In this paper the simplicial cone constrained convex quadratic programming problem is studied. The optimality conditions of this problem consist in a linear complementarity problem. This fact, under a suitable condition, leads to an equivalence between the simplicial cone constrained convex quadratic programming problem and the one of finding the unique solution of a nonsmooth system of equations. It is shown that a semi-smooth Newton method applied to this nonsmooth system of equations is always well defined and under a mild assumption on the simplicial cone the method generates a sequence that converges linearly to its solution. Besides, we also show that the generated sequence is bounded for any starting point and a formula for any accumulation point of this sequence is presented. The presented numerical results suggest that this approach achieves accurate solutions to large problems in few iterations.
The congruence orbit of a matrix has a natural connection with the linear complementarity problem on simplicial cones formulated for the matrix. In terms of the two approaches -- the congruence orbit and the family of all simplicial cones -- we give equivalent classification of matrices from the point of view of the complementarity theory.
By using Moreau's decomposition theorem for projecting onto cones, the problem of projecting onto a simplicial cone is reduced to finding the unique solution of a nonsmooth system of equations. It is shown that Picard's method applied to the system of equations associated to the problem of projecting onto a simplicial cone generates a sequence that converges linearly to the solution of the system. Numerical experiments are presented making the comparison between Picard's and semi-smooth Newton's methods to solve the nonsmooth system associated with the problem of projecting a point onto a simp…
A very fast heuristic iterative method of projection on simplicial cones is presented. It consists in solving two linear systems at each step of the iteration. The extensive experiments indicate that the method furnishes the exact solution in more then 99.7 percent of the cases. The average number of steps is 5.67 (we have not found any examples which required more than 13 steps) and the relative number of steps with respect to the dimension decreases dramatically. Roughly speaking, for high enough dimensions the absolute number of steps is independent of the dimension.
Normaliz is an open-source software for the computation of lattice points in rational polyhedra, or, in a different language, the solutions of linear diophantine systems. The two main computational goals are (i) finding a system of generators of the set of lattice points and (ii) counting elements degree-wise in a generating function, the Hilbert Series. In the homogeneous case, in which the polyhedron is a cone, the set of generators is the Hilbert basis of the intersection of the cone and the lattice, an affine monoid. We will present some improvements to the Normaliz algorithm by subdividin…
In this paper a special semi-smooth equation associated to the second order cone is studied. It is shown that, under mild assumptions, the semi-smooth Newton method applied to this equation is well-defined and the generated sequence is globally and Q-linearly convergent to a solution. As an application, the obtained results are used to study the linear second order cone complementarity problem, with special emphasis on the particular case of positive definite matrices. Moreover, some computational experiments designed to investigate the practical viability of the method are presented.

The LP-Newton method solves the linear programming problem (LP) by repeatedly projecting a current point onto a certain relevant polytope. In this paper, we extend the algorithmic framework of the LP-Newton method to the second-order cone programming problem (SOCP) via a linear semi-infinite programming (LSIP) reformulation of the given SOCP. In the extension, we produce a sequence by projection onto polyhedral cones constructed from LPs obtained by finitely relaxing the LSIP. We show the global convergence property of the proposed algorithm under mild assumptions, and investigate its efficien…
In this paper, we study the linear complementarity problems on extended second order cones. We convert a linear complementarity problem on an extended second order cone into a mixed complementarity problem on the non-negative orthant. We state necessary and sufficient conditions for a point to be a solution of the converted problem. We also present solution strategies for this problem, such as the Newton method and Levenberg-Marquardt algorithm. Finally, we present some numerical examples.
We study a class of parametrizations of convex cones of positive semidefinite matrices with prescribed zeros. Each such cone corresponds to a graph whose non-edges determine the prescribed zeros. Each parametrization in this class is a polynomial map associated with a simplicial complex supported on cliques of the graph. The images of the maps are convex cones, and the maps can only be surjective onto the cone of zero-constrained positive semidefinite matrices when the associated graph is chordal and the simplicial complex is the clique complex of the graph. Our main result gives a semi-algebr…
We introduce Newton-ADMM, a method for fast conic optimization. The basic idea is to view the residuals of consecutive iterates generated by the alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM) as a set of fixed point equations, and then use a nonsmooth Newton method to find a solution; we apply the basic idea to the Splitting Cone Solver (SCS), a state-of-the-art method for solving generic conic optimization problems. We demonstrate theoretically, by extending the theory of semismooth operators, that Newton-ADMM converges rapidly (i.e., quadratically) to a solution; empirically, Newton-ADMM…
The doubly nonnegative (DNN) cone, being the set of all positive semidefinite matrices whose elements are nonnegative, is a popular approximation of the computationally intractable completely positive cone. The major difficulty for implementing a Newton-type method to compute the projection of a given large scale matrix onto the DNN cone lies in the possible failure of the constraint nondegeneracy, a generalization of the linear independence constraint qualification for nonlinear programming. Such a failure results in the singularity of the Jacobian of the nonsmooth equation representing the K…
This paper presents a fast first-order method for solving the quasi-static contact problem with the Coulomb friction. It is known that this problem can be formulated as a second-order cone linear complementarity problem, for which regularized or semi-smooth Newton methods are widely used. As an alternative approach, this paper develops a method based on an accelerated primal-dual algorithm. The proposed method is easy to implement, as most of computation consists of additions and multiplications of vectors and matrices. Numerical experiments demonstrate that this method outperforms a regulariz…

In the present paper, in order to fnd a singularity of a vector field defined on Riemannian manifolds, we present a new globalization strategy of Newton method and establish its global convergence with superlinear rate. In particular, this globalization generalizes for a general retraction the existing damped Newton's method. The presented global convergence analysis does not require any hypotesesis on singularity of the vector field. We applied the proposed method to solve the truncated singular value problem on the product of two Stiefel manifolds, the dextrous hand grasping problem on the c…
