We consider the future causal boundary as a tool to find obstructions to conformal extensions, the latter being a slight generalization to conformal compactifications.
We give results about the L^2 kernel and the spectrum of the Dirac operator on a complete Riemannian manifold which is conformally equivalent to the interior of a Riemannian manifold with nonempty boundary.
We prove that a certain class of ALE spaces always has a Kahler conformal compactification, and moreover provide explicit formulas for the conformal factor and the Kahler potential of said compactification. We then apply this to give a new and simple construction of the canonical Bochner-Kähler metric on certain weighted projective spaces, and also to explicitly construct a family Kahler edge-cone metrics on $\mathbb{CP}^2$, with singular set $\mathbb{CP}^1$, having cone angles $2πβ$ for all $β>0$. We conclude by discussing how these results can be used to obtain certain well-known Einstein me…
In this paper we study the extent to which conformally compact asymptotically hyperbolic metrics may be characterized intrinsically. Building on the work of the first author, we prove that decay of sectional curvature to -1 and decay of covariant derivatives of curvature outside an appropriate compact set yield Hölder regularity for a conformal compactification of the metric. In the Einstein case, we prove that the estimate on the sectional curvature implies the control of all covariant derivatives of the Weyl tensor, permitting us to strengthen our result.
Any nonpositively curved symmetric space admits a topological compactification, namely the Hadamard compactification. For rank one spaces, this topological compactification can be endowed with a differentiable structure such that the action of the isometry group is differentiable. Moreover, the restriction of the action on the boundary leads to a flat model for some geometry (conformal, CR or quaternionic CR depending of the space). One can ask whether such a differentiable compactification exists for higher rank spaces, hopefully leading to some knew geometry to explore. In this paper we answ…
In this paper we pursue the work initiated in \cite{Bahuaud, BahuaudGicquaud}: study the extent to which conformally compact asymptotically hyperbolic metrics can be characterized intrinsically. We show how the decay rate of the sectional curvature to -1 controls the Hölder regularity of the compactified metric. To this end, we construct harmonic coordinates that satisfy some Neumann-type condition at infinity. Combined with a new integration argument, this permits us to recover to a large extent our previous result without any decay assumption on the covariant derivatives of the Riemann tenso…
We construct several examples of compactifications of Einstein metrics. We show that the Eguchi--Hanson instanton admits a projective compactification which is non--metric, and that a metric cone over any (pseudo)--Riemannian manifolds admits a metric projective compactification. We construct a para--$c$--projective compactification of neutral signature Einstein metrics canonically defined on certain rank--$n$ affine bundles $M$ over $n$-dimensional manifolds endowed with projective structures.
The standard conformal compactification of Euclidean space is the round sphere. We use conformal geodesics to give an elementary proof that this is the only possible conformal compactification.
We study boundary regularity for conformally compact Einstein metrics in even dimensions by generalizing the ideas of Michael Anderson. Our method of approach is to view the vanishing of the Ambient Obstruction tensor as an nth order system of equations for the components of a compactification of the given metric. This, together with boundary conditions that the compactification is shown to satisfy provide enough information to apply classical boundary regularity results. These results then provide local and global versions of finite boundary regularity for the components of the compactificati…
We derive an integral inequality between the mean curvature and the scalar curvature of the boundary of any scalar flat conformal compactifications of Poincar{é}-Einstein manifolds. As a first consequence , we obtain a sharp lower bound for the first eigenvalue of the conformal half-Laplacian of the boundary of such manifolds. Secondly, a new upper bound for the renormalized volume is given in the four dimensional setting. Finally, some estimates on the first eigenvalues of Dirac operators are also deduced.
Let $(X^{n},g_+) $ $(n\geq 3)$ be a Poincaré-Einstein manifold which is $C^{3,α}$ conformally compact with conformal infinity $(\partial X, [\hat{g}])$. On the conformal compactification $(\overline{X}, \bar g=ρ^2g_+)$ via some boundary defining function $ρ$, there are two types of Yamabe constants: $Y(\overline{X},\partial X,[\bar g])$ and $Q(\overline{X},\partial X,[\bar g])$. (See definitions (\ref{def.type1}) and (\ref{def.type2})). In \cite{GH}, Gursky and Han gave an inequality between $Y(\overline{X},\partial X,[\bar g])$ and $Y(\partial X,[\hat{g}])$. In this paper, we first show that …
We study the classification of smooth toroidal compactifications of nonuniform ball quotients in the sense of Kodaira and Enriques. Moreover, several results concerning the Riemannian and complex algebraic geometry of these spaces are given. In particular we show that there are compact complex surfaces which admit Riemannian metrics of nonpositive curvature, but which do not admit Kähler metrics of nonpositive curvature. An infinite class of such examples arise as smooth toroidal compactifications of ball quotients.
We study the conformal geometry of timelike curves in the (1+2)-Einstein universe, the conformal compactification of Minkowski 3-space defined as the quotient of the null cone of $\mathbb{R}^{2,3}$ by the action by positive scalar multiplications. The purpose is to describe local and global conformal invariants of timelike curves and to address the question of existence and properties of closed trajectories for the conformal strain functional. Some relations between the conformal geometry of timelike curves and the geometry of knots and links in the 3-sphere are discussed.
A manifold $M$ is locally conformally Kahler (LCK) if it admits a Kahler covering with monodromy acting by holomorphic homotheties. Let $M$ be an LCK manifold admitting a holomorphic conformal flow of diffeomorphisms, lifted to a non-isometric homothetic flow on its covering. We show that $M$ admits an automorphic potential. This version was added 10 years after publication to correct some errors in the original.
