In the presence of vacuum, the physical entropy for polytropic gases behaves singularly and it is thus a challenge to study its dynamics. It is shown in this paper that the boundedness of the entropy can be propagated up to any finite time provided that the initial vacuum presents only at far fields with sufficiently slow decay of the initial density. More precisely, for the Cauchy problem of the one dimensional heat conductive compressible Navier-Stokes equations, the global well-posedness of strong solutions and uniform boundedness of the corresponding entropy are established, as long as the initial density vanishes only at far fields with a rate no more than $O(\frac{1}{x^2})$. The main tools of proving the uniform boundedness of the entropy are some singularly weighted energy estimates carefully designed for the heat conductive compressible Navier-Stokes equations and an elaborate De Giorgi type iteration technique for some classes of degenerate parabolic equations. The De Giorgi type iterations are carried out to different equations in establishing the lower and upper bounds of the entropy.
We study an initial boundary value problem for the Navier-Stokes equations of compressible viscous heat-conductive fluids in a 2-D periodic domain or the unit square domain. We establish a blow-up criterion for the local strong solutions in terms of the gradient of the velocity only, which coincides with the famous Beale-Kato-Majda criterion for ideal incompressible flows.
We prove that there exists a strong solution to the Dirichlet boundary value problem for the steady Navier-Stokes equations of a compressible heat-conductive fluid with large external forces in a bounded domain $R^d (d = 2, 3)$, provided that the Mach number is appropriately small. At the same time, the low Mach number limit is rigorously verified. The basic idea in the proof is to split the equations into two parts, one of which is similar to the steady incompressible Navier-Stokes equations with large forces, while another part corresponds to the steady compressible heat-conductive Navier-St…
We establish a blow-up criterion in terms of the upper bound of the density and temperature for the strong solution to 2D compressible viscous heat-conductive flows. The initial vacuum is allowed.
In this paper, we study the global existence of classical solutions to the three dimensional ideal invicid compressible and heat conductive fluids with radial symmetrical data in $H^s(\mathbb{R}^3)$. Our proof is based on the symmetric hyperbolic structure of the system.
In this paper, we investigate the three dimensional stationary compressible Navier-Stokes equations, and obtain Liouville type theorems if a smooth solution $(ρ, \mathbf{u})$ satisfies some suitable conditions. In particular, our results improve and generalize the corresponding result of Li and Yu (2014) [8].
The compressible Navier-Stokes-Poisson system is concerned in the present paper, and the global existence and uniqueness of the strong solution is shown in the framework of hybrid Besov spaces in three and higher dimensions.
In this paper, we prove the local well-posedness in critical Besov spaces for the compressible Navier-Stokes equations with density dependent viscosities under the assumption that the initial density is bounded away from zero.
We investigate the initial-boundary value problem for one-dimensional compressible, heat-conductive, non-resistive MHD equations of viscous, ideal polytropic fluids in the Lagrangian coordinates. The existence and Lipschitz continuous dependence on the initial data of global weak solutions are established. Uniqueness of weak solutions follows as a direct consequence of stability.
We study the large-time behavior of solutions to the compressible Navier-Stokes equations for a viscous and heat-conductive gases in $\mathbb{R}^3$. More precisely, under a suitable additional condition involving only the low frequencies of the initial data, we exhibit the optimal time decay rates for the constructed global solutions. The proof relies on some new energy arguments developed by Xin and Xu [39] for the compressible Navier-Stokes equations.
This paper considers the Cauchy problem of equations for the viscous compressible and heat-conductive fluids in the two-dimensional(2D) space. We establish the local existence theory of unique strong solution under some initial layer compatibility conditions. The initial data can be arbitrarily large, the initial density is allowed to vanish in any set and the far field state is assumed to be vacuum.
It is well-known that the rarefaction wave, one of the basic wave patterns to the hyperbolic conservation laws, is nonlinearly stable to the one-dimensional compressible Navier-Stokes equations (cf. [14,15,12,17]). In the present paper we proved the time-asymptotically nonlinear stability of the planar rarefaction wave to the two-dimensional compressible and isentropic Navier-Stokes equations, which gives the first stability result of the planar rarefaction wave to the multi-dimensional system with physical viscosities.
