We propose a theorem that extends the classical Lie approach to the case of fractional partial differential equations (fPDEs) of the Riemann--Liouville type in (1+1) dimensions.
We give a geometrical characterization of $λ$-prolongations of vector fields, and hence of $λ$-symmetries of ODEs. This allows an extension to the case of PDEs and systems of PDEs; in this context the central object is a horizontal one-form $μ$, and we speak of $μ$-prolongations of vector fields and $μ$-symmetries of PDEs. We show that these are as good as standard symmetries in providing symmetry reduction of PDEs and systems, and explicit invariant solutions.
We give a geometrical interpretation of the notion of $μ$-prolongations of vector fields and of the related concept of $μ$-symmetry for partial differential equations (extending to PDEs the notion of $λ$-symmetry for ODEs). We give in particular a result concerning the relationship between $μ$-symmetries and standard exact symmetries. The notion is also extended to the case of conditional and partial symmetries, and we analyze the relation between local $μ$-symmetries and nonlocal standard symmetries.
In some cases, solutions to nonlinear PDEs happen to be asymptotically (for large $x$ and/or $t$) invariant under a group $G$ which is not a symmetry of the equation. After recalling the geometrical meaning of symmetries of differential equations -- and solution-preserving maps -- we provide a precise definition of asymptotic symmetries of PDEs; we deal in particular, for ease of discussion and physical relevance, with scaling and translation symmetries of scalar equations. We apply the general discussion to a class of ``Richardson-like'' anomalous diffusion and reaction-diffusion equations, w…
An explicit formula to find symmetry recursion operators for partial differential equations (PDEs) is obtained from new results connecting variational integrating factors and non-variational symmetries. The formula is special case of a general formula that produces a pre-symplectic operator from a non-gradient adjoint-symmetry. These formulas are illustrated by several examples of linear PDEs and integrable nonlinear PDEs. Additionally, a classification of quasilinear second-order PDEs admitting a multiplicative symmetry recursion operator through the first formula is presented.
This paper contains an analysis of rank-k solutions in terms of Riemann invariants, obtained from interrelations between two concepts, that of the symmetry reduction method and of the generalized method of characteristics for first order quasilinear hyperbolic systems of PDEs in many dimensions. A variant of the conditional symmetry method for obtaining this type of solutions is proposed. A Lie module of vector fields, which are symmetries of an overdetermined system defined by the initial system of equations and certain first order differential constraints, is constructed. It is shown that th…
One considers a special class of PDEs systems and one determines the associated symmetry group. Particulary, for the Blair system, one finds the symmetry group. A solutions of the Blair system gives a conformally flat contact metric structure and also it defines a "force-free" model of solar physics. By using the symmetry groups theory, one shows that the known solutions are group-invariant solutions and one gives new solutions.
A {\it Lie system} is a nonautonomous system of first-order differential equations admitting a {\it superposition rule}, i.e., a map expressing its general solution in terms of a generic family of particular solutions and some constants. Using that a Lie system can be considered as a curve in a finite-dimensional Lie algebra of vector fields, a so-called {\it Vessiot--Guldberg Lie algebra}, we associate every Lie system with a Lie algebra of Lie point symmetries induced by the Vessiot--Guldberg Lie algebra. This enables us to derive Lie symmetries of relevant physical systems described by firs…
We investigate the relation between pluri-Lagrangian hierarchies of $2$-dimensional partial differential equations and their variational symmetries. The aim is to generalize to the case of partial differential equations the recent findings in [Petrera, Suris. J. Nonlinear Math. Phys. 24:sup1, 121--145 (2017)] for ordinary differential equations. We consider hierarchies of $2$-dimensional Lagrangian PDEs (many of which have a natural $(1+1)$-dimensional space-time interpretation) and show that if the flow of each PDE is a variational symmetry of all others, then there exists a pluri-Lagrangian …
New definitions of $Q$-conditional symmetry for systems of PDEs are presented, which generalize the standard notation of non-classical (conditional) symmetry. It is shown that different types of $Q$-conditional symmetry of a system generate a hierarchy of conditional symmetry operators. A class of two-component nonlinear RD systems is examined to demonstrate applicability of the definitions proposed and it is shown when different definitions of $Q$-conditional symmetry lead to the same operators.
