In three-dimensional critical percolation we study numerically the number of clusters, $N_Γ$, which intersect a given subset of bonds, $Γ$. If $Γ$ represents the interface between a subsystem and the environment, then $N_Γ$ is related to the entanglement entropy of the critical diluted quantum Ising model. Due to corners in $Γ$ there are singular corrections to $N_Γ$, which scale as $b_Γ \ln L_Γ$, $L_Γ$ being the linear size of $Γ$ and the prefactor, $b_Γ$, is found to be universal. This result indicates that logarithmic finite-size corrections exist in the free-energy of three-dimensional critical systems.
We study the number of clusters in two-dimensional (2d) critical percolation, N_Gamma, which intersect a given subset of bonds, Gamma. In the simplest case, when Gamma is a simple closed curve, N_Gamma is related to the entanglement entropy of the critical diluted quantum Ising model, in which Gamma represents the boundary between the subsystem and the environment. Due to corners in Gamma there are universal logarithmic corrections to N_Gamma, which are calculated in the continuum limit through conformal invariance, making use of the Cardy-Peschel formula. The exact formulas are confirmed by l…
The finite-size scaling behaviour for percolation and conduction is studied in two-dimensional triangular-shaped random resistor networks at the percolation threshold. The numerical simulations are performed using an efficient star-triangle algorithm. The percolation exponents, linked to the critical behaviour at corners, are in good agreement with the conformal results. The conductivity exponent, t', is found to be independent of the shape of the system. Its value is very close to recent estimates for the surface and bulk conductivity exponents.
A general method is proposed for predicting the asymptotic percolation threshold of networks with bottlenecks, in the limit that the sub-net mesh size goes to zero. The validity of this method is tested for bond percolation on filled checkerboard and "stack-of-triangle" lattices. Thresholds for the checkerboard lattices of different mesh sizes are estimated using the gradient percolation method, while for the triangular system they are found exactly using the triangle-triangle transformation. The values of the thresholds approach the asymptotic values of 0.64222 and 0.53993 respectively as the…
We report some novel properties of a square lattice filled with white sites, randomly occupied by black sites (with probability $p$). We consider connections up to second nearest neighbours, according to the following rule. Edge-sharing sites, i.e. nearest neighbours of similar type are always considered to belong to the same cluster. A pair of black corner-sharing sites, i.e. second nearest neighbours may form a 'cross-connection' with a pair of white corner-sharing sites. In this case assigning connected status to both pairs simultaneously, makes the system quasi-three dimensional, with inte…
For the two-dimensional Q-state Potts model at criticality, we consider Fortuin-Kasteleyn and spin clusters and study the average number N_Gamma of clusters that intersect a given contour Gamma. To leading order, N_Gamma is proportional to the length of the curve. Additionally, however, there occur logarithmic contributions related to the corners of Gamma. These are found to be universal and their size can be calculated employing techniques from conformal field theory. For the Fortuin-Kasteleyn clusters relevant to the thermal phase transition we find agreement with these predictions from larg…
The roughening of interfaces moving in inhomogeneous media is investigated by numerical integration of the phenomenological stochastic differential equation proposed by Kardar, Parisi, and Zhang [Phys. Rev. Lett. 56, 889, (1986)] with quenched noise (QKPZ). We express the evolution equations for the mean height and the roughness into two contributions: the local and the lateral one. We compare this two contributions with the ones obtained for two directed percolation deppining models (DPD): the Tang and Leschhorn model [Phys. Rev A 45, R8309 (1992)] and the Buldyrev et al. model [Phys. Rev. A …
We present the microscopic equation for the growing interface with quenched noise for the model first presented by Buldyrev et al. [Phys. Rev. A 45, R8313 (1992)]. The evolution equation for the height, the mean height, and the roughness are reached in a simple way. The microscopic equation allows us to express these equations in two contributions: the contact and the local one. We compare this two contributions with the ones obtained for the Tang and Leschhorn model [Phys. Rev A 45, R8309 (1992)] by Braunstein et al. [Physica A 266, 308 (1999)]. Even when the microscopic mechanisms are quiet …
The anisotropy parameter of two-dimensional equilibrium clusters of site percolation process in long-range self-affine correlated structures are studied numerically. We use a fractional Brownian Motion(FBM) statistic to produce both persistent and anti-persistent long-range correlations in 2-D models. It is seen that self affinity makes the shape of percolation clusters slightly more isotropic. Moreover, we find that the sign of correction to scaling term is determined by the nature of correlation. For persistent correlation the correction to scaling term adds a negative contribution to the an…
We compute the boundary entropy for bond percolation on the square lattice in the presence of a boundary loop weight, and prove explicit and exact expressions on a strip and on a cylinder of size $L$. For the cylinder we provide a rigorous asymptotic analysis which allows for the computation of finite-size corrections to arbitrary order. For the strip we provide exact expressions that have been verified using high-precision numerical analysis. Our rigorous and exact results corroborate an argument based on conformal field theory, in particular concerning universal logarithmic corrections for t…
We discuss correlations in percolation and recent contributions of Xiaojun Tan, Youjin Deng and Jesper Lykke Jacobsen in their paper "N-cluster correlations in four- and five-dimensional percolation," Frontiers of Physics 15, 41501 (July, 2020). This is a View and Perspective in Frontiers of Physics.
