This is a two - part paper, in which we prove the following fact: let K be a CM field and L/K be a CM Z_p-extension. Then the Iwasawa mu-invariant of L vanishes. For the case when L is the cyclotomic Z_p extension, this is the Iwasawa conjecture stating that mu = 0 - a fact which had been proven for abelian fields by Ferrero and Washington. If L is not cyclotomic, than the Leopoldt conjecture fails for K. In this case we show that there is some auxiliar CM Z_p-extension for which mu does not vanish. This is a contradiction, showing that the Leopoldt conjecture must hold for CM fields. Concerning the ideas of the proof, they use class field theory and a concept of stability of Lambda modules under deformation by Thaine shifts, which is developed explicitly in the papers.
This combined paper makes obsolete earlier versions and attempts to prove parts of this result, which are found on this arxiv.
In this paper we give a bound for the Iwasawa lambda invariant of an abelian number field attached to the cyclotomic Z_p-extension of that field. We also give some properties of Iwaswa power series attached to p-adic L-functions.
Let $K = \mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{-q})$, where $q$ is any prime number congruent to $7$ modulo $8$, and let $\mathcal{O}$ be the ring of integers of $K$. The prime $2$ splits in $K$, say $2\mathcal{O} = \mathfrak{p} \mathfrak{p}^\ast$, and there is a unique $\mathbb{Z}_2$-extension $K_\infty$ of $K$, which is unramified outside $\mathfrak{p}$. Let $H$ be the Hilbert class field of $K$, and write $H_\infty = HK_\infty$. Let $M(H_\infty)$ be the maximal abelian $2$-extension of $H_\infty$, which is unramified outside the primes above $\mathfrak{p}$, and put $X(H_\infty) = \mathrm{Gal}(M(H_\infty)/H_\inf…
The conjecture of Leopoldt states that the $p$ - adic regulator of a number field does not vanish. It was proved for the abelian case in 1967 by Brumer, using Baker theory. A conjecture, due to Gross and Kuz'min will be shown here to be in a deeper sense a dual of Leopoldt's conjecture with respect to the Iwasawa involution. We prove both conjectures for arbitrary number fields $\K$. The main ingredients of the proof are the Leopoldt reflection, the structure of quasi - cyclic $\Z_p[ \Gal(\K/\Q) ]$ - modules of some of the most important $Λ[ \Gal(\K/\Q) ]$ - modules occurring ($T$ acts on them…
The conjecture of Leopoldt states that the $p$ - adic regulator of a number field does not vanish. It was proved for the abelian case in 1967 by Brumer, using Baker theory. We prove this conjecture for CM number fields $\K$. The proof uses Iwasawa's methods -- especially Takagi Theory -- for deriving his skew symmetric pairing, together with Kummer- and Class Field Theory.
We use $\ell$-adic class field theory to take a new view on cyclotomic norms and Leopoldt or Gross generalized conjectures. By the way we recall and complete some classical results. We illustrate the logarithmic approach by various numerical examples and counter-examples obtained with PARI.
The Leopoldt conjecture is concerned with the image of the global units in the local units at the primes dividing p. In the definition of the global units the infinite place is distinguished. Exchanging p and infinity in the formulation one gets a new conjecture. It predicts that certain vectors should be linearly independent over the reals whose components are arguments of conjugates of Weil numbers. Using Baker's result on linear forms in logarithms we prove part of this new conjecture in certain abelian situations.
Inspired by Warren Sinnott 's method we prove a linear independence result modulo p for the Iwasawa power series associated to Kubota-Leopoldt p-adic L-functions.
