search which combines Multi-Categorization Semantic Analysis with personalization technology. The MCSA approach can classify documents into multiple categories, which is distinct from the existing approaches of classifying documents into a single category. Then, the search history and personal i…
Personalization is becoming very important direction in semantic web search for the users that needs to find appropriate information. In this paper, a classification of web personalization is proposed and semantic web search tools are investigated. Building user interest profile is essential for personalizing. Nowadays, semantic web tools use ontologies for personalization because of their advantages. It is important to mention that most of the semantic web search tools use agent technologies for implementation.
Product search is an important way for people to browse and purchase items on E-commerce platforms. While customers tend to make choices based on their personal tastes and preferences, analysis of commercial product search logs has shown that personalization does not always improve product search quality. Most existing product search techniques, however, conduct undifferentiated personalization across search sessions. They either use a fixed coefficient to control the influence of personalization or let personalization take effect all the time with an attention mechanism. The only notable exce…
The World Wide Web caters to the needs of billions of users in heterogeneous groups. Each user accessing the World Wide Web might have his / her own specific interest and would expect the web to respond to the specific requirements. The process of making the web to react in a customized manner is achieved through personalization. This paper proposes a novel model for extracting keywords from a web page with personalization being incorporated into it. The keyword extraction problem is approached with the help of web page segmentation which facilitates in making the problem simpler and solving i…
Information personalization is fertile ground for application of AI techniques. In this article I relate personalization to the ability to capture partial information in an information-seeking interaction. The specific focus is on personalizing interactions at web sites. Using ideas from partial evaluation and explanation-based generalization, I present a modeling methodology for reasoning about personalization. This approach helps identify seven tiers of `personable traits' in web sites.
Search engines play a central role in routing political information to citizens. The algorithmic personalization of search results by large search engines like Google implies that different users may be offered systematically different information. However, measuring the causal effect of user characteristics and behavior on search results in a politically relevant context is challenging. We set up a population of 150 synthetic internet users ("bots") who are randomly located across 25 US cities and are active for several months during the 2020 US Elections and their aftermath. These users diff…
Personalization despite being an effective solution to the problem information overload remains tricky on account of multiple dimensions to consider. Furthermore, the challenge of avoiding overdoing personalization involves estimation of a user's preferences in relation to different queries. This work is an attempt to make inferences about when personalization would be beneficial by relating observable user behavior to his/her social network usage patterns and user-generated content. User behavior on a search system is observed by means of team-draft interleaving whereby results from two retri…
The task of session search focuses on using interaction data to improve relevance for the user's next query at the session level. In this paper, we formulate session search as a personalization task under the framework of learning to rank. Personalization approaches re-rank results to match a user model. Such user models are usually accumulated over time based on the user's browsing behaviour. We use a pre-computed and transparent set of user models based on concepts from the social science literature. Interaction data are used to map each session to these user models. Novel features are then …
Two key, but usually ignored, issues for the evaluation of methods of personalization for information retrieval are: that such evaluation must be of a search session as a whole; and, that people, during the course of an information search session, engage in a variety of activities, intended to accomplish differ- ent goals or intentions. Taking serious account of these factors has major impli- cations for not only evaluation methods and metrics, but also for the nature of the data that is necessary both for understanding and modeling information search, and for evaluation of personalized suppor…

Recent research has shown that the performance of search personalization depends on the richness of user profiles which normally represent the user's topical interests. In this paper, we propose a new embedding approach to learning user profiles, where users are embedded on a topical interest space. We then directly utilize the user profiles for search personalization. Experiments on query logs from a major commercial web search engine demonstrate that our embedding approach improves the performance of the search engine and also achieves better search performance than other strong baselines.
