We consider the problem of extending a conformal metric of negative curvature, given outside a neighbourhood of 0 in the unit disk $\DD$, to a conformal metric of negative curvature in $\DD$. We give conditions under which such an extension is possible, and also give obstructions to such an extension. The methods we use are based on a maximum principle and the Ahlfors--Schwarz Lemma. We apply these considerations to compactification of Riemann surfaces.
An identity of conformal-projective curvature tensor of a statistical manifold is studied in this paper. The relation between the constancy of curvature and conformal-projective flatness of statistical manifolds is also discussed.
We prove the existence and uniqueness of graphs with prescribed mean curvature function in a large class of Riemannian manifolds which comprises spaces endowed with a conformal Killing vector field.
In this paper we give bounds for the first eigenvalue of the conformal Laplacian and the Yamabe invariant of a compact Riemannian manifold, by using conditions on the Ricci curvature and the diameter and deduce certain conditions on the manifold to be conformal to a sphere.
We give a classification for connected complete locally irreducible Riemannian manifolds with nonpositive curvature operator, which admit a nonzero closed or co-closed conformal Killing $L^{2}-$form. Moreover, we prove vanishing theorems for closed and co-closed conformal Killing $L^{2}-$forms on some complete Riemannian manifolds.
The conformal Codazzi structure is an intrinsic geometric structure on strictly convex hypersufaces in a locally flat projective manifold. We construct the GJMS operators and the Q-curvature for conformal Codazzi structures by using the ambient metric. We relate the total Q-curvature to the logarithmic coefficient in the volume expansion of the Blaschke metric, and derive the first and second variation formulas for a deformation of strictly convex domains.
This paper defines two new extrinsic curvature quantities on the corner of a four-dimensional Riemannian manifold with corner. One of these is a pointwise conformal invariant, and the conformal transformation of the other is governed by a new linear second-order pointwise conformally invariant partial differential operator. The Gauss-Bonnet theorem is then stated in terms of these quantities.
We prove the existence of (branched) conformal immersions F: S^2 -> R^3 with mean curvature H > 0 arbitrarily prescribed up to a 3-dimensional affine indeterminacy. A similar result is proved for the space forms S^3, H^3 and partial results for surfaces of higher genus.
We consider the conformal class of the Riemannian product $g_0 + g$, where $g_0$ is the constant curvature metric on $S^m$ and $g$ is a metric of constant scalar curvature on some closed manifold. We show that the number of metrics of constant scalar curvature in the conformal class grows at least linearly with respect to the square root of the scalar curvature of $g$. This is obtained by studying radial solutions of the equation $Δu -λu + λu^p =0$ on $S^m$, and the number of solutions in terms of $λ$.
The aim of this paper is to introduce a notion of mean curvature flow soliton general enough to encompass target spaces of constant sectional curvature, Riemannian products or, in increasing generality, warped product spaces.
In this article, we found a connection between Brown-York mass and the first Dirichlet Eigenvalue of a Schrödingier type operator. In particular, we proved a local positive mass type theorem for metrics conformal to the background one with suitable presumptions. As applications, we investigated compactly conformal deformations which either increase or decrease scalar curvature. We found local conformal rigidity phenomena occur in both cases for small domains and as for manifolds with nonpositive scalar curvature it is even more rigid in particular. On the other hand, such deformations exist fo…
Let $(M, \bar g)$ be an $n$-dimensional complete Riemannian manifold. In this paper, we considers the following conformal scalar curvature rigidity problem: Given a compact smooth domain $Ω$ with $\partial Ω$, can one find a conformal metric $g$ whose scalar curvature $R[g]\ge R[\bar g]$ on $Ω$ and the mean curvature $H[g] \ge H[ \bar g]$ on $\partial Ω$ with $\bar g = g$ on $\partial Ω$? We prove that $\bar g = g$ on some smooth domains in a general Riemannian manifold, which is an extension of the previous results given by Qing and Yuan, and Hang and Wang.
We study conformal invariants that arise from functions in the nullspace of conformally covariant differential operators. The invariants include nodal sets and the topology of nodal domains of eigenfunctions in the kernel of GJMS operators. We establish that on any manifold of dimension $n\geq 3$, there exist many metrics for which our invariants are nontrivial. We discuss new applications to curvature prescription problems.
Motivated by recent progress on a spinorial analogue of the Yamabe problem in the geometric literature, we study a conformally invariant spinor field equation on the $m$-sphere, $m\geq2$. Via variational methods and the spinorial Weierstraß representation, we study the problem of prescribing mean curvature for the immersion $S^2\to\mathbb{R}^3$.
