A model for the $p(e,e'π^+)n$ reaction which combines an improved treatment of gauge invariant meson--exchange currents and hard deep--inelastic scattering (DIS) of virtual photons off nucleons is proposed. It is shown that DIS dominates and explains the transverse response at moderate and high photon virtualities $Q^2$ whereas the longitudinal response is dominated by hadronic degrees of freedom and the pion electromagnetic form factor. This leads to a combined description of the longitudinal and transverse components of the cross section in a wide range of photon virtuality $Q^2$ and momentum transfer to the target $t$ and solves the longstanding problem of the observed large transverse cross sections. The latter are shown to be sensitive to the intrinsic transverse momentum distribution of partons.
A brief review on the status of unpolarized parton densities and the determination of the QCD scale $Λ_{\rm QCD}$ from deep-inelastic scattering data is presented.
In deeply inelastic lepton-nucleus scattering (DIS), the average jet transverse momentum is broadened because of the multiple scattering in the nuclear medium. The size of jet broadening is proportional to the multi-parton correlation functions inside nuclei. We show that at leading order, jet broadening in DIS and nulcear enhancement in di-jet momentum imbalance and Drell-Yan $< q_T^2 > $ share the same four-parton correlation functions. We argue that jet broadening in DIS provide an indenpendent measurement of the four-parton correlation functions and a test of QCD treatment of multiple scat…
We present the first study of the QCD corrections to the color-singlet (CS) $J/ψ$ production in deeply inelastic $ep$ scattering at HERA. The $K$-factor ranges from $0.85$ to $2.38$ in the kinematic regions we study. In low transverse momentum regions, the $K$-factors is even smaller, and close to 1, which indicates good convergence of the perturbative expansion. With the QCD corrections, the CS cross section is still below the data. At least at QCD next-to-leading order, the color-octet mechanism is necessary to describe the data.
We calculate the multiple scattering effect on single hadron production in semi-inclusive lepton-nucleus deeply inelastic scattering. We show that the quantum interference of multiple scattering amplitudes leads to suppression in hadron productions. At the leading power in medium length, the suppression can be approximately expressed in terms of a shift in $z$ of the fragmentation function $D(z)$, and could be therefore interpreted as the collisional energy loss. We compare our calculation with existing experimental data. We also discuss the effect of quark mass on the suppression. Our approac…
We investigate a simplified version of the ACOT prescription for calculating deeply inelastic scattering from Q^2 values near the squared mass M_H^2 of a heavy quark to Q^2 much larger than M_H^2.
Motivated by recently observed tension between $O\left(α_s^2\right)$ calculations of very large transverse momentum dependence in both semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering and Drell-Yan scattering, we repeat the details of the calculation through $O\left(α_s^2\right)$ transversely differential cross section. The results confirm earlier calculations, and provide further support to the observation that tension exists with current parton distribution and fragmentation functions.
We give an overview of jet physics in deeply inelastic scattering at HERA. The problem of jet definitions, the scale dependence of jet cross sections and some applications are discussed. (Talk presented at the Workshop on Deeply Inelastic Scattering and QCD, Paris, April 1995. To appear in the proceedings.)
Exclusive vector meson production and deeply virtual Compton scattering are ideally suited reactions for studying the structure of the proton and the transition from soft to hard processes. The main experimental data obtained at HERA are summarised and presented in the light of QCD approaches.
