Let $σ$ be a non-unit Pisot substitution and let $α$ be the associated Pisot number. It is known that one can associate certain fractal tiles, so-called \emph{Rauzy fractals}, with $σ$. In our setting, these fractals are subsets of a certain open subring of the adèle ring $\mathbb{A}_{\mathbb{Q}(α)}$. We present several approaches on how to define Rauzy fractals and discuss the relations between them. In particular, we consider Rauzy fractals as the natural geometric objects of certain numeration systems, define them in terms of the one-dimensional realization of $σ$ and its dual (in the spirit of Arnoux and Ito), and view them as the dual of multi-component model sets for particular cut and project schemes. We also define stepped surfaces suited for non-unit Pisot substitutions. We provide basic topological and geometric properties of Rauzy fractals associated with non-unit Pisot substitutions, prove some tiling results for them, and provide relations to subshifts defined in terms of the periodic points of $σ$, to adic transformations, and a domain exchange. We illustrate our results by examples on two and three letter substitutions.
We prove the Pisot Conjecture for beta-substitutions: If beta is a Pisot number, the tiling dynamical system associated with the beta-substitution has pure discrete spectrum. As corollaries: (1) arithmetical coding of the hyperbolic solenoidal automorphism associated with the companion matrix of the minimal polynomial of any Pisot number is almost everywhere one-to-one; and (2) every Pisot number is weakly finitary.
The matrix of a substitution is not sufficient to completely determine the dynamics associated, even in simplest cases since there are many words with the same abelianization. In this paper we study the common points of the canonical broken lines associated to two different Pisot irreducible substitutions $σ_1$ and $σ_2$ having the same incidence matrix. We prove that if 0 is inner point to the Rauzy fractal associated to $σ_1$ these common points can be generated with a substitution on an alphabet of so-called "balanced blocks".
We set up a geometrical theory for the study of the dynamics of reducible Pisot substitutions. It is based on certain Rauzy fractals generated by duals of higher dimensional extensions of substitutions. We obtain under certain hypotheses geometric representations of stepped surfaces and related polygonal tilings, as well as self-replicating and periodic tilings made of Rauzy fractals. We apply our theory to an infinite family of substitutions. For this family, we analyze and interpret in a new combinatorial way the codings of a domain exchange defined on the associated fractal domains. We dedu…
We consider one-dimensional substitution tiling spaces where the dilatation (stretching factor) is a degree d Pisot number, and where the first rational Cech cohomology is d-dimensional. We construct examples of such "homological Pisot" substitutions that do not have pure discrete spectra. These examples are not unimodular, and we conjecture that the coincidence rank must always divide a power of the norm of the dilatation. To support this conjecture, we show that homological Pisot substitutions exhibit an Exact Regularity Property (ERP), in which the number of occurrences of a patch for a ret…
We give a sufficient geometric condition for a subshift to be measurably isomorphic to a domain exchange and to a translation on a torus. And for an irreducible unit Pisot substitution, we introduce a new topology on the discrete line and we give a simple necessary and sufficient condition for the symbolic system to have pure discrete spectrum. This condition gives rise to an algorithm based on computation of automata. To see the power of this criterion, we provide families of substitutions that satisfies the Pisot substitution conjecture: 1) $a \mapsto a^kbc$, $b \mapsto c$, $c \mapsto a$, fo…
In this article, we prove that for all pairs of primitive Pisot or uniform substitutions with the same dominating eigenvalue, there exists a finite set of block maps such that every block map between the corresponding subshifts is an element of this set, up to a shift.
We consider 1-dimensional, unimodular Pisot substitution tilings with three intervals, and discuss conditions under which pairs of such tilings are locally isomorhphic (LI), or mutually locally derivable (MDL). For this purpose, we regard the substitutions as homomorphisms of the underlying free group with three generators. Then, if two substitutions are conjugated by an inner automorphism of the free group, the two tilings are LI, and a conjugating outer automorphism between two substitutions can often be used to prove that the two tilings are MLD. We present several examples illustrating the…
We define a generic algorithmic framework to prove pure discrete spectrum for the substitutive symbolic dynamical systems associated with some infinite families of Pisot substitutions. We focus on the families obtained as finite products of the three-letter substitutions associated with the multidimensional continued fraction algorithms of Brun and Jacobi-Perron. Our tools consist in a reformulation of some combinatorial criteria (coincidence conditions), in terms of properties of discrete plane generation using multidimensional (dual) substitutions. We also deduce some topological and dynamic…
Sellami and Sirvent conjectured that the balanced pair algorithm fails for the following pair of Pisot substitutions: \[ φ_0: \begin{array}{l} a \mapsto abc b \mapsto a c \mapsto ac \end{array} \quad \text{ and } \quad φ_1: \begin{array}{l} a \mapsto cba b \mapsto a c \mapsto ca \end{array}. \] The conjecture stated the balanced pair algorithm fails because there is no initial balanced pair. In the present note we prove this conjecture using a method based on simultaneous coding of the pair of the fixed points of the morphisms.
