We show that it is possible to fit all of the HERA DIS (deep inelastic scattering) data on $F_2^{γp}$ at small values of Bjorken $x$, including the data at {\em very low} $Q^2$, using a new model for $F_2^{γp}$ which both includes an asymptotic (high energy) part that satisfies a saturated Froissart bound behavior, with a vector-dominance like mass factor in the parameterization, and extends smoothly to $Q^2=0$. We require that the corresponding part of the virtual $γ^* p$ cross section match the known asymptotic part of the real $γp$ cross section at $Q^2=0$, a cross section which is determined by strong interactions and asymptotically satisfies a saturated Froissart bound of the form $α+β\ln s+γ\ln^2s$. Using this model for the asymptotic part of $F_2^{γp}$ plus a known valence contribution, we fit the asymptotic high energy part of the HERA data with $x\le 0.1$ and $W\ge 25$ GeV; the fit is excellent. We find that the mass parameter in the fit lies in the region of the light vector mesons, somewhat above the $ρ$ meson mass, and is compatible with vector dominance. We use this fit to obtain accurate results for the high energy $ep$ and isoscalar $νN$ total cross sections. Both cross sections obey an analytic expression of the type $a +b \ln E +c \ln^2 E +d \ln^3 E$ at large energies $E$ of the incident particle, reflecting the fact that the underlying strong interaction parts of the $γ^*p$, $Z^*N$ and $W^*N$ cross sections satisfy the saturated Froissart bound. Since approximately 50% of the $νN$ center of mass (cms) energy is found in $W$---the cms energy of the strongly interacting intermediate vector boson-nucleon system---a study of ultra-high-energy neutrino-nucleon cross sections would allow us, for the first time, to explore {\em strong interactions at incredibly high energies}.
The sensitivity of the Deep Inelastic Compton (DIC) scattering at HERA to the structure of the virtual photon is discussed. It is demonstrated that the gluonic content of the virtual photon can be pinned down by measuring the photons with $p_T \sim 5 $ GeV in the proton direction.
We present results from NLO QCD calculations on the production of jets in ep collisions at HERA in a continuous range of photon virtuality Q^2. Special attention is given to the collinear singularities from the virtual photon and the resolved virtual photon component of the cross sections. Comparisons with dijet data from H1 are shown and the infrared sensitivity of dijet cross sections is discussed.
The concept of resolved virtual photons in addition to direct deep inelastic $ep$ scattering is used to simulate the 2+1 jet - rate and the forward jet cross section, which cannot be described by direct LO/NLO processes. With standard DGLAP evolution of the parton densities of the virtual photon and the proton the HERA data can be described, provided a sufficiently large scale for the hard scattering matrix element is used.
We present a model based on the concept of saturation for small $Q^2$ and small $x$. With only three parameters we achieve a good description of all Deep Inelastic Scattering data below $x=0.01$. This includes a consistent treatment of charm and a successful extrapolation into the photoproduction regime. The same model leads to a roughly constant ratio of diffractive and inclusive cross section.
Based on the two-gluon-exchange dynamical mechanism for deeply inelastic scattering at low x ~= Q^2/W^2 <<1, we stress the intimate connection between the total virtual photoabsorption cross section, deeply virtual Compton scattering and vector-meson electroproduction. A simple expression for the cross section for deeply virtual Compton scattering is derived. Parameter-free predictions are obtained for deeply-virtual Compton forward scattering and vector-meson forward production, once the parameters in the total virtual photoabsorption cross section are determined in a fit to the experimental …
We calculate the $O(α_s^2)$ heavy flavor corrections to charged current deep-inelastic scattering at large scales $Q^2 \gg m^2$. The contributing Wilson coefficient are given as convolutions between massive operator matrix elements and massless Wilson coefficients. Foregoing results in the literature are extended and corrected. Numerical results are presented for the kinematic region of the HERA data.
We calculate the O(alpha) electroweak corrections to charged- and neutral-current deep-inelastic neutrino scattering off an isoscalar target. The full one-loop-corrected cross sections, including hard photonic corrections, are evaluated and compared to an earlier result which was used in the NuTeV analysis. In particular, we compare results that differ in input-parameter scheme, treatment of real photon radiation and factorization scheme. The associated shifts in the theoretical prediction for the ratio of neutral- and charged-current cross sections can be larger than the experimental accuracy…
It has been found that recent results on forward jet production from deep inelastic scattering can neither be reproduced by models which are based on leading order $α_s$ QCD matrix elements and parton showers nor by next-to-leading order calculations. The measurement of forward jet cross sections has been suggested as a promising probe of new small $\xbj$ parton dynamics and the question is whether these data provide an indication of this. The same question arises for other experimental data in deep inelastic scattering at small $\xbj$ which can not be described by conventional models for deep…
Predictions for deep Virtual Compton Scattering are obtained in a two-component dipole model of diffraction. The model automatically includes hard and soft components and implicitly allows for ``hadronic'' contributions via large dipoles. It is also applicable to real Compton Scattering, which provides an important constraint.