The p-adic Kummer--Leopoldt constant kappa\_K of a number field K is (assuming the Leopoldt conjecture) the least integer c such that for all n \textgreater{}\textgreater{} 0, any global unit of K, which is locally a p^(n+c)th power at the p-places, is necessarily the p^nth power of a global unit of K. This constant has been computed by Assim \& Nguyen Quang Do using Iwasawa's techniques, after intricate studies and calculations by many authors. We give an elementary p-adic proof and an improvement of these results, then a class field theory interpretation of kappa\_K. We give some applications…
We study in this paper Hida's p-adic Hecke algebra for GL_n over a CM field F. Hida has made a conjecture about the dimension of these Hecke algebras, which he calls the non-abelian Leopoldt conjecture, and shown that his conjecture in the case of F being the rationals implies the classical Leopoldt conjecture for a number field K of degree n over the rationals, if one assumes further the existence of automorphic induction of characters for the extension K over the rationals. We study Hida's conjecture using the automorphy lifting techniques adapted to the GL_n setting by Calegari--Geraghty. W…
In this paper we give a short, elementary proof of the following too extreme cases of the Leopoldt conjecture: the case when $\K/\Q$ is a solvable extension and the case when it is a totally real extension in which $p$ splits completely. The first proof uses Baker theory, the second class field theory. The methods used here are a sharpening of the ones presented at the SANT meeting in Göttingen, 2008 and exposed in \cite{Mi2}, \cite{Mi1}.
In Part I we review some specific properties of the $Λ$-modules in Iwasawa theory, which add structure to the general properties of Noetherian $Λ$-torsion modules. Part II deals with Kummer theory and gives a detailed construction of the Iwasawa linear space. This provides a new, simpler proof of the conjectures of Leopoldt and Gross for CM extensions. Using a construction of Thaine, we then prove that $λ^+ = 0$ in these fields, thus proving a part of Greenberg's conjecture - the fact $μ^+ = 0$ still has to be shown. In the Appendices we give some elementary partial proofs of the main facts pr…
The central result of this paper is a refinement of Hida's duality theorem between ordinary Lambda-adic modular forms and the universal ordinary Hecke algebra. Specifically, we give a necessary condition for this duality to be integral with respect to particular submodules of the space ordinary Lambda-adic modular forms. This refinement allows us to give a simple proof that the universal ordinary cuspidal Hecke algebra modulo Eisenstein ideal is isomorphic to the Iwasawa algebra modulo an ideal related to the Kubota-Leopoldt p-adic L-function. The motivation behind these results stems from Oht…
We consider questions in Galois cohomology which arise by considering mod $p$ Galois representations arising from automorphic forms. We consider a Galois cohomological analog for the standard heuristics about the distribution of Wieferich primes, i.e. prime $p$ such that $2^{p-1}$ is 1 mod $p^2$. Our analog relates to asking if in a compatible system of Galois representations, for almost all primes $p$, the residual mod $p$ representation arising from it has unobstructed deformation theory. This analog leads in particular to formulating a mod $p$ analog for almost all primes $p$ of the classic…
Leopoldt's Conjecture is a statement about the relationship between the global and local units of a number field. Approximately the conjecture states that the Z_p-rank of the diagonal embedding of the global units into the product of all local units equals the Z-rank of the global units. The variation we consider asks: Can we say anything about the Z_p-rank of the diagonal embedding of the global units into the product of some local units? We use the p-adic Schanuel Conjecture to answer the question in the affirmative and moreover we give a value for the Z_p-rank (of the diagonal embedding of …
Let $A$ be an abelian variety defined over a number field $F$ with supersingular reduction at all primes of $F$ above $p$. We establish an equivalence between the weak Leopoldt conjecture and the expected value of the corank of the classical Selmer group of $A$ over a $p$-adic Lie extension (not neccesasily containing the cyclotomic $\Zp$-extension). As an application, we obtain the exactness of the defining sequence of the Selmer group. In the event that the $p$-adic Lie extension is one-dimensional, we show that the dual Selmer group has no nontrivial finite submodules. Finally, we show that…
Let $K=\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{-q})$, where $q$ is any prime number congruent to $7$ modulo $8$, with ring of integers $\mathcal{O}$ and Hilbert class field $H$. Suppose $p\nmid [H:K]$ is a prime number which splits in $K$, say $p\mathcal{O}=\mathfrak{p}\mathfrak{p}^*$. Let $H_\infty=HK_\infty$ where $K_\infty$ is the unique $\mathbb{Z}_p$-extension of $K$ unramified outside $\mathfrak{p}$. Write $M(H_\infty)$ for the maximal abelian $p$-extension of $H_\infty$ unramified outside the primes above $\mathfrak{p}$, and set $X(H_\infty)=\mathrm{Gal}(M(H_\infty)/H_\infty)$. In this paper, we establish the…
Let p be an odd prime. We give an unconditional proof of the equivariant Iwasawa main conjecture for totally real fields for an infinite class of one-dimensional non-abelian p-adic Lie extensions. Crucially, this result does not depend on the vanishing of the relevant Iwasawa mu-invariant.