In this work, we consider sequence of metrics with almost non-negative scalar curvature on torus. We show that if the sequence is uniformly conformal to another sequence of metrics with uniformly controlled geometry, then it converges to a flat metric in the volume preserving intrinsic flat sense, $L^{p}$ sense and the measured Gromov-Hausdorff sense.
Our principal goal is to study the Prescribed Curvature Tensor problem in locally conformally flat manifolds. The solution to this problem is given explicitly for the special cases of the tensor R, including a case where the metric g is complete on Rn. Similar problems are considered for locally conformally flat manifolds. As applications of these results we exhibit explicit examples of metrics g, conformal to g they are solutions for this problem.
We give a geometric derivation of Branson's Q-curvature in terms of the ambient metric associated with conformal structures; it naturally follows from the ambient metric construction of conformally invariant operators and can be applied to a large class of invariant operators. This procedure can be also applied to CR geometry and gives a CR analog of the Q-curvature; it then turns out that the Q-curvature gives the coefficient of the logarithmic singularity of the Szego kernel of 3-dimensional CR manifolds.
Let (M, g) be a closed Riemannian manifold and gE the Euclidean metric. We show that for m > 1, (M x R^m, (g + gE)) is not conformal to a positive Einstein manifold. Moreover, (M x R^m, (g + gE)) is not conformal to a Riemannian manifold of positive Ricci curvature, through a smooth, radial, positive, integrable function of R^m, for m > 1. These results are motivated by some recent questions on Yamabe constants.
Geometry of conformal minimal two-spheres immersed in $G(2,6;\mathbb{R})$ is studied in this paper by harmonic maps. We construct a non-homogeneous constant curved minimal two-sphere in $G(2,6;\mathbb{R})$, and give a classification theorem of linearly full conformal minimal immersions of constant curvature from $S^2$ to $G(2,6;\mathbb{R})$, or equivalently, a complex hyperquadric $Q_{4}$, which illustrates minimal two-spheres of constant curvature in $Q_{4}$ are in general not congruent.
Let $(M; g)$ be a smooth compact Riemiannian manifold without boundary and $g_{k}$ be a metric conformal to $g$. Suppose $vol(M; g_{k})+||R_{k}||_{L^{p}(M;g_{k})} < C$, where $R_{k}$ is the scalar curvature and $p > \frac{n}{2}$. We will use the 3-circle theorem and the John-Nirenberg inequality to study the bubble tree convergence of $g_{k}$.
We classify compact conformally flat $n$-dimensional manifolds with constant positive scalar curvature and satisfying an optimal integral pinching condition: they are covered isometrically by either $\mathbb{S}^{n}$ with the round metric, $\mathbb{S}^{1}\times \mathbb{S}^{n-1}$ with the product metric or $\mathbb{S}^{1}\times \mathbb{S}^{n-1}$ with a rotationally symmetric Derdziński metric.
A special case of the main result states that a complete $1$-connected Riemannian manifold $(M^n,g)$ is isometric to one of the models $\mathbb R^n$, $S^n(c)$, $\mathbb H^n(-c)$ of constant curvature if and only if every $p\in M^n$ is a non-degenerate maximum of a germ of smooth functions whose Riemannian gradient is a conformal vector field.
The largest class of Riemannian almost product manifolds, which is closed with respect to the group of the conformal transformations of the Riemannian metric, is the class of the conformal Riemannian P-manifolds. This class is an analogue of the class of the conformal Kähler manifolds in almost Hermitian geometry. The main aim of this work is to obtain properties of manifolds of this class with connections, whose curvature tensors have similar properties as the Kähler tensors in Hermitian geometry.
We generalized Xiang, Qi and Wei's results on the M-eigenvalues of Riemann curvature tensor to higher dimensional conformal flat manifolds. The expression of M-eigenvalues and M-eigenvectors are found in our paper. As a special case, M-eigenvalues of conformal flat Einstein manifold have also been discussed, and the conformal the invariance of M-eigentriple has been found. We also discussed the relationship between M-eigenvalue and sectional curvature of a Riemannian manifold. We proved that the M-eigenvalue can determine the Riemann curvature tensor uniquely and generalize the real M-eigenval…
We prove a Pohozaev type identity for non-linear eigenvalue equations of the Dirac operator on Riemannian spin manifolds with boundary. As an application, we obtain that the mean curvature H of a conformal immersion S^{n}-> R^{n+1} satisfies $\int \partial_X H=0$ where X is a conformal vector field on S^{n} and where the integration is carried out with respect to the Euclidean volume measure of the image.<BR> This identity is analogous to the Kazdan-Warner obstruction that appears in the problem of prescribing the scalar curvature on S^{n} inside the standard conformal class.