The nucleon structure functions probed in deep-inelastic scattering at large virtualities form an important tool to test Quantum Chromdynamics (QCD) through precision measurements of the strong coupling constant $α_s(M_Z^2)$ and the different parton distribution functions. The exact knowledge of these quantities is also of importance for all precision measurements at hadron colliders. During the last two decades very significant progress has been made in performing precision calculations. We review the theoretical status reached for both unpolarized and polarized lepton-hadron scattering based…
Modified quark fragmentation functions in deeply inelastic $eA$ collisions and their QCD evolution equations are derived for the first time in the framework of multiple parton scattering. Induced radiation gives rise to additional terms in the evolution equations and thus softens the modified quark fragmentation functions. The results in the next-leading-twist depend on both diagonal and off-diagonal twist-four parton distributions and the combination of which clearly manifests the LPM interference pattern. The predicted modification depends quadratically on the nuclear size ($A^{2/3}$). Gener…
We argue that the difference between the structure functions corresponding to deep inelastic scattering with and without heavy quarks in the current fragmentation region scales at high Q^2 and fixed (low) x.
We use a generalization of the Rosenbluth separation method for a model independent simultaneous extraction of the Compton Form Factors ${\cal H}$ and ${\cal E}$, from virtual Compton scattering data on an unpolarized target. A precise evaluation of ${\cal H}$ and ${\cal E}$, enabled by the proposed method, is the first step towards pinning down the the distribution of angular momentum inside the proton.
The Sivers function is extracted from HERMES data on single spin asymmetries in semi-inclusive deeply inelastic scattering. The result is used for making predictions for the Sivers effect in the Drell-Yan process.
Within the framework of the generalized factorization in pQCD, we investigate the multiple parton scattering and induced parton energy loss at twist-6 in deeply inelastic e-A scattering with the helicity amplitude approximation. It is shown that twist-6 processes will give rise to additional nuclear size dependence of the parton energy loss due to LPM interference effect while its contribution is power suppressed.
We calculate the logarithmic contributions to the massive Wilson coefficients for deep-inelastic scattering in the asymptotic region $Q^2 \gg m^2$ to 3-loop order in the fixed-flavor number scheme and present the corresponding expressions for the massive operator matrix elements needed in the variable flavor number scheme. Explicit expressions are given both in Mellin-$N$ space and $z$-space.
Recently dispersion relations have been applied to hard exclusive processes such as deeply virtual Compton scattering, and a holographic principle was proposed that maps out the generalized parton distributions entering the soft matrix elements for the processes from their values on a given kinematical ridge. We examine possible pitfalls associated with the implicit, direct identification in this approach of the physical hadronic states with colored partons, and suggest an improved treatment of this assumption.
Diffractive deeply inelastic scattering from a hadron is described in terms of diffractive quark and gluon distributions. If the transverse size of the hadronic state is sufficiently small, these distributions are calculable using perturbation theory. We present such a calculation and discuss the underlying dynamics. We comment on the relation between this dynamics and the pattern of scaling violation observed in the hard diffraction of large-size states at HERA.
The status of the calculation of next-to-leading-order QCD corrections to hadronic final states in deeply inelastic scattering is reviewed, and an overview of the phenomenology (including the measurement of the strong coupling constant and the gluon density via jet rates) is given. We also describe a new universal program (DISASTER++) for the calculation of (2+1)-jet observables.
Neutrino scattering on nucleons in the regime of deeply virtual kinematics is studied both in the charged and the neutral electroweak sectors using a formalism developed by Blumlein, Robaschik, Geyer and Collaborators for the analysis of the Virtual Compton amplitude in the generalized Bjorken region. We discuss the structure of the leading twist amplitudes of the process.
We suggest a simple physical picture for the diffractive parton distributions that appear in diffractive deeply inelastic scattering. In this picture, partons impinging on the proton can have any transverse separation, but only when the separation is small can they penetrate the proton without breaking it up. By comparing the predictions from this picture with the diffractive data from HERA, we determine rough values for the small separations that dominate the diffraction process.
A next-to-leading order Monte Carlo program for the calculation of heavy quark cross sections in deeply inelastic scattering is described. Concentrating on charm quark and D^*(2010) production at HERA, several distributions are presented and their variation with respect to charm quark mass, parton distribution set, and renormalization-factorization scale is studied.
