For a fairly general class of two-dimensional tiling substitutions, we prove that if the length expansion $β$ is a Pisot number, then the tilings defined by the substitution must be locally finite. We also give a simple example of a two-dimensional substitution on rectangular tiles, with a non-Pisot length expansion $β$, such that no tiling admitted by the substitution is locally finite. The proofs of both results are effectively one-dimensional and involve the idea of a certain type of generalized $β$-transformation.
This paper is intended to provide an introduction to the theory of substitution tilings. For our purposes, tiling substitution rules are divided into two broad classes: geometric and combinatorial. Geometric substitution tilings include self-similar tilings such as the well-known Penrose tilings; for this class there is a substantial body of research in the literature. Combinatorial substitutions are just beginning to be examined, and some of what we present here is new. We give numerous examples, mention selected major results, discuss connections between the two classes of substitutions, inc…
Starting with a substitution tiling, we demonstrate a method for constructing infinitely many new substitution tilings. Each of these new tilings is derived from a graph iterated function system and the tiles have fractal boundary. We show that each of the new tilings is mutually locally derivable to the original tiling. Thus, at the tiling space level, the new substitution rules are expressing geometric and combinatorial, rather than topological, features of the original. Our method is easy to apply to particular substitution tilings, permits experimentation, and can be used to construct bord…
We consider tiling dynamical systems and topological conjugacies between them. We prove that the criterion of being finite type is invariant under topological conjugacy. For substitution tiling systems under rather general conditions, including the Penrose and pinwheel systems, we show that substitutions are invertible and that conjugacies are generalized sliding block codes.
This paper concerns self-similar tilings in dimension 2. We consider the number of occurrences of a given tile in any domain bounded by a Jordan curve. For a large class of self-similar tilings, including most known examples, we give estimates of the oscillation of this number of occurrences around its average frequency times the total number of tiles in the domain, which depend only on the Jordan curve.
We show that any primitive substitution tiling of the plane creates a separated net which is biLipschitz to the integer lattice. Then we show that if H is a primitive Pisot substitution in an Euclidean space, for every separated net Y, that corresponds to some tiling of the tiling space, there exists a bijection F between Y and the integer lattice that translate every element of Y a bounded distance. As a corollary we get that we have such an F for any separated net that corresponds to a Penrose Tiling. The proofs rely on results of Laczkovich, and Burago and Kleiner.
We introduce a new general framework for constructing tilings of Euclidean space, which we call multiscale substitution tilings. These tilings are generated by substitution schemes on a finite set of prototiles, in which multiple distinct scaling constants are allowed. This is in contrast to the standard case of the well-studied substitution tilings which includes examples such as the Penrose and the pinwheel tilings. Under an additional irrationality assumption on the scaling constants, our construction defines a new class of tilings and tiling spaces, which are intrinsically different from t…
We introduce a new class of noncommutative spectral triples on Kellendonk's $C^*$-algebra associated with a nonperiodic substitution tiling. These spectral triples are constructed from fractal trees on tilings, which define a geodesic distance between any two tiles in the tiling. Since fractals typically have infinite Euclidean length, the geodesic distance is defined using Perron-Frobenius theory, and is self-similar with scaling factor given by the Perron-Frobenius eigenvalue. We show that each spectral triple is $θ$-summable, and respects the hierarchy of the substitution system. To elucida…
We consider tilings of Euclidean spaces by polygons or polyhedra, in particular, tilings made by a substitution process, such as the Penrose tilings of the plane. We define an isomorphism invariant related to a subgroup of rotations and compute it for various examples. We also extend our analysis to more general dynamical systems.
We study nonperiodic tilings of the line obtained by a projection method with an interval projection structure. We obtain a geometric characterisation of all interval projection tilings that admit substitution rules and describe the set of substitution rules for each such a tiling. We show that each substitution tiling admits a countably infinite number of nonequivalent substitution rules. We also provide a complete description of all tilings of the line and half line with an interval projection structure that are fixed by a substitution rule. Finally, we discuss how our results relate to reno…
We consider the scaling properties characterizing the hyperuniformity (or anti-hyperuniformity) of long wavelength fluctuations in a broad class of one-dimensional substitution tilings. We present a simple argument that predicts the exponent $α$ governing the scaling of Fourier intensities at small wavenumbers, tilings with $α>0$ being hyperuniform, and confirm with numerical computations that the predictions are accurate for quasiperiodic tilings, tilings with singular continuous spectra, and limit-periodic tilings. Tilings with quasiperiodic or singular continuous spectra can be constructed …
We introduce a procedure for establishing pure discrete spectrum for substitution tiling systems of Pisot family type and illustrate with several examples.