We consider a two-parameter family of random substitutions and show certain combinatorial and topological properties they satisfy. We establish that they admit recognisable words at every level. As a consequence, we get that the subshifts they define are not topologically mixing. We then show that they satisfy a weaker mixing property using a numeration system arising from a sequence of lengths of inflated words. Moreover, we provide explicit bounds for the corresponding topological entropy in terms of the defining parameters $n$ and $p$.
We prove that if a primitive and non-periodic substitution is injective on initial letters, constant on final letters, and has Pisot inflation, then the R-action on the corresponding tiling space has pure discrete spectrum. As a consequence, all beta-substitutions for beta a Pisot simple Parry number have tiling dynamical systems with pure discrete spectrum, as do the Pisot systems arising, for example, from the Jacobi-Perron and Brun continued fraction expansions.
This paper uses a connection between bounded remainder sets in $\mathbb{R}^d$ and cut-and-project sets in $\mathbb{R}$ together with the fact that each one-dimensional Pisot substitution sequence is bounded distance equivalent to some lattice in order to construct several bounded remainder sets with fractal boundary. Moreover it is shown that there are cut-and-project sets being not bounded distance equivalent to each other even if they are locally indistinguishable, more precisely: even if they are contained in the same hull.
We consider the structure of Pisot substitution tiling spaces, in particular, the structure of those spaces for which the translation action does not have pure discrete spectrum. Such a space is always a measurable m-to-one cover of an action by translation on a group called the maximal equicontinuous factor. The integer m is the coincidence rank of the substitution and equals one if and only if translation on the tiling space has pure discrete spectrum. By considering factors intermediate between a tiling space and its maximal equicontinuous factor, we establish a lower bound on the cohomolog…
A substitution $\vp$ is strong Pisot if its abelianization matrix is non-singular and all eigenvalues except the Perron-Frobenius eigenvalue have modulus less than one. For strong Pisot $\vp$ that satisfies a no cycle condition and for which the translation flow on the tiling space $\T_\vp$ has pure discrete spectrum, we describe the collection $\T^P_\vp$ of pairs of proximal tilings in $\T_\vp$ in a natural way as a substitution tiling space. We show that if $ψ$ is another such substitution, then $\T_\vp $ and $\T_ψ$ are homeomorphic if and only if $\T^P_\vp$ and $\T^P_ψ$ are homeomorphic. We…
To a given Pisot unit $β$ we associate a finite abelian group whose size appears to be equal to the discriminant of $β$. We call it the Pisot group and find its representation in the two-sided $β$-compactum in the case of $β$ satisfying the relation $Fin(β)=\Bbb Z[β]\cap[0,1)$. As a motivation for the definition, we show that the Pisot group is the kernel of some important arithmetic coding of the toral automorphism given by the companion matrix naturally associated with $β$.
In this article we study symmetric subsets of Rauzy fractals of unimodular irreducible Pisot substitutions. The symmetry considered is reflection through the origin. Given an unimodular irreducible Pisot substitution, we consider the intersection of its Rauzy fractal with the Rauzy fractal of the reverse substitution. This set is symmetric and it is obtained by the balanced pair algorithm associated with both substitutions.
We prove an extension of the well-known Pisot substitution conjecture to the $S$-adic symbolic setting on two letters. The proof relies on the use of Rauzy fractals and on the fact that strong coincidences hold in this framework.
If phi is a Pisot substitution of degree d, then the inflation and substitution homeomorphism Phi on the tiling space T_Phi factors via geometric realization onto a d-dimensional solenoid. Under this realization, the collection of Phi-periodic asymptotic tilings corresponds to a finite set that projects onto the branch locus in a d-torus. We prove that if two such tiling spaces are homeomorphic, then the resulting branch loci are the same up to the action of certain affine maps on the torus.
Given an n-dimensional substitution whose associated linear expansion is unimodular and hyperbolic, we use elements of the one-dimensional integer Čech cohomology of the associated tiling space to construct a finite-to-one semi-conjugacy, called geometric realization, between the substitution induced dynamics and an invariant set of a hyperbolic toral automorphism. If the linear expansion satisfies a Pisot family condition and the rank of the module of generalized return vectors equals the generalized degree of the linear expansion, the image of geometric realization is the entire torus and co…
From the works of Rauzy and Thurston, we know how to construct (multiple) tilings of some Euclidean space using the conjugates of a Pisot unit $β$ and the greedy $β$-transformation. In this paper, we consider different transformations generating expansions in base $β$, including cases where the associated subshift is not sofic. Under certain mild conditions, we show that they give multiple tilings. We also give a necessary and sufficient condition for the tiling property, generalizing the weak finiteness property (W) for greedy $β$-expansions. Remarkably, the symmetric $β$-transformation does …
For a fairly general class of two-dimensional tiling substitutions, we prove that if the length expansion $β$ is a Pisot number, then the tilings defined by the substitution must be locally finite. We also give a simple example of a two-dimensional substitution on rectangular tiles, with a non-Pisot length expansion $β$, such that no tiling admitted by the substitution is locally finite. The proofs of both results are effectively one-dimensional and involve the idea of a certain type of generalized $β$-transformation.
