From the works of Rauzy and Thurston, we know how to construct (multiple) tilings of some Euclidean space using the conjugates of a Pisot unit $β$ and the greedy $β$-transformation. In this paper, we consider different transformations generating expansions in base $β$, including cases where the associated subshift is not sofic. Under certain mild conditions, we show that they give multiple tilings. We also give a necessary and sufficient condition for the tiling property, generalizing the weak finiteness property (W) for greedy $β$-expansions. Remarkably, the symmetric $β$-transformation does not satisfy this condition when $β$ is the smallest Pisot number or the Tribonacci number. This means that the Pisot conjecture on tilings cannot be extended to the symmetric $β$-transformation. Closely related to these (multiple) tilings are natural extensions of the transformations, which have many nice properties: they are invariant under the Lebesgue measure; under certain conditions, they provide Markov partitions of the torus; they characterize the numbers with purely periodic expansion, and they allow determining any digit in an expansion without knowing the other digits.
For a (non-unit) Pisot number $β$, several collections of tiles are associated with $β$-numeration. This includes an aperiodic and a periodic one made of Rauzy fractals, a periodic one induced by the natural extension of the $β$-transformation and a Euclidean one made of integral beta-tiles. We show that all these collections (except possibly the periodic translation of the central tile) are tilings if one of them is a tiling or, equivalently, the weak finiteness property (W) holds. We also obtain new results on rational numbers with purely periodic $β$-expansions; in particular, we calculate …
This paper studies tilings related to the beta-transformation when beta is a Pisot number (that is not supposed to be a unit). Then it applies the obtained results to study the set of rational numbers having a purely periodic beta-expansion. Special focus is given to some quadratic examples.
We consider the structure of Pisot substitution tiling spaces, in particular, the structure of those spaces for which the translation action does not have pure discrete spectrum. Such a space is always a measurable m-to-one cover of an action by translation on a group called the maximal equicontinuous factor. The integer m is the coincidence rank of the substitution and equals one if and only if translation on the tiling space has pure discrete spectrum. By considering factors intermediate between a tiling space and its maximal equicontinuous factor, we establish a lower bound on the cohomolog…
A substitution $\vp$ is strong Pisot if its abelianization matrix is non-singular and all eigenvalues except the Perron-Frobenius eigenvalue have modulus less than one. For strong Pisot $\vp$ that satisfies a no cycle condition and for which the translation flow on the tiling space $\T_\vp$ has pure discrete spectrum, we describe the collection $\T^P_\vp$ of pairs of proximal tilings in $\T_\vp$ in a natural way as a substitution tiling space. We show that if $ψ$ is another such substitution, then $\T_\vp $ and $\T_ψ$ are homeomorphic if and only if $\T^P_\vp$ and $\T^P_ψ$ are homeomorphic. We…
We prove the Pisot Conjecture for beta-substitutions: If beta is a Pisot number, the tiling dynamical system associated with the beta-substitution has pure discrete spectrum. As corollaries: (1) arithmetical coding of the hyperbolic solenoidal automorphism associated with the companion matrix of the minimal polynomial of any Pisot number is almost everywhere one-to-one; and (2) every Pisot number is weakly finitary.
If phi is a Pisot substitution of degree d, then the inflation and substitution homeomorphism Phi on the tiling space T_Phi factors via geometric realization onto a d-dimensional solenoid. Under this realization, the collection of Phi-periodic asymptotic tilings corresponds to a finite set that projects onto the branch locus in a d-torus. We prove that if two such tiling spaces are homeomorphic, then the resulting branch loci are the same up to the action of certain affine maps on the torus.
