We consider a two-parameter family of random substitutions and show certain combinatorial and topological properties they satisfy. We establish that they admit recognisable words at every level. As a consequence, we get that the subshifts they define are not topologically mixing. We then show that they satisfy a weaker mixing property using a numeration system arising from a sequence of lengths of inflated words. Moreover, we provide explicit bounds for the corresponding topological entropy in terms of the defining parameters $n$ and $p$.
The matrix of a substitution is not sufficient to completely determine the dynamics associated, even in simplest cases since there are many words with the same abelianization. In this paper we study the common points of the canonical broken lines associated to two different Pisot irreducible substitutions $σ_1$ and $σ_2$ having the same incidence matrix. We prove that if 0 is inner point to the Rauzy fractal associated to $σ_1$ these common points can be generated with a substitution on an alphabet of so-called "balanced blocks".
We set up a geometrical theory for the study of the dynamics of reducible Pisot substitutions. It is based on certain Rauzy fractals generated by duals of higher dimensional extensions of substitutions. We obtain under certain hypotheses geometric representations of stepped surfaces and related polygonal tilings, as well as self-replicating and periodic tilings made of Rauzy fractals. We apply our theory to an infinite family of substitutions. For this family, we analyze and interpret in a new combinatorial way the codings of a domain exchange defined on the associated fractal domains. We dedu…
We give a sufficient geometric condition for a subshift to be measurably isomorphic to a domain exchange and to a translation on a torus. And for an irreducible unit Pisot substitution, we introduce a new topology on the discrete line and we give a simple necessary and sufficient condition for the symbolic system to have pure discrete spectrum. This condition gives rise to an algorithm based on computation of automata. To see the power of this criterion, we provide families of substitutions that satisfies the Pisot substitution conjecture: 1) $a \mapsto a^kbc$, $b \mapsto c$, $c \mapsto a$, fo…
We consider 1-dimensional, unimodular Pisot substitution tilings with three intervals, and discuss conditions under which pairs of such tilings are locally isomorhphic (LI), or mutually locally derivable (MDL). For this purpose, we regard the substitutions as homomorphisms of the underlying free group with three generators. Then, if two substitutions are conjugated by an inner automorphism of the free group, the two tilings are LI, and a conjugating outer automorphism between two substitutions can often be used to prove that the two tilings are MLD. We present several examples illustrating the…
We prove the Pisot Conjecture for beta-substitutions: If beta is a Pisot number, the tiling dynamical system associated with the beta-substitution has pure discrete spectrum. As corollaries: (1) arithmetical coding of the hyperbolic solenoidal automorphism associated with the companion matrix of the minimal polynomial of any Pisot number is almost everywhere one-to-one; and (2) every Pisot number is weakly finitary.
We prove that if a primitive and non-periodic substitution is injective on initial letters, constant on final letters, and has Pisot inflation, then the R-action on the corresponding tiling space has pure discrete spectrum. As a consequence, all beta-substitutions for beta a Pisot simple Parry number have tiling dynamical systems with pure discrete spectrum, as do the Pisot systems arising, for example, from the Jacobi-Perron and Brun continued fraction expansions.
We consider the structure of Pisot substitution tiling spaces, in particular, the structure of those spaces for which the translation action does not have pure discrete spectrum. Such a space is always a measurable m-to-one cover of an action by translation on a group called the maximal equicontinuous factor. The integer m is the coincidence rank of the substitution and equals one if and only if translation on the tiling space has pure discrete spectrum. By considering factors intermediate between a tiling space and its maximal equicontinuous factor, we establish a lower bound on the cohomolog…
We consider one-dimensional substitution tiling spaces where the dilatation (stretching factor) is a degree d Pisot number, and where the first rational Cech cohomology is d-dimensional. We construct examples of such "homological Pisot" substitutions that do not have pure discrete spectra. These examples are not unimodular, and we conjecture that the coincidence rank must always divide a power of the norm of the dilatation. To support this conjecture, we show that homological Pisot substitutions exhibit an Exact Regularity Property (ERP), in which the number of occurrences of a patch for a ret…
In this article, we prove that for all pairs of primitive Pisot or uniform substitutions with the same dominating eigenvalue, there exists a finite set of block maps such that every block map between the corresponding subshifts is an element of this set, up to a shift.
In this article we study symmetric subsets of Rauzy fractals of unimodular irreducible Pisot substitutions. The symmetry considered is reflection through the origin. Given an unimodular irreducible Pisot substitution, we consider the intersection of its Rauzy fractal with the Rauzy fractal of the reverse substitution. This set is symmetric and it is obtained by the balanced pair algorithm associated with both substitutions.