Product search is one of the most popular methods for people to discover and purchase products on e-commerce websites. Because personal preferences often have an important influence on the purchase decision of each customer, it is intuitive that personalization should be beneficial for product search engines. While synthetic experiments from previous studies show that purchase histories are useful for identifying the individual intent of each product search session, the effect of personalization on product search in practice, however, remains mostly unknown. In this paper, we formulate the pro…
Recently, light has been shed on the trend of personalization, which comes into play whenever different search results are being tailored for a group of users who have issued the same search query. The unpalatable fact that myriads of search results are being manipulated has perturbed a horde of people. With regards to that, personalization can be instrumental in spurring the Filter Bubble effects, which revolves around the inability of certain users to gain access to the typified contents that are allegedly irrelevant per the search engine's algorithm. In harmony with that, there is a wealth …
Search personalization aims to tailor search results to each specific user based on the user's personal interests and preferences (i.e., the user profile). Recent research approaches to search personalization by modelling the potential 3-way relationship between the submitted query, the user and the search results (i.e., documents). That relationship is then used to personalize the search results to that user. In this paper, we introduce a novel embedding model based on capsule network, which recently is a breakthrough in deep learning, to model the 3-way relationships for search personalizati…
Many real world problems require fast and efficient lexical comparison of large numbers of short text strings. Search personalization is one such domain. We introduce the use of feature bit vectors using the hashing trick for improving relevance in personalized search and other personalization applications. We present results of several lexical hashing and comparison methods. These methods are applied to a user's historical behavior and are used to predict future behavior. Using a single bit per dimension instead of floating point results in an order of magnitude decrease in data structure siz…
Prior work on personalizing web search results has focused on considering query-and-click logs to capture users individual interests. For product search, extensive user histories about purchases and ratings have been exploited. However, for general entity search, such as for books on specific topics or travel destinations with certain features, personalization is largely underexplored. In this paper, we address personalization of book search, as an exemplary case of entity search, by exploiting sparse user profiles obtained through online questionnaires. We devise and compare a variety of re-r…
In this paper, the Simulated Annealing (SA) based biclustering approach is proposed in which SA is used as an optimization tool for biclustering of web usage data to identify the optimal user profile from the given web usage data. Extracted biclusters are consists of correlated users whose usage behaviors are similar across the subset of web pages of a web site where as these users are uncorrelated for remaining pages of a web site. These results are very useful in web personalization so that it communicates better with its users and for making customized prediction. Also useful for providing …
Information personalization refers to the automatic adjustment of information content, structure, and presentation tailored to an individual user. By reducing information overload and customizing information access, personalization systems have emerged as an important segment of the Internet economy. This paper presents a systematic modeling methodology - PIPE (`Personalization is Partial Evaluation') - for personalization. Personalization systems are designed and implemented in PIPE by modeling an information-seeking interaction in a programmatic representation. The representation supports th…

In this paper, we introduce an embedding model, named CapsE, exploring a capsule network to model relationship triples (subject, relation, object). Our CapsE represents each triple as a 3-column matrix where each column vector represents the embedding of an element in the triple. This 3-column matrix is then fed to a convolution layer where multiple filters are operated to generate different feature maps. These feature maps are reconstructed into corresponding capsules which are then routed to another capsule to produce a continuous vector. The length of this vector is used to measure the plau…
Search results personalization has become an effective way to improve the quality of search engines. Previous studies extracted information such as past clicks, user topical interests, query click entropy and so on to tailor the original ranking. However, few studies have taken into account the sequential information underlying previous queries and sessions. Intuitively, the order of issued queries is important in inferring the real user interests. And more recent sessions should provide more reliable personal signals than older sessions. In addition, the previous search history and user behav…
Search Engine is a Web-page retrieval tool. Nowadays Web searchers utilize their time using an efficient search engine. To improve the performance of the search engine, we are introducing a unique mechanism which will give Web searchers more prominent search results. In this paper, we are going to discuss a domain specific Web search prototype which will generate the predicted Web-page list for user given search string using Boolean bit mask.