We consider 1-dimensional, unimodular Pisot substitution tilings with three intervals, and discuss conditions under which pairs of such tilings are locally isomorhphic (LI), or mutually locally derivable (MDL). For this purpose, we regard the substitutions as homomorphisms of the underlying free group with three generators. Then, if two substitutions are conjugated by an inner automorphism of the free group, the two tilings are LI, and a conjugating outer automorphism between two substitutions can often be used to prove that the two tilings are MLD. We present several examples illustrating the…
We consider self-affine tilings in the Euclidean space and the associated tiling dynamical systems, namely, the translation action on the orbit closure of the given tiling. We investigate the spectral properties of the system. It turns out that the presence of the discrete component depends on the algebraic properties of the eigenvalues of the expansion matrix $ϕ$ for the tiling. Assuming that $ϕ$ is diagonalizable over $\C$ and all its eigenvalues are algebraic conjugates of the same multiplicity, we show that the dynamical system has a relatively dense discrete spectrum if and only if it is …
We prove that if a primitive and non-periodic substitution is injective on initial letters, constant on final letters, and has Pisot inflation, then the R-action on the corresponding tiling space has pure discrete spectrum. As a consequence, all beta-substitutions for beta a Pisot simple Parry number have tiling dynamical systems with pure discrete spectrum, as do the Pisot systems arising, for example, from the Jacobi-Perron and Brun continued fraction expansions.
Let $β\in(1,2)$ be a Pisot unit and consider the symmetric $β$-expansions. We give a necessary and sufficient condition for the associated Rauzy fractals to form a tiling of the contractive hyperplane. For $β$ a $d$-Bonacci number, i.e., Pisot root of $x^d-x^{d-1}-\dots-x-1$ we show that the Rauzy fractals form a multiple tiling with covering degree $d-1$.
Given an n-dimensional substitution whose associated linear expansion is unimodular and hyperbolic, we use elements of the one-dimensional integer Čech cohomology of the associated tiling space to construct a finite-to-one semi-conjugacy, called geometric realization, between the substitution induced dynamics and an invariant set of a hyperbolic toral automorphism. If the linear expansion satisfies a Pisot family condition and the rank of the module of generalized return vectors equals the generalized degree of the linear expansion, the image of geometric realization is the entire torus and co…
It is well known that real numbers with a purely periodic decimal expansion are the rationals having, when reduced, a denominator coprime with 10. The aim of this paper is to extend this result to beta-expansions with a Pisot base beta which is not necessarily a unit: we characterize real numbers having a purely periodic expansion in such a base; this characterization is given in terms of an explicit set, called generalized Rauzy fractal, which is shown to be a graph-directed self-affine compact subset of non-zero measure which belongs to the direct product of Euclidean and p-adic spaces.
We set up a geometrical theory for the study of the dynamics of reducible Pisot substitutions. It is based on certain Rauzy fractals generated by duals of higher dimensional extensions of substitutions. We obtain under certain hypotheses geometric representations of stepped surfaces and related polygonal tilings, as well as self-replicating and periodic tilings made of Rauzy fractals. We apply our theory to an infinite family of substitutions. For this family, we analyze and interpret in a new combinatorial way the codings of a domain exchange defined on the associated fractal domains. We dedu…
We study rational numbers with purely periodic Rényi $β$-expansions. For bases $β$ satisfying $β^2=aβ+b$ with $b$ dividing $a$, we give a necessary and sufficient condition for $γ(β)=1$, i.e., that all rational numbers $p/q\in[0,1)$ with $\gcd(q,b)=1$ have a purely periodic $β$-expansion. A simple algorithm for determining the value of $γ(β)$ for all quadratic Pisot numbers $β$ is described.
We consider one-dimensional substitution tiling spaces where the dilatation (stretching factor) is a degree d Pisot number, and where the first rational Cech cohomology is d-dimensional. We construct examples of such "homological Pisot" substitutions that do not have pure discrete spectra. These examples are not unimodular, and we conjecture that the coincidence rank must always divide a power of the norm of the dilatation. To support this conjecture, we show that homological Pisot substitutions exhibit an Exact Regularity Property (ERP), in which the number of occurrences of a patch for a ret…
Let $σ$ be a non-unit Pisot substitution and let $α$ be the associated Pisot number. It is known that one can associate certain fractal tiles, so-called \emph{Rauzy fractals}, with $σ$. In our setting, these fractals are subsets of a certain open subring of the adèle ring $\mathbb{A}_{\mathbb{Q}(α)}$. We present several approaches on how to define Rauzy fractals and discuss the relations between them. In particular, we consider Rauzy fractals as the natural geometric objects of certain numeration systems, define them in terms of the one-dimensional realization of $σ$ and its dual (in the spiri…
For a fairly general class of two-dimensional tiling substitutions, we prove that if the length expansion $β$ is a Pisot number, then the tilings defined by the substitution must be locally finite. We also give a simple example of a two-dimensional substitution on rectangular tiles, with a non-Pisot length expansion $β$, such that no tiling admitted by the substitution is locally finite. The proofs of both results are effectively one-dimensional and involve the idea of a certain type of generalized $β$-transformation.
