We study the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations in the two-dimensional strip $\mathbb{R} \times [0,L]$, with periodic boundary conditions and no exterior forcing. If the initial velocity is bounded, we prove that the solution remains uniformly bounded for all times, and that the vorticity distribution converges to zero as $t \to \infty$. We deduce that, after a transient period, a laminar regime emerges in which the solution rapidly converges to a shear flow governed by the one-dimensional heat equation. Our approach is constructive and gives explicit estimates on the size of the solution and the lifetime of the turbulent period in terms of the initial Reynolds number.
We prove unique existence of local-in-time smooth solutions of the Navier-Stokes equations for initial data in $L^{p}$ and $p \in [3, \infty)$ in an infinite cylinder, subject to the Neumann boundary condition.
Global regular axially symmetric solutions with large swirl in a cylinder with periodic conditions on the top and on the bottom are proved. On the lateral part of its boundary the boundary slip conditions are assumed. The proof is obtained step by step extending a local solution and showing that the initial data are not increasing.
In this paper, the global strong axisymmetric solutions for the inhomogeneous incompressible Navier-Stokes system are established in the exterior of a cylinder subject to the Dirichlet boundary conditions. Moreover, the vacuum is allowed in these solutions. One of the key ingredients of the analysis is to obtain the ${L^{2}(s,T;L^{\infty}(Ω))}$ bound for the velocity field, where the axisymmetry of the solutions plays an important role.
General evolution equations in Banach spaces are investigated. Based on an operator-valued version of de Leeuw's transference principle, time-periodic $L^p$ estimates of maximal regularity type are established from $\mathscr{R}$-bounds of the family of solution operators ($\mathscr{R}$-solvers) to the corresponding resolvent problems. With this method, existence of time-periodic solutions to the Navier-Stokes equations is shown for two configurations: in a periodically moving bounded domain and in an exterior domain, subject to prescribed time-periodic forcing and boundary data.
This paper is concerned with the 3-dimensional two-species chemotaxis-Navier--Stokes system with Lotka--Volterra competitive kinetics under homogeneous Neumann boundary conditions and initial conditions. Recently, in the 2-dimensional setting, global existence and stabilization of classical solutions to the above system were first established. However, the 3-dimensional case has not been studied: Because of difficulties in the Navier--Stokes system, we can not expect existence of classical solutions to the above system. The purpose of this paper is to obtain global existence of weak solutions …
In this paper we give a survey on how to apply recent techniques of Clifford analysis over conformally flat manifolds to deal with instationary flow problems on cylinders and tori. Solutions are represented in terms of integral operators involving explicit expressions for the Cauchy kernel that are associated to the parabolic Dirac operators acting on spinor sections of these manifolds.
We consider Leray's problem on stationary Navier-Stokes flows with arbitrary large fluxes in an unbounded cylinder with several exits to infinity. For a stationary Navier-Stokes flow with large fluxes in the unbounded cylinder we prove that, if the difference between the pressure of the main flow and the pressure of the Poiseuille flow with the same flux in a branch of the cylinder satisfies some asymptotic boundedness condition at $|x|\rightarrow \infty$ then the flow behaves at infinity of the branch like the Poiseuille flow.
An explicit saturating set consisting of eigenfunctions of Stokes operator in general 3D Cylinders is proposed. The existence of saturating sets implies the approximate controllability for Navier--Stokes equations in $\rm 3D$ Cylinders under Lions boundary conditions.