The quantum field theoretic treatment of inclusive deep--inelastic diffractive scattering given in a previous paper \cite{BGR2006} is discussed in detail using an equivalent formulation with the aim to derive a representation suitable for data analysis. We consider the off-cone twist--2 light-cone operators to derive the target mass and finite $t$ corrections to diffractive deep--inelastic scattering and deep--inelastic scattering. The corrections turn out to be at most proportional to $x |t|/Q^2, x M^2/Q^2, x = x_{\rm BJ} {\rm or} x_\PP$, which suggests an expansion in these parameters. Their…
We survey the current phenomenological status of semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering at moderate hard scales and in the limit of very large transverse momentum. As the transverse momentum becomes comparable to or larger than the overall hard scale, the differential cross sections should be calculable with fixed order pQCD methods, while small transverse momentum (TMD factorization) approximations should eventually break down. We find large disagreement between HERMES and COMPASS data and fixed order calculations done with modern parton densities, even in regions of kinematics where such c…
The Sivers function is extracted from HERMES data on single spin asymmetries in semi-inclusive deeply inelastic scattering. Our analysis use a simple Gaussian model for the distribution of transverse parton momenta, together with the flavor dependence given by the leading 1/Nc approximation and a neglect of the Sivers antiquark distribution. We find that within the errors of the data these approximations are sufficient.
In this talk we present the first calculation of the gluon structure function for nucleus in QCD. We discuss the Glauber formula for the gluon structure function and the violation of this simple approach that we anticipate in QCD. (Talk given by E. Levin at QCD and nuclear target session at the Workshop on Deep Inelastic Scattering and QCD, Paris, April 1995).
The goal of the comprehensive program in Deeply Virtual Exclusive Scattering at Jefferson Laboratory is to create transverse spatial images of quarks and gluons as a function of their longitudinal momentum fraction in the proton, the neutron, and in nuclei. These functions are the Generalized Parton Distributions (GPDs) of the target nucleus. Cross section measurements of the Deeply Virtual Compton Scattering (DVCS) reaction {ep -> ep γ} in Hall A support the QCD factorization of the scattering amplitude for Q^2 > 2 GeV^2. Quasi-free neutron-DVCS measurements on the Deuteron indicate sensitivi…
Heavy flavours production in e-p DIS is studied at intermediate values of the transferred four-momentum square, under the assumption of boson-gluon-fusion mechanism dominance (no intrinsic heavy flavours contributions). In this framework different expressions for the splitting functions in the gluon density evolution equation, with respect to the standard (DGLAP) ones, are explicitly derived.
We extend the calculations of the spin alignments of vector mesons in $e^+e^-$ annihilation in a recent Rapid Communication to deeply inelastic lepton-nucleon scatterings. We present the results for different mesons in the current fragmentation regions of $μ^- N$$ \to$$ μ^- VX$ at high energies and $ν_μN $$\to$$ μ^- VX$ at both high and low energies. We also present the predictions for $ν_μN$$ \to$$ μ^- VX$ at NOMAD energies in the target fragmentation region using a valence quark model.
We provide a universal expression of cross sections for the exclusive vector meson production and Deeply Virtual Compton Scattering (DVCS) in photon-proton and photon-nucleus interactions based on the geometric scaling phenomenon. The theoretical parameterization based on the scaling property depends only on the single variable $τ_A = Q^2/Q_{\mathrm{sat}}^2$, where the saturation scale, $Q_{\mathrm{sat}}$, drives the energy dependence and the corresponding nuclear effects. This phenomenological result describes all available data from DESY-HERA for $ρ,\,ϕ,\,J/ψ$ production and DVCS measurement…
The prospects for a determination of the strong coupling constant $α_s$ via scaling violations of fragmentation functions in deeply inelastic scattering are studied. The statistical error in the case of an integrated luminosity of $250 pb^{-1}$, and the theoretical errors due to the various parton density parametrizations and to the factorization scale dependence are estimated.