We consider a directed percolation process on an ${\cal M}$ x ${\cal N}$ rectangular lattice whose vertical edges are directed upward with an occupation probability y and horizontal edges directed toward the right with occupation probabilities x and 1 in alternate rows. We deduce a closed-form expression for the percolation probability P(x,y), the probability that one or more directed paths connect the lower-left and upper-right corner sites of the lattice. It is shown that P(x,y) is critical in the aspect ratio $a = {\cal M}/{\cal N}$ at a value $a_c =[1-y^2-x(1-y)^2]/2y^2$ where P(x,y) is di…
We study the holographic entanglement entropy of spatial regions with corners in the AdS4/BCFT3 correspondence by considering three dimensional boundary conformal field theories whose boundary is a timelike plane. We compute analytically the corner function corresponding to an infinite wedge having one edge on the boundary. A relation between this corner function and the holographic one point function of the stress tensor is observed. An analytic expression for the corner function of an infinite wedge having only its tip on the boundary is also provided. This formula requires to find the globa…
We propose Fabry-Perot cavity with corner reflectors instead of spherical mirrors to reduce the contribution of thermoelastic noise in the coating which is relatively large for spherical mirrors and which prevents the sensitivity better than Standard Quantum Limit (SQL) from being achieved in laser gravitational wave antenna. We demonstrate that thermo-refractive noise in corner reflector (CR) is substantially smaller than SQL. We show that the distortion of main mode of cavity with CR caused by tilt and displacement of one reflector is smaller than for cavity with spherical mirrors. We also c…
Casimir forces in a critical media are produced by spatial suppression of order parameter fluctuations. In this paper we address the question how fluctuations of a critical media relates the magnitude of critical Casimir interactions. Namely, for the Ising model we express the potential of critical Casimir interactions in terms of Fortuin-Kasteleyn site-bond correlated percolation clusters. These clusters are quantitative representation of fluctuations in the media. New Monte Carlo method for the computation of the Casimir force potential which is based on this relation is proposed. We verify …
In a D=2+1 quantum critical system, the entanglement entropy across a boundary with a corner contains a subleading logarithmic scaling term with a universal coefficient. It has been conjectured that this coefficient is, to leading order, proportional to the number of field components N in the associated O(N) continuum $ϕ^4$ field theory. Using density matrix renormalization group calculations combined with the powerful numerical linked cluster expansion technique, we confirm this scenario for the O(2) Wilson-Fisher fixed point in a striking way, through direct calculation at the quantum critic…
A two-step contagion model with a single seed serves as a cornerstone for understanding the critical behaviors and underlying mechanism of discontinuous percolation transitions induced by cascade dynamics. When the contagion spreads from a single seed, a cluster of infected and recovered nodes grows without any cluster merging process. However, when the contagion starts from multiple seeds of $O(N)$ where $N$ is the system size, a node weakened by a seed can be infected more easily when it is in contact with another node infected by a different pathogen seed. This contagion process can be view…
We study the logarithmic negativity and the moments of the partial transpose in the ground state of a two dimensional massless harmonic square lattice with nearest neighbour interactions for various configurations of adjacent domains. At leading order for large domains, the logarithmic negativity and the logarithm of the ratio between the generic moment of the partial transpose and the moment of the reduced density matrix at the same order satisfy an area law in terms of the length of the curve shared by the adjacent regions. We give numerical evidences that the coefficient of the area law ter…
The entanglement entropy for a quantum critical system across a boundary with a corner exhibits a sub-leading logarithmic scaling term with a scale-invariant coefficient. Using a Numerical Linked Cluster Expansion, we calculate this universal quantity for a square-lattice bilayer Heisenberg model at its quantum critical point. We find, for this 2+1 dimensional O(3) universality class, that it is thrice the value calculated previously for the Ising universality class. This relation gives substantial evidence that this coefficient provides a measure of the number of degrees of freedom of the the…

Universality is a cornerstone of theories of critical phenomena. It is well understood in most systems especially in the thermodynamic limit. Finite-size systems present additional challenges. Even in low dimensions, universality of the edge and corner contributions to free energies and response functions is less well understood. The question arises of how universality is maintained in correction-to-scaling in systems of the same universality class but with very different corner geometries. 2D geometries deliver the simplest such examples that can be constructed with and without corners. To in…