Let $σ$ be a non-unit Pisot substitution and let $α$ be the associated Pisot number. It is known that one can associate certain fractal tiles, so-called \emph{Rauzy fractals}, with $σ$. In our setting, these fractals are subsets of a certain open subring of the adèle ring $\mathbb{A}_{\mathbb{Q}(α)}$. We present several approaches on how to define Rauzy fractals and discuss the relations between them. In particular, we consider Rauzy fractals as the natural geometric objects of certain numeration systems, define them in terms of the one-dimensional realization of $σ$ and its dual (in the spiri…
Sellami and Sirvent conjectured that the balanced pair algorithm fails for the following pair of Pisot substitutions: \[ φ_0: \begin{array}{l} a \mapsto abc b \mapsto a c \mapsto ac \end{array} \quad \text{ and } \quad φ_1: \begin{array}{l} a \mapsto cba b \mapsto a c \mapsto ca \end{array}. \] The conjecture stated the balanced pair algorithm fails because there is no initial balanced pair. In the present note we prove this conjecture using a method based on simultaneous coding of the pair of the fixed points of the morphisms.
We prove an extension of the well-known Pisot substitution conjecture to the $S$-adic symbolic setting on two letters. The proof relies on the use of Rauzy fractals and on the fact that strong coincidences hold in this framework.
This paper uses a connection between bounded remainder sets in $\mathbb{R}^d$ and cut-and-project sets in $\mathbb{R}$ together with the fact that each one-dimensional Pisot substitution sequence is bounded distance equivalent to some lattice in order to construct several bounded remainder sets with fractal boundary. Moreover it is shown that there are cut-and-project sets being not bounded distance equivalent to each other even if they are locally indistinguishable, more precisely: even if they are contained in the same hull.
We define a generic algorithmic framework to prove pure discrete spectrum for the substitutive symbolic dynamical systems associated with some infinite families of Pisot substitutions. We focus on the families obtained as finite products of the three-letter substitutions associated with the multidimensional continued fraction algorithms of Brun and Jacobi-Perron. Our tools consist in a reformulation of some combinatorial criteria (coincidence conditions), in terms of properties of discrete plane generation using multidimensional (dual) substitutions. We also deduce some topological and dynamic…
Given an n-dimensional substitution whose associated linear expansion is unimodular and hyperbolic, we use elements of the one-dimensional integer Čech cohomology of the associated tiling space to construct a finite-to-one semi-conjugacy, called geometric realization, between the substitution induced dynamics and an invariant set of a hyperbolic toral automorphism. If the linear expansion satisfies a Pisot family condition and the rank of the module of generalized return vectors equals the generalized degree of the linear expansion, the image of geometric realization is the entire torus and co…
A substitution $\vp$ is strong Pisot if its abelianization matrix is non-singular and all eigenvalues except the Perron-Frobenius eigenvalue have modulus less than one. For strong Pisot $\vp$ that satisfies a no cycle condition and for which the translation flow on the tiling space $\T_\vp$ has pure discrete spectrum, we describe the collection $\T^P_\vp$ of pairs of proximal tilings in $\T_\vp$ in a natural way as a substitution tiling space. We show that if $ψ$ is another such substitution, then $\T_\vp $ and $\T_ψ$ are homeomorphic if and only if $\T^P_\vp$ and $\T^P_ψ$ are homeomorphic. We…
If phi is a Pisot substitution of degree d, then the inflation and substitution homeomorphism Phi on the tiling space T_Phi factors via geometric realization onto a d-dimensional solenoid. Under this realization, the collection of Phi-periodic asymptotic tilings corresponds to a finite set that projects onto the branch locus in a d-torus. We prove that if two such tiling spaces are homeomorphic, then the resulting branch loci are the same up to the action of certain affine maps on the torus.
One of the simplest non-Pisot substitution rules is investigated in its geometric version as a tiling with intervals of natural length as prototiles. Via a detailed renormalisation analysis of the pair correlation functions, we show that the diffraction measure cannot comprise any absolutely continuous component. This implies that the diffraction, apart from a trivial Bragg peak at the origin, is purely singular continuous. En route, we derive various geometric and algebraic properties of the underlying Delone dynamical system, which we expect to be relevant in other such systems as well.