Effective field theories have often been applied to systems with deeply inelastic reactions that produce particles with large momenta outside the domain of validity of the effective theory. The effects of the deeply inelastic reactions have been taken into account in previous work by adding local anti-Hermitian terms to the effective Hamiltonian. Here we show that when multi-particle systems are considered, an additional modification is required in equations governing the density matrix. We define an effective density matrix by tracing over the states containing high-momentum particles, and sh…
Measurement of the distribution of hadronic energy in the final state in deeply inelastic electron scattering at HERA can provide a good test of our understanding of perturbative QCD. For this purpose, we consider the energy distribution function, which can be computed without needing final state parton fragmentation functions. We compute this distribution function for finite transverse momentum q_T at order alpha_s, and use the results to sum the perturbation series to obtain a result valid for both large and small values of transverse momentum.
The impact of nonlinear effects in the diffractive observables that will be measured in future electron-ion collisions is investigated. We present, for the first time, the predictions for the diffractive structure function and reduced cross sections derived using the solution to the Balitsky--Kovchegov equation with the collinearly-improved kernel and including the impact-parameter dependence. We demonstrate that the contribution of the diffractive events is enhanced in nuclear collisions and that the study of the ratio between the nuclear and proton predictions will be useful to discriminate …
We develop a framework to establish benchmarks for machine learning and deep neural networks analyses of exclusive scattering cross sections (FemtoNet). Within this framework we present an extraction of Compton form factors for deeply virtual Compton scattering from an unpolarized proton target. Critical to this effort is a study of the effects of physics constraint built into machine learning (ML) algorithms. We use the Bethe-Heitler process, which is the QED radiative background to deeply virtual Compton scattering, to test our ML models and, in particular, their ability to generalize inform…
We present a compact form of the leptonic currents for the computation of the processes involving an initial virtual boson (photon, $W^{\pm}$ or $Z_0$). For deeply inelastic scattering, once the azimuthal angle of the plane expanded by the initial- and final-state leptons are integrated over in the boson-proton rest frame, the azimuthal-asymmetric terms vanish, which, however, is NOT true when some physical quantities (such as the transverse momentum of the observed particle) are specified in laboratory frame. The abuse of the symmetry may lead to wrong results.
The Collins fragmentation function is extracted from HERMES data on azimuthal single spin asymmetries in semi-inclusive deeply inelastic scattering, and BELLE data on azimuthal asymmetries in electron positron annihilations. A Gaussian model is assumed for the distribution of transverse parton momenta and predictions are used from the chiral quark-soliton model for the transversity distribution function. We find that the HERMES and BELLE data yield a consistent picture of the Collins fragmentation function which is compatible with COMPASS data and the information previously obtained from an an…
The prospects of a direct extraction of the proton's gluon density in next-to-leading order via jet rates in deeply inelastic scattering are studied. The employed method is based on the Mellin transform, and can be applied, in principle, to all infra-red-safe observables of hadronic final states. We investigate the dependence of the error band on the extracted gluon distribution on the statistical and systematic error of the data.