We prove the global existence and uniqueness of strong solutions for a compressible multifluid described by the barotropic Navier-Stokes equations in dim = 1. The result holds when the diffusion coefficient depends on the pressure. It relies on a global control in time of the L2 norm of the space derivative of the density, via a new kind of entropy.
We consider the compressible Navier-Stokes equation with density dependent viscosity coefficients, focusing on the case where those coefficients vanish on vacuum. We prove the stability of weak solutions both in the torus and in the whole space in dimension 2 and 3. The pressure is given by p=rho^gamma, and our result holds for any gamma>1. In particular, we obtain the stability of weak solutions of the Saint-Venant model for shallow water.
We study the motion of the steady compressible heat conducting viscous fluid in a bounded three dimensional domain governed by the compressible Navier-Stokes-Fourier system. Our main result is the existence of a weak solution to these equations for arbitrarily large data. A key element of the proof is a special approximation of the original system guaranteeing pointwise uniform boundedness of the density. Therefore the passage to the limit omits tedious technical tricks required by the standard theory. Basic estimates on the solutions are possible to obtain by a suitable choice of physically r…
In this paper, we study the global well-posedness of the 2D compressible Navier-Stokes equations with large initial data and vacuum. It is proved that if the shear viscosity $μ$ is a positive constant and the bulk viscosity $ł$ is the power function of the density, that is, $ł(\r)=\r^\b$ with $\b>3$, then the 2D compressible Navier-Stokes equations with the periodic boundary conditions on the torus $\mathbb{T}^2$ admit a unique global classical solution $(\r,u)$ which may contain vacuums in an open set of $\mathbb{T}^2$. Note that the initial data can be arbitrarily large to contain vacuum sta…
Cannone \cite{Cannone} proved the global well-posedness of the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations for a class of highly oscillating data. In this paper, we prove the global well-posedness for the compressible Navier-Stokes equations in the critical functional framework with the initial data close to a stable equilibrium. Especially, this result allows us to construct global solutions for the highly oscillating initial velocity. The proof relies on a new estimate for the hyperbolic/parabolic system with convection terms.
The compressible Navier-Stokes-Poisson (NSP) system is considered in $R^3$ in the present paper and the influences of the electric field of the internal electrostatic potential force governed by the self-consistent Poisson equation on the qualitative behaviors of solutions is analyzed. It is observed that the rotating effect of electric field affects the dispersion of fluids and reduces the time decay rate of solutions. Indeed, we show that the density of the NSP system converges to its equilibrium state at the same $L^2$-rate $(1+t)^{-\frac34}$ or $L^\infty$-rate $(1+t)^{-3/2}$ respectively a…
We analyse the existing derivation of the models of non-linear acoustics such as the Kuznetsov equation, the NPE equation and the KZK equation. The technique of introducing a corrector in the derivation ansatz allows to consider the solutions of these equations as approximations of the solution of the initial system (a com-pressible Navier-Stokes/Euler system). The validation of the approximation ansatz is given for the KZK equation case.
We prove that the smooth solutions to the Cauchy problem for the Navier-Stokes equations with conserved mass, total energy and finite momentum of inertia loses the initial smoothness within a finite time in the case of space of dimension 3 or greater even if the initial data are not compactly supported.