Asymptotic behavior and Liouville-type theorems for axisymmetric stationary Navier-Stokes equations outside of an infinite cylinder with a periodic boundary condition
We provide general sufficient conditions for branching out of a time-periodic family of solutions from steady-state solutions to the two-dimensional Navier-Stokes equations in the exterior of a cylinder. To this end, we first show that the problem can be formulated as a coupled elliptic-parabolic nonlinear system in appropriate function spaces. This is obtained by separating the time-independent averaged component of the velocity field from its "purely periodic" one. We then prove that time-periodic bifurcation occurs, provided the linearized time-independent operator of the parabolic problem …
We point out some criteria that imply regularity of axisymmetric solutions to Navier-Stokes equations. We show that boundedness of $\|{v_{r}}/{\sqrt{r^3}}\|_{L_2({\rm R}^3\times (0,T))}$ as well as boundedness of $\|{ω_φ}/{\sqrt{r}}\|_{L_2({\rm R}^3\times (0,T))},$ where $v_r$ is the radial component of velocity and $ω_φ$ is the angular component of vorticity, imply regularity of weak solutions.
We consider the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations in the cylinder $\R \times \T$, with no exterior forcing, and we investigate the long-time behavior of solutions arising from merely bounded initial data. Although we do not know if such solutions stay uniformly bounded for all times, we prove that they converge in an appropriate sense to the family of spatially homogeneous equilibria as $t \to \infty$. Convergence is uniform on compact subdomains, and holds for all times except on a sparse subset of the positive real axis. We also improve the known upper bound on the $L^\infty$ norm of th…
Global axisymmetric solutions and incompressible limit for the 3D isentropic compressible Navier-Stokes equations in annular cylinders with swirl and large initial data
A regularity criterion for the angular component of velocity in the norm $L_\infty(0,T;L_p(Ω)),\;\frac 3 p <1$ in axisymmetric Navier Stokes equations in a cylinder
We consider the motion of incompressible viscous non-homogeneous fluid described by the Navier-Stokes equations in a bounded cylinder under boundary slip conditions. Assume that the third co-ordinate axis is the axis of the cylinder. Assuming that the derivatives of density, velocity, external force with respect to the third co-ordinate are sufficiently small in some norms we prove large time regular solutions without any restriction on the existence time. The proof is divided into two parts. First an a priori estimate is shown. Next the existence follows from the Leray-Schauder fixed point th…
In this lecture note, we study free boundary problems for the Navier-Stokes equations with and without surface tension. The local well-posedness, the global well-posedness, and asymptotics of solutions as time goes to infinity are studied in the Lp in time and Lq in space framework. The tool in proving the local well-posedness is the maximal Lp-Lq regularity for the Stokes equations with non-homogeneous free boundary conditions. The approach here of proving the maximal Lp-Lq regularity is based on the R bounded solution operators of the generalized resolvent problem for the Stokes equations wi…
The axially symmetric solutions to the Navier-Stokes equations in a periodic cylinder with boundary slip conditions on the lateral part of its boundary are considered. A priori estimates for solutions with large swirl necessary for a proof of global regular solutions are derived.
The coupled quasilinear Keller-Segel-Navier-Stokes system $$ \left\{ \begin{array}{l} n_t+u\cdot\nabla n=Δn-\nabla\cdot(nS(x,n,c)\nabla c),\quad x\in Ω, t>0, c_t+u\cdot\nabla c=Δc-c+n,\quad x\in Ω, t>0, u_t+κ(u \cdot \nabla)u+\nabla P=Δu+n\nabla ϕ,\quad x\in Ω, t>0, \nabla\cdot u=0,\quad x\in Ω, t>0 \end{array}\right.\eqno(KSNF) $$ is considered under Neumann boundary conditions for $n$ and $c$ and no-slip boundary conditions for $u$ in three-dimensional bounded domains $Ω\subseteq \mathbb{R}^3$ with smooth boundary, where $κ\in \mathbb{R}$ is given constant, $ϕ\in W^{1,\infty}(Ω),m>0$, $|S(x,…
The present paper deals with existence and uniqueness of global mild solutions for the 2D Navier-Stokes equations with impulses. Using the framework of nonautonomous dynamical systems, we extend previous results considering the 2D Navier-Stokes equations with impulse effects and allowing that the nonlinear terms are explicitly time-dependent. Additionally, we present sufficient conditions to obtain dissipativity (boundedness) for solutions starting in bounded sets.
