The $\mathcal{S}$-cone provides a common framework for cones of polynomials or exponential sums which establish non-negativity upon the arithmetic-geometric inequality, in particular for sums of non-negative circuit polynomials (SONC) or sums of arithmetic-geometric exponentials (SAGE). In this paper, we study the $\mathcal{S}$-cone and its dual from the viewpoint of second-order representability. Extending results of Averkov and of Wang and Magron on the primal SONC cone, we provide explicit generalized second-order descriptions for rational $\mathcal{S}$-cones and theirs duals.
Mixed-integer convex representable (MICP-R) sets are those sets that can be represented exactly through a mixed-integer convex programming formulation. Following up on recent work by Lubin et al. (2017, 2020) we investigate structural geometric properties of MICP-R sets, which strongly differentiate them from the class of mixed-integer linear representable sets (MILP-R). First, we provide an example of an MICP-R set which is the countably infinite union of convex sets with countably infinitely many different recession cones. This is in sharp contrast with MILP-R sets which are at most infinite…
We introduce a stochastic coordinate extension of the first-order primal-dual method studied by Cohen and Zhu (1984) and Zhao and Zhu (2018) to solve Composite Optimization with Composite Cone-constraints (COCC). In this method, we randomly choose a block of variables based on the uniform distribution. The linearization and Bregman-like function (core function) to that randomly selected block allow us to get simple parallel primal-dual decomposition for COCC. We obtain almost surely convergence and O(1/t) expected convergence rate in this work. The high probability complexity bound is also der…
Block coordinate descent (BCD) methods and their variants have been widely used in coping with large-scale nonconstrained optimization problems in many fields such as imaging processing, machine learning, compress sensing and so on. For problem with coupling constraints, Nonlinear convex cone programs (NCCP) are important problems with many practical applications, but these problems are hard to solve by using existing block coordinate type methods. This paper introduces a stochastic primal-dual coordinate (SPDC) method for solving large-scale NCCP. In this method, we randomly choose a block of…
In this paper, we define a new, special second order cone as a type-$k$ second order cone. We focus on the case of $k=2$, which can be viewed as SOCO with an additional {\em complicating variable}. For this new problem, we develop the necessary prerequisites, based on previous work for traditional SOCO. We then develop a primal-dual interior point algorithm for solving a type-2 second order conic optimization (SOCO) problem, based on a family of kernel functions suitable for this type-2 SOCO. We finally derive the following iteration bound for our framework: \[\frac{L^γ}{θκγ} \left[2N ψ\left( …
We study preconditioned proximal point methods for a class of saddle point problems, where the preconditioner decouples the overall proximal point method into an alternating primal--dual method. This is akin to the Chambolle--Pock method or the ADMM. In our work, we replace the squared distance in the dual step by a barrier function on a symmetric cone, while using a standard (Euclidean) proximal step for the primal variable. We show that under non-degeneracy and simple linear constraints, such a hybrid primal--dual algorithm can achieve linear convergence on originally strongly convex problem…
We propose and analyse primal-dual interior-point algorithms for convex optimization problems in conic form. The families of algorithms we analyse are so-called short-step algorithms and they match the current best iteration complexity bounds for primal-dual symmetric interior-point algorithm of Nesterov and Todd, for symmetric cone programming problems with given self-scaled barriers. Our results apply to any self-concordant barrier for any convex cone. We also prove that certain specializations of our algorithms to hyperbolic cone programming problems (which lie strictly between symmetric co…
Nonlinear Convex Cone Programming (NCCP) problems are important and have many practical applications. In this paper, we introduces a flexible first-order primal-dual algorithm called the Variant Auxiliary Problem Principle (VAPP) for solving NCCP problems when the objective function and constraints are smooth and may be nonsmooth. Each iteration of VAPP generates a nonlinear approximation to the primal problem of an augmented Lagrangian method. The approximation incorporates both linearization and a variable distance-like function, and then the iterations of VAPP provide one decomposition prop…
This paper is devoted to primal conditions of error bounds for a general function. In terms of Bouligand tangent cones, lower Hadamard directional derivatives and the Hausdorff-Pompeiu excess of subsets, we provide several necessary and/or sufficient conditions of error bounds with mild assumptions. Then we use these primal results to characterize error bounds for composite-convex functions (i.e. the composition of a convex function with a continuously differentiable mapping). It is proved that the primal characterization of error bounds can be established via Bouligand tangent cones, directio…