In this paper, we introduce and study the conformal mean curvature flow of submanifolds of higher codimension in the Euclidean space $\bbr^n$. This kind of flow is a special case of a general modified mean curvature flow which is of various origination. As the main result, we prove a blow-up theorem concluding that, under the conformal mean curvature flow in $\bbr^n$, the maximum of the square norm of the second fundamental form of any compact submanifold tends to infinity in finite time. Furthermore, by using the idea of Andrews and Baker for studying the mean curvature flow of submanifolds i…
A version of the singular Yamabe problem in bounded domains yields complete conformal metrics with negative constant scalar curvatures. In this paper, we study whether these metrics have negative Ricci curvatures. Affirmatively, we prove that these metrics indeed have negative Ricci curvatures in bounded convex domains in the Euclidean space. On the other hand, we provide a general construction of domains in compact manifolds and demonstrate that the negativity of Ricci curvatures does not hold if the boundary is close to certain sets of low dimension. The expansion of the Green's function and…
The various scalar curvatures on an almost Hermitian manifold are studied, in particular with respect to conformal variations. We show several integrability theorems, which state that two of these can only agree in the Kähler case. Our main question is the existence of almost Kähler metrics with conformally constant Chern scalar curvature. This problem is completely solved for ruled manifolds and in a complementary case where methods from the Chern-Yamabe problem are adapted to the non-integrable case. Also a moment map interpretation of the problem is given, leading to a Futaki invariant and …
We prove a regularity result for unit volume conformal metrics with integral scalar curvature bounds for $p>n/2$ and first eigenvalue of $Δ$ bounded from below by a constant $B > Λ_1(S^n,[g_{st.}]).$
There is a one-to-one correspondence between associated families of generic conformally flat (local-)hypersurfaces in 4-dimensional space forms and conformally flat 3-metrics with the Guichard condition. In this paper, we study the space of conformally flat 3-metrics with the Guichard condition: for a conformally flat 3-metric with the Guichard condition in the interior of the space, an evolution of orthogonal (local-) Riemannian $2$-metrics with constant Gauss curvature $-1$ is determined; for a $2$-metric belonging to a certain class of orthogonal analytic $2$-metrics with constant Gauss cur…
Building on previous results, we complete the classification of compact oriented Einstein 4-manifolds with det (W^+) > 0. There are, up to diffeomorphism, exactly 15 manifolds that carry such metrics, and, on each of these manifolds, such metrics sweep out exactly one connected component of the corresponding Einstein moduli space.
The conformal properties of complex Finsler metrics are studied. We give a characterization of a compact complex Finsler manifold to be globally conformal Kähler. The critical points of the total holomorphic curvature and total Ricci curvature in the volume preserved conformal classes are studied. The stability of critical Kähler Finsler metrics is obtained. A Yamabe type problem for mean Ricci curvature is considered.
We study sequences of conformal deformations of a smooth closed Riemannian manifold of dimension $n$, assuming uniform volume bounds and $L^{n/2}$ bounds on their scalar curvatures. Singularities may appear in the limit. Nevertheless, we show that under such bounds the underlying metric spaces are pre-compact in the Gromov-Hausdorff topology. Our study is based on the use of $A_\infty$-weights from harmonic analysis, and provides geometric controls on the limit spaces thus obtained. Our techniques also show that any conformal deformation of the Euclidean metric on $R^n$ with infinite volume an…
It has been known in that round spheres are the only closed homothetic self-similar solutions to the inverse mean curvature flow and parabolic curvature flows by degree -1 homogeneous functions of principle curvatures in the Euclidean space. In this article, we prove that the round sphere is rigid in much stronger sense, that under some natural conditions such as star-shapedness, it is the only closed solution to the inverse mean curavture flow and the above-mentioned flows in the Euclidean space which evolves by diffeomorphisms generated by conformal Killing fields.
In this paper we consider the conformal type (parabolicity or non-parabolicity) of complete ends of revolution immersed in simply connected space forms of constant sectional curvature. We show that any complete end of revolution in the $3$-dimensional Euclidean space or in the $3$-dimensional sphere is parabolic. In the case of ends of revolution in the hyperbolic $3$-dimensional space, we find sufficient conditions to attain parabolicity for complete ends of revolution using their relative position to the complete flat surfaces of revolution.
We study uniqueness of positive solutions to the conformal scalar curvature equation on complete Riemannian manifolds with constant negative scalar curvature. We apply the results to show that conformal transformations on certain complete Riemannian manifolds of constant negative scalar curvature are isometries. We also study uniqueness of complete positive solutions and radial solutions.
