We obtain necessary and sufficient conditions when a pseudocompact paratopological group is topological. (2-)pseudocompact and countably compact paratopological groups that are not topological are constructed. It is proved that each 2-pseudocompact paratopological group is pseudocompact and that each Hausdorff σ-compact pseudocompact paratopological group is a compact topological group. Our particular attention is devoted to periodic and topologically periodic pseudocompact paratopological groups.
We obtain many results and solve some problems about feebly compact paratopological groups. We obtain necessary and sufficient conditions for such a group to be topological. One of them is the quasiregularity. We prove that each $2$-pseudocompact paratopological group is feebly compact and that each Hausdorff $σ$-compact feebly compact paratopological group is a compact topological group. Our particular attention concerns periodic and topologically periodic groups. We construct examples of various compact-like paratopological groups which are not topological groups, among them a $T_0$ sequenti…
We mainly discuss the cardinal invariants and generalized metric properties on paratopological groups or rectifiable spaces, and show that: (1) If $A$ and $B$ are $ω$-narrow subsets of a paratopological group $G$, then $AB$ is $ω$-narrow in $G$, which give an affirmative answer for \cite[Open problem 5.1.9]{A2008}; (2) Every bisequential or weakly first-countable rectifiable space is metrizable; (3) The properties of Fr$\acute{e}$chet-Urysohn and strongly Fr$\acute{e}$chet-Urysohn are coincide in rectifiable spaces; (4) Every rectifiable space $G$ contains a (closed) copy of $S_ω$ if and only …
A Hausdorff paratopological group G is H-closed if G is closed in each Hausdorff paratopological group containing G. We obtain criteria of H-closedness for some classes of abelian paratopological groups. In particular, for topological groups.
A paratopological group $G$ is saturated if the inverse $U^{-1}$ of each non-empty set $U\subset G$ has non-empty interior. It is shown that a [first-countable] paratopological group $H$ is a closed subgroup of a saturated (totally bounded) [abelian] paratopological group if and only if $H$ admits a continuous bijective homomorphism onto a (totally bounded) [abelian] topological group $G$ [such that for each neighborhood $U\subset H$ of the unit $e$ there is a closed subset $F\subset G$ with $e\in h^{-1}(F)\subset U$]. As an application we construct a paratopological group whose character exce…
The concept of gyrogroups is a generalization of groups which do not explicitly have associativity. Recently, Atiponrat extended the idea of topological (paratopological) groups to topological (paratopological) gyrogroups. In this paper, we prove that every regular (Hausdorff) locally gyroscopic invariant paratopological gyrogroup $G$ is completely regular (function Hausdorff). These results improve theorems of Banakh and Ravsky for paratopological groups. Also, we extend the Pontrjagin conditions of (para)topological groups to (para)topological gyrogroups.
In the paper we investigate topological properties of a topological Brandt $λ^0$-extension $B^0_λ(S)$ of a semitopological monoid $S$ with zero. In particular we prove that for every Tychonoff pseudocompact (resp., Hausdorff countably compact, Hausdorff compact) semitopological monoid $S$ with zero there exists a unique semiregular pseudocompact (resp., Hausdorff countably compact, Hausdorff compact) extension $B^0_λ(S)$ of $S$ and establish theirs Stone-Čech and Bohr compactifications. We also describe a category whose objects are ingredients in the constructions of pseudocompact (resp., coun…
In this paper, we firstly construct a Hausdorff non-submetrizable paratopological group $G$ in which every point is a $G_δ$-set, which gives a negative answer to Arhangel'ski\vı\ and Tkachenko's question [Topological Groups and Related Structures, Atlantis Press and World Sci., 2008]. We prove that each first-countable Abelian paratopological group is submetrizable. Moreover, we discuss developable paratopological groups and construct a non-metrizable, Moore paratopological group. Further, we prove that a regular, countable, locally $k_ω$-paratopological group is a discrete topological group o…
In the paper we study pseudocompact primitive topological inverse semigroups. We describe the structure of pseudocompact primitive topological inverse semigroups and show that a Tychonoff product of a family of pseudocompact primitive topological inverse semigroups is a pseudocompact topological space. Also we prove that the Stone-Čech compactification of a pseudocompact primitive topological inverse semigroup is a compact primitive topological inverse semigroup.
In this paper, we mainly discuss some generalized metric properties and the character of the free paratopological groups, and extend several results valid for free topological groups to free paratopological groups.