A class of convex constrained minimization problems over polyhedral cones for geometry-dependent quadratic objective functions is considered in a functional analysis framework. Shape differentiability of the primal minimization problem needs a bijective property for mapping of the primal cone. This restrictive assumption is relaxed to bijection of the dual cone within the Lagrangian formulation as a primal-dual minimax problem. In this paper, we give results on primal-dual shape sensitivity analysis that extends the class of shape-differentiable problems supported by explicit formula of the sh…
This paper presents a fast first-order method for solving the quasi-static contact problem with the Coulomb friction. It is known that this problem can be formulated as a second-order cone linear complementarity problem, for which regularized or semi-smooth Newton methods are widely used. As an alternative approach, this paper develops a method based on an accelerated primal-dual algorithm. The proposed method is easy to implement, as most of computation consists of additions and multiplications of vectors and matrices. Numerical experiments demonstrate that this method outperforms a regulariz…
We develop a new interior-point method (IPM) for symmetric-cone optimization, a common generalization of linear, second-order-cone, and semidefinite programming. In contrast to classical IPMs, we update iterates with a geodesic of the cone instead of the kernel of the linear constraints. This approach yields a primal-dual-symmetric, scale-invariant, and line-search-free algorithm that uses just half the variables of a standard primal-dual IPM. With elementary arguments, we establish polynomial-time convergence matching the standard square-root-n bound. Finally, we prove global convergence of a…
We study infeasible-start primal-dual interior-point methods for convex optimization problems given in a typically natural form we denote as Domain-Driven formulation. Our algorithms extend many advantages of primal-dual interior-point techniques available for conic formulations, such as the current best complexity bounds, and more robust certificates of approximate optimality, unboundedness, and infeasibility, to Domain-Driven formulations. The complexity results are new for the infeasible-start setup used, even in the case of linear programming. In addition to complexity results, our algorit…

This paper presents a canonical dual approach for solving nonconvex quadratic minimization problem. By using the canonical duality theory, nonconvex primal minimization problems over n-dimensional Lorentz cone can be transformed into certain canonical dual problems with only one dual variable, which can be solved by using standard convex minimization methods. Extremality conditions of these solutions are classified by the triality theory. Applications are illustrated.
Most numerical methods for conic problems use the homogenous primal-dual embedding, which yields a primal-dual solution or a certificate establishing primal or dual infeasibility. Following Patrinos (and others, 2018), we express the embedding as the problem of finding a zero of a mapping containing a skew-symmetric linear function and projections onto cones and their duals. We focus on the special case when this mapping is regular, i.e., differentiable with nonsingular derivative matrix, at a solution point. While this is not always the case, it is a very common occurrence in practice. We pro…
In this work we study a constrained monotone inclusion involving the normal cone to a closed vector subspace and a priori information on primal solutions. We model this information by imposing that solutions belongs to the fixed point set of an averaged nonexpansive mapping. We characterize the solutions using an auxiliary inclusion that involves the partial inverse operator. Then, we propose the primal-dual partial inverse splitting and we prove its weak convergence to a solution of the inclusion, generalizing several methods in the literature. The efficiency of the proposed method is illustr…
Two approximation algorithms for solving convex vector optimization problems (CVOPs) are provided. Both algorithms solve the CVOP and its geometric dual problem simultaneously. The first algorithm is an extension of Benson's outer approximation algorithm, and the second one is a dual variant of it. Both algorithms provide an inner as well as an outer approximation of the (upper and lower) images. Only one scalar convex program has to be solved in each iteration. We allow objective and constraint functions that are not necessarily differentiable, allow solid pointed polyhedral ordering cones, a…
We introduce a first order method for solving very large convex cone programs. The method uses an operator splitting method, the alternating directions method of multipliers, to solve the homogeneous self-dual embedding, an equivalent feasibility problem involving finding a nonzero point in the intersection of a subspace and a cone. This approach has several favorable properties. Compared to interior-point methods, first-order methods scale to very large problems, at the cost of requiring more time to reach very high accuracy. Compared to other first-order methods for cone programs, our approa…
We study geometric duality for convex vector optimization problems. For a primal problem with a $q$-dimensional objective space, we formulate a dual problem with a $(q+1)$-dimensional objective space. Consequently, different from an existing approach, the geometric dual problem does not depend on a fixed direction parameter and the resulting dual image is a convex cone. We prove a one-to-one correspondence between certain faces of the primal and dual images. In addition, we show that a polyhedral approximation for one image gives rise to a polyhedral approximation for the other. Based on this,…