We look at several problems in even dimensional conformal geometry based around the de Rham complex. A leading and motivating problem is to find a conformally invariant replacement for the usual de Rham harmonics. An obviously related problem is to find, for each order of differential form bundle, a ``gauge'' operator which completes the exterior derivative to a system which is both elliptically coercive and conformally invariant. Treating these issues involves constructing a family of new operators which, on the one hand, generalise Branson's celebrated Q-curvature and, on the other hand, com…
In this paper, we study submanifolds with constant $r$th mean curvature $S_r$. We investigate, the stability of such submanifolds in the case when they are leaves of a codimension one foliation. We also generalize recent results by Barros - Sousa and Alías - Colares, concerning conformal fields, to an arbitrary manifold. Using this we show that normal component of a Killing field is a $r$th Jacobi field of a submanifold with $S_{r+1}$ constant. Finally, we study relations between $r$th Jacobi fields and vector fields preserving a foliation.
We show that on a compact Riemannian manifold with boundary there exists $u \in C^{\infty}(M)$ such that, $u_{|\partial M} \equiv 0$ and $u$ solves the $σ_k$-Ricci problem. In the case $k = n$ the metric has negative Ricci curvature. Furthermore, we show the existence of a complete conformally related metric on the interior solving the $σ_k$-Ricci problem. By adopting results of Mazzeo-Pacard, we show an interesting relationship between the complete metrics we construct and the existence of Poincaré-Einstein metrics. Finally we give a brief discussion of the corresponding questions in the case…
Given an smooth function $K <0$ we prove a result by Berger, Kazhdan and others that in every conformal class there exists a metric which attains this function as its Gaussian curvature for a compact Riemann surface of genus $g>1$. We do so by minimizing an appropriate functional using elementary analysis. In particular for $K$ a negative constant, this provides an elementary proof of the uniformization theorem for compact Riemann surfaces of genus $g >1$.
The aim of this paper is to introduce a cosymplectic analouge of conformal connection in a cosymplectic manifold and proved that if cosymplectic manifold M admits a cosymplectic conformal connection which is of zero curvature, then the Bochner curvature tensor of M vanishes.
In this paper we prove that under a lower bound on the Ricci curvature and an asymptotic assumption on the scalar curvature, a complete conformally compact manifold $(M^{n+1},g)$, with a pole $p$ and with the conformal infinity in the conformal class of the round sphere, has to be the hyperbolic space.
In this note we study the conformal metrics of constant $Q$ curvature on closed locally conformally flat manifolds. We prove that for a closed locally conformally flat manifold of dimension $n\geq 5$ and with Poincarë exponent less than $\frac {n-4}2$, the set of conformal metrics of positive constant $Q$ and positive scalar curvature is compact in the $C^\infty$ topology.
Let $(M^n,g)$ be an $n$-dimensional compact connected Riemannian manifold with smooth boundary. We show that the presence of a nontrivial conformal gradient vector field on $M$, with an appropriate control on the Ricci curvature makes $M$ to be isometric to a hemisphere of $\mathbb{S}^{n}$. We also prove that if an Einstein manifold admits nonzero conformal gradient vector field, then its scalar curvature is positive and it is isometric to a hemisphere of $\mathbb{S}^{n}$. Furthermore, we prove that if $ M $ admits a nontrivial conformal vector field and has constant scalar curvature, then the…
We define a formal Riemannian metric on a given conformal class of metrics on a closed Riemann surface. We show interesting formal properties for this metric, in particular the curvature is nonpositive and the Liouville energy is geodesically convex. The geodesic equation for this metric corresponds to a degenerate elliptic fully nonlinear PDE, and we prove that any two points are connected by a $C^{1,1}$ geodesic. Using this we can define a length space structure on the given conformal class. We present a different approach to the uniformization theorem by studying the negative gradient flow …
A $W^{1,p}$-metric on an $n$-dimensional closed Riemannian manifold naturally induces a distance function, provided $p$ is sufficiently close to $n$. If a sequence of metrics $g_k$ converges in $W^{1,p}$ to a limit metric $g$, then the corresponding distance functions $d_{g_k}$ subconverge to a limit distance function $d$, which satisfies $d\le d_g$. As an application, we show that the above convergence result applies to a sequence of conformal metrics with $L^{n/2}$-bounded scalar curvatures, under certain geometric assumptions. In particular, in this special setting, the limit distance funct…
We give sufficient conditions on a function invariant under the action of an isometry group to be Branson's Q-curvature of a metric in a given conformal class, using the conformal GJMS operators.