Assuming that Iwasawa's $μ_{K/k}$-invariant vanishes, we prove the 'main conjecture' of equivariant Iwasawa theory, at odd prime numbers $l$, for arbitrary extensions $K/k$ of totally real number fields, up to its uniqueness assertion.
In this paper we prove an anticyclotomic Iwasawa main conjecture proposed by Perrin-Riou for Heegner points when the global sign is -1, using a recent work of the author on one divisibility of Iwasawa-Greenberg main conjecture for Rankin-Selberg p-adic L-functions. As a byproduct we also prove the equality for the above mentioned main conjecture under some local conditions.
In this paper, we prove the Iwasawa main conjecture for elliptic curves at an odd supersingular prime p. Some consequences are the p-parts of the leading term formulas in the Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer conjectures for analytic rank 0 or 1.
We prove the Iwasawa main conjecture over the arithmetic $\mathbb{Z}_p$-extension for semistable abelian varieties over function fields of characteristic $p>0$.
We investigate a question of Burns and Sano concerning the structure of the module of Euler systems for a general $p$-adic representation. Assuming the weak Leopoldt conjecture, and the vanishing of $μ$-invariants of natural Iwasawa modules, we obtain an Iwasawa-theoretic classification criterion for Euler systems which can be used to study this module. This criterion, taken together with Coleman's conjecture on circular distributions, leads us to pose a refinement of the aforementioned question for which we provide strong, and unconditional, evidence. We furthermore answer this question in th…
Let $p>2$ be a prime. Under mild assumptions, we prove the Iwasawa main conjecture of Kato, for modular forms with general weight and conductor prime to $p$.
We study a geometric analogue of the Iwasawa Main Conjecture for constant ordinary abelian varieties over $\ZZ_p^d$-extensions of function fields ramifying at a finite set of places.
In this article, we study the Iwasawa theory for Hilbert modular forms over the anticyclotomic extension of a CM field. We prove a one sided divisibility result toward the Iwasawa main conjecture. The proof relies on the first and second reciprocity law relating theta elements to Heegner points Euler system. As a by-product we also prove certain Bloch-Kato type result in the rank $0$ case and a parity conjecture
We will show a conjecture which reduces Mazur-Tate-Teitelbaum conjecture to the known cases. In order to explain its background we will develop an archimedian analog of Iwasawa theory. Moreover consequences of the conjecture which are related to Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer conjecture will be discussed.
We prove a `Weierstrass Preparation Theorem' and develop an explicit descent formalism in the context of Whitehead groups of non-commutative Iwasawa algebras. We use these results to describe the precise connection between the main conjecture of non-commutative Iwasawa theory (in the sense of Coates, Fukaya, Kato, Sujatha and Venjakob) and the equivariant Tamagawa number conjecture. The latter result is both a converse to a theorem of Fukaya and Kato and also provides an important means of deriving explicit consequences of the main conjecture.
In 2005 Coates, Fukaya, Kato, Sujatha, and Venjakob formulated a noncommutative Iwasawa main conjecture for l-adic Lie extensions of number fields. To provide evidence for this main conjecture we formulate and prove an analogous statement for l-adic Lie extensions of separated schemes of finite type over a finite field of characteristic prime to l.
We deduce the cyclotomic Iwasawa main conjecture for Hilbert modular cuspforms with complex multiplication from the multivariable main conjecture for CM number fields. To this end, we study in detail the behaviour of the $p$-adic $L$-functions and the Selmer groups attached to CM number fields under specialisation procedures.