We discuss the radiative corrections to charged and neutral current deep-inelastic neutrino--nucleon scattering in the minimal supersymmetric standard model (MSSM). In particular, we study deviations, delta_R^nu(nu-bar), from the Standard Model prediction for the ratios of neutral- to charged-current cross sections, taking into account all sources for deviations in the MSSM, i.e. different contributions from virtual Higgs bosons and virtual superpartners. Our calculation includes the full q^2 dependence of the one-loop amplitudes, parton distribution functions and a NuTeV-inspired process kine…
Deep-inelastic scattering at low x and elastic vector meson production are considered on the basis of the off-shell extension of the s-channel unitarity. We discuss behavior of the structure function F_2(x,Q^2) at low x and the total cross-section of virtual photon-proton scattering and obtain, in particular, the dependence sigma^{tot}_{gamma^* p}\sim (W^2)^{lambda(Q^2)} where exponent lambda(Q^2) is related to the interaction radius of a constituent quark. The energy dependence of the total cross-section of gamma^*gamma^*-interactions is calculated. The explicit mass dependence of the exponen…
A light front treatment of the nuclear wave function is developed and applied, using the mean field approximation, to infinite nuclear matter. The nuclear mesons are shown to carry about a third of the nuclear plus momentum, p+; but their momentum distribution has support only at p+ =0, and the mesons do not contribute to nuclear deep inelastic scattering. This zero mode effect occurs because the meson fields are independent of space-time position.
The next-to-leading QCD calculation for the isolated photon and isolated photon plus jet photoproduction at the ep collider DESY HERA is presented. The theoretical uncertainties are discussed in details. The predictions are compared with predictions of other authors and with data. The sensitivity of the leading order cross section to the gluon density in both the real and the virtual photon is discussed as well.
For photon virtualities of $Q^2 \gsim 20 {\rm GeV}^2$, the results of the (hard Pomeron) fit in the tensor-Pomeron model in terms of the variables $Q^2$ and the virtual-photon-proton energy squared, $W^2$, provide empirical evidence for the validity of the Color Dipole Picture (CDP). Consistency of the CDP with the perturbative QCD (pQCD) improved parton model implies the prediction of $C_2 = ε_0 \cong 0.30$ for the exponent $C_2$ of the energy-squared dependence in agreement with the results of the fits. For $Q^2 \lsim 20 GeV^2$, the CDP yields a parameter-free smooth transition from $Q^2 \gs…
The non-singlet and singlet evolution kernels of the twist--2 light-ray operators for unpolarized and polarized deep inelastic scattering are calculated in $O(α_s)$ for the general case of virtualities $q^2, q'^2 \neq 0$. Special cases as the kernels for the general single-variable evolution equation and the Altarelli-Parisi and Brodsky-Lepage limits are derived from these results.
Within the limits of the large-N_c approximation (with N_c the number of colors), we establish the high-energy behaviour of the diffractive and inclusive cross-sections for deep inelastic scattering at fixed impact parameter. We demonstrate that for sufficiently high energies and up to very large values of Q^2, well above the proton average saturation momentum <Q_s^2>, the cross-sections are dominated by dense fluctuations in the target wavefunction, that is, by the relatively rare gluon configurations which are at saturation on the resolution scale Q^2 of the virtual photon. This has importan…
Based upon the color-dipole picture, we provide closed analytic expressions for the longitudinal and the transverse photoabsorption cross sections at low values of the Bjorken variable of x<0.1. We compare with the experimental data for the longitudinal-to-transverse ratio of the (virtual) photoabsorption cross section and with our previous fit to the experimental data for the total photoabsorption cross section. Scaling in terms of the low-x scaling variable eta(W^2,Q^2) is analyzed in terms of the reduced cross section of deep inelastic scattering.