Quasiperiodic tilings are often considered as structure models of quasicrystals. In this context, it is important to study the nature of the diffraction measures for tilings. In this article, we investigate the diffraction measures for S-adic tilings in R^d, which are constructed from a family of geometric substitution rules. In particular, we firstly give a sufficient condition for the absolutely continuous component of the diffraction measure for an S-adic tiling to be zero. Next, we prove this sufficient condition for "almost all" binary block-substitution cases and thus prove the absence o…
We investigate substitution subshifts and tiling dynamical systems arising from the substitutions (1) θ: 0 \rightarrow 001,1 \rightarrow 11001 and (2) η: 0 \rightarrow 001,1 \rightarrow 11100. We show that the substitution subshifts arising from θand ηhave minimal self-joinings and are mildly mixing. We also give a criterion for 1-dimensional tiling systems arising from θor ηto have minimal self-joinings. We apply this to obtain examples of mildly mixing 1-dimensional tiling systems.
We consider substitution tilings in R^d that give rise to point sets that are not bounded displacement (BD) equivalent to a lattice and study the cardinality of BD(X), the set of distinct BD class representatives in the corresponding tiling space X. We prove a sufficient condition under which the tiling space contains continuously many distinct BD classes and present such an example in the plane. In particular, we show here for the first time that this cardinality can be greater than one.
We will show that an equivalence relation on a Cantor set arising from a two-dimensional substitution tiling by polygons is affable in the sense of Giordano, Putnam and Skau.
We prove that for the uniquely ergodic ${\bf R}^d$ action associated with a primitive substitution tiling of finite local complexity, every measurable eigenfunction coincides with a continuous function almost everywhere. Thus, topological weak-mixing is equivalent to measure-theoretic weak-mixing for such actions. If the expansion map for the substitution is a pure dilation by $θ>1$ and the substitution has a fixed point, then failure of weak-mixing is equivalent to $θ$ being a Pisot number.
We consider 1-dimensional, unimodular Pisot substitution tilings with three intervals, and discuss conditions under which pairs of such tilings are locally isomorhphic (LI), or mutually locally derivable (MDL). For this purpose, we regard the substitutions as homomorphisms of the underlying free group with three generators. Then, if two substitutions are conjugated by an inner automorphism of the free group, the two tilings are LI, and a conjugating outer automorphism between two substitutions can often be used to prove that the two tilings are MLD. We present several examples illustrating the…
Anderson and Putnam showed that the cohomology of a substitution tiling space may be computed by collaring tiles to obtain a substitution which ``forces its border.'' One can then represent the tiling space as an inverse limit of an inflation and substitution map on a cellular complex formed from the collared tiles; the cohomology of the tiling space is computed as the direct limit of the homomorphism induced by inflation and substitution on the cohomology of the complex. For one-dimensional substitution tiling spaces, we describe a modification of the Anderson-Putnam complex on collared tiles…
We show that Kellendonk's tiling semigroup of an FLC substitution tiling is self-similar, in the sense of Bartholdi, Grigorchuk and Nekrashevych. We extend the notion of the limit space of a self-similar group to the setting of self-similar semigroups, and show that it is homeomorphic to the Anderson--Putnam complex for such substitution tilings, with natural self-map induced by the substitution. Thus, the inverse limit of the limit space, given by the limit solenoid of the self-similar semigroup, is homeomorphic to the translational hull of the tiling.
The squiral inflation rule is equivalent to a bijective block substitution rule and leads to an interesting lattice dynamical system under the action of $\mathbb{Z}^{2}$. In particular, its balanced version has purely singular continuous diffraction. The dynamical spectrum is of mixed type, with pure point and singular continuous components. We present a constructive proof that admits a generalisation to bijective block substitutions of trivial height on $\mathbb{Z}^{d}$.