Large-time behavior of solutions to the inflow problem of full compressible Navier-Stokes equations is investigated on the half line $R^+ =(0,+\infty)$. The wave structure which contains four waves: the transonic(or degenerate) boundary layer solution, 1-rarefaction wave, viscous 2-contact wave and 3-rarefaction wave to the inflow problem is described and the asymptotic stability of the superposition of the above four wave patterns to the inflow problem of full compressible Navier-Stokes equations is proven under some smallness conditions. The proof is given by the elementary energy analysis b…
It is well-known that one-dimensional isentropic gas dynamics has two elementary waves, i.e., shock wave and rarefaction wave. Among the two waves, only the rarefaction wave can be connected with vacuum. Given a rarefaction wave with one-side vacuum state to the compressible Euler equations, we can construct a sequence of solutions to one-dimensional compressible isentropic Navier-Stokes equations which converge to the above rarefaction wave with vacuum as the viscosity tends to zero. Moreover, the uniform convergence rate is obtained. The proof consists of a scaling argument and elementary en…
This paper establishes a blowup criterion for the three-dimensional viscous, compressible, and heat conducting magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) flows. It is essentially shown that for the Cauchy problem and the initial-boundary-value one of the three-dimensional compressible MHD flows with initial density allowed to vanish, the strong or smooth solution exists globally if the density is bounded from above and the velocity satisfies the Serrin's condition. Therefore, if the Serrin norm of the velocity remains bounded, it is not possible for other kinds of singularities (such as vacuum states vanish or…
In this paper, the initial-boundary value problem of the 1D full compressible Navier-Stokes equations with positive constant viscosity but with zero heat conductivity is considered. Global well-posedness is established for any $H^1$ initial data. The initial density is required to be nonnegative, which is not necessary to be uniformly away from vacuum. This not only generalizes the well-known result of Kazhikhov--Shelukhin (Kazhikhov, A.~V.; Shelukhin, V.~V.: \emph{Unique global solution with respect to time of initial boundary value problems for one-dimensional equations of a viscous gas}, J.…
In this paper, we consider the Cauchy problem to the heat conductive compressible Navier-Stokes equations in the presence of vacuum and with vacuum far field. Global well-posedness of strong solutions is established under the assumption, among some other regularity and compatibility conditions, that the scaling invariant quantity $\|ρ_0\|_\infty(\|ρ_0\|_3+\|ρ_0\|_\infty^2\|\sqrt{ρ_0}u_0\|_2^2)(\|\nabla u_0\|_2^2+\|ρ_0\|_\infty\|\sqrt{ρ_0}E_0\|_2^2)$ is sufficiently small, with the smallness depending only on the parameters $R, γ, μ, λ,$ and $κ$ in the system. The total mass can be either finit…
This paper is concerned with the Cauchy problem of Navier-Stokes equations for compressible viscous heat-conductive fluids with far-field vacuum at infinity in $\R^3$. For less regular data and weaker compatibility condition than those proposed by Cho-Kim \cite{CK2006}, we first prove the existence of local-in-time solutions belonging to a larger class of functions in which the uniqueness can be shown to hold. The local solution is in fact a classical one away from the initial time, provided the initial density is regular. We also establish the global well-posedness of classical solutions with…
In general, the resistivity is inversely proportional to the electrical conductivity, and is usually taken to be zero when the conducting fluid is of extremely high conductivity (e.g., ideal conductors). In this paper, we first establish the global well-posedness of strong solution to an initial-boundary value problem of the one-dimensional compressible, viscous, heat-conductive, non-resistive MHD equations with general heat-conductivity coefficient and large data. Then, the non-resistive limit is justified and the convergence rates are obtained, provided the heat-conductivity satisfies some g…
In this paper, we consider the Cauchy problem to the three dimensional heat conducting compressible nematic liquid crystal system in the presence of vacuum and with vacuum far fields. Global well-posedness of strong solutions is established under the condition that the scaling invariant quantity $ (\|ρ_0\|_\infty+1)\big[\|ρ_0\|_3+(\|ρ_0\|_\infty+1)^2(\|\sqrt{ρ_0}u_0\|_2^2+ \|\nabla d_0\|_2^2)\big] \big[\|\nabla u_0\|_2^2+(\|ρ_0\|_\infty+1)(\|\sqrt{ρ_0}E_0\|_2^2 + \|\nabla^2 d_0\|_2^2)\big]$ is sufficiently small with the smallness depending only on the parameters appeared in the system.
In this paper, we rigorously derive the compressible one-fluid Navier-Stokes equation from the scaled compressible two-fluid Navier-Stokes-Maxwell equations locally in time under the assumption that the initial data are well prepared. We justify the singular limit by proving the uniform decay of the error system, which is obtained by elaborate energy estimates.
We obtain existence and conormal Sobolev regularity of strong solutions to the 3D compressible isentropic Navier-Stokes system on the half-space with a Navier boundary condition, over a time that is uniform with respect to the viscosity parameters when these are small. These solutions then converge globally and strongly in $L^2$ towards the solution of the compressible isentropic Euler system when the viscosity parameters go to zero.