The existence of global regular axially symmetric solutions to the Navier-Stokes equations in a bounded cylinder is proved. The main step in the proof is a proof of the Holder continuity of the swirl. This gives a possibility to prove global a priori estimate for regular solutions. Then a local solution can be extended step by step in time.
This paper deals with the following quasilinear Keller-Segel-Navier-Stokes system modeling coral fertilization $(*)$: $$\left\{ \begin{array}{l} n_t+u\cdot\nabla n=Δn-\nabla\cdot(nS(x,n,c)\nabla c)-nm,\quad x\in Ω, t>0, c_t+u\cdot\nabla c=Δc-c+m,\quad x\in Ω, t>0, m_t+u\cdot\nabla m=Δm-nm,\quad x\in Ω, t>0,\\ u_t+κ(u \cdot \nabla)u+\nabla P=Δu+(n+m)\nabla ϕ,\quad x\in Ω, t>0,\\ \nabla\cdot u=0,\quad x\in Ω, t>0 \end{array}\right.$$ under no-flux boundary conditions in a bounded domain $Ω\subset \mathbb{R}^3$ with smooth boundary, where $ϕ\in W^{2,\infty} (Ω)$. Here the matrix-valued function $…
The Navier--Stokes system is considered in a compact Riemannian manifold. Gevrey class regularity is proven under Lions boundary conditions: in 2D for the Rectangle, Cylinder, and Hemisphere, and in 3D for the Rectangle. The cases of the 2D Sphere and 2D and 3D Torus are also revisited.
We consider the iterative resolution scheme for the Navier-Stokes equation, and focus on the second iterate, more precisely on the map from the initial data to the second iterate at a given time t. We investigate boundedness properties of this bilinear operator. This new approach yields very interesting results: a new perspective on Koch-Tataru solutions; a first step towards weak strong uniqueness for Koch-Tataru solutions; and finally an instability result in $B^{-1}_{\infty,q}$, for q>2.
We construct a maximal function associated with a family of skewed cylinders. These cylinders, which are defined as tubular neighborhoods of trajectories of a mollified flow, appear in the study of fluid equations such as the Navier-Stokes equations and the Euler equations. We define a maximal function subordinate to these cylinders, and show it is of weak type $(1, 1)$ and strong type $(p, p)$ by a covering lemma. As an application, we give an alternative proof for the higher derivatives estimate of smooth solutions to the three-dimensional Navier-Stokes equations.
We establish several boundary $\varepsilon$-regularity criteria for suitable weak solutions for the 3D incompressible Navier-Stokes equations in a half cylinder with the Dirichlet boundary condition on the flat boundary. Our proofs are based on delicate iteration arguments and interpolation techniques. These results extend and provide alternative proofs for the earlier interior results by Vasseur [18], Choi-Vasseur [2], and Phuc-Guevara [6].
We study the asymptotic behavior of axisymmetric solutions with no swirl to the steady Navier-Stokes equations in the outside of the cylinder. We prove an a priori decay estimate of the vorticity under the assumption that the velocity has generalized finite Dirichlet integral. As an application, we obtain a Liouville-type theorem.
We study the strong solution to the 3-D compressible Navier--Stokes equations. We propose a new blow up criterion for barotropic gases in terms of the integral norm of density $ρ$ and the divergence of the velocity $\bu$ without any restriction on the physical viscosity constants. Our blow up criteria can be seen as a partial realization of the underlying principle that the higher integrability implies the boundedness and then eventual regularity. We also present similar blow up criterion for the heat conducting gases.
We study an initial-boundary value problem of the three-dimensional Navier-Stokes equations in the exterior of a cylinder $Π=\{x=(x_{h}, x_3)\ |\ |x_{h} |>1\}$, subject to the slip boundary condition. We construct unique global solutions for axisymmetric initial data $u_0\in L^{3}\cap L^{2}(Π)$ satisfying the decay condition of the swirl component $ru^θ_{0}\in L^{\infty}(Π)$.