We present the results of a calculation of deep inelastic electron-photon scattering at a linear collider for very high virtuality of the intermediate gauge boson up to NLO in perturbative QCD. The real photon is produced unpolarized via the Compton back scattering of laser light of the incoming beam. For $Q^2$ values close to the masses squared of the Z and W gauge bosons, the deep inelastic electron-photon scattering process receives important contributions not only from virtual photon exchange but also from the exchange of a Z-boson and a W-boson. We find that the total cross section for ce…
Within the framework of perturbative Quantum Chromodynamics we derive transverse momentum dependent distributions describing both current and target fragmentation in semi-inclusive Deep Inelastic Scattering. We present, to leading logarithmic accuracy, the corresponding crosssections describing final state hadrons on the whole phase space. Phenomenological implications and further developments are briefly discussed.
The cross section for deep inelastic lepton-proton scattering (DIS) $\ell p \to \ell' X$ includes a diffractive deep inelastic (DDIS) contribution $\ell p \to \ell' p' X$, in which the proton remains intact with a large longitudinal momentum fraction $x_F$ greater than 0.9 and small transverse momentum. The DDIS events, which can be identified with Pomeron exchange in the $t$-channel, account for approximately $10\%$ of all of the DIS events. Thus, when one measures DIS, one automatically includes the leading-twist Bjorken-scaling DDIS events as a contribution to the DIS cross section, whether…
We study the dipole picture of high-energy virtual-photon-proton scattering. It is shown that different choices for the energy variable in the dipole cross section used in the literature are not related to each other by simple arguments equating the typical dipole size and the inverse photon virtuality, contrary to what is often stated. We argue that the good quality of fits to structure functions that use Bjorken-x as the energy variable - which is strictly speaking not justified in the dipole picture - can instead be understood as a consequence of the sign of scaling violations that occur fo…
We consider Next-to-Leading-Order QCD corrections to ADD graviton exchange relevant for Deep Inelastic Scattering experiments. We calculate the relevant NLO structure functions by calculating the virtual and real corrections for a set of graviton interaction diagrams, demonstrating the expected cancellation of the UV and IR divergences. We compare the NLO and LO results at the centre-of-mass energy relevant to HERA experiments as well as for the proposed higher energy lepton-proton collider, LHeC, which has a higher fundamental scale reach.
Using renormalization group techniques we have derived analytic formulae for the next-to-leading order heavy-quark coefficient functions in deep inelastic lepton hadron scattering. These formulae are only valid in the kinematic regime Q^2 >> m^2, where Q^2 and m^2 stand for the masses squared of the virtual photon and heavy quark respectively. Some of the applications of these asymptotic formulae will be discussed.
We present next-to-leading order calculations of one- and two-jet production in eP collisions at HERA for photon virtualities in the range 1<Q^2<100 GeV^2. Soft and collinear singularities are extracted using the phase space slicing method. Numerical results are presented for HERA conditions with the Snowmass jet definition. The transition between photoproduction and deep-inelastic scattering is investigated in detail. We compare two approaches, the usual deep-inelastic theory, where the virtual photon couples only directly to quarks and antiquarks, and the photoproduction approach, where the …
Nuclear shadowing corrections to the structure functions of deep inelastic scattering of intermediate-mass nuclei are calculated at very low values of Bjorken x and small values of Q^2 (Q^2<5 GeV^2). The two-component approach (generalized VMD plus hard pomeron) is used for a description of the underlying virtual photon - nucleon interaction. The hard component of the nucleon structure function is calculated in a framework of the colour dipole model with dipole cross section having Regge-type energy dependence. Numerical results for nuclear shadowing corrections are compared with available dat…
A model for the $p(e,e'π^+)n$ reaction which combines an improved treatment of gauge invariant meson--exchange currents and hard deep--inelastic scattering (DIS) of virtual photons off nucleons is proposed. It is shown that DIS dominates and explains the transverse response at moderate and high photon virtualities $Q^2$ whereas the longitudinal response is dominated by hadronic degrees of freedom and the pion electromagnetic form factor. This leads to a combined description of the longitudinal and transverse components of the cross section in a wide range of photon virtuality $Q^2$ and momentu…
JetViP is a computer program for the calculation of inclusive single- and dijet cross sections in eP- and e-gamma-scattering in NLO QCD. The virtuality of the photon, radiated by the incoming electron, can be chosen in a continuous range, reaching from photoproduction into deep inelastic scattering. The various contributions to the full jet cross section, including the resolved photon contributions, are implemented. The calculation is based on the phase-space-slicing method.
In reference to the recently observed high Q^2, large x events in deep-inelastic positron-proton scattering at HERA, various leptoquark and supersymmetric scenarios are discussed. We study the impact of virtual leptoquark or R-parity breaking squark exchange as well as generic contact interaction on the production of quark-antiquark pairs in $e^+e^-$ annihilation, in particular at LEP2.