We develop a novel primal-dual algorithm to solve a class of nonsmooth and nonlinear compositional convex minimization problems, which covers many existing and brand-new models as special cases. Our approach relies on a combination of a new nonconvex potential function, Nesterov's accelerated scheme, and an adaptive parameter updating strategy. Our algorithm is single-loop and has low per-iteration complexity. Under only general convexity and mild assumptions, our algorithm achieves $\mathcal{O}(1/k)$ convergence rates through three different criteria: primal objective residual, dual objective…
In this paper, a projected primal-dual gradient flow of augmented Lagrangian is presented to solve convex optimization problems that are not necessarily strictly convex. The optimization variables are restricted by a convex set with computable projection operation on its tangent cone as well as equality constraints. As a supplement of the analysis in \cite{niederlander2016distributed}, we show that the projected dynamical system converges to one of the saddle points and hence finding an optimal solution. Moreover, the problem of distributedly maximizing the algebraic connectivity of an undirec…
This paper studies the online stochastic resource allocation problem (RAP) with chance constraints and conditional expectation constraints. The online RAP is an integer linear programming problem where resource consumption coefficients are revealed column by column along with the corresponding revenue coefficients. When a column is revealed, the corresponding decision variables are determined instantaneously without future information. In online applications, the resource consumption coefficients are often obtained by prediction. An application for such scenario rises from the online order ful…
Using the dual cone of sums of nonnegative circuits (SONC), we provide a relaxation of the global optimization problem to minimize an exponential sum and, as a special case, a multivariate real polynomial. Our approach builds on two key observations. First, that the dual SONC cone is contained in the primal one. Hence, containment in this cone is a certificate of nonnegativity. Second, we show that membership in the dual cone can be verified by a linear program. We implement the algorithm and present initial experimental results comparing our method to existing approaches.
In this paper, we study the facial structure of the linear image of a cone. We define the singularity degree of a face of a cone to be the minimum number of steps it takes to expose it using exposing vectors from the dual cone. We show that the singularity degree of the linear image of a cone is exactly the number of facial reduction steps to obtain the minimal face in a corresponding primal conic optimization problem. This result generalizes the relationship between the complexity of general facial reduction algorithms and facial exposedness of conic images under a linear transform by Drusvya…
This paper is devoted to the generalized differential study of the normal cone mappings associated with a large class of parametric constraint systems (PCS) that appear, in particular, in nonpolyhedral conic programming. Conducting a local second-order analysis of such systems, we focus on computing the (primal-dual) graphical derivative of the normal cone mapping under the $C^2$-cone reducibility of the constraint set together with the fairly weak metric subregularity constraint qualification and its uniform parametric counterpart known as Robinson stability. The obtained precise formulas for…
Among many approaches to increase the computational efficiency of semidefinite programming (SDP) relaxation for quadratic constrained quadratic programming problems (QCQPs), exploiting the aggregate sparsity of the data matrices in the SDP by Fukuda et al. (2001) and second-order cone programming (SOCP) relaxation have been popular. In this paper, we exploit the aggregate sparsity of SOCP relaxation of QCQPs. Specifically, we prove that exploiting the aggregate sparsity reduces the number of second-order cones in the SOCP relaxation, and that we can simplify the matrix completion procedure by …

In a recent paper, Skajaa and Ye proposed a homogeneous primal-dual interior-point method for non-symmetric conic optimization. The authors showed that their algorithm converges to $\varepsilon$-accuracy in $O(\sqrtν\log \varepsilon^{-1})$ iterations, where $ν$ is the complexity parameter associated with a barrier function for the primal cone, and thus achieves the best-known iteration complexity for this class of problems. However, an earlier result from the literature was used incorrectly in the proofs of two intermediate lemmas in that paper. In this note, we propose new proofs of these res…
We discuss a weak constraint qualification for conic linear programs and its applications for a few classes of cones. This constraint qualification is used to give a solution to a problem proposed by Shapiro and Zǎlinescu and show that if a closed convex cone is such that all its non-trivial faces are polyhedral and all the non-trivial exposed faces of its dual are polyhedral, then the duality gap is zero as long as the primal and dual problems are feasible. Moreover, the common optimal value must be attained at least at one of the sides. We also show an example of a cone that meets the requir…