This work presents a geometrical formulation of the Clairin theory of conditional symmetries for higher-order systems of partial differential equations (PDEs). We devise methods for obtaining Lie algebras of conditional symmetries from known conditional symmetries, and unnecessary previous assumptions of the theory are removed. As a consequence, new insights into other types of conditional symmetries arise. We then apply the so-called PDE Lie systems to the derivation and analysis of Lie algebras of conditional symmetries. In particular, we develop a method for obtaining solutions of a higher-…
In this paper, we propose the invariant subspace approach to find exact solutions of time-fractional partial differential equations (PDEs) with time delay. An algorithmic approach of finding invariant subspaces for the generalized non-linear time-fractional reaction-diffusion equations with time delay is presented. We show that the fractional reaction-diffusion equations with time delay admit several invariant subspaces which further yields several distinct analytical solutions. We also demonstrate how to derive exact solutions for time-fractional PDEs with multiple time delays. Finally, we ex…
Recently we have demonstrated how to use partner symmetries for obtaining noninvariant solutions of heavenly equations of Plebanski that govern heavenly gravitational metrics. In this paper, we present a class of scalar second-order PDEs with four variables, that possess partner symmetries and contain only second derivatives of the unknown. We present a general form of such a PDE together with recursion relations between partner symmetries. This general PDE is transformed to several simplest canonical forms containing the two heavenly equations of Plebanski among them and two other nonlinear e…
Lately, many phenomena in both applied and abstract mathematics and related disciplines have been expressed in terms of high order and fractional PDEs. Recently, Allouba introduced the Brownian-time Brownian sheet (BTBS) and connected it to a new system of fourth order interacting PDEs. The interaction in this multiparameter BTBS-PDEs connection is novel, leads to an intimately-connected linear system variant of the celebrated Kuramoto-Sivashinsky PDE, and is not shared with its one-time-parameter counterpart. It also means that these PDEs systems are to be solved for a family of functions, a …
We study the Lie point symmetries of a general class of partial differential equations (PDE) of second order. An equation from this class naturally defines a second-order symmetric tensor (metric). In the case the PDE is linear on the first derivatives we show that the Lie point symmetries are given by the conformal algebra of the metric modulo a constraint involving the linear part of the PDE. Important elements in this class are the Klein--Gordon equation and the Laplace equation. We apply the general results and determine the Lie point symmetries of these equations in various general classe…
We introduce an approach to study certain singular PDEs which is based on techniques from paradifferential calculus and on ideas from the theory of controlled rough paths. We illustrate its applicability on some model problems like differential equations driven by fractional Brownian motion, a fractional Burgers type SPDE driven by space-time white noise, and a non-linear version of the parabolic Anderson model with a white noise potential.
We give two theorems which show that the Lie point and the Noether symmetries of a second-order ordinary differential equation of the form (D/(Ds))(((Dx^{i}(s))/(Ds)))=F(x^{i}(s),x^{j}(s)) are subalgebras of the special projective and the homothetic algebra of the space respectively. We examine the possible extension of this result to partial differential equations (PDE) of the form A^{ij}u_{ij}-F(x^{i},u,u_{i})=0 where u(x^{i}) and u_{ij} stands for the second partial derivative. We find that if the coefficients A^{ij} are independent of u(x^{i}) then the Lie point symmetries of the PDE form …
A new method (by Kersten, Krasil'shchik and Verbovetsky), based on the theory of differential coverings, allows to relate a system of PDEs with a differential operator in such a way that the operator maps symmetries/conserved quantities into symmetries/conserved quantities of the system of PDEs. When applied to a quasilinear first-order system of PDEs and a Dubrovin-Novikov homogeneous Hamiltonian operator the method yields conditions on the operator and the system that have interesting differential and projective geometric interpretations.
We apply the theory of Lie point symmetries for the study of a family of partial differential equations which are integrable by the hyperbolic reductions method and are reduced to members of the Painlevé transcendents. The main results of this study is that from the application of the similarity transformations provided by the Lie point symmetries all the members of the family of the partial differential equations are reduced to second-order differential equations which are maximal symmetric and can be linearized.