We examine the total cross section of virtual photons on protons, $σ_{γ^* p}(W^2,Q^2)$, at low $x \cong Q^2/W^2 \ll 1$ and its connection with ``elastic'' diffractive production $γ^*_{T,L}p \to X^{J=1}_{T,L} p$ in the two-gluon exchange dynamics for the virtual forward Compton scattering amplitude. Solely based on the generic structure of two-gluon exchange, we establish that the cross section is described by the (imaginary part of the) amplitude for forward scattering of $q \bar q$ vector states, $(q \bar q)^{J=1}_{T,L} p \to (q \bar q)^ {J=1}_{T,L} p$. The generalized vector dominance/color …
We present a compact form of the leptonic currents for the computation of the processes involving an initial virtual boson (photon, $W^{\pm}$ or $Z_0$). For deeply inelastic scattering, once the azimuthal angle of the plane expanded by the initial- and final-state leptons are integrated over in the boson-proton rest frame, the azimuthal-asymmetric terms vanish, which, however, is NOT true when some physical quantities (such as the transverse momentum of the observed particle) are specified in laboratory frame. The abuse of the symmetry may lead to wrong results.
In Part I (in this journal) we argued that the structure function $F_2^{γp}(x,Q^2)$ in deep inelastic $ep$ scattering, regarded as a cross section for virtual $γ^*p$ scattering, has a saturated Froissart-bounded form behaving as $\ln^2 (1/x)$ at small $x$. This form provides an excellent fit to the low $x$ HERA data, including the very low $Q^2$ regions, and can be extrapolated reliably to small $x$ using the natural variable $\ln(1/x)$. We used our fit to derive quark distributions for values of $x$ down to $x=10^{-14}$. We use those distributions here to evaluate ultra-high energy (UHE) cros…
We consider the production of charm by real and virtual photons. Special attention is paid to diffractive charm production, which provides information on the gluonic content of the Pomeron. Our calculations are based on the gluon distributions of the CKMT-model, which is shown to lead to agreement with the data on open charm production in deep inelastic scattering. We compare predictions for diffractive charm production of different models for the distribution of gluons in the Pomeron. Experiments at HERA should be able to discriminate between them. Predictions for beauty production in diffrac…
We demonstrate a possibility of computation of inelastic scattering cross-section in a multi-peripheral model by application of the Laplace method to multidimensional integral over the domain of physical process. The constrained maximum point of scattering cross-section integral under condition of the energy-momentum conservation has been found. In the vicinity of this point the integrand is substituted for an expression of Gaussian type, which made possible to compute this integral numerically. The paper has two parts. The hunting procedure of the constrained maximum point is considered and t…
We present the complete next-to-leading order calculation of isolated prompt photon production in association with a jet in deep-inelastic scattering. The calculation involves, direct, resolved and fragmentation contributions. It is shown that defining the transverse momenta in the proton virtual-photon frame (CM*), as usually done, or in the laboratory frame (LAB), as done in some experiments, is not equivalent and leads to important differences concerning the perturbative approach. In fact, using the latter frame may preclude, under certain conditions, the calculation of the next-to-leading …
A review is given of the QCD corrections to charm quark production in deep inelastic electron-proton scattering. An outline of the computation of the virtual photon-parton subprocesses, from which one obtains the heavy quark coefficient functions, is given. The dominant production mechanisms are discussed. Further we show that the asymptotic heavy quark coefficient functions, computed in the limit Q^2 >> m^2, can be derived using the operator product expansion technique. Further we present the various schemes proposed in the literature to describe the charm component of the structure function …
We calculate the light cone wave functions for a virtual photon to split into quark-antiquark states, including for the first time quark masses at one loop accuracy. These wave functions can be used to calculate cross sections for several precision probes of perturbative gluon saturation at the Electron-Ion Collider. Using these wave functions we derive, for the first time, the dipole picture DIS cross sections at one loop for longitudinal and transverse virtual photons including quark masses. The quark masses are renormalized in the pole mass scheme, satisfying constraints from the requiremen…
A model for total cross sections with virtual photons is presented, in particular gamma-p and gamma-gamma cross sections are considered. Our approach is based on an existing model for photoproduction, which subdivides the total cross section into three distinct event classes: direct, VMD and anomalous. In the region of large photon virtualities, the Deep Inelastic Scattering processes (up to O(alpha_s) corrections) are obtained. Hence, the model provides a smooth transition between the two regions. By the breakdown into different event classes, a complete picture of all event properties is the…