Let $p$ be an odd prime. We prove the cyclotomic Iwasawa Main Conjecture of K.Kato for the motive attached to an eigencuspform $f\in S_{k}(Γ_{0}(N))$ with arbitrary reduction type at $p$ under mild assumptions on the residual Galois representation $\barρ_{f}$. Under the same hypotheses, we also prove the generalized Iwasawa Main Conjecture for $p$-adic families of modular forms. The Iwasawa Main Conjecture for $f$ is deduced by a limit argument involving fundamental lines from a universal Iwasawa Main Conjecture over the universal deformation space of $\barρ_{f}$, which itself follows from the…
We show that for an odd prime p, the p-primary parts of refinements of the (imprimitive) non-abelian Brumer and Brumer-Stark conjectures are implied by the equivariant Iwasawa main conjecture (EIMC) for totally real fields. Crucially, this result does not depend on the vanishing of the relevant Iwasawa mu-invariant. In combination with the authors' previous work on the EIMC, this leads to unconditional proofs of the non-abelian Brumer and Brumer-Stark conjectures in many new cases.
We construct a new class of Iwasawa modules, which are the number field analogues of the p-adic realizations of the Picard 1-motives constructed by Deligne in the 1970s and studied extensively from a Galois module structure point of view in our recent work. We prove that the new Iwasawa modules are of projective dimension 1 over the appropriate profinite group rings. In the abelian case, we prove an Equivariant Main Conjecture, identifying the first Fitting ideal of the Iwasawa module in question over the appropriate profinite group ring with the principal ideal generated by a certain equivari…
In this article, we discuss Iwasawa Main Conjecture for $p$-adic families of elliptic modular cuspforms. After the overview on the situation of the ordinary case of Hida family, we will introduce a Coleman map for Coleman family for the non-ordinary case (Coleman family) which was obtained as a joint work with Filippo Nuccio [NO16] and we give some results on Iwasawa Theory for Coleman families as applications of . First, we give a construction of a two-variable $p$-adic $L$-function for a Coleman family thanks to the ingredients given in [NO16] (Theorem 5.1). Combining this result and Coleman…
We discuss three different formulations of the equivariant Iwasawa main conjecture attached to an extension K/k of totally real fields with Galois group G, where k is a number field and G is a p-adic Lie group of dimension 1 for an odd prime p. All these formulations are equivalent and hold if Iwasawa's μ-invariant vanishes. Under mild hypotheses, we use this to prove non-abelian generalizations of Brumer's conjecture, the Brumer-Stark conjecture and a strong version of the Coates-Sinnott conjecture provided that μ= 0.
In this paper we propose and prove an anticyclotomic Iwasawa main conjecture for Heegner points on supersingular elliptic curves with $a_p=0$. The result has a "$\pm$" nature in the sense of Kobayashi. The proof uses a recent work of the second author on one divisibility in the Iwasawa--Greenberg main conjecture for Rankin-Selberg $p$-adic $L$-functions, together with an argument of Howard (adapted to our "$\pm$"-situation). As a byproduct, we also obtain an improvement of Skinner's result on a converse to the Gross--Zagier--Kolyvagin theorem.
We prove under mild hypotheses the three-variable Iwasawa main conjecture for $p$-ordinary modular forms in the indefinite setting. Our result is in a setting complementary to that in the work of Skinner-Urban, and it has applications to Greenberg's nonvanishing conjecture for the first derivatives at the center of $p$-adic $L$-functions of cusp forms in Hida families with root number $-1$ and to Howard's horizontal nonvanishing conjecture.
We formulate and prove an analogue of the non-commutative Iwasawa Main Conjecture for $\ell$-adic representations of the Galois group of a function field of characteristic $p$. We also prove a functional equation for the resulting non-commutative $L$-functions. As corollaries, we obtain non-commutative generalisations of the main conjecture for Picard-$1$-motives of Greither and Popescu and a main conjecture for abelian varieties over function fields in precise analogy to the $\operatorname{GL}_2$ main conjecture of Coates, Fukaya, Kato, Sujatha and Venjakob.
We formulate a weak Gorenstein property for the Eisenstein component of the p-adic Hecke algebra associated to modular forms. We show that this weak Gorenstein property holds if and only if a weak form of Sharifi's conjecture and a weak form of Greenberg's conjecture hold.
We prove an Equivariant Main Conjecture in Iwasawa Theory along any rank one, sign-normalized Drinfeld modular, split at infinity Iwasawa tower of a general function field of characteristic p, for the Iwasawa modules recently considered by Greither and Popescu, in their proof of the classical Equivariant Main Conjecture along the (arithmetic) cyclotomic Iwasawa tower.