The global existence issue in critical regularity spaces for the full Navier-Stokes equationssatisfied by compressible viscous and heat-conductive gases has been first addressed in \cite{D2}, then recently extended to the general $L^p$ framework in \cite{DH}.In the present work, we establish decay estimates for the global solutions constructed in \cite{DH}, under anadditional mild integrability assumption that is satisfied if the low frequencies of the initial data are in $L^{p/2}({\mathbb{R}}^d).$As a by-product we recover in dimension three the classical decay rate $t^{-\frac34}$ for $t\to+\…
We consider the compressible Navier-Stokes system describing the motion of a barotropic fluid with density dependent viscosity confined in a three-dimensional bounded domain $Ω$. We show the convergence of the weak solution to the compressible Navier-Stokes system to the strong solution to the compressible Euler system when the viscosity and the damping coefficients tend to zero.
We study cavitating self-similar solutions to compressible Navier-Stokes equations with degenerate density-dependent viscosity. We prove both existence of expanders and non-existence of small shrinkers.
We construct forward self-similar solutions (expanders) for the compressible Navier-Stokes equations. Some of these self-similar solutions are smooth, while others exhibit a singularity do to cavitation at the origin.
We introduce the notion of relative entropy for the weak solutions of the compressible Navier-Stokes system. We show that any finite energy weak solution satisfies a relative entropy inequality for any pair of sufficiently smooth test functions. As a corollary we establish weak-strong uniqueness principle for the compressible Navier-Stokes system.
In this paper, we study the low Mach number limit of the full compressible Navier-Stokes equations with revised Maxwell law. By applying the uniform estimation of the error system, we prove that the solutions of the full compressible Navier-Stokes equations with time relaxation converge to that of the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations as the Mach number tends to zero. Moreover, the convergence rates are also obtained.
We obtain the global large solutions to the compressible Navier-Stokes equations in $\mathbb{R}^2$. The solution is large in the sense that there is no smallness assumption applied to one component of the initial incompressible velocity.
We show the weak-strong uniqueness property for the compressible Navier-Stokes system with general non-monotone pressure law. A weak solution coincides with the strong solution emanating from the same initial data as long as the latter solution exists.
A free boundary problem for the one-dimensional compressible Navier-Stokes equations is investigated. The asymptotic stability of the viscous shock wave is established under some smallness conditions. The proof is given by an elementary energy estimate.
In this paper, we prove the energy conservation for the weak solutions of the compressible Navier-Stokes equations for any time $t>0$, under certain conditions. The results hold for the renormalized solutions of the equations with constant viscosities, as well as the weak solutions of the equations with degenerate viscosity. Our conditions do not depend on the dimensions. The energy may conserve on the vacuum for the compressible Navier-Stokes equations with constant viscosities. Our results are the first ones on the energy conservation for the weak solutions of the compressible Navier-Stokes …
In this paper we establish the uniform estimates of strong solutions with respect to the Mach number and the dielectric constant to the full compressible Navier-Stokes-Maxwell system in a bounded domain. Based on these uniform estimates, we obtain the convergence of the full compressible Navier-Stokes-Maxwell system to the incompressible magnetohydrodynamic equations for well-prepared data.
In this paper, we investigate the compressible Navier-Stokes equations with degenerate, density-dependent, viscosity coefficient driven by multiplicative stochastic noise. We consider three-dimensional periodic domain and prove that the family of weak martingale solutions is sequentially compact.
We are concerned about the barotropic compressible Navier-Stokes equations with density-dependent viscosities which may degenerate in vacuum. We show that any classical solution to barotropic compressible Navier-Stokes equations in bounded domains will blow up, when the initial density admits an isolated mass group and the viscousity coefficients satisfy some conditions. A new condition on viscosities is first put forward in this paper.
The global-in-time existence of weak solutions to the barotropic compressible quantum Navier-Stokes equations with damping is proved for large data in three dimensional space. The model consists of the compressible Navier-Stokes equations with degenerate viscosity, and a nonlinear third-order differential operator, with the quantum Bohm potential, and the damping terms. The global weak solutions to such system is shown by using the Faedo-Galerkin method and the compactness argument. This system is also a very important approximated system to the compressible Navier-Stokes equations. It will he…
This paper presents a new approach to the local well-posedness of the $1d$ compressible Navier-Stokes systems with rough initial data. Our approach is based on establishing some smoothing and Lipschitz-type estimates for the $1d$ parabolic equation with piecewise continuous coefficients.