We generalize the differential representation of the operators of the Galilean algebras to include fractional derivatives. As a result a whole new class of scale invariant Galilean algebras are obtained. The first member of this class has dynamical index $z=2$ similar to the Schrödinger algebra. The second member of the class has dynamical index $z=3/2$, which happens to be the dynamical index Kardar-Parisi-Zhang equation.
The Darboux-Egoroff system of PDEs with any number $n\ge 3$ of independent variables plays an essential role in the problems of describing $n$-dimensional flat diagonal metrics of Egoroff type and Frobenius manifolds. We construct a recursion operator and its inverse for symmetries of the Darboux-Egoroff system and describe some symmetries generated by these operators. The constructed recursion operators are not pseudodifferential, but are Backlund autotransformations for the linearized system whose solutions correspond to symmetries of the Darboux-Egoroff system. For some other PDEs, recursio…
It is proved a theorem providing necessary and sufficient conditions enabling one to map a nonlinear system of first order partial differential equations, polynomial in the derivatives, to an equivalent autonomous first order system polynomially homogeneous in the derivatives. The result is intimately related to the symmetry properties of the source system, and the proof, involving the use of the canonical variables associated to the admitted Lie point symmetries, is constructive. First order Monge-Ampère systems, either with constant coefficients or with coefficients depending on the field va…
The aim of this work is to further study the fractional bosonic string theory. In particular, we wrote the energy-momentum tensor in the fractional conformal gauge and study their symmetries. We introduced the Virasoro operators of all orders. In fact, we found the same $L_0 (\widetilde{L}_0)$ operator originally defined in the work of fractional bosonic string up to a shift transformation. Also, we compute the algebra of our Fractional Virasoro Operators, finding that the satifies the $Witt$ algebra. Lastly, we showed that in the boundary of our theory we recover the lost conservation law ass…
The concept of nonlinear self-adjointness is employed to construct the conservation laws for fractional evolution equations using its Lie point symmetries. The approach is demonstrated on subdiffusion and diffusion-wave equations with the Riemann-Liouville and Caputo time-fractional derivatives. It is shown that these equations are nonlinearly self-adjoint and therefore desired conservation laws can be obtained using appropriate formal Lagrangians. Fractional generalizations of the Noether operators are also proposed for the equations with the Riemann-Liouville and Caputo time-fractional deriv…
The Lie symmetry method is applied to derive the point symmetries for the N-dimensional fractional heat equation. We find that that the numbers of symmetries and Lie brackets are reduced significantly as compared to the nonfractional order for all the dimensions. In fact for integer order linear heat equation the number of solution symmetries is equal to the product of the order and space dimension, whereas for the fractional case, it is half of the product on the order and space dimension. We have classified the symmetries and discussed the Lie algebras and conservational laws. We generalise …
The paper proposes an algorithm which could identify a general class of pdes describing dynamical systems with similar symmetries. The way that will be followed starts from a given group of symmetries, the determination of the invariants and, then, of the compatible equations of evolution. The algorithm will be exemplified by two classes of equations which describe the Fokker-Planck model and the "backward" Kolgomorov one.
For the class of systems of PDEs, for which infinitesimal translations (with respect to some (in)dependent variables) possess specific finite-dimensional invariant subspaces of the space of generalized symmetries of the system considered. We establish when there exist generalized symmetries from these subspaces, which depend from the above-mentioned variables.
We provide a general theoretical framework allowing us to extend the classical Lie theory for partial differential equations to the case of equations of fractional order. We propose a general prolongation formula for the study of Lie symmetries in the case of an arbitrary finite number of independent variables. We also prove the Lie theorem in the case of fractional differential equations, showing that the proper space for the analysis of these symmetries is the infinite dimensional jet space.
Fractional quantum Hall (FQH) states are examples of symmetry-enriched topological states (SETs): in addition to the intrinsic topological order, which is robust to symmetry breaking, they possess symmetry-protected topological invariants, such as fractional charge of anyons and fractional Hall conductivity. In this paper we develop a comprehensive theory of symmetry-protected topological invariants for FQH states with spatial symmetries, which applies to Abelian and non-Abelian topological states, by using a recently developed framework of $G$-crossed braided tensor categories ($G\times$BTCs)…