Axially symmetric solutions to the Navier-Stokes equations in a bounded cylinder are considered. On the boundary the normal component of the velocity and he angular components of the velocity and vorticity are assumed to vanish. If the norm of the initial swirl is sufficiently small, then the regularity of axially symmetric, weak solutions is shown. The key tool is a new estimate for the stream function in certain weighted Sobolev spaces.
In this paper, we address the partial regularity of suitable weak solutions of the incompressible Navier--Stokes equations. We prove an interior regularity criterion involving only one component of the velocity. Namely, if $(u,p)$ is a suitable weak solution and a certain scale-invariant quantity involving only $u_3$ is small on a space-time cylinder $Q_r(x_0,t_0)$, then $u$ is regular at $(x_0,t_0)$.
We consider the Navier-Stokes system describing the time evolution of a compressible barotropic fluid confined to a bounded spatial domain in the 3-D physical space, supplemented with the Navier's slip boundary conditions. It is shown that the class of global in time strong solutions is robust with respect to small perturbations of the initial data. Explicit qualitative estimates are given also in terms of the shape of the underlying physical domain, with applications to problems posed on thin cylinders.
Global boundedness, absorbing sets and mass persistene in two-dimensional chemotaxis-Navier-Stokes systems with weakly singular sensitivity and sub-logistic sources

We study the Cauchy problem in $n$-dimensional space for the system of Navier-Stokes equations in critical mixed-norm Lebesgue spaces. Local well-posedness and global well-posedness of solutions are established in the class of critical mixed-norm Lebesgue spaces. Being in the mixed-norm Lebesgue spaces, both of the initial data and the solutions could be singular at certain points or decaying to zero at infinity with different rates in different spatial variable directions. Some of these singular rates could be very strong and some of the decaying rates could be significantly slow. Besides oth…
We treat the heat equation with singular drift terms and its generalization: the linearized Navier-Stokes system. In the first case, we obtain boundedness of weak solutions for highly singular, "supercritical" data. In the second case, we obtain regularity result for weak solutions with mildly singular data ( those in the Kato class). This not only extends some of the classical regularity theory in [AS], [CrZ] and others from the case of elliptic and heat equations to that of linearized Navier-Stokes equations but also proves an unexpected gradient estimate, which extends the recent interestin…
We study resolvent estimate and maximal regularity of the Stokes operator in $L^q$-spaces with exponential weights in the axial directions of unbounded cylinders of ${\mathbb R}^n,n\geq 3$. For straights cylinders we obtain these results in Lebesgue spaces with exponential weights in the axial direction and Muckenhoupt weights in the cross-section. Next, for general cylinders with several exits to infinity we prove that the Stokes operator in $L^q$-spaces with exponential weight along the axial directions generates an exponentially decaying analytic semigroup and has maximal regularity. The pr…
In this paper we prove Liouville type result for the stationary solutions to the compressible Navier-Stokes-Poisson equations(NSP) and the compressible Navier-Stokes equations(NS) in $\Bbb R^N$, $N\geq 2$. Assuming suitable integrability and the uniform boundedness conditions for the solutions we are led to the conclusion that $v=0$. In the case of (NS) we deduce that the similar integrability conditions imply $v=0$ and $ρ=$constant on $\Bbb R^N$. This shows that if we impose the the non-vacuum boundary condition at spatial infinity for (NS), $v\to 0$ and $ρ\to ρ_\infty >0$, then $v=0$, $ρ=ρ_\…
The aim of this paper is to prove the strong convergence of the solutions to a vector-BGK model under the diffusive scaling to the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations on the two-dimensional torus. This result holds in any interval of time $[0, T]$, with $T>0$. We also provide the global in time uniform boundedness of the solutions to the approximating system. Our argument is based on the use of local in time $H^s$-estimates for the model, established in a previous work, combined with the $L^2$-relative entropy estimate and the interpolation properties of the Sobolev spaces.