A relatively simple substitution for the Robinson tilings is presented, which requires only 56 tiles up to translation. In this substitution, due to Joan M. Taylor, neighboring tiles are substituted by partially overlapping patches of tiles. We show that this overlapping substitution gives rise to a normal primitive substitution as well, implying that the Robinson tilings form a model set and thus have pure point diffraction. This substitution is used to compute the Cech cohomology of the hull of the Robinson tilings via the Anderson-Putnam method, and also the dynamical zeta function of the s…
In this paper we prove that, for any integer $d>0$, every linearly repetitive Delone set in the Euclidean $d$-space $\RR^d$ is equivalent, up to a bi-Lipschitz homeomorphism, to the integer lattice $\ZZ^d$. In the particular case when the Delone set $X$ in $\RR^d$ comes from a primitive substitution tiling of $\RR^d$, we give a condition on the eigenvalues of the substitution matrix which implies the existence of a homeomorphism with bounded displacement from $X$ to the lattice lattice $λ\ZZ^d$ for some positive $λ$. This condition includes primitive Pisot substitution tilings but also concern…
We introduce a GUI fronted program that can compute combinatorial properties and topological invariants of recognisable and primitive symbolic substitutions on finite alphabets and their associated tiling spaces. We introduce theory from the study of aperiodic 1-dimensional tilings along with pseudocode highlighting the algorithms that we have implemented into the GUI. Grout is written using C++ and its standard library.
Every sufficiently regular space of tilings of $\R^d$ has at least one pair of distinct tilings that are asymptotic under translation in all the directions of some open $(d-1)$-dimensional hemisphere. If the tiling space comes from a substitution, there is a way of defining a location on such tilings at which asymptoticity `starts'. This leads to the definition of the {\em branch locus} of the tiling space: this is a subspace of the tiling space, of dimension at most $d-1$, that summarizes the `asymptotic in at least a half-space' behavior in the tiling space. We prove that if a $d$-dimensiona…
We study the diagonals of two-dimensional tilings generated by direct product substitutions. The properties of these diagonals are primarily determined by the eigenvalues of the substitution matrix, but also the order of the letters in the substitution plays a role. We show that the diagonals may fail to be uniformly recurrent, and that the frequencies of letters on the diagonal may not exist. We also highlight the connection with the density of coincidences and overlap distributions.
We study statistics of tiles in random incommensurable Kakutani sequences of partitions in $\mathbb{R}^d$. We provide explicit formulas that illustrate the dependence on the combinatorial structure, the volumes of the participating tiles and the entropy of the partitions in the underlying random substitution system. These improve previous results for non-random Kakutani partitions and multiscale substitution tilings, and imply a gap distribution formula for Delone sets associated with multiscale substitution tilings of the real line.
We consider primitive substitution tilings on R^d whose expansion maps are unimodular. We assume that all the eigenvalues of the expansion maps are algebraic conjugates with the same multiplicity. In this case, we can construct a cut-and-project scheme with a Euclidean internal space. Under some additional condition, we show that if the substitution tiling has pure discrete spectrum, then the corresponding representative point sets are regular model sets in that cut-and-project scheme.
We prove that if a primitive and non-periodic substitution is injective on initial letters, constant on final letters, and has Pisot inflation, then the R-action on the corresponding tiling space has pure discrete spectrum. As a consequence, all beta-substitutions for beta a Pisot simple Parry number have tiling dynamical systems with pure discrete spectrum, as do the Pisot systems arising, for example, from the Jacobi-Perron and Brun continued fraction expansions.
Anderson and Putnam showed that the cohomology of a substitution tiling space may be computed by collaring tiles to obtain a substitution which "forces its border." One can then represent the tiling space as an inverse limit of an inflation and substitution map on a cellular complex formed from the collared tiles; the cohomology of the tiling space is computed as the direct limit of the homomorphism induced by inflation and substitution on the cohomology of the complex. In earlier work, Barge and Diamond described a modification of the Anderson-Putnam complex on collared tiles for one-dimensio…
We develop the connection of Berg partitions with special substitution tilings of two tiles. We obtain a new proof that the number of Berg partitions with a fixed connectivity matrix is equal to half of the sum of its entries, \cite{S-W}. This approach together with the formula of Séébold \cite{Seb}, for the number of substitutions preserving a given Sturmian sequence, shows that all of the combinatorial substitutions can be realized geometrically as Berg partitions. We treat Sturmian tilings as intersection tilings of bi-partitions. Using the symmetries of bi-partitions we obtain geometricall…
We consider self-affine tiling substitutions in Euclidean space and the corresponding tiling dynamical systems. It is well-known that in the primitive case the dynamical system is uniquely ergodic. We investigate invariant measures when the substitution is not primitive, and the tiling dynamical system is non-minimal. We prove that all ergodic invariant probability measures are supported on minimal components, but there are other natural ergodic invariant measures, which are infinite. Under some mild assumptions, we completely characterize $σ$-finite invariant measures which are positive and f…
We study the topology and dynamics of subshifts and tiling spaces associated to non-primitive substitutions in one dimension. We identify a property of a substitution, which we call tameness, in the presence of which most of the possible pathological behaviours of non-minimal substitutions cannot occur. We find a characterization of tameness, and use this to prove a slightly stronger version of a result of Durand, which says that the subshift of a minimal substitution is topologically conjugate to the subshift of a primitive substitution. We then extend to the non-minimal setting a result obta…
We derive a homeomorphism invariant for those tiling spaces which are made by rather general substitution rules on polygonal tiles, including those tilings, like the pinwheel, which contain tiles in infinitely many orientations. The invariant is a quotient of Cech cohomology, is easily computed directly from the substitution rule, and distinguishes many examples, including most pinwheel-like tiling spaces. We also introduce a module structure on cohomology which is very convenient as well as of intuitive value.
