Balas introduced disjunctive cuts in the 1970s for mixed-integer linear programs. Several recent papers have attempted to extend this work to mixed-integer conic programs. In this paper we study the structure of the convex hull of a two-term disjunction applied to the second-order cone, and develop a methodology to derive closed-form expressions for convex inequalities describing the resulting convex hull. Our approach is based on first characterizing the structure of undominated valid linear inequalities for the disjunction and then using conic duality to derive a family of convex, possibly nonlinear, valid inequalities that correspond to these linear inequalities. We identify and study the cases where these valid inequalities can equivalently be expressed in conic quadratic form and where a single inequality from this family is sufficient to describe the convex hull. In particular, our results on two-term disjunctions on the second-order cone generalize related results on split cuts by Modaresi, Kilinc, and Vielma, and by Andersen and Jensen.
Jeroslow and Lowe gave an exact geometric characterization of subsets of $\mathbb{R}^n$ that are projections of mixed-integer linear sets, a.k.a MILP-representable sets. We give an alternate algebraic characterization by showing that a set is MILP-representable {\em if and only if} the set can be described as the intersection of finitely many {\em affine Chvátal inequalities}. These inequalities are a modification of a concept introduced by Blair and Jeroslow. This gives a sequential variable elimination scheme that, when applied to the MILP representation of a set, explicitly gives the affine…
A recent series of papers has examined the extension of disjunctive-programming techniques to mixed-integer second-order-cone programming. For example, it has been shown---by several authors using different techniques---that the convex hull of the intersection of an ellipsoid, $E$, and a split disjunction, $(l - x_j)(x_j - u) \le 0$ with $l < u$, equals the intersection of $E$ with an additional second-order-cone representable (SOCr) set. In this paper, we study more general intersections of the form $K \cap Q$ and $K \cap Q \cap H$, where $K$ is a SOCr cone, $Q$ is a nonconvex cone defined by…
The proximal, regular and limiting normal cones to the second-order cone complementarity set play important roles in studying mathematical programs with second-order cone complementarity constraints, second-order cone programs, and the second-order cone complementarity problems. It is needed in the first-order optimality conditions for mathematical programs with second-order cone complementarity constraint, the second-order subdifferential criteria in characterizing the full stability for second-order cone programs and second-order cone complementarity problems, as well as in the characterizin…
In this paper, we describe the structural properties of the cone of $\mathcal{Z}$-transformations on the second order cone in terms of the semidefinite cone and copositive/completely positive cones induced by the second order cone and its boundary. In particular, we describe its dual as a slice of the semidefinite cone as well as a slice of the completely positive cone of the second order cone. This provides an example of an instance where a conic linear program on a completely positive cone is reduced to a problem on the semidefinite cone.
The second-order cone plays an important role in convex optimization and has strong expressive abilities despite its apparent simplicity. Second-order cone formulations can also be solved more efficiently than semidefinite programming in general. We consider the following question, posed by Lewis and Glineur, Parrilo, Saunderson: is it possible to express the general positive semidefinite cone using second-order cones? We provide a negative answer to this question and show that the 3x3 positive semidefinite cone does not admit any second-order cone representation. Our proof relies on exhibitin…
The second-order cone is a class of simple convex cones and optimizing over them can be done more efficiently than with semidefinite programming. It is interesting both in theory and in practice to investigate which convex cones admit a representation using second-order cones, given that they have a strong expressive ability. In this paper, we prove constructively that the cone of sums of nonnegative circuits (SONC) admits a second-order cone representation. Based on this, we give a new algorithm to compute SONC decompositions for certain classes of nonnegative polynomials via second-order con…
The $\mathcal{S}$-cone provides a common framework for cones of polynomials or exponential sums which establish non-negativity upon the arithmetic-geometric inequality, in particular for sums of non-negative circuit polynomials (SONC) or sums of arithmetic-geometric exponentials (SAGE). In this paper, we study the $\mathcal{S}$-cone and its dual from the viewpoint of second-order representability. Extending results of Averkov and of Wang and Magron on the primal SONC cone, we provide explicit generalized second-order descriptions for rational $\mathcal{S}$-cones and theirs duals.
