Semidefinite programming (SDP) is the task of optimizing a linear function over the common solution set of finitely many linear matrix inequalities (LMIs). For the running time of SDP solvers, the maximal matrix size of these LMIs is usually more critical than their number. The semidefinite extension degree $\text{sxdeg}(K)$ of a convex set $K\subseteq\mathbb R^n$ is the smallest number $d$ such that $K$ is a linear image of a finite intersection $S_1\cap\dots\cap S_N$, where each $S_i$ is a spectrahedron defined by a linear matrix inequality of size $\le d$. Thus $\text{sxdeg}(K)$ can be seen as a measure for the complexity of performing semidefinite programs over the set $K$. We give several equivalent characterizations of $\text{sxdeg}(K)$, and use them to prove our main result: $\text{sxdeg}(K)\le2$ holds for any closed convex semialgebraic set $K\subseteq\mathbb R^2$. In other words, such $K$ can be represented using the second-order cone.
In this paper we generalize the factorization theorem of Gouveia, Parrilo and Thomas to a broader class of convex sets. Given a general convex set, we define a slack operator associated to the set and its polar according to whether the convex set is full dimensional, whether it is a translated cone and whether it contains lines. We strengthen the condition of a cone lift by requiring not only the convex set is the image of an affine slice of a given closed convex cone, but also its recession cone is the image of the linear slice of the closed convex cone. We show that the generalized lift of a…
We investigate the relationship between the existence of directional derivatives for cone-convex functions with values in a Banach space Y and isomorphisms between Y and c0.
Spectral analysis of convex processes has led to many results in the analysis of differential inclusions with a convex process. In particular the characterization of eigenvalues with eigenvectors in a given cone has led to results on controllability and stabilizability. However, these characterizations can handle only pointed cones. This paper will generalize all known results characterizing eigenvalues of convex processes with eigenvectors in a given cone. In addition, we reveal the link between the assumptions on our main theorem and classical geometric control theory.
In this paper we address the basic geometric question of when a given convex set is the image under a linear map of an affine slice of a given closed convex cone. Such a representation or 'lift' of the convex set is especially useful if the cone admits an efficient algorithm for linear optimization over its affine slices. We show that the existence of a lift of a convex set to a cone is equivalent to the existence of a factorization of an operator associated to the set and its polar via elements in the cone and its dual. This generalizes a theorem of Yannakakis that established a connection be…
Kuhn-Tucker conditions for mathematical programming problems in Banach spaces partially ordered by cone with empty interior are obtained under strong simultaneity condition. If partial ordered cone has interior point, it is proved that Slater and strong simultaneity conditions are equivalent.
A convex optimization problem in conic form involves minimizing a linear functional over the intersection of a convex cone and an affine subspace. In some cases, it is possible to replace a conic formulation using a certain cone, with a 'lifted' conic formulation using another cone that is higher-dimensional, but simpler, in some sense. One situation in which this can be computationally advantageous is when the higher-dimensional cone is a Cartesian product of many 'low-complexity' cones, such as second-order cones, or small positive semidefinite cones. This paper studies obstructions to a con…
A closed convex subset of a normed linear space is said to have the strong separation property if it can be strongly separated from every other disjoint closed and convex set by a closed hyperplane. In this paper we give some results on the separation of convex sets with noticing the role of barrier cones, develop some characterizations of subsets having the strong separation property, and apply them to consider a class of convex optimization problems.
We establish finite convergence of circumcentered-reflection method (CRM) for the case of intersection of two closed convex cones in a real Hilbert space. We apply this result to prove the finite convergence for two polyhedral sets in R^n.