Given a $T_0$ paratopological group $G$ and a class $\mathcal C$ of continuous homomorphisms of paratopological groups, we define the $\mathcal C$-$semicompletion$ $\mathcal C[G)$ and $\mathcal C$-$completion$ $\mathcal C[G]$ of the group $G$ that contain $G$ as a dense subgroup, satisfy the $T_0$-separation axiom and have certain universality properties. For special classes $\mathcal C$, we present some necessary and sufficient conditions on $G$ in order that the (semi)completions $\mathcal C[G)$ and $\mathcal C[G]$ be Hausdorff. Also, we give an example of a Hausdorff paratopological abelian…
We prove that a semiregular topological space $X$ is completely regular if and only if its topology is generated by a normal quasi-uniformity. This characterization implies that each regular paratopological group is completely regular. This resolves an old problem in the theory of paratopological groups, which stood open for about 60 years. Also we define a natural uniformity on each paratopological group and using this uniformity prove that each (first countable) Hausdorff paratopological group is functionally Hausdorff (and submetrizable). This resolves another two known open problems in the…
In the paper we study the preservation of pseudocompactness (resp., countable compactness, sequential compactness, $ω$-boundedness, totally countable compactness, countable pracompactness, sequential pseudocompactness) by Tychonoff products of pseudocompact (and countably compact) to\-pological Brandt $λ_i^0$-extensions of semitopological monoids with zero. In particular we show that if $\big\{ \big(B^0_{λ_i}(S_i),τ^0_{B(S_i)}\big) \colon i\in\mathscr{I}\big\}$ is a family of Hausdorff pseudocompact to\-pological Brandt $λ_i^0$-extensions of pseudocompact semitopological monoids with zero such…
A space $X$ is of countable type (resp. subcountable type) if every compact subspace $F$ of $X$ is contained in a compact subspace $K$ that is of countable character (resp. countable pseudocharacter) in $X$. In this paper, we mainly show that: (1) For a functionally Hausdorff space $X$, the free paratopological group $FP(X)$ and the free abelian paratopological group $AP(X)$ are of countable type if and only if $X$ is discrete; (2) For a functionally Hausdorff space $X$, if the free abelian paratopological group $AP(X)$ is of subcountable type then $X$ has countable pseudocharacter. Moreover, …
Let $FP(X)$ be the free paratopological group over a topological space $X$. For each non-negative integer $n\in\mathbb{N}$, denote by $FP_{n}(X)$ the subset of $FP(X)$ consisting of all words of reduced length at most $n$, and $i_{n}$ by the natural mapping from $(X\bigoplus X^{-1}\bigoplus\{e\})^{n}$ to $FP_{n}(X)$. In this paper, we mainly improve some results of A.S. Elfard and P. Nickolas's [On the topology of free paratopological groups. II, Topology Appl., 160(2013), 220--229.]. The main result is that the natural mapping $i_{2}: (X\bigoplus X_{d}^{-1}\bigoplus\{e\})^{2}\longrightarrow F…
A topological group is locally pseudocompact if it contains a non-empty open set with pseudocompact closure. In this note, we prove that if G is a group with the property that every closed subgroup of G is locally pseudocompact, then G_0 is dense in the component of the completion of G, and G/G_0 is zero-dimensional. We also provide examples of hereditarily disconnected pseudocompact groups with strong minimality properties of arbitrarily large dimension, and thus show that G/G_0 may fail to be zero-dimensional even for totally minimal pseudocompact groups.
The existence of a countably compact group without non-trivial convergent sequences in ZFC alone is a major open problem in topological group theory. We give a ZFC example of a Boolean topological group G without non-trivial convergent sequences having the following "selective" compactness property: For each free ultrafilter p on N and every sequence {U_n:n in N} of non-empty open subsets of G one can choose a point x_n in U_n for all n in such a way that the resulting sequence {x_n:n in N} has a p-limit in G, that is, {n in N: x_n in V} belongs to p for every neighbourhood V of x in G. In par…
We study algebraic and topological properties of topological semigroups containing a copy of the bicyclic semigroup C(p,q). We prove that each topological semigroup S with pseudocompact square contains no dense copy of C(p,q). On the other hand, we construct a (consistent) example of a pseudocompact (countably compact) Tychonov semigroup containing a copy of C(p,q).