This paper introduces the monotone extended second-order cone (MESOC), which is related to the monotone cone and the second-order cone. Some properties of the MESOC are presented and its dual cone is computed. Projecting onto the MESOC is reduced to the pool-adjacent-violators algorithm (PAVA) of isotonic regression. An application of MESOC to portfolio optimisation is provided. Some broad descriptions of possible MESOC-regression models are also outlined.

The Lyapunov rank of extended second order cones. Journal of Global Optimization, 66(3):585-593, 2016] determined the automorphism groups and the Lyapunov or bilinearity ranks of these cones. S. Z. The second-order tangent set is an important concept in describing the curvature of the set involved. Due to the existence of the complementarity condition, the second-order cone (SOC) complementarity set is a nonconvex set. Moreover, unlike the vector complementarity set, the SOC complementarity set is not even the union of finitely many polyhedral convex sets. Despite these difficulties, we succeed in showing that like the vector complementarity set, the SOC complementarity set is second-order directionally differentiable and an exact formula for the second-order tangent set of the SOC compl…
The paper conducts a second-order variational analysis for an important class of nonpolyhedral conic programs generated by the so-called second-order/Lorentz/ice-cream cone $Q$. From one hand, we prove that the indicator function of $Q$ is always twice epi-differentiable and apply this result to characterizing the uniqueness of Lagrange multipliers at stationary points together with an error bound estimate in the general second-order cone setting involving ${\cal C}^2$-smooth data. On the other hand, we precisely calculate the graphical derivative of the normal cone mapping to $Q$ under the we…
In this paper, we study the linear complementarity problems on extended second order cones. We convert a linear complementarity problem on an extended second order cone into a mixed complementarity problem on the non-negative orthant. We state necessary and sufficient conditions for a point to be a solution of the converted problem. We also present solution strategies for this problem, such as the Newton method and Levenberg-Marquardt algorithm. Finally, we present some numerical examples.
Recently, Chubanov proposed an interesting new polynomial-time algorithm for linear program. In this paper, we extend his algorithm to second-order cone programming.
Second-order necessary optimality conditions for nonlinear conic programming problems that depend on a single Lagrange multiplier are usually built under nondegeneracy and strict complementarity. In this paper we establish a condition of such type for two classes of nonlinear conic problems, namely semidefinite and second-order cone programming, assuming Robinson's constraint qualification and a weak constant rank-type property which are, together, strictly weaker than nondegeneracy. Our approach is done via a penalty-based strategy, which is aimed at providing strong global convergence result…
In this paper, we study a new generalization of the Lorentz cone, called the Monotone Extended Second Order Cone (MESOC). We investigate basic properties of MESOC including computation of its Lyapunov rank and proving its reducibility. Moreover, we show that in an ambient space, a cylinder is an isotonic projection set with respect to MESOC. We also examine a Nonlinear Complementarity Problem on a cylinder, which is equivalent to a suitable Mixed Complementarity Problem and provide a computational example illustrating applicability of MESOC.
This paper is devoted to the study of tilt stability of local minimizers, which plays an important role in both theoretical and numerical aspects of optimization. This notion has been comprehensively investigated in the unconstrained framework as well as for problems of nonlinear programming with $C^2$-smooth data. Available results for nonpolyhedral conic programs were obtained only under strong constraint nondegeneracy assumptions. Here we develop an approach of second-order variational analysis, which allows us to establish complete neighborhood and pointbased characterizations of tilt stab…
In this paper a special semi-smooth equation associated to the second order cone is studied. It is shown that, under mild assumptions, the semi-smooth Newton method applied to this equation is well-defined and the generated sequence is globally and Q-linearly convergent to a solution. As an application, the obtained results are used to study the linear second order cone complementarity problem, with special emphasis on the particular case of positive definite matrices. Moreover, some computational experiments designed to investigate the practical viability of the method are presented.