In order to express a polyhedron as the (Minkowski) sum of a polytope and a polyhedral cone, Motzkin (1936) made a transition from the polyhedron to a polyhedral cone. Based on his excellent idea, we represent a set by a characteristic cone. By using this representation, we then reach four main results: (i) expressing a closed convex set containing no line as the direct sum of the convex hull of its extreme points and conical hull of its extreme directions, (ii) establishing a convex programming (CP) based framework for determining a maximal element-an element with the maximum number of positi…
This paper works with preconvexlike set-valued vector optimization problems in topological linear spaces. A Fakas-Minkowski alternative theorem, a scalarization theorem, some vector saddle-point theorems and some scalar saddle point theorem are proved.
A recent series of papers has examined the extension of disjunctive-programming techniques to mixed-integer second-order-cone programming. For example, it has been shown---by several authors using different techniques---that the convex hull of the intersection of an ellipsoid, $E$, and a split disjunction, $(l - x_j)(x_j - u) \le 0$ with $l < u$, equals the intersection of $E$ with an additional second-order-cone representable (SOCr) set. In this paper, we study more general intersections of the form $K \cap Q$ and $K \cap Q \cap H$, where $K$ is a SOCr cone, $Q$ is a nonconvex cone defined by…
We study the boundary structure of closed convex cones, with a focus on facially dual complete (nice) cones. These cones form a proper subset of facially exposed convex cones, and they behave well in the context of duality theory for convex optimization. Using the well-known and commonly used concept of tangent cones in nonlinear optimization, we introduce some new notions for exposure of faces of convex sets. Based on these new notions, we obtain a necessary condition and a sufficient condition for a cone to be facially dual complete. In our sufficient condition, we utilize a new notion calle…
We introduce a convex optimization modeling framework that transforms a convex optimization problem expressed in a form natural and convenient for the user into an equivalent cone program in a way that preserves fast linear transforms in the original problem. By representing linear functions in the transformation process not as matrices, but as graphs that encode composition of linear operators, we arrive at a matrix-free cone program, i.e., one whose data matrix is represented by a linear operator and its adjoint. This cone program can then be solved by a matrix-free cone solver. By combining…
The basic tool for solving problems in metric geometry and isotonic regression is the metric projection onto closed convex cones. Isotonicity of these projections with respect to a given order relation can facilitate finding the solutions of the above problems. In the recent note "A. B. Németh and S.Z. Németh: Isotonic regression and isotonic projection. Linear Algebra and its Applications, 494: 80-89 (2016)" this problem was studied for the coordinate-wise ordering. This study was the starting point for further investigations, such as the ones presented here. The order relation in the Euclide…
In this paper the simplicial cone constrained convex quadratic programming problem is studied. The optimality conditions of this problem consist in a linear complementarity problem. This fact, under a suitable condition, leads to an equivalence between the simplicial cone constrained convex quadratic programming problem and the one of finding the unique solution of a nonsmooth system of equations. It is shown that a semi-smooth Newton method applied to this nonsmooth system of equations is always well defined and under a mild assumption on the simplicial cone the method generates a sequence th…
In this paper, we study the problem of finding the Euclidean distance to a convex cone generated by a set of discrete points in $\mathbb{R}^n_+$. In particular, we are interested in problems where the discrete points are the set of feasible solutions of some binary linear programming constraints. This problem has applications in manufacturing, machine learning, clustering, pattern recognition, and statistics. Our problem is a high-dimensional constrained optimization problem. We propose a Frank-Wolfe based algorithm to solve this non-convex optimization problem with a convex-noncompact feasibl…
In this paper we extend the notion of a Lorentz cone. We call a closed convex set isotone projection set with respect to a pointed closed convex cone if the projection onto the set is isotone (i.e., monotone) with respect to the order defined by the cone. We determine the isotone projection sets with respect to an extended Lorentz cone. In particular a Cartesian product between an Euclidean space and any closed convex set in another Euclidean space is such a set. We use this property to find solutions of general mixed complementarity problems in an iterative way.