Given a finite set ${S_1...,S_k}$ of substitution maps acting on a certain finite number (up to translations) of tiles in $\rd$, we consider the multi-substitution tiling space associated to each sequence $\bar a\in {1,...,k}^{\mathbb{N}}$. The action by translations on such spaces gives rise to uniquely ergodic dynamical systems. In this paper we investigate the rate of convergence for ergodic limits of patches frequencies and prove that these limits vary continuously with $\bar a$.
We compute the Cech cohomology with integer coefficients of one-dimensional tiling spaces arising from not just one, but several different substitutions, all acting on the same set of tiles. These calculations involve the introduction of a universal version of the Anderson-Putnam complex. We show that, under a certain condition on the substitutions, the projective limit of this universal Anderson-Putnam complex is isomorphic to the tiling space, and we introduce a simplified universal Anderson-Putnam complex that can be used to compute Cech cohomology. We then use this simplified complex to pl…
Given an n-dimensional substitution whose associated linear expansion is unimodular and hyperbolic, we use elements of the one-dimensional integer Čech cohomology of the associated tiling space to construct a finite-to-one semi-conjugacy, called geometric realization, between the substitution induced dynamics and an invariant set of a hyperbolic toral automorphism. If the linear expansion satisfies a Pisot family condition and the rank of the module of generalized return vectors equals the generalized degree of the linear expansion, the image of geometric realization is the entire torus and co…
We investigate the dynamics of substitution subshifts and their associated tiling spaces. For a given subshift, the associated tiling spaces are all homeomorphic, but their dynamical properties may differ. We give criteria for such a tiling space to be weakly mixing, and for the dynamics of two such spaces to be topologically conjugate.
The Exact Regularity Property was introduced recently as a property of homological Pisot substitutions in one dimension. In this paper, we consider exact regularity for arbitrary tiling spaces. Let ${T}$ be a $d$ dimensional repetitive tiling, and let $Ω_{T}$ be its hull. If $\check H^d(Ω_{T}, Q) = Q^k$, then there exist $k$ patches whose appearance govern the number of appearances of every other patch. This gives uniform estimates on the convergence of all patch frequencies to the ergodic limit. If the tiling ${T}$ comes from a substitution, then we can quantify that convergence rate. If ${T}…
Suppose that f and g are Markov surjections, each defined on a wedge of circles, each fixing the branch point and having the branch point as the only critical value. We show that if the points in the inverse limit spaces associated with f and g corresponding to the branch point are distinguished then these inverse limit spaces are homeomorphic if and only if the substitutions associated with f and g are weakly equivalent. This, and related results, are applied to one-dimensional substitution tiling spaces, one-dimensional unstable manifolds of hyperbolic sets, and inverse limits of tent maps w…
We consider substitution tilings and Delone sets without the assumption of finite local complexity (FLC). We first give a sufficient condition for tiling dynamical systems to be uniquely ergodic and a formula for the measure of cylinder sets. We then obtain several results on their ergodic-theoretic properties, notably absence of strong mixing and conditions for existence of eigenvalues, which have number-theoretic consequences. In particular, if the set of eigenvalues of the expansion matrix is totally non-Pisot, then the tiling dynamical system is weakly mixing. Further, we define the notion…
We consider two families of planar self-similar tilings of different nature: the tilings consisting of translated copies of the fractal sets defined by an iterated function system, and the tilings obtained as a geometrical realization of a topological substitution (an object of purely combinatorial nature). We establish a link between the two families in a specific case, by defining an explicit topological substitution and by proving that it generates the same tilings as those associated with the Tribonacci Rauzy fractal.