This paper addresses the compliance minimization of a truss, where the number of available nodes is limited. It is shown that this optimization problem can be recast as a second-order cone programming with a cardinality constraint. We propose a simple heuristic based on the alternative direction method of multipliers. The efficiency of the proposed method is compared with a global optimization approach based on mixed-integer second-order cone programming. Numerical experiments demonstrate that the proposed method often finds a solution having a good objective value with small computational cos…
In this paper, we analyze optimal control problems governed by semilinear parabolic equations. Box constraints for the controls are imposed and the cost functional involves the state and possibly a sparsity-promoting term, but not a Tikhonov regularization term. Unlike finite dimensional optimization or control problems involving Tikhonov regularization, second order sufficient optimality conditions for the control problems we deal with must be imposed in a cone larger than the one used to obtain necessary conditions. Different extensions of this cone have been proposed in the literature for d…
A large number matrix optimization problems are described by orthogonally invariant norms. This paper is devoted to the study of variational analysis of the orthogonally invariant norm cone of symmetric matrices. For a general orthogonally invariant norm cone of symmetric matrices, formulas for the tangent cone, normal cone and second-order tangent set are established. The differentiability properties of the projection operator onto the orthogonally invariant norm cone are developed, including formulas for the directional derivative and the B-subdifferential. Importantly, the directional deriv…
In this paper, we define a new, special second order cone as a type-$k$ second order cone. We focus on the case of $k=2$, which can be viewed as SOCO with an additional {\em complicating variable}. For this new problem, we develop the necessary prerequisites, based on previous work for traditional SOCO. We then develop a primal-dual interior point algorithm for solving a type-2 second order conic optimization (SOCO) problem, based on a family of kernel functions suitable for this type-2 SOCO. We finally derive the following iteration bound for our framework: \[\frac{L^γ}{θκγ} \left[2N ψ\left( …
We maximize the production of biogas in a gradostat at steady state. The physical decision variables are the water, substrate, and biomass entering each tank and the flows through the interconnecting pipes. Our main technical focus is the nonconvex constraint describing microbial growth. We formulate a relaxation and prove that it is exact when the gradostat is outflow connected, its system matrix is irreducible, and the growth rate satisfies a simple condition. The relaxation has second-order cone representations for the Monod and Contois growth rates. We extend the steady state models to the…
The numerical performance of algorithms can be studied using test sets or procedures that generate such problems. This paper proposes various methods for generating linear, semidefinite, and second-order cone optimization problems. Specifically, we are interested in problem instances requiring a known optimal solution, a known optimal partition, a specific interior solution, or all these together. In the proposed problem generators, different characteristics of optimization problems, including dimension, size, condition number, degeneracy, optimal partition, and sparsity, can be chosen to faci…
In this paper, we consider the second-order cone tensor eigenvalue complementarity problem (SOCTEiCP) and present three different reformulations to the model under consideration. Specifically, for the general SOCTEiCP, we first show its equivalence to a particular variational inequality under reasonable conditions. A notable benefit is that such a reformulation possibly provides an efficient way for the study of properties of the problem. Then, for the symmetric and sub-symmetric SOCTEiCPs, we reformulate them as appropriate nonlinear programming problems, which are extremely beneficial for de…
In this paper, we present a method to determine if a lift-and-project cut for a mixed-integer linear program is irregular, in which case the cut is not equivalent to any intersection cut from the bases of the linear relaxation. This is an important question due to the intense research activity for the past decade on cuts from multiple rows of simplex tableau as well as on lift-and-project cuts from non-split disjunctions. While it is known since Balas and Perregaard (2003) that lift-and-project cuts from split disjunctions are always equivalent to intersection cuts and consequently to such mul…
The objective of this work is to study weak infeasibility in second order cone programming. For this purpose, we consider a relaxation sequence of feasibility problems that mostly preserve the feasibility status of the original problem. This is used to show that for a given weakly infeasible problem at most $m$ directions are needed to approach the cone, where $m$ is the number of Lorentz cones. We also tackle a closely related question and show that given a bounded optimization problem satisfying Slater's condition, we may transform it into another problem that has the same optimal value but …