We propose an efficient first-order method, based on the alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM), to solve the homogeneous self-dual embedding problem for a primal-dual pair of semidefinite programs (SDPs) with chordal sparsity. Using a series of block eliminations, the per-iteration cost of our method is the same as applying a splitting method to the primal or dual alone. Moreover, our approach is more efficient than other first-order methods for generic sparse conic programs since we work with smaller semidefinite cones. In contrast to previous first-order methods that exploit cho…
This paper studies the worst case iteration complexity of an infeasible interior point method (IPM) for seconder order cone programming (SOCP), which is more convenient for warmstarting compared with feasible IPMs. The method studied bases on the homogeneous and self-dual model and the Monteiro-Zhang family of searching directions. Its worst case iteration complexity is $O\left(k^{1/2}\log\left(ε^{-1}\right)\right)$, to reduce the primal residual, dual residual, and complementarity gap by a factor of $ε$, where $k$ is the number of cone constraints. The result is the same as the best known res…
The cone of sums of nonnegative circuits (SONCs) is a subset of the cone of nonnegative polynomials / exponential sums, which has been studied extensively in recent years. In this article, we construct a subset of the SONC cone which we call the DSONC cone. The DSONC cone can be seen as an extension of the dual SONC cone; membership can be tested via linear programming. We show that the DSONC cone is a proper, full-dimensional cone, we provide a description of its extreme rays, and collect several properties that parallel those of the SONC cone. Moreover, we show that functions in the DSONC co…
In this paper, we extend the methodology developed for Support Vector Machines (SVM) using $\ell_2$-norm ($\ell_2$-SVM) to the more general case of $\ell_p$-norms with $p\ge 1$ ($\ell_p$-SVM). The resulting primal and dual problems are formulated as mathematical programming problems; namely, in the primal case, as a second order cone optimization problem and in the dual case, as a polynomial optimization problem involving homogeneous polynomials. Scalability of the primal problem is obtained via general transformations based on the expansion of functionals in Schauder spaces. The concept of Ke…
This paper addresses problems of second-order cone programming important in optimization theory and applications. The main attention is paid to the augmented Lagrangian method (ALM) for such problems considered in both exact and inexact forms. Using generalized differential tools of second-order variational analysis, we formulate the corresponding version of second-order sufficiency and use it to establish, among other results, the uniform second-order growth condition for the augmented Lagrangian. The latter allows us to justify the solvability of subproblems in the ALM and to prove the linea…
We employ chordal decomposition to reformulate a large and sparse semidefinite program (SDP), either in primal or dual standard form, into an equivalent SDP with smaller positive semidefinite (PSD) constraints. In contrast to previous approaches, the decomposed SDP is suitable for the application of first-order operator-splitting methods, enabling the development of efficient and scalable algorithms. In particular, we apply the alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM) to solve decomposed primal- and dual-standard-form SDPs. Each iteration of such ADMM algorithms requires a projection…
Strong (Lagrangian) duality of general conic optimization problems (COPs) has long been studied and its profound and complicated results appear in different forms in a wide range of literatures. As a result, characterizing the known and unknown results can sometimes be difficult. The aim of this article is to provide a unified and geometric view of strong duality of COPs for the known results. For our framework, we employ a COP minimizing a linear function in a vector variable $x$ subject to a single hyperplane constraint $x \in H$ and two cone constraints $x \in K_1$, $x \in K_2$. It can be i…
In this paper, we adopt the augmented Lagrangian method (ALM) to solve convex quadratic second-order cone programming problems (SOCPs). Fruitful results on the efficiency of the ALM have been established in the literature. Recently, it has been shown in [Cui, Sun, and Toh, {\em Math. Program.}, 178 (2019), pp. 381--415] that if the quadratic growth condition holds at an optimal solution for the dual problem, then the KKT residual converges to zero R-superlinearly when the ALM is applied to the primal problem. Moreover, Cui, Ding, and Zhao [{\em SIAM J. Optim.}, 27 (2017), pp. 2332-2355] provid…
A convex cone is homogeneous if its automorphism group acts transitively on the interior of the cone, i.e., for every pair of points in the interior of the cone, there exists a cone automorphism that maps one point to the other. Cones that are homogeneous and self-dual are called symmetric. The symmetric cones include the positive semidefinite matrix cone and the second order cone as important practical examples. In this paper, we consider the less well-studied conic optimization problems over cones that are homogeneous but not necessarily self-dual. We start with cones of positive semidefinit…