Different kinematical regimes of semi-inclusive deeply inelastic scattering (SIDIS) processes correspond to different underlying partonic pictures, and it is important to understand the transition between them. This is particularly the case when there is sensitivity to intrinsic transverse momentum, in which case kinematical details can become especially important. We address the question of how to identify the current fragmentation region --- the kinematical regime where a factorization picture with fragmentation functions is appropriate. We distinguish this from soft and target fragmentation…
We calculate the polarizations for different octet hyperons produced in the current fragmentation regions of the deeply inelastic lepton-nucleon scatterings $μ^-N \to μ^- HX$ and $ν_μ N \to μ^- HX$ at high energy using different models for spin transfer in fragmentation processes. The results show that measurements of those hyperon polarizations should provide useful information to distinguish between different models in particular the SU(6) and the DIS pictures used frequently in the literature. We found, in particular, that measuring the polarization of $Σ^+$ produced in these processes can …
We present a systematic calculation of the charged current semi-inclusive deeply inelastic scattering process at leading order twist-3 level in the parton model. We consider the general form of the negatively charged beam scattering off the polarized target which has spin-1. The calculations are carried out by applying the collinear expansion where multiple gluon scattering is taken into account and gauge links are obtained automatically. We first present the general form of the differential cross section in terms of the structure functions by kinematic analysis and then present the structure …
We compare recent experimental results for one-particle-inclusive processes in deeply inelastic scattering at HERA with theoretical predictions in next-to-leading-order QCD perturbation theory, and study the factorization scale dependence of cross sections and charged multiplicities. In the future, for the HERA machine running at design luminosity, scaling violations of fragmentation functions permit the measurement of the strong coupling constant. We estimate the size of the statistical error of $α_s$ that can be achieved, and study the theoretical error due to the various parton density para…
In the framework of the collinear factorized pQCD approach we calculate the small-$x_B$ process-dependent nuclear modification to the structure functions measured in neutrino-nucleus deeply inelastic scattering. We include both heavy quark mass corrections $(M^2/Q^2)$ and resummed nuclear-enhanced dynamical power corrections in the quantity $(ξ^2/Q^2)(A^{1/3}-1)$ with $ξ^2$ evaluated to leading order in $α_s$. Our formalism predicts a measurable difference in the shadowing pattern of the structure functions $F_2^A(x_B,Q^2)$ and $F_3^A(x_B,Q^2)$ and a significant low- and moderate-$Q^2$ modific…
We calculate the neutral current jet production semi-inclusive deeply inelastic scattering process in this paper. Neutral current implies that interactions can be mediated by the photon, $Z^0$-boson and their interference. The initial electron is assumed to be polarized and then scattered off by a target particle with spin-1/2. Calculations are carried out up to twist-3 level in the quantum chromodynamics parton model by applying the collinear expansion formalism where multiple gluon scattering is taken into account and gauge links are obtained automatically. After obtaining the differential c…
A Pomeron model applicable to both "`soft" and "hard" processes is suggested and tested against the high-energy data from virtual photon-induced reactions. The Pomeron is universal, containing two terms, a "soft" and a "hard" one, whose relative weight varies with $\widetilde {Q^2}=Q^2+M_V^2$, where $Q^2$ is the virtuality of the incoming photon and $M_V$ is the mass of the produced vector particle. With a small number of adjustable parameters, the model fits all available data on vector meson production and deeply virtual Compton scattering from HERA. Furthermore, we attempt to apply the mode…
Intrinsic transverse parton momenta pT play an important role in the understanding of azimuthal/spin asymmetries in semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering (SIDIS) and the Drell-Yan process (DY). We review and update what is presently known about pT from these processes. In particular, we address the question to which extent data support the popular Gauss model for the pT-distributions. We find that the Gauss model works very well, and observe that the intrinsic transverse momenta in SIDIS and DY are compatible, which is a support for the factorization approach. As a byproduct we recover a si…
Recently we have shown that exclusive QCD photon-induced reactions at low Mandelstam-t are best described by Regge exchanges in the entire scaling region, and not only for low values of Bjorken-x. In this paper we explore this crucial Regge behavior in Deeply Virtual Compton Scattering from the point of view of collinear factorization, with the proton tensor written in terms of Generalized Parton Distributions, and we reproduce this feature. Thus it appears that in the Bjorken limit, a large class of hard, low-t exclusive processes are more sensitive to the meson cloud of the proton than to it…
In the asymptotic limit $Q^2 \gg m^2$, the heavy flavor Wilson coefficients for deep--inelastic scattering factorize into the massless Wilson coefficients and the universal heavy flavor operator matrix elements resulting from light--cone expansion. In this way, one can calculate all but the power corrections in $(m^2/Q^2)^k, k > 0$. The heavy flavor operator matrix elements are known to ${\sf NLO}$. We present the last 2--loop result missing in the unpolarized case for the renormalization at 3--loops and first 3--loop results for terms proportional to the color factor $T_F^2$ in Mellin--space.…
We extract parton distribution functions (PDFs) and structure functions from recent experimental data of polarized lepton-DIS on nucleons at next-to-leading order (NLO) Quantum Chromodynamics. We apply the Jacobi polynomial method to the DGLAP evolution as this is numerically efficient. Having determined the polarized proton and neutron spin structure, we extend this analysis to describe 3He and 3H polarized structure functions, as well as various sum rules. We compare our results with other analyses from the literature.