In this paper, we study the stochastic linear complementarity problems on extended second order cones (stochastic ESOCLCP). We first convert the problem to a stochastic mixed complementarity problem on the nonegative orthant (SMixCP). Enlightened by the idea of Chen and Lin(2011), we introduce the Conditional Value-at-risk (CVaR) method to measure the loss of complementarity in the stochastic case. A CVaR - based minimisation problem is introduced to achieve a solution which is "good enough" for the complementarity requirement of the original SMixCP. Smoothing function and sample average appro…
It is well-known that the second-order cone can be outer-approximated to an arbitrary accuracy $ε$ by a polyhedral cone of compact size defined by irrational data. In this paper, we propose two rational polyhedral outer-approximations of compact size retaining the same guaranteed accuracy $ε$. The first outer-approximation has the same size as the optimal but irrational outer-approximation from the literature. In this case,we provide a practical approach to obtain such an approximation defined by the smallest integer coefficients possible, which requires solving a few, small-size integer quadr…
Among many approaches to increase the computational efficiency of semidefinite programming (SDP) relaxation for quadratic constrained quadratic programming problems (QCQPs), exploiting the aggregate sparsity of the data matrices in the SDP by Fukuda et al. (2001) and second-order cone programming (SOCP) relaxation have been popular. In this paper, we exploit the aggregate sparsity of SOCP relaxation of QCQPs. Specifically, we prove that exploiting the aggregate sparsity reduces the number of second-order cones in the SOCP relaxation, and that we can simplify the matrix completion procedure by …
The optimal control problem for the kinematic bicycle model is considered where the trajectories are required to satisfy the safety constraints in the continuous-time sense. Based on the differential flatness property of the model, necessary and sufficient conditions in the flat space are provided to guarantee safety in the state space. The optimal control problem is relaxed to the problem of solving three second-order cone programs (SOCPs) sequentially, which find the safe path, the trajectory duration, and the speed profile, respectively. Solutions of the three SOCPs together provide a sub-o…
The constant rank constraint qualification, introduced by Janin in 1984 for nonlinear programming, has been extensively used for sensitivity analysis, global convergence of first- and second-order algorithms, and for computing the derivative of the value function. In this paper we discuss naive extensions of constant rank-type constraint qualifications to second-order cone programming and semidefinite programming, which are based on the Approximate-Karush-Kuhn-Tucker necessary optimality condition and on the application of the reduction approach. Our definitions are strictly weaker than Robins…
The error bound property for a solution set defined by a set-valued mapping refers to an inequality that bounds the distance between vectors closed to a solution of the given set by a residual function. The error bound property is a Lipschitz-like/calmness property of the perturbed solution mapping, or equivalently the metric subregularity of the underlining set-valued mapping. It has been proved to be extremely useful in analyzing the convergence of many algorithms for solving optimization problems, as well as serving as a constraint qualification for optimality conditions. In this paper, we …
In [R. Andreani, G. Haeser, L. M. Mito, H. Ramírez C., Weak notions of nondegeneracy in nonlinear semidefinite programming, arXiv:2012.14810, 2020] the classical notion of nondegeneracy (or transversality) and Robinson's constraint qualification have been revisited in the context of nonlinear semidefinite programming exploiting the structure of the problem, namely, its eigendecomposition. This allows formulating the conditions equivalently in terms of (positive) linear independence of significantly smaller sets of vectors. In this paper we extend these ideas to the context of nonlinear second-…
Low levels of system inertia in power grids with significant penetration of non-synchronous Renewable Energy Sources (RES) have increased the risk of frequency instability. The provision of a certain type of ancillary services such as inertia and Frequency Response (FR) is needed at all times, to maintain system frequency within secure limits if the loss of a large power infeed were to occur. In this paper we propose a frequency-secured optimisation framework for the procurement of inertia and FR with diverse dynamics, which enables to apply a marginal-pricing scheme for these services. This p…
This paper studies siting and sizing of plug-in electric vehicle (PEV) fast-charging stations on coupled transportation and power networks. We develop a closed-form service rate model of highway PEV charging stations' service abilities, which considers heterogeneous PEV driving ranges and charging demands. We utilize a modified capacitated flow refueling location model (CFRLM) to explicitly capture time-varying PEV charging demands on the transportation network under driving range constraints. We explore extra constraints of the CFRLM to enhance model accuracy and computational efficiency. We th…