We consider substitution tilings and Delone sets without the assumption of finite local complexity (FLC). We first give a sufficient condition for tiling dynamical systems to be uniquely ergodic and a formula for the measure of cylinder sets. We then obtain several results on their ergodic-theoretic properties, notably absence of strong mixing and conditions for existence of eigenvalues, which have number-theoretic consequences. In particular, if the set of eigenvalues of the expansion matrix is totally non-Pisot, then the tiling dynamical system is weakly mixing. Further, we define the notion…
The finiteness property is an important arithmetical property of beta-expansions. We exhibit classes of Pisot numbers $β$ having the negative finiteness property, that is the set of finite $(-β)$-expansions is equal to $\mathbb{Z}[β^{-1}]$. For a class of numbers including the Tribonacci number, we compute the maximal length of the fractional parts arising in the addition and subtraction of $(-β)$-integers. We also give conditions excluding the negative finiteness property.
For substitution satisfying Pisot, irreducible, unimodular condition, a tiling substitution plays a key role in construction of a stepped surface and Rauzy fractal. In this paper we will extend the method to hyperbolic automorphisms on the free group of rank 2 in some class, and obtain set equations of Rauzy fractals by virtue of a tiling substitution. We will also see that the domain exchange transformation on Rauzy fractal is just a two interval exchange transformation.
The aim of this paper is to study the connection between different properties related to $β$-expansions. In particular, the relation between two conditions, both ensuring pure discrete spectrum of the odometer, is analysed. The first one is the so-called Hypothesis B for the $G$-odometers and the second one is denoted by (QM) and it has been introduced in the framework of tilings associated to Pisot $β$-numerations.
Shift radix systems form a collection of dynamical systems depending on a parameter $\mathbf{r}$ which varies in the $d$-dimensional real vector space. They generalize well-known numeration systems such as beta-expansions, expansions with respect to rational bases, and canonical number systems. Beta-numeration and canonical number systems are known to be intimately related to fractal shapes, such as the classical Rauzy fractal and the twin dragon. These fractals turned out to be important for studying properties of expansions in several settings. In the present paper we associate a collection …
Let $β>1$ and let $m>\be$ be an integer. Each $x\in I_\be:=[0,\frac{m-1}{β-1}]$ can be represented in the form \[ x=\sum_{k=1}^\infty ε_kβ^{-k}, \] where $ε_k\in\{0,1,...,m-1\}$ for all $k$ (a $β$-expansion of $x$). It is known that a.e. $x\in I_β$ has a continuum of distinct $β$-expansions. In this paper we prove that if $β$ is a Pisot number, then for a.e. $x$ this continuum has one and the same growth rate. We also link this rate to the Lebesgue-generic local dimension for the Bernoulli convolution parametrized by $β$. When $β<\frac{1+\sqrt5}2$, we show that the set of $β$-expansions grows …
We study a family of piecewise expanding maps on the plane, generated by composition of a rotation and an expansive similitude of expansion constant $β$. We give two constants $B_1$ and $B_2$ depending only on the fundamental domain that if $β>B_1$ then the expanding map has a unique absolutely continuous invariant probability measure, and if $β>B_2$ then it is equivalent to $2$-dimensional Lebesgue measure. Restricting to a rotation generated by $q$-th root of unity $ζ$ with all parameters in $\mathbb{Q}(ζ,β)$, it gives a sofic system when $\cos(2π/q) \in \mathbb{Q}(β)$ and $β$ is a Pisot num…
We give a fractal-geometric condition for a measure on [0,1] to be supported on points x that are normal in base n, i.e. such that the sequence x,nx,n^2 x,... equidistributes modulo 1. This condition is robust under C^1 coordinate changes, and it applies also when n is a Pisot number and equidistribution is understood with respect to the beta-map and Parry measure. As applications we obtain new results (and strengthen old ones) about the prevalence of normal numbers in fractal sets, and new results on measure rigidity, specifically completing Host's theorem to multiplicatively independent inte…