The initial boundary value problems for compressible Navier-Stokes-Poisson is considered on a bounded domain in $\mathbb{R}^3$ in this paper. The global existence of smooth solutions near a given steady state for compressible Navier-Stokes-Poisson with physical boundary conditions is established with the exponential stability. An important feature is that the steady state (except velocity) and the background profile are allowed to be of large variation.
We prove weak-strong uniqueness results for the isentropic compressible Navier-Stokes system on the torus. In other words, we give conditions on a strong solution so that it is unique in a class of weak solutions. Known weak-strong uniqueness results are improved. Classical uniqueness results for this equation follow naturally.
In this paper, we construct a class of global large solution to the compressible Navier-Stokes equations in the whole space $\R^d$. Precisely speaking, our choice of special initial data whose $\dot{B}^{-1}_{\infty,\infty}$ norm can be arbitrarily large, namely, $||u_0||_{\dot{B}^{-1}_{\infty,\infty}}\gg 1$, allows to give rise to global-in-time solution to the compressible Navier-Stokes equations.
Consider the linear stability of the three dimensional isentropic compressible Navier-Stokes equations on $\mathbb{T}\times\mathbb{R}\times\mathbb{T}$. We prove the enhanced dissipation phenomenon for the linearized isentropic compressible Navier-Stokes equations around the Couette flow $(y, 0, 0)^\top$. Moreover, the lift-up phenomenon is also shown in this paper. Compared with the 3D incompressible Navier-Stokes equations [Ann. of Math.,185(2017), 541--608], the lift-up effect here is stronger due to the loss of the incompressible condition.
It is shown that the one-dimensional or two-dimensional radially symmetric isothermal compressible Navier-Stokes system has no non-trivial global smooth solutions if the initial density is compactly supported. This result is a generalization of Xin's work \cite{Xin98} to the isothermal case.
The $L^{p}$ theory for non-isentropic Navier-Stokes equations governing compressible viscous and heat-conductive gases is not yet proved completely so far, because the critical regularity cannot control all non linear coupling terms. In this paper, we pose an additional regularity assumption of low frequencies in $\mathbb{R}^d(d\geq 3)$, and then the sharp time-weighted inequality can be established, which leads to the time-decay estimates of global strong solutions in the $L^{p}$ critical Besov spaces. Precisely, we show that if the initial data belong to some Besov space $\dot{B}^{-s_{1}}_{2…
In this paper, the local well-posedness of strong solutions to the Cauchy problem of the isentropic compressible Navier-Stokes equations is proved with the initial date being allowed to have vacuum. The main contribution of this paper is that the well-posedness is established without assuming any compatibility condition on the initial data, which was widely used before in many literatures concerning the well-posedness of compressible Navier-Stokes equations in the presence of vacuum.
We consider the homogenization problem of the compressible Navier-Stokes equations in a bounded three dimensional domain perforated with very tiny holes. As the number of holes increases to infinity, we show that, if the size of the holes is small enough, the homogenized equations are the same as the compressible Navier-Stokes equations in the homogeneous domain---domain without holes. This coincides with the previous studies for the Stokes equations and the stationary Navier-Stokes equations. It is the first result of this kind in the instationary barotropic compressible setting. The main tec…
We show the uniqueness of particle paths of a velocity field, which solves the compressible isentropic Navier-Stokes equations in the half-space $\mathbb{R}_+^3$ with the Navier boundary condition. In particular, by means of energy estimates and the assumption of small energy we prove that the velocity field satisfies the necessary regularity needed to prove the uniqueness of particle paths.
In this work, we obtain the hydrostatic approximation by taking the small aspect ratio limit to the Navier-Stokes equations. The aspect ratio (the ratio of the depth to horizontal width) is a geometrical constraint in general large scale geophysical motions that the vertical scale is significantly smaller than horizontal. We use the versatile relative entropy inequality to prove rigorously the limit from the compressible Navier-Stokes equations to the compressible Primitive Equations. This is the first work to use relative entropy inequality for proving hydrostatic approximation and derive the…