One of the simplest non-Pisot substitution rules is investigated in its geometric version as a tiling with intervals of natural length as prototiles. Via a detailed renormalisation analysis of the pair correlation functions, we show that the diffraction measure cannot comprise any absolutely continuous component. This implies that the diffraction, apart from a trivial Bragg peak at the origin, is purely singular continuous. En route, we derive various geometric and algebraic properties of the underlying Delone dynamical system, which we expect to be relevant in other such systems as well.
It is well known that real numbers with a purely periodic decimal expansion are the rationals having, when reduced, a denominator coprime with 10. The aim of this paper is to extend this result to beta-expansions with a Pisot base beta which is not necessarily a unit: we characterize real numbers having a purely periodic expansion in such a base; this characterization is given in terms of an explicit set, called generalized Rauzy fractal, which is shown to be a graph-directed self-affine compact subset of non-zero measure which belongs to the direct product of Euclidean and p-adic spaces.
For a (non-unit) Pisot number $β$, several collections of tiles are associated with $β$-numeration. This includes an aperiodic and a periodic one made of Rauzy fractals, a periodic one induced by the natural extension of the $β$-transformation and a Euclidean one made of integral beta-tiles. We show that all these collections (except possibly the periodic translation of the central tile) are tilings if one of them is a tiling or, equivalently, the weak finiteness property (W) holds. We also obtain new results on rational numbers with purely periodic $β$-expansions; in particular, we calculate …
This paper studies geometric and spectral properties of $S$-adic shifts and their relation to continued fraction algorithms. These shifts are symbolic dynamical systems obtained by iterating infinitely many substitutions. Pure discrete spectrum for $S$-adic shifts and tiling properties of associated Rauzy fractals are established under a generalized Pisot assumption together with a geometric coincidence condition. These general results extend the scope of the Pisot substitution conjecture to the $S$-adic framework. They are applied to families of $S$-adic shifts generated by Arnoux-Rauzy as we…
We work with attracting subshifts generated by substitutions which are also irreducible parageometric automorphisms of free groups. For such a dynamical system, we construct a tree substitution to approximate the repelling real tree of the automorphism. We produce images of this tree inside the Rauzy fractal when the substitution is irreducible Pisot. We describe the contour of this tree and compute an interval exchange transformation of the circle covering the original substitution.
We show that, in any dimension greater than one, there are an abelian variety, a smooth rational variety and a Calabi-Yau manifold, with primitive birational automorphisms of first dynamical degree $>1$. We also show that there are smooth complex projective Calabi-Yau manifolds and smooth rational manifolds, of any even dimension, with primitive biregular automorphisms of positive topological entropy.
Any infinite sequence of substitutions with the same matrix of the Pisot type defines a symbolic dynamical system which is minimal. We prove that, to any such sequence, we can associate a compact set (Rauzy fractal) by projection of the stepped line associated with an element of the symbolic system on the contracting space of the matrix. We show that this Rauzy fractal depends continuously on the sequence of substitutions, and investigate some of its properties; in some cases, this construction gives a geometric model for the symbolic dynamical system.
For substitution satisfying Pisot, irreducible, unimodular condition, a tiling substitution plays a key role in construction of a stepped surface and Rauzy fractal. In this paper we will extend the method to hyperbolic automorphisms on the free group of rank 2 in some class, and obtain set equations of Rauzy fractals by virtue of a tiling substitution. We will also see that the domain exchange transformation on Rauzy fractal is just a two interval exchange transformation.
Let $β\in(1,2)$ be a Pisot unit and consider the symmetric $β$-expansions. We give a necessary and sufficient condition for the associated Rauzy fractals to form a tiling of the contractive hyperplane. For $β$ a $d$-Bonacci number, i.e., Pisot root of $x^d-x^{d-1}-\dots-x-1$ we show that the Rauzy fractals form a multiple tiling with covering degree $d-1$.
We prove that every free group of finite rank can be realized as the fundamental group of a planar Rauzy fractal associated with a 4-letter unimodular cubic Pisot substitution. This characterizes all countable fundamental groups for planar Rauzy fractals. We give an explicit construction relying on two operations on substitutions: symbolic splittings and conjugations by free group automorphisms.
The well-known plastic number substitution gives rise to a ternary inflation tiling of the real line whose inflation factor is the smallest Pisot-Vijayaraghavan number. The corresponding dynamical system has pure point spectrum, and the associated control point sets can be described as regular model sets whose windows in two-dimensional internal space are Rauzy fractals with a complicated structure. Here, we calculate the resulting pure point diffraction measure via a Fourier matrix cocycle, which admits a closed formula for the Fourier transform of the Rauzy fractals, via a rapidly converging…
From Rauzy graph Rauzy Scheme can be obtaining by uniting sequence of vertices of ingoing and outgoing degree 1 by arches. This notion is a tool to describe Rauzy graph behavior. For morphic superword we prove periodicity of Rauzy schemes. This fact has consequence in discrete dynamic systems and logic. This fact is also generalization of fact that quadratic irrationals have periodic chain fractions.