The notion of the angle between two subspaces has a long history, dating back to Friedrichs's work in 1937 and Dixmier's work on the minimal angle in 1949. In 2006, Deutsch and Hundal studied extensions to convex sets in order to analyze convergence rates for the cyclic projections algorithm. In this work, we characterize the positivity of the minimal angle between two convex cones. We show the existence of, and necessary conditions for, optimal solutions of minimal angle problems associated with two convex subsets as well. Moreover, we generalize a result by Deutsch on minimal angles from lin…
This paper is devoted to the general problem of projection onto a polyhedral convex cone generated by a finite set of generators. This problem is reformulated into projection onto the polytope obtained by simple truncation of the original cone. Then it can be solved with just two closely related projections onto the same bounded polytope. This approach's computational performance is conditioned by the crucial tool's efficiency for solving the fundamental problem of finding the least norm element in a convex hull of a given finite set of points. In our numerical experiments, we used for this pur…
Let $C$ be a closed convex subset of a real Hilbert space containing the origin, and assume that $K$ is the homogenization cone of $C$, i.e., the smallest closed convex cone containing $C \times \{1\}$. Homogenization cones play an important role in optimization as they include, for instance, the second-order/Lorentz/"ice cream" cone. In this note, we discuss the polar cone of $K$ as well as an algorithm for finding the projection onto $K$ provided that the projection onto $C$ is available. Various examples illustrate our results.
Mixed-integer convex representable (MICP-R) sets are those sets that can be represented exactly through a mixed-integer convex programming formulation. Following up on recent work by Lubin et al. (2017, 2020) we investigate structural geometric properties of MICP-R sets, which strongly differentiate them from the class of mixed-integer linear representable sets (MILP-R). First, we provide an example of an MICP-R set which is the countably infinite union of convex sets with countably infinitely many different recession cones. This is in sharp contrast with MILP-R sets which are at most infinite…
Balas introduced disjunctive cuts in the 1970s for mixed-integer linear programs. Several recent papers have attempted to extend this work to mixed-integer conic programs. In this paper we study the structure of the convex hull of a two-term disjunction applied to the second-order cone, and develop a methodology to derive closed-form expressions for convex inequalities describing the resulting convex hull. Our approach is based on first characterizing the structure of undominated valid linear inequalities for the disjunction and then using conic duality to derive a family of convex, possibly n…
We propose and analyse primal-dual interior-point algorithms for convex optimization problems in conic form. The families of algorithms we analyse are so-called short-step algorithms and they match the current best iteration complexity bounds for primal-dual symmetric interior-point algorithm of Nesterov and Todd, for symmetric cone programming problems with given self-scaled barriers. Our results apply to any self-concordant barrier for any convex cone. We also prove that certain specializations of our algorithms to hyperbolic cone programming problems (which lie strictly between symmetric co…
We give explicit polynomial-sized (in $n$ and $k$) semidefinite representations of the hyperbolicity cones associated with the elementary symmetric polynomials of degree $k$ in $n$ variables. These convex cones form a family of non-polyhedral outer approximations of the non-negative orthant that preserve low-dimensional faces while successively discarding high-dimensional faces. More generally we construct explicit semidefinite representations (polynomial-sized in $k,m$, and $n$) of the hyperbolicity cones associated with $k$th directional derivatives of polynomials of the form $p(x) = \det(\s…
Scalar rational functions with a non-negative real part on the right half plane, called positive, are classical in the study of electrical networks, dissipative systems, Nevanlinna-Pick interpolation and other areas. We here study generalized positive functions, i.e with a non-negative real part on the imaginary axis. These functions form a Convex Invertible Cone, cic in short, and we explore two partitionings of this set: (i) into a pair of even and odd subcics and (ii) to (infinitely many non-invertible) convex cones of functions with prescribed poles and zeroes in the right half plane. It i…
In this paper, we provide an equivalent condition for the Chvatal-Gomory (CG) closure of a closed convex set to be finitely-generated. Using this result, we are able to prove that, for any closed convex set that can be written as the Minkowski sum of a compact convex set and a closed convex cone, its CG closure is a rational polyhedron if and only if its recession cone is a rational polyhedral cone. As a consequence, this generalizes and unifies all the currently known results, for the case of rational polyhedron and compact convex set.