An analysis of water clustering is used to study the quasi-2D percolation transition of water adsorbed at planar hydrophilic surfaces. Above the critical temperature of the layering transition (quasi-2D liquid-vapor phase transition of adsorbed molecules) a percolation transition occurs at some threshold surface coverage, which increases with increasing temperature. The location of the percolation line is consistent with the existence of a percolation transition at the critical point. The percolation threshold at a planar surface is weakly sensitive to the size of the system when its lateral d…
We calculate the area, edge and corner Renyi entanglement entropies in the ground state of the transverse-field Ising model, on a simple-cubic lattice, by high-field and low-field series expansions. We find that while the area term is positive and the line term is negative as required by strong subadditivity, the corner contributions are positive in 3-dimensions. Analysis of the series suggests that the expansions converge up to the physical critical point from both sides. The leading area-law Renyi entropies match nicely from the high and low field expansions at the critical point, forming a …
We present a comprehensive and versatile theoretical framework to study site and bond percolation on clustered and correlated random graphs. Our contribution can be summarized in three main points. (i) We introduce a set of iterative equations that solve the exact distribution of the size and composition of components in finite size quenched or random multitype graphs. (ii) We define a very general random graph ensemble that encompasses most of the models published to this day, and also that permits to model structural properties not yet included in a theoretical framework. Site and bond perco…
The function of a real network depends not only on the reliability of its own components, but is affected also by the simultaneous operation of other real networks coupled with it. Robustness of systems composed of interdependent network layers has been extensively studied in recent years. However, the theoretical frameworks developed so far apply only to special models in the limit of infinite sizes. These methods are therefore of little help in practical contexts, given that real interconnected networks have finite size and their structures are generally not compatible with those of graph to…
Crossing probabilities for critical 2-D percolation on large but finite lattices have been derived via boundary conformal field theory. These predictions agree very well with numerical results. However, their derivation is heuristic and there is evidence of additional symmetries in the problem. This contribution gives a preliminary examination some unusual modular behavior of these quantities. In particular, the derivatives of the "horizontal" and "horizontal-vertical" crossing probabilities transform as a vector modular form, one component of which is an ordinary modular form and the other th…
The entanglement entropy in three-dimensional conformal field theories (CFTs) receives a logarithmic contribution characterized by a regulator-independent function $a(θ)$ when the entangling surface contains a sharp corner with opening angle $θ$. In the limit of a smooth surface ($θ\rightarrowπ$), this corner contribution vanishes as $a(θ)=σ\,(θ-π)^2$. In arXiv:1505.04804, we provided evidence for the conjecture that for any $d=3$ CFT, this corner coefficient $σ$ is determined by $C_T$, the coefficient appearing in the two-point function of the stress tensor. Here, we argue that this is a part…
Despite decades of research, the precise role of topological disorder in critical phenomena has yet to be fully understood. A major contribution has been the work by Barghathi and Vojta, which uses spatial correlations to explain puzzling earlier results. However, due to its reliance on coordination number fluctuations, their criterion cannot be applied to constant-coordination lattices, raising the question, for which classes of transitions this type of disorder can be a relevant perturbation. In order to cast light on this question, we investigate the non-equilibrium phase transition of the …
This work shows potentials for rapid self-organisation of sensor networks where nodes collaborate to relay messages to a common data collecting unit (sink node). The study problem is, in the sense of graph theory, to find a shortest path tree spanning a weighted graph. This is a well-studied problem where for example Dijkstra's algorithm provides a solution for non-negative edge weights. The present contribution shows by simulation examples that simple modifications of known distributed approaches here can provide significant improvements in performance. Phase transition phenomena, which are k…
We consider the random-bond Potts model in the large-$Q$ limit and calculate the excess entropy, $S_Γ$, of a contour, $Γ$, which is given by the mean number of Fortuin-Kasteleyn clusters which are crossed by $Γ$. In two dimensions $S_Γ$ is proportional to the length of $Γ$, to which - at the critical point - there are universal logarithmic corrections due to corners. These are calculated by applying techniques of conformal field theory and compared with the results of large scale numerical calculations. The central charge of the model is obtained from the corner contributions to the excess ent…
In a statistical cluster or loop model such as percolation, or more generally the Potts models or O(n) models, a pinch point is a single bulk point where several distinct clusters or loops touch. In a polygon P harboring such a model in its interior and with 2N sides exhibiting free/fixed side-alternating boundary conditions, "boundary" clusters anchor to the fixed sides of P. At the critical point and in the continuum limit, the density (i.e., frequency of occurrence) of pinch-point events between s distinct boundary clusters at a bulk point w in P is proportional to <psi_1^c(w_1)psi_1^c(w_2)…