Online service platforms (OSPs), such as search engines, news-websites, ad-providers, etc., serve highly pe rsonalized content to the user, based on the profile extracted from his history with the OSP. Although personalization (generally) leads to a better user experience, it also raises privacy concerns for the user---he does not know what is present in his profile and more importantly, what is being used to per sonalize content for him. In this paper, we capture OSP's personalization for an user in a new data structure called the person alization vector ($η$), which is a weighted vector over…
We address the problem of personalizing query completion in a digital commerce setting, in which the bounce rate is typically high and recurring users are rare. We focus on in-session personalization and improve a standard noisy channel model by injecting dense vectors computed from product images at query time. We argue that image-based personalization displays several advantages over alternative proposals (from data availability to business scalability), and provide quantitative evidence and qualitative support on the effectiveness of the proposed methods. Finally, we show how a shared vecto…

A publicly available dataset for federated search reflecting a real web environment has long been absent, making it difficult for researchers to test the validity of their federated search algorithms for the web setting. We present several experiments and analyses on resource selection on the web using a recently released test collection containing the results from more than a hundred real search engines, ranging from large general web search engines such as Google, Bing and Yahoo to small domain-specific engines. First, we experiment with estimating the size of uncooperative search engines on…
Since its emergence in the 1990s the World Wide Web (WWW) has rapidly evolved into a huge mine of global information and it is growing in size everyday. The presence of huge amount of resources on the Web thus poses a serious problem of accurate search. This is mainly because today's Web is a human-readable Web where information cannot be easily processed by machine. Highly sophisticated, efficient keyword based search engines that have evolved today have not been able to bridge this gap. So comes up the concept of the Semantic Web which is envisioned by Tim Berners-Lee as the Web of machine i…
Web search engines are frequently used to access information about products. This has increased in recent times with the rising popularity of e-commerce. However, there is limited understanding of what users search for and their intents when it comes to product search on the web. In this work, we study search logs from Bing web search engine to characterize user intents and study user behavior for product search. We propose a taxonomy of product intents by analyzing product search queries. This is a challenging task given that only 15%-17% of web search queries are about products. We train mac…
We present a simple web search engine for indexing and searching html documents using python programming language. Because python is well known for its simple syntax and strong support for main operating systems, we hope it will be beneficial for learning information retrieval techniques, especially web search engine technology.
Web search engines apply a variety of ranking signals to achieve user satisfaction, i.e., results pages that provide the best-possible results to the user. While these ranking signals implicitly consider credibility (e.g., by measuring popularity), explicit measures of credibility are not applied. In this chapter, credibility in Web search engines is discussed in a broad context: credibility as a measure for including documents in a search engine's index, credibility as a ranking signal, credibility in the context of universal search results, and the possibility of using credibility as an expl…
Introduction: Before embarking on the design of any computer system it is first necessary to assess the magnitude of the problem. In the case of a web search engine this assessment amounts to determining the current size of the web, the growth rate of the web, and the quantity of computing resource necessary to search it, and projecting the historical growth of this into the future. Method: The over 20 year history of the web makes it possible to make short-term projections on future growth. The longer history of hard disk drives (and smart phone memory card) makes it possible to make short-te…
Considering today's web scenario, there is a need of effective and meaningful search over the web which is provided by Semantic Web. Existing search engines are keyword based. They are vulnerable in answering intelligent queries from the user due to the dependence of their results on information available in web pages. While semantic search engines provides efficient and relevant results as the semantic web is an extension of the current web in which information is given well defined meaning. MetaCrawler is a search tool that uses several existing search engines and provides combined results b…
Searching health information on web has become an integral part of today's world, and many people turn to the Web for healthcare information and healthcare assessment. Our pilot study investigates users' preferences for the type of search results (image, news, video, etc.), and investigates users' ability to accurately interpret online health information for the purpose of self diagnosis. The preliminary results reveal that blog and news articles are most sought by users when searching online information and there exist challenges in the use of online health information for self-diagnosis.