Under suitable conditions, a substitution tiling gives rise to a Smale space, from which three equivalence relations can be constructed, namely the stable, unstable, and asymptotic equivalence relations. We denote with $S$, $U$, and $A$ their corresponding $C^*$-algebras in the sense of Renault. In this article we show that the $K$-theories of $S$ and $U$ can be computed from the cohomology and homology of a single cochain complex with connecting maps for tilings of the line and of the plane. Moreover, we provide formulas to compute the $K$-theory for these three $C^*$-algebras. Furthermore, w…
There is a growing body of results in the theory of discrete point sets and tiling systems giving conditions under which such systems are pure point diffractive. Here we look at the opposite direction: what can we infer about a discrete point set or tiling, defined through a primitive substitution system, given that it is pure point diffractive? Our basic objects are Delone multisets and tilings, which are self-replicating under a primitive substitution system of affine mappings with a common expansive map $Q$. Our first result gives a partial answer to a question of Lagarias and Wang: we char…
For a finite symmetry group $G$ of an aperiodic substitution tiling system $(\p,ω)$, we show that the crossed product of the tiling C*-algebra $\Aw$ by $G$ has real rank zero, tracial rank one, a unique trace, and that order on its K-theory is determined by the trace. We also show that the action of $G$ on $\Aw$ satisfies the weak Rokhlin property, and that it also satisfies the tracial Rokhlin property provided that $\Aw$ has tracial rank zero. In the course of proving the latter we show that $\Aw$ is finitely generated. We also provide a link between $\Aw$ and the AF algebra Connes associate…
The paper establishes an equivalence between pure point diffraction and certain types of model sets, called inter model sets, in the context of substitution point sets and substitution tilings. The key ingredients are a new type of coincidence condition in substitution point sets, which we call algebraic coincidence, and the use of a recent characterization of model sets through dynamical systems associated with the point sets or tilings.
A substitution $\vp$ is strong Pisot if its abelianization matrix is non-singular and all eigenvalues except the Perron-Frobenius eigenvalue have modulus less than one. For strong Pisot $\vp$ that satisfies a no cycle condition and for which the translation flow on the tiling space $\T_\vp$ has pure discrete spectrum, we describe the collection $\T^P_\vp$ of pairs of proximal tilings in $\T_\vp$ in a natural way as a substitution tiling space. We show that if $ψ$ is another such substitution, then $\T_\vp $ and $\T_ψ$ are homeomorphic if and only if $\T^P_\vp$ and $\T^P_ψ$ are homeomorphic. We…
We generalise the notion of a Barge-Diamond complex, in the one-dimensional case, to a mixed system of tiling substitutions. This gives a way of describing the associated tiling space as an inverse limit of Barge-Diamond complexes. We give an effective method for calculating the Čech cohomology of the tiling space via an exact sequence relating the associated sequence of substitution matrices and certain subcomplexes appearing in the approximants. As an application, we show that there exists a system of three substitutions on two letters which exhibit an uncountable collection of minimal tilin…
In this second paper, we study the case of substitution tilings of R^d. The substitution on tiles induces substitutions on the faces of the tiles of all dimensions j=0, ..., d-1. We reconstruct the tiling's equivalence relation in a purely combinatorial way using the AF-relations given by the lower dimensional substitutions. We define a Bratteli multi-diagram B which is made of the Bratteli diagrams B^j, j=0, ..., d, of all those substitutions. The set of infinite paths in B^d is identified with the canonical transversal Xi of the tiling. Any such path has a "border", which is a set of tails i…
We consider the structure of Pisot substitution tiling spaces, in particular, the structure of those spaces for which the translation action does not have pure discrete spectrum. Such a space is always a measurable m-to-one cover of an action by translation on a group called the maximal equicontinuous factor. The integer m is the coincidence rank of the substitution and equals one if and only if translation on the tiling space has pure discrete spectrum. By considering factors intermediate between a tiling space and its maximal equicontinuous factor, we establish a lower bound on the cohomolog…
We define 2-dimensional topological substitutions. A tiling of the Euclidean plane, or of the hyperbolic plane, is substitutive if the underlying 2-complex can be obtained by iteration of a 2-dimensional topological substitution. We prove that there is no primitive substitutive tiling of the hyperbolic plane $\mathbb{H}^2$. However, we give an example of substitutive tiling of $\Hyp^2$ which is non-primitive.
If phi is a Pisot substitution of degree d, then the inflation and substitution homeomorphism Phi on the tiling space T_Phi factors via geometric realization onto a d-dimensional solenoid. Under this realization, the collection of Phi-periodic asymptotic tilings corresponds to a finite set that projects onto the branch locus in a d-torus. We prove that if two such tiling spaces are homeomorphic, then the resulting branch loci are the same up to the action of certain affine maps on the torus.