We consider a free boundary problem of the Navier--Stokes equations in the three-dimensional Euclidean space with moving contact line, where the 90$^\circ$-contact angle condition is posed. We show that for given $T > 0$ the problem is local well-posed on $(0, T)$ provided that the initial data are small. In contrast to the strategy in Wilke (2013), we study the transformed problem in an $L^p$-in-time and $L^q$-in-space setting, which yields the optimal regularity of the initial data.
In the presence of vacuum, the physical entropy for polytropic gases behaves singularly and it is thus a challenge to study its dynamics. It is shown in this paper that the boundedness of the entropy can be propagated up to any finite time provided that the initial vacuum presents only at far fields with sufficiently slow decay of the initial density. More precisely, for the Cauchy problem of the one dimensional heat conductive compressible Navier-Stokes equations, the global well-posedness of strong solutions and uniform boundedness of the corresponding entropy are established, as long as the…
We show that the spatial $L^q$ ($q > 5/3$) norm of the vorticity of an incompressible viscous fluid in $\mathbb{R}^3$ or $\mathbb{T}^3$ remains bounded uniformly in time, provided that the direction of vorticity is Hölder continuous in the space variable, and that the space--time $L^q$ norm of the vorticity is finite. The Hölder index depends only on $q$. This serves as a variant of the classical result by P. Constantin and Ch. Fefferman (Direction of vorticity and the problem of global regularity for the Navier--Stokes equations, Indiana Univ. J. Math., 42 (1993), 775--789).
We prove long time existence of regular solutions to the Navier-Stokes equations coupled with the heat equation. We consider the system in non-axially symmetric cylinder with the slip boundary conditions for the Navier-Stokes equations and the Neumann condition for the heat equation. The long time existence is possible because we assumed that derivatives with respect to the variable along the axis of the cylinder of the initial velocity, initial temperature and the external force in $L_2$ norms are sufficiently small. We proved the existence of such solutions that velocity and temperature belo…
Let $v$ and $ø$ be the velocity and the vorticity of the a suitable weak solution of the 3D Navier-Stokes equations in a space-time domain containing $z_0 =(x_0, t_0)$, and $Q_{z_0, r} =B_{x_0, r}\times (t_0-r^2, t_0)$ be a parabolic cylinder in the domain. We show that if $v\times \fracø{|ø|}\in L^{γ, α}_{x,t} (Q_{z_0, r})$ or $ø\times \frac{v}{|v|}\in L^{γ, α}_{x,t} (Q_{z_0, r})$, where $L^{γ, α}_{x,t}$ denotes the Serrin type of class, then $z_0$ is a regular point for $v$. This refines previous local regularity criteria for the suitable weak solutions.
In this paper, we study the nonlinear stability of a steady circular flow created between two rotating concentric cylinders. The dynamics of the viscous fluid are described by 2D Navier-Stokes equations. We adopt scaling variables. For the rescaled equations, we prove that the steady flow (Taylor-Couette flow) is asymptotically stable up to a large perturbation of initial data. Back to the original 2D Navier-Stokes equations, this implies an improved transition threshold for the Taylor-Couette flow. The improvement is due to enhanced dissipation and new observations and constructions of weight…
In this article we consider the Stokes problem with Navier-type boundary conditions on a domain $Ω$, not necessarily simply connected. Since under these conditions the Stokes problem has a non trivial kernel, we also study the solutions lying in the orthogonal of that kernel. We prove the analyticity of several semigroups generated by the Stokes operator considered in different functional spaces. We obtain strong, weak and very weak solutions for the time dependent Stokes problem with the Navier-type boundary condition under different hypothesis on the initial data $\boldsymbol{u}_0$ and exter…
We derive the 1D isentropic Euler and Navier-Stokes equations describing the motion of a gas through a nozzle of variable cross section as the asymptotic limit of the 3D isentropic Navier-Stokes system in a cylinder, the diameter of which tends to zero. Our method is based on the relative energy inequality satisfied by any weak solution of the 3D Navier-Stokes system and a variant of Korn-Poincare's inequality on thin channels that may be of independent interest.