We calculate azimuthal asymmetries and the Callan-Gross $R$-ratio for semi-exclusive pion production in deep inelastic scattering taking into account higher twist effects. Our results are qualitatively different from the QCD-improved parton model predictions for semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering.
We propose to investigate a largely unexplored sector that is unique to the formulation of hard exclusive processes in terms of GPDs, namely the electroproduction of strange and charmed mesons in the kinematical ranges of Jefferson Lab's 12 GeV upgrade, and of the proposed Electron Ion Collider (EIC). In this contribution we focus on charmed meson production that is unique to the EIC. Exclusive strange and charmed meson production provides new insights in the connection of the quark/gluon degrees of freedom with the meson-baryon description, both in the unpolarized and polarized sectors. Howev…
Recent measurements from Jefferson Lab show significant beam single spin asymmetries in deep inelastic scattering. The asymmetry is due to interference of longitudinal and transverse photoabsorption amplitudes which have different phases induced by the final-state interaction between the struck quark and the target spectators. We developed a dynamical model for a single-spin beam asymmetry in deep-inelastic scattering. Our results are consistent with the experimentally observed magnitude of this effect. We conclude that similar mechanisms involving quark orbital angular momentum (`Sivers effec…
We compute the logarithmic contributions to the polarized massive Wilson coefficients for deep-inelastic scattering in the asymptotic region $Q^2 \gg m^2$ to 3-loop order in the fixed-flavor number scheme and present the corresponding expressions for the polarized massive operator matrix elements needed in the variable flavor number scheme. The calculation is performed in the Larin scheme. For the massive operator matrix elements $A_{qq,Q}^{(3),\rm PS}$ and $A_{qg,Q}^{(3),\rm S}$ the complete results are presented. The expressions are given in Mellin-$N$ space and in momentum fraction $z$-spac…
We outline a strategy to compute deeply inelastic scattering structure functions using a hybrid quantum computer. Our approach takes advantage of the representation of the fermion determinant in the QCD path integral as a quantum mechanical path integral over 0+1-dimensional fermionic and bosonic worldlines. The proper time evolution of these worldlines can be determined on a quantum computer. While extremely challenging in general, the problem simplifies in the Regge limit of QCD, where the interaction of the worldlines with gauge fields is strongly localized in proper time and the correspond…
A Reggeometric (Regge+Geometry) model, based on the observed proportionality between the forward slope of the differential cross section and the interaction radius, the latter depending on virtuality Q2 of the incoming virtual photon and on the mass M 2 of the produced particle, is constructed. The objective of this study is the dependence of the Regge-pole amplitude on the virtuality Q2 and masses of the external particles, which remains an open problem for the theory. The present analysis is based on the HERA data on Deeply Virtual Compton Scattering (DVCS) and exclusive diffractive Vector M…
In this work, we investigate the exclusive production of particles in scattering processes in the so-called saturation region. Within this scheme the phenomenon of geometric scaling takes place: cross sections are functions only of a dimensionless combination of the relevant kinematic variables, which happens both in inclusive and diffractive cases, as in the production of vector mesons. In particular, the scaling variable is given in general by $τ= Q^2/Q_s^2$, where $Q^2$ is the photon virtuality and $Q_s$ represents the saturation scale, which drives the energy dependence and the correspondi…