The well known constant rank constraint qualification [Math. Program. Study 21:110--126, 1984] introduced by Janin for nonlinear programming has been recently extended to a conic context by exploiting the eigenvector structure of the problem. In this paper we propose a more general and geometric approach for defining a new extension of this condition to the conic context. The main advantage of our approach is that we are able to recast the strong second-order properties of the constant rank condition in a conic context. In particular, we obtain a second-order necessary optimality condition tha…
In this paper, we introduce a new second-order directional derivative and a second-order subdifferential of Hadamard type for an arbitrary nondifferentiable function. We derive several second-order optimality conditions for a local and a global minimum and an isolated local minimum of second-order in unconstrained optimization. In particular, we obtain two types results with generalized convex functions. We also compare our conditions with the results of the recently published paper [Bednavrik, D., Pastor, K.: On second-order conditions in unconstrained optimization. Math. Program. Ser A, {\bf…
Semidefinite programming (SDP) is the task of optimizing a linear function over the common solution set of finitely many linear matrix inequalities (LMIs). For the running time of SDP solvers, the maximal matrix size of these LMIs is usually more critical than their number. The semidefinite extension degree $\text{sxdeg}(K)$ of a convex set $K\subseteq\mathbb R^n$ is the smallest number $d$ such that $K$ is a linear image of a finite intersection $S_1\cap\dots\cap S_N$, where each $S_i$ is a spectrahedron defined by a linear matrix inequality of size $\le d$. Thus $\text{sxdeg}(K)$ can be seen…
Exponents and logarithms are fundamental components in many important applications such as logistic regression, maximum likelihood, relative entropy, and so on. Since the exponential cone can be viewed as the epigraph of perspective of the natural exponential function or the hypograph of perspective of the natural logarithm function, many mixed-integer convex programs involving exponential or logarithm functions can be recast as mixed-integer exponential conic programs (MIECPs). However, unlike mixed-integer linear programs (MILPs) and mixed-integer second-order conic programs (MISOCPs), MIECP…
An important problem in tree breeding is optimal selection from candidate pedigree members to produce the highest performance in seed orchards, while conserving essential genetic diversity. The most beneficial members should contribute as much as possible, but such selection of orchard parents would reduce performance of the orchard progeny due to serious inbreeding. To avoid inbreeding, we should include a constraint on the numerator relationship matrix to keep a group coancestry under an appropriate threshold. Though an SDP (semidefinite programming) approach proposed by Pong-Wong and Woolli…
Internal positivity offers a computationally cheap certificate for external (input-output) positivity of a linear time-invariant system. However, the drawback with this certificate lies in its realization dependency. Firstly, computing such a realization requires to find a polyhedral cone with a potentially high number of extremal generators that lifts the dimension of the state-space representation, significantly. Secondly, not all externally positive systems posses an internally positive realization. Thirdly, in many typical applications such as controller design, system identification and m…
Let $C$ be a closed convex subset of a real Hilbert space containing the origin, and assume that $K$ is the homogenization cone of $C$, i.e., the smallest closed convex cone containing $C \times \{1\}$. Homogenization cones play an important role in optimization as they include, for instance, the second-order/Lorentz/"ice cream" cone. In this note, we discuss the polar cone of $K$ as well as an algorithm for finding the projection onto $K$ provided that the projection onto $C$ is available. Various examples illustrate our results.
In this paper, we present new convex relaxations for nonconvex quadratically constrained quadratic programming (QCQP) problems. While recent research has focused on strengthening convex relaxations using reformulation-linearization technique (RLT), the state-of-the-art methods lose their effectiveness when dealing with (multiple) nonconvex quadratic constraints in QCQP. In this research, we decompose and relax each nonconvex constraint to two second order cone (SOC) constraints and then linearize the products of the SOC constraints and linear constraints to construct some effective new valid c…
This paper develops a novel second order cone relaxation of the semidefinite programming formulation of optimal power flow, that does not imply the `angle relaxation'. We build on a technique developed by Kim et al., extend it for complex matrices, and apply it to 3x3 positive semidefinite matrices to generate novel second-order cone constraints that augment upon the well-known 2x2 principal-minor based second-order cone constraints. Finally, we apply it to optimal power flow in meshed networks and provide numerical illustrations.