In this paper we present some extensions of the celebrated finite point conformal compactification theorem of Huber \cite{Hu57} for complete open surfaces to general dimensions based on the n-Laplace equations in conformal geometry. We are able to conclude a domain in the round sphere has to be the sphere deleted finitely many points if it can be endowed with a complete conformal metric with the negative part of the smallest Ricci curvature satisfying some integrable conditions. Our proof is based on the strengthened version of the Arsove-Huber's type theorem on n-superharmonic functions in ou…
We classify the smallest finite volume complex hyperbolic surfaces with cusps which admit smooth toroidal compactifications and which are not birational to a bi-elliptic surface. Remarkably, there is only one such surface which appears to be the compactification of a Picard modular surface.
We show that C^2 conformally compact Riemannian Einstein metrics have conformal compactifications that are smooth up to the boundary in dimension 3 and all even dimensions, and polyhomogeneous in odd dimensions greater than 3.
Moitvated in part by [3], in this note we obtain a rigidity result for globally hyperbolic vacuum spacetimes in arbitrary dimension that admit a timelike conformal Killing vector field. Specifically, we show that if M is a Ricci flat, timelike geodesically complete spacetime with compact Cauchy surfaces that admits a timelike conformal Killing field X, then M must split as a metric product, and X must be Killing. This gives a partial proof of the Bartnik splitting conjecture in the vacuum setting.
It is known that the hyperbolic plane admits a countable infinity of compactifications into a closed disk such that the isometric action of SL(2;R) acts analytically on the compactified space. We prove that among those compactifications, only the two most classical ones (namely the closures of Poincaré's disk and Klein's disk) are algebraic, that is to say obtained as a union of orbits of a projectivized linear representation of SL(2;R). More generally, we classify all algebraic actions of SL(2;R) on surfaces.
We re-visit the eigenvalue estimate of the Dirac operator on spin manifolds with boundary in terms of the first eigenvalues of conformal Laplace operator as well as the conformal mean curvature operator. These problems were studied earlier by Hijazi-Montiel-Zhang and Raulot and we re-prove them under weaker assumption that a boundary chirality operator exists. Moreover, on these spin manifolds with boundary, we show that any $C^{3,α}$ conformal compactification of some Poincare-Einstein metric must be the standard hemisphere when the first nonzero eigenvalue of the Dirac operator achieves its …
In this note we prove that a generic Riemannian manifold of dimension $\geq 3$ does not admit any nontrivial local conformal diffeomorphisms. This is a conformal analog of a result of Sunada concerning local isometries, and makes precise the principle that generic manifolds in high dimensions do not have conformal symmetries. Consequently, generic manifolds of dimension $\geq 3$ do not admit nontrivial conformal Killing vector fields near any point. As an application to the inverse problem of Calderón on manifolds, this implies that generic manifolds of dimension $\geq 3$ do not admit limiting…
In this paper, we generalize Huber's finite point conformal compactification theorem to a higher dimensional manifold, which is conformally compact with $L^\frac{n}{2}$ integrable Ricci curvatures.
This paper belongs to the realm of conformal geometry and deals with Euclidean submanifolds that admit smooth variations that are infinitesimally conformal. Conformal variations of Euclidean submanifolds is a classical subject in differential geometry. In fact, already in 1917 Cartan classified parametrically the Euclidean hypersurfaces that admit nontrivial conformal variations. Our first main result is a Fundamental theorem for conformal infinitesimal variations. The second is a rigidity theorem for Euclidean submanifolds that lie in low codimension.
We consider the problem of extending a conformal metric of negative curvature, given outside a neighbourhood of 0 in the unit disk $\DD$, to a conformal metric of negative curvature in $\DD$. We give conditions under which such an extension is possible, and also give obstructions to such an extension. The methods we use are based on a maximum principle and the Ahlfors--Schwarz Lemma. We apply these considerations to compactification of Riemann surfaces.
We show that every bounded domain $D$ in $\mathbb R^n$ with smooth $p$-convex boundary for $2\le p < n$ admits a smooth defining function $ρ$ which is $p$-plurisubharmonic on $\overline D$; if in addition $bD$ has no $p$-flat points then $ρ$ can be chosen strongly $p$-plurisubharmonic on $D$. If $bD$ is $2$-convex then for any open connected conformal surface $M$ and conformal harmonic map $f:M\to \overline D$, either $f(M)\subset D$ or $f(M)\subset bD$. In particular, every conformal harmonic map $\mathbb D^*\to D$ from the punctured disc extends to a conformal harmonic map $\mathbb D\to D$.
We compactify the classical moduli variety of compact Riemann surfaces by attaching moduli of (metrized) graphs as boundary. The compactifications do not admit the structure of varieties and patch together to form a big connected moduli space in which $\sqcup_{g} M_{g}$ is open dense. The metrized graphs, which are often studied as "tropical curves", are obtained as Gromov-Hausdorff collapse by fixing diameters of the hyperbolic metrics of the Riemann surfaces. This phenomenon can be also seen as an archemidean analogue of the tropicalization of Berkovich analytification of $M_{g}$ (cf., [ACP]…
Three-dimensional smooth, compact toric varieties (SCTV), when viewed as real six-dimensional manifolds, can admit G-structures rendering them suitable for internal manifolds in supersymmetric flux compactifications. We develop techniques which allow us to systematically construct G-structures on SCTV and read off their torsion classes. We illustrate our methods with explicit examples, one of which consists of an infinite class of toric CP^1 bundles. We give a self-contained review of the relevant concepts from toric geometry, in particular the subject of the classification of SCTV in dimensio…