A Hausdorff topological group G is minimal if every continuous isomorphism f: G --> H between G and a Hausdorff topological group H is open. Significantly strengthening a 1981 result of Stoyanov, we prove the following theorem: For every infinite minimal abelian group G there exists a sequence {σ_n : n\in N} of cardinals such that w(G) = sup {σ_n : n \in N} and sup {2^{σ_n} : n \in N} \leq |G| \leq 2^{w(G)}, where w(G) is the weight of G. If G is an infinite minimal abelian group, then either |G| = 2^σfor some cardinal σ, or w(G) = min {σ: |G| \leq 2^σ}; moreover, the equality |G| = 2^{w(G)} h…
Two non-discrete Hausdorff group topologies $τ, δ$ on a group $G$ are called {\it transversal} if the least upper bound $τ\vee δ$ of $τ$ and $δ$ is the discrete topology. In this paper, we discuss the existence of transversal group topologies on locally pseudocompact, locally precompact or locally compact groups. We prove that each locally pseudocompact, connected topological group satisfies CSP, which gives an affirmative answer to a problem posed by Dikranjan, Tkachenko and Yaschenko in 2006. For a compact normal subgroup $K$ of a locally compact totally disconnected group $G$, if $G$ admits…
We prove that many completeness properties coincide in metric spaces, precompact groups and dense subgroups of products of separable metric groups. We apply these results to function spaces C_p(X,G) of G-valued continuous functions on a space X with the topology of pointwise convergence, for a separable metric group G. Not only the results but also the proofs themselves are novel even in the classical case when G is the real line. A space X is weakly pseudocompact if it is G_delta-dense in at least one of its compactifications. A topological group G is precompact if it is topologically isomorp…
The note contains a few results related to separation axioms and automatic continuity of operations in compact-like semitopological groups. In particular, is presented a semiregular semitopological group $G$ which is not $T_3$. We show that each weakly semiregular compact semitopological group is a topological group. On the other hand, constructed examples of quasiregular $T_1$ compact and $T_2$ sequentially compact quasitopological groups, which are not paratopological groups. Also we prove that a semitopological group $(G,τ)$ is a topological group provided there exists a Hausdorff topology …
A topological space is called {\it dense-separable} if each dense subset of its is separable. Therefore, each dense-separable space is separable. We establish some basic properties of dense-separable topological groups. We prove that each separable space with a countable tightness is dense-separable, and give a dense-separable topological group which is not hereditarily separable. We also prove that, for a Hausdorff locally compact group , it is locally dense-separable iff it is metrizable. Moreover, we study dense-subgroup-separable topological groups. We prove that, for each compact torsion …
In this paper, we find at the properties of the family lambda which imply that the function space C(X,R^alpha) with the lambda-open topology is a semitopological group (paratopological group, topological group, topological vector space and other algebraic structures) under the usual operations of addition and multiplication (and multiplication by scalars).
We detect topological semigroups that are topological paragroups, i.e., are isomorphic to a Rees product of a topological group over topological spaces with a continuous sandwich function. We prove that a simple topological semigroup $S$ is a topological paragroup if one of the following conditions is satisfied: (1) $S$ is completely simple and the maximal subgroups of $S$ are topological groups, (2) $S$ contains an idempotent and the square $S\times S$ is countably compact or pseudocompact, (3) $S$ is sequentially compact or each power of $S$ is countably compact. The last item generalizes an…
We prove that the semigroup operation of a topological semigroup $S$ extends to a continuous semigroup operation on its the Stone-Čech compactification $βS$ provided $S$ is a pseudocompact openly factorizable space, which means that each map $f:S\to Y$ to a second countable space $Y$ can be written as the composition $f=g\circ p$ of an open map $p:X\to Z$ onto a second countable space $Z$ and a map $g:Z\to Y$. We present a spectral characterization of openly factorizable spaces and establish some properties of such spaces.
We denote by C_p(X,G) the group of all continuous functions from a space X to a topological group G endowed with the topology of pointwise convergence. We say that spaces X and Y are G-equivalent provided that the topological groups C_p(X,G) and C_p(Y,G) are topologically isomorphic. We investigate which topological properties are preserved by G-equivalence, with a special emphasis being placed on characterizing topological properties of X in terms of those of C_p(X,G). Since R-equivalence coincides with l-equivalence, this line of research "includes" major topics of the classical C_p-theory o…
A topological group $X$ is defined to have $compact$ $exponent$ if for some number $n\in\mathbb N$ the set $\{x^n:x\in X\}$ has compact closure in $X$. Any such number $n$ will be called a compact exponent of $X$. Our principal result states that a complete Abelian topological group $X$ has compact exponent (equal to $n\in\mathbb N$) if and only if for any injective continuous homomorphism $f:X\to Y$ to a topological group $Y$ and every $y\in \bar{f(X)}$ there exists a positive number $k$ (equal to $n$) such that $y^k\in f(X)$. This result has many interesting implications: (1) an Abelian topo…
For a compact Hausdorff abelian group K and its subgroup H, one defines the g-closure g(H) of H in K as the subgroup consisting of $χ\in K$ such that $χ(a_n)\longrightarrow 0$ in T=R/Z for every sequence {a_n} in $\hat K$ (the Pontryagin dual of K) that converges to 0 in the topology that H induces on $\hat K$. We prove that every countable subgroup of a compact Hausdorff group is g-closed, and thus give a positive answer to two problems of Dikranjan, Milan and Tonolo. We also show that every g-closed subgroup of a compact Hausdorff group is realcompact. The techniques developed in the paper a…
We present a wide class of reflexive, precompact, non-compact, Abelian topological groups $G$ determined by three requirements. They must have the Baire property, satisfy the \textit{open refinement condition}, and contain no infinite compact subsets. This combination of properties guarantees that all compact subsets of the dual group $G^\wedge$ are finite. We also show that many (non-reflexive) precompact Abelian groups are quotients of reflexive precompact Abelian groups. This includes all precompact almost metrizable groups with the Baire property and their products. Finally, given a compac…