We consider substitution tilings and Delone sets without the assumption of finite local complexity (FLC). We first give a sufficient condition for tiling dynamical systems to be uniquely ergodic and a formula for the measure of cylinder sets. We then obtain several results on their ergodic-theoretic properties, notably absence of strong mixing and conditions for existence of eigenvalues, which have number-theoretic consequences. In particular, if the set of eigenvalues of the expansion matrix is totally non-Pisot, then the tiling dynamical system is weakly mixing. Further, we define the notion…
We investigate topological mixing of compatible random substitutions. For primitive random substitutions on two letters whose second eigenvalue is greater than one in modulus, we identify a simple, computable criterion which is equivalent to topological mixing of the associated subshift. This generalises previous results on deterministic substitutions. In the case of recognisable, irreducible Pisot random substitutions, we show that the associated subshift is not topologically mixing. Without recognisability, we rely on more specialised methods for excluding mixing and we apply these methods t…
Any infinite sequence of substitutions with the same matrix of the Pisot type defines a symbolic dynamical system which is minimal. We prove that, to any such sequence, we can associate a compact set (Rauzy fractal) by projection of the stepped line associated with an element of the symbolic system on the contracting space of the matrix. We show that this Rauzy fractal depends continuously on the sequence of substitutions, and investigate some of its properties; in some cases, this construction gives a geometric model for the symbolic dynamical system.
For a fairly general class of two-dimensional tiling substitutions, we prove that if the length expansion $β$ is a Pisot number, then the tilings defined by the substitution must be locally finite. We also give a simple example of a two-dimensional substitution on rectangular tiles, with a non-Pisot length expansion $β$, such that no tiling admitted by the substitution is locally finite. The proofs of both results are effectively one-dimensional and involve the idea of a certain type of generalized $β$-transformation.
We prove that for the uniquely ergodic ${\bf R}^d$ action associated with a primitive substitution tiling of finite local complexity, every measurable eigenfunction coincides with a continuous function almost everywhere. Thus, topological weak-mixing is equivalent to measure-theoretic weak-mixing for such actions. If the expansion map for the substitution is a pure dilation by $θ>1$ and the substitution has a fixed point, then failure of weak-mixing is equivalent to $θ$ being a Pisot number.
We consider self-affine tilings in the Euclidean space and the associated tiling dynamical systems, namely, the translation action on the orbit closure of the given tiling. We investigate the spectral properties of the system. It turns out that the presence of the discrete component depends on the algebraic properties of the eigenvalues of the expansion matrix $ϕ$ for the tiling. Assuming that $ϕ$ is diagonalizable over $\C$ and all its eigenvalues are algebraic conjugates of the same multiplicity, we show that the dynamical system has a relatively dense discrete spectrum if and only if it is …
We investigate topological mixing for Z and R actions associated with primitive substitutions on two letters. The characterization is complete if the second eigenvalue $θ_2$ of the substitution matrix satisfies $|θ_2|\ne 1$. If $|θ_2|<1$, then (as is well-known) the substitution system is not topologically weak mixing, so it is not topologically mixing. We prove that if $|θ_2|> 1$, then topological mixing is equivalent to topological weak mixing, which has an explicit arithmetic characterization. The case $|θ_2|=1$ is more delicate, and we only obtain some partial results.
This paper studies geometric and spectral properties of $S$-adic shifts and their relation to continued fraction algorithms. These shifts are symbolic dynamical systems obtained by iterating infinitely many substitutions. Pure discrete spectrum for $S$-adic shifts and tiling properties of associated Rauzy fractals are established under a generalized Pisot assumption together with a geometric coincidence condition. These general results extend the scope of the Pisot substitution conjecture to the $S$-adic framework. They are applied to families of $S$-adic shifts generated by Arnoux-Rauzy as we…
We use generalised Zeckendorf representations of natural numbers to investigate mixing properties of symbolic dynamical systems. The systems we consider consist of bi-infinite sequences associated with so-called random substitutions. We focus on random substitutions associated with the Fibonacci, tribonacci and metallic mean numbers and take advantage of their respective numeration schemes.
A subset $A$ of $\mathbb{N}$ is called an IP-set if $A$ contains all finite sums of distinct terms of some infinite sequence $(x_n)_{n\in \mathbb{N}} $ of natural numbers. Central sets, first introduced by Furstenberg using notions from topological dynamics, constitute a special class of IP-sets possessing additional nice combinatorial properties: Each central set contains arbitrarily long arithmetic progressions, and solutions to all partition regular systems of homogeneous linear equations. In this paper we show how certain families of aperiodic words of low factor complexity may be used to …