The second-order cone is a class of simple convex cones and optimizing over them can be done more efficiently than with semidefinite programming. It is interesting both in theory and in practice to investigate which convex cones admit a representation using second-order cones, given that they have a strong expressive ability. In this paper, we prove constructively that the cone of sums of nonnegative circuits (SONC) admits a second-order cone representation. Based on this, we give a new algorithm to compute SONC decompositions for certain classes of nonnegative polynomials via second-order con…
This note conducts a comparative study of some approximating properties of the metric projection, generalized projection, and generalized metric projection in uniformly convex and uniformly smooth Banach spaces. We prove that the inverse images of the metric projections are closed and convex cones, but they are not necessarily convex. In contrast, inverse images of the generalized projection are closed and convex cones. Furthermore, the inverse images of the generalized metric projection are neither a convex set nor a cone. We also prove that the distance from a point to its projection at a co…
In this paper, we present new convex relaxations for nonconvex quadratically constrained quadratic programming (QCQP) problems. While recent research has focused on strengthening convex relaxations using reformulation-linearization technique (RLT), the state-of-the-art methods lose their effectiveness when dealing with (multiple) nonconvex quadratic constraints in QCQP. In this research, we decompose and relax each nonconvex constraint to two second order cone (SOC) constraints and then linearize the products of the SOC constraints and linear constraints to construct some effective new valid c…
Block coordinate descent (BCD) methods and their variants have been widely used in coping with large-scale nonconstrained optimization problems in many fields such as imaging processing, machine learning, compress sensing and so on. For problem with coupling constraints, Nonlinear convex cone programs (NCCP) are important problems with many practical applications, but these problems are hard to solve by using existing block coordinate type methods. This paper introduces a stochastic primal-dual coordinate (SPDC) method for solving large-scale NCCP. In this method, we randomly choose a block of…
A pointed convex cone naturally induces a partial order, and further a notion of nondecreasingness for functions. We consider extended real-valued functions defined on the cone. Monotone conjugates for these functions can be defined in an analogous way to the standard convex conjugate. The only difference is that the supremum is taken over the cone instead of the entire space. We give sufficient conditions for the cone under which the corresponding Fenchel-Moreau biconjugation identity holds for proper, convex, lower semicontinuous, and nondecreasing functions defined on the cone. In addition,…
We present a generalization of the notion of neighborliness to non-polyhedral convex cones. Although a definition of neighborliness is available in the non-polyhedral case in the literature, it is fairly restrictive as it requires all the low-dimensional faces to be polyhedral. Our approach is more flexible and includes, for example, the cone of positive-semidefinite matrices as a special case (this cone is not neighborly in general). We term our generalization Terracini convexity due to its conceptual similarity with the conclusion of Terracini's lemma from algebraic geometry. Polyhedral cone…
Let $n$ and $k$ be nonnegative integers such that $1\le k\le n+1$. The convex cone $\mathcal{F}_+^{k:n}$ of all functions $f$ on an arbitrary interval $I\subseteq\mathbb{R}$ whose derivatives $f^{(j)}$ of orders $j=k-1,\dots,n$ are nondecreasing is characterized in terms of extreme rays of the cone $\mathcal{F}_+^{k:n}$. A simple description of the convex cone dual to $\mathcal{F}_+^{k:n}$ is given. These results are useful in, and were motivated by, applications in probability. In fact, the results are obtained in a more general setting with certain generalized derivatives of $f$ of the $j$th…
Amenability is a geometric property of convex cones that is stronger than facial exposedness and assists in the study of error bounds for conic feasibility problems. In this paper we establish numerous properties of amenable cones, and investigate the relationships between amenability and other properties of convex cones, such as niceness and projectional exposure. We show that the amenability of a compact slice of a closed convex cone is equivalent to the amenability of the cone, and prove several results on the preservation of amenability under intersections and other convex operations. It t…