The two photon exchange amplitude is investigated in frame of analytic properties of the virtual Compton scattering amplitude as a function of the invariant mass squared of the intermediate hadronic state. A sum rule is built, based on arguments from analyticity. It relates the differential cross section of elastic electron-proton scattering including form factors, and the cross section of inelastic scattering channel, with a contribution of nucleon anti-nucleon pair production arising from the Fermi statistics. The last term is calculated in frame of a simple model of nucleon-pion interaction…
We introduce the study of neutrino scattering off protons in the deeply virtual kinematics, which describes under a unified formalism elastic and deep inelastic neutrino scattering. A real final state photon and a recoiling nucleon are detected in the few GeV ($|t|\sim 0.2-5$ GeV) region of momentum transfer. This is performed via an extension of the notion of deeply virtual Compton scattering, or DVCS, to the case of a neutral current exchange. The relevance of this process and of other similar exclusive processes for the study of neutrino interactions in neutrino factories for GeV neutrinos …
Deep-inelastic scattering at low Bjorken x and elastic vector meson electroproduction are analyzed on the basis of the off-shell s-channel unitarity. We discuss behavior of the total cross-section of virtual photon-proton scattering and obtain, in particular, that the exponent in the power-like dependence of $σ^{tot}_{γ^* p}$ is related to the interaction radius of a constituent quark. The explicit mass dependence of the exponent in the power energy behavior of the vector meson electroproduction has been obtained. Angular distributions at large momentum transfers are considered. The energy dep…
We analyse the dissociation of a photon in diffractive deep inelastic scattering in the kinematic regime where the diffractive mass is much bigger than the photon virtuality. We consider the dominant q\bar{q}g component keeping track of the transverse momentum of the gluon which can be measured as a final-state jet. We show that the diffractive gluon-jet production cross-section is strongly sensitive to unitarity constraints. In particular, in a model with parton saturation, this cross-section is sensitive to the scale at which unitarity effects become important, the saturation scale. We argue…
An interpretation of the beam spin azimuthal asymmetries measured at JLAB in deep exclusive electroproduction of charged and neutral pions is presented. The model combines a Regge pole approach with the effect of nucleon resonances. The $s$- and $u$-channel contributions are described using a dual Bloom-Gilman connection between the exclusive form factors and inclusive deep inelastic structure functions. The results are in agreement with data provided the excitations of nucleon resonances are taken into account.
A model for total cross sections with virtual photons is presented. In particular gamma*-p and gamma*-gamma* cross sections are considered. Our approach extends on a model for photoproduction, where the total cross section is subdivided into three distinct event classes: direct, VMD and anomalous. With increasing photon virtuality, the latter two decrease in importance. Instead Deep Inelastic Scattering dominates, with the direct class being the O(alpha_s) correction thereof. Hence, the model provides a smooth transition between the two regions. By the breakdown into different event classes, o…
Instead of starting from a theoretically motivated form of the color dipole cross section in the dipole picture of deep inelastic scattering, we start with a parametrization of the deep inelastic structure function for electromagnetic scattering with protons, and then extract the color dipole cross section. Using the parametrizations of $F_2(ξ=x \ {\rm or}\ W^2,Q^2)$ by Donnachie-Landshoff and Block et al., we find the dipole cross section from an approximate form of the presumed dipole cross section convoluted with the perturbative photon wave function for virtual photon splitting into a colo…
For gauge theories which admit a dual string description, we analyze deep inelastic scattering at strong 't Hooft coupling and high energy, in the vicinity of the unitarity limit. We discuss the onset of unitarity corrections and determine the saturation line which separates weak scattering from strong scattering in the parameter space of rapidity and photon virtuality. We discover that the approach towards unitarity proceeds through two different mechanisms, depending upon the photon virtuality Q^2 : single Pomeron exchange at relatively low Q^2 and, respectively, multiple graviton exchanges …
We study ep deep inelastic scattering and the inclusive production of prompt photon within the framework of the quasi-multi-Regge-kinematic approach, applying the quark Reggeization hypothesis. We describe structure functions F_2 and F_L supposing that a virtual photon scatters on a Reggeized quark from a proton, via the effective gamma-Reggeon-quark vertex. It is shown that the main mechanism of the inclusive prompt photon production in p \bar p collisions is the fusion of a Reggeized quark and a Reggeized antiquark into a photon, via the effective Regeon-Reggeon-gamma vertex. We describe the…