Crawler-based search engines are the mostly used search engines among web and Internet users, involve web crawling, storing in database, ranking, indexing and displaying to the user. But it is noteworthy that because of increasing changes in web sites search engines suffer high time and transfers costs which are consumed to investigate the existence of each page in database while crawling, updating database and even investigating its existence in any crawling operations. "Exclusive Web Crawler" proposes guidelines for crawling features, links, media and other elements and to store crawling res…
In this world, globalization has become a basic and most popular human trend. To globalize information, people are going to publish the documents in the internet. As a result, information volume of internet has become huge. To handle that huge volume of information, Web searcher uses search engines. The Webpage indexing mechanism of a search engine plays a big role to retrieve Web search results in a faster way from the huge volume of Web resources. Web researchers have introduced various types of Web-page indexing mechanism to retrieve Webpages from Webpage repository. In this paper, we have …
Personalization is important for search engines to improve user experience. Most of the existing work do pure feature engineering and extract a lot of session-style features and then train a ranking model. Here we proposed a novel way to model both long term and short term user behavior using Multi-armed bandit algorithm. Our algorithm can generalize session information across users well, and as an Explore-Exploit style algorithm, it can generalize to new urls and new users well. Experiments show that our algorithm can improve performance over the default ranking and outperforms several popula…
Due to the increasing storage data on Web Applications, it becomes very difficult to use only keyword-based searches to provide comprehensive search results, thus increasing the difficulty for web users to search information on the web. In this paper, we proposed using a combined method of keyword-based and Regular expressions (regEx) searches to perform a search using strings of targeted items for optimal results even as the volume of data around the world on the Internet continues to explode. The idea is to embed regEx patterns as part of the search engine's algorithm in a web application pr…
Clustering of web search result document has emerged as a promising tool for improving retrieval performance of an Information Retrieval (IR) system. Search results often plagued by problems like synonymy, polysemy, high volume etc. Clustering other than resolving these problems also provides the user the easiness to locate his/her desired information. In this paper, a method, called WSRDC-CSCC, is introduced to cluster web search result using cuckoo search meta-heuristic method and Consensus clustering. Cuckoo search provides a solid foundation for consensus clustering. As a local clustering …
Today World Wide Web (WWW) has become a huge ocean of information and it is growing in size everyday. Downloading even a fraction of this mammoth data is like sailing through a huge ocean and it is a challenging task indeed. In order to download a large portion of data from WWW, it has become absolutely essential to make the crawling process parallel. In this paper we offer the architecture of a dynamic parallel Web crawler, christened as "WEB-SAILOR," which presents a scalable approach based on Client-Server model to speed up the download process on behalf of a Web Search Engine in a distribu…
Consumption of antimicrobial drugs, such as antibiotics, is linked with antimicrobial resistance. Surveillance of antimicrobial drug consumption is therefore an important element in dealing with antimicrobial resistance. Many countries lack sufficient surveillance systems. Usage of web mined data therefore has the potential to improve current surveillance methods. To this end, we study how well antimicrobial drug consumption can be predicted based on web search queries, compared to historical purchase data of antimicrobial drugs. We present two prediction models (linear Elastic Net, and non-li…
Searcher struggle is important feedback to Web search engines. Existing Web search struggle detection methods rely on effort-based features to identify the struggling moments. Their underlying assumption is that the more effort a user spends, the more struggling the user may be. However, recent studies have suggested this simple association might be incorrect. This paper proposes a new feature modulation method for struggle detection and refers to the reversal theory in psychology. The reversal theory (RT) points out that instead of having a static personality trait, people constantly switch b…
Engineering a Web search engine offering effective and efficient information retrieval is a challenging task. This document presents our experiences from designing and developing a Web search engine offering a wide spectrum of functionalities and we report some interesting experimental results. A rather peculiar design choice of the engine is that its index is based on a DBMS, while some of the distinctive functionalities that are offered include advanced Greek language stemming, real time result clustering, and advanced link analysis techniques (also for spam page detection).
The WWW is the most important source of information. But, there is no guarantee for information correctness and lots of conflicting information is retrieved by the search engines and the quality of provided information also varies from low quality to high quality. We provide enhanced trustworthiness in both specific (entity) and broad (content) queries in web searching. The filtering of trustworthiness is based on 5 factors: Provenance, Authority, Age, Popularity, and Related Links. The trustworthiness is calculated based on these 5 factors and it is stored thereby increasing the performance i…
The Web is a potentially huge source of medical drug leads. But despite the significant amount of multi- dimensional information about drugs, currently commercial search engines accept only linear keyword strings as inputs. This work uses linearized fragments of molecular structures as knowledge representation units to serve as inputs to search engines. It is shown that quite arbitrary fragments are surprisingly free of ambiguity, obtaining relatively small result sets, which are both manageable and rich in novel potential drug leads.
The explosion of information constrains the judgement of search terms associated with Knowledge-Based Web Ecosystem (KBWE), making the retrieval of relevant information and its knowledge management challenging. The existing information retrieval (IR) tools and their fusion in a framework need attention, in which search results can effectively be managed. In this article, we demonstrate the effective use of information retrieval services by a variety of users and agents in various KBWE scenarios. An innovative Integrated Search Framework (ISF) is proposed, which utilises crawling strategies, we…