In this paper, we prove under mild hypotheses the Iwasawa main conjectures of Lei--Loeffler--Zerbes for modular forms of weight $2$ at non-ordinary primes. Our proof is based on the study of the two-variable analogues of these conjectures formulated by Büyükboduk--Lei for imaginary quadratic fields in which $p$ splits, and on anticyclotomic Iwasawa theory. As application of our results, we deduce the $p$-part of the Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer formula in analytic ranks $0$ or $1$ for abelian varieties over $\mathbb{Q}$ of ${\rm GL}_2$-type for non-ordinary primes $p>2$.
For a prime number $p$ and a number field $k$, let $\tilde{k}$ be the compositum of all $\mathbb{Z}_p$-extensions of $k$. Greenberg's Generalized Conjecture (GGC) claims the pseudo-nullity of the unramified Iwasawa module $X(\tilde{k})$ of $\tilde{k}$. It is known that, when $k$ is an imaginary quadratic field, GGC has a consequence on the Iwasawa invariants associated to $\mathbb{Z}_p$-extensions of $k$. In this paper, we partially generalize it to arbitrary number fields $k$.
Recently, D. Burns and C. Greither (Invent. Math., 2003) deduced an equivariant version of the main conjecture for abelian number fields. This was the key to their proof of the equivariant Tamagawa number conjecture. A. Huber and G. Kings (Duke Math. J., 2003) also use a variant of the Iwasawa main conjecture to prove the Tamagawa number conjecture for Dirichlet motives. We use the result of the second pair of authors and the Theorem of Ferrero-Washington to reprove the equivariant main conjecture in a slightly more general form. The main idea of the proof is essentially the same as in the pap…
In this paper we prove that the $p$-adic $L$-function that interpolates the Rankin-Selberg product of a general weight two modular form which is unramified and non-ordinary at $p$, and an ordinary CM form of higher weight contains the characteristic ideal of the corresponding Selmer group. This is one divisibility of the Iwasawa-Greenberg main conjecture for the $p$-adic $L$-function. This generalizes an earlier work of the author to the non-ordinary case. The result of this paper plays a crucial role in the proof of Iwasawa main conjecture and refined Birch-Swinnerton-Dyer formula for supersi…
We give a survey on noncommutative main conjectures of Iwasawa theory in a geometric setting, i.e. for separated schemes of finite type over a finite field, as stated and proved by Burns and the author. We will also comment briefly on versions of the main conjecture for function fields.
Let $L/K$ be a finite Galois extension of $p$-adic fields and let $L_{\infty}$ be the unramified $\mathbb Z_p$-extension of $L$. Then $L_{\infty}/K$ is a one-dimensional $p$-adic Lie extension. In the spirit of the main conjectures of equivariant Iwasawa theory, we formulate a conjecture which relates the equivariant local epsilon constants attached to the finite Galois intermediate extensions $M/K$ of $L_{\infty}/K$ to a natural arithmetic invariant arising from the étale cohomology of the constant sheaf $\mathbb Q_p/\mathbb Z_p$ on the spectrum of $L_{\infty}$. We give strong evidence of the…
Iwasawa's classical asymptotical formula relates the orders of the $p$-parts $X_n$ of the ideal class groups along a $\ZM_p$-extension $F_\infty/F$ of a number field $F$, to Iwasawa structural invariants $\la$ and $μ$ attached to the inverse limit $X_\infty=\limpro X_n$. It relies on "good" descent properties satisfied by $X_n$. If $F$ is abelian and $F_\infty$ is cyclotomic it is known that the $p$-parts of the orders of the global units modulo circular units $U_n/C_n$ are asymptotically equivalent to the $p$-parts of the ideal class numbers. This suggests that these quotients $U_n/C_n$, so t…
We establish the Iwasawa main conjecture for semi-stable abelian varieties over a function field of characteristic $p$ under certain restrictive assumptions. Namely we consider $p$-torsion free $p$-adic Lie extensions of the base field which contain the constant $\mathbb Z_p$-extension and are everywhere unramified. Under the classical $μ=0$ hypothesis we give a proof which mainly relies on the interpretation of the Selmer complex in terms of $p$-adic cohomology [TV] together with the trace formulas of [EL1].
